FORGOTTENNOTES
25 May 12
Review:
There have been whispers of an album from fast rising UK producer Hackman for some time now, and though it's yet to arrive, this free download should give some indication as to its direction. "Forgotten Notes" perhaps shows the producer at his most melancholic, combining bittersweet keys and mournful vocals with some deep bass. But don't let that deceive you - it's still filled with the upbeat garage flutter, and packs more colour into four minutes than the scores of house-influenced bass pretenders that are following in his wake.

Review:
Ahead of Hackman's album dropping, PTN release this juicy funky-house hybrid, which makes great use of some hypnotically arranged vocals and some subtle jacking hats, as well as a butter-smooth bottom end. Just as silky, "Bam Bam" gets even deeper - a real shift away from his earlier, more grimey/tropical beats. But don't fret - there's still plenty of nasty funky flavour here. House fans of any hue will adore these two essential new cuts.

Review:
Rotterdam-based producer Halp leaves his usual home of Seclusiasis to drop the Tic Tac Toe EP on Lowriders Recordings, but thankfully his bright music hasn't lost any of its charm in the process. The title track is a sticky synth combination of booty bass and UK Funky styles, with a breathy vocal and infectious sense of melody, whilst "Baby" is built around a neon synth siren that climbs on a 2-step beat with vocal snippets peppered on top. The final original production, "Bek" is a stripped back juke influenced number with vocoder action. Big remix support is offered; Sduk transforms "Baby" into a dark, raw, sawtooth nightmare, Kramphaft turns "Tic Tac Toe" into a driving footwork number filled with scattered rimshots, whilst Starkey takes "Field" and delivers a subtly progressive version seeping neon from its insides.

CHURCH 001
26 Nov 12
Review:
Heralding the start of the newly minted Church imprint, Happa makes a strong case for the buzz he has received with but a smattering of appearances before now. "Beat Of The Drum" is as percussion-centric as you might hope, and what percussion it is. Ostensibly based around a 2-step wiggle, the monolithic hits that fall with deft swing are infallible in their guaranteed dance-levelling power. Throwing Snow takes said beats into a frantic, juked-out territory on his remix, firing off that instantly identifiable jerky rhythm and a considerable tempo jump. "Bring It Back" is a considerable shift in style, as Happa delves into a menacing electro house well, leaving it to Apes & Seb Wildblood to drop a more casual deep house cut.

Review:
Hardhouse Banton has been a force to reckon with in the world of UK Funky since 2008, and even counts Kieran Hebden among his fans, with a storming remix of Four Tet's "Sing" last year. The superbly named Banton Weight EP on Greenmoney Recordings sees the producer continue to hone his style, with three cuts of heavy UKF. "Prep For War" creates a spectral rave siren from an elongated vocal sample, whilst its warehouse techno scale is brought out by reverb laden snares and demonic undertones, whilst the hypnotic stabs of the similarly huge "Miss You" are balanced with an emotive string buildup. Finally "In Da House" offers a much deeper cut, its energy pulsating slowly across its nine minute length with rising synths and snare rolls.

Review:
All the way from Japan, Hyato6go is on a mission to condense to condense as many genres into each bass tune as humanly possible - and he's not doing badly. This six tracker for Booty Tune is a smorgasbord of choppy juke, trap, dub, hip-hop and bass music (with about a zillion samples thrown in for good measure!). It's quite a listening experience, highlights of which include the Sega Mega Drive vibes of "RDJ", the demented, juked G-funk of "Ohio" and the bootyfied synthscape of "Feeling Feeling".
