Too Much (Mike Millrain remix) - (7:21) 124 BPM
from $2.04
Review: Ever since their last release, we've been preoccupied with what really does do go on deep within the mind of a dragon. It turns out that beneath all the scales and firey breath they tend to think a lot about holidaying in Ayia Napa circa 2001. Wonder if Saint George knew this. Anyway, "Too Much" is a delicious mix of catchy distant vocals snippets and perky 130bpm beats and warm, undulating bass waves. Remix-wise Mike Millrain brings the '90s house fire - all slammin' New York garage vibes and closer than close synthy goodness. Summer is officially here!

Review: The information surrounding Mind Of A Dragon is still as imperceptible as ever, and this new EP for Slime adds to the mystery in a delightful way. Even the tunes, a harsh blend of garage, bass and nu-skool jungle, are dusty and covered in a layer of mystique that gets our appetites going good and proper. "Emotions" itself is a powerful garage stormer with a those inimitable r&b samples and accompanied by an intricate percussion flex, The stand-out moment for us, though, is surely "Not The Same" simply for its woozy, shape-shifting bass and forward-thinking beat arrangement. A winner.

Review: UK operation Saucy Record return with a swiftly compiled second volume of Saucy Selections featuring a healthy 17 cuts of Tech, Bass, House and Garage from the international community. Label regulars like Libra (UK), Melod!k, and Spekktrum brush up against Saucy newcomers and there's a pleasant array of styles and sounds to be found within this selection, moving from sultry cuts such as opener "Had Enough" by Chris Skapetis to tougher and rougher bassline movers. Grande's "NOS" playfully toys around the Club Constructions approach to dancefloor tools, whilst Spekktrum is on aggro form with compilation highlight "The Game".

Review: Saucy have dubbed Dosage as being 'one of the most technically gifted blossoming producers the UK has to offer' and they're not wrong. Here we get to find out, starting with the celebratory fizz of the totally funky disco-house jam "Panama Peppers". The latter quickly gets disfigured for life by evil genius Kursa who brings some scary bass fire to the tune. "Reaper" continues the dark vibes with more of a dubby ghetto sound which is turned into a sleazy after-hours classic by Echoes & Knight. Finally Dosage teams up with Ricin for the harder bass and breaks attack of "Ishmael".

Review: West Midlands' finest, Pelikann is back with his third release for Saucy, a self-proclaimed 'face melter of an EP' called Jupiter. It features three new original tracks and extra mixes. Things begin with the remarkable a sinister title track - a twisted fanfare featuring a nervous gasping recurring sound. Elsewhere we get slinky bass and punky beats on Tri3e and Underground Traffic's mixes. The monstrous "Godzilla" is followed by the viscous "Tight" and "R.P.A.F.A." which brings unexpectedly precise grime vibe to the EP. Further shout outs go to Pelikann's own VIP mixing skills and the jagged bass of WATSN's version.

Review: Liverpool bass man Lucent isn't known for his gentle compassion when delivering dancefloor punishment, and there's no change on his latest four-track assault, "Place Burn Down". The fans of course can't get enough of it and who can blame them? This EP once again highlights this producer's meticulous eye for detail and originality without ever appearing soft. Highlights include the epic eponymous opener, which is a hybrid of 4 x 4, electro-house fizz and MC Shantie's verbal fire. Elsewhere carnival trumpet stabs are about in the breakin' "Warpin'" and the 22nd century electronic dance mayhem of "The Future". Boom!

Review: Generally busy with production partner Mikey B, solo outings by Sketchi are rare as hen's teeth. So it's all the more exciting when they do arrive, and here on first-single-in-ages, I Know, he doesn't disappoint. His aforementioned co-producer even makes an appearance on the dreamy off-kilter house of "Don't You Care?" Elsewhere he's left to his own devices but equally shines on the likes of the brooding, tribal UKF monster "Axe Kick" and the sweeping melancholy of spacey 2-stepper, "Conquer". A class above.

Review: Tumble Audio is what you would call a truly "UK" label. This is because it deals in just about any strain of British dance music, and from garage, through to dubstep, and post-bass, it always delivers the goods in style. This time it's Archive with five smoking riddims from the depths of underground, and "Keep Guard", along with "Ghana Police" are what you would call true hybrids - the beats are harsh and stepping, while the low frequencies dominate the groove. "Gully", once again, proves that 'bass' music really is a thing by chucking in just about any genre imaginable that falls on the hardcore continuum, and there's even a few remixes of "Keep Guard", one stripped-down Burial-like reinterpretation by Bromley, and heavy-stepping version by Sly-one.

Review: A former hard junglist who defected to the chilled world of dub and reggae, LA's 6Blocc, has found a whole new lease of life. Usually found jetsetting around the globe spinning tunes, he's taken a break from his busy schedule to deliver Bassline Bangers Vol 2. There are six raw cuts to be found here with highlights including the rolling sing-a-long rasta anthem "Fiyah Tyme", the I Got Five On It-referencing warehouse garage of "Changes" and the clap-heavy booty bouncer "Sundayz". Dope!

Review: Brighton's up and coming DJ/producer Pavv is back on Southpoint with some truly representative sounds of the UK underground garage sound and after some great releases on Project All Out, In:flux Audio and U Wot Blud? Records. The sexy and wonky title track is no doubt indebted to legends like MJ Cole, but what an impressive tribute; the use of the sampled vocals on this one is sweet. Bushbaby turns in a pretty killer remix of the track too which we dug, adding more swing to the rhythm and some added 'wonk' to the bassline which worked well. Also appearing is "Run Tings" which is more raw, tracky and full of attitude; save this one for later in the night when you want to up the energy level effectively.

Review: Much like his namesake, Finland's bass underdog, Rico Tubbs, proves that he packs just as much of a punch Don Johnson in Miami Vice, and then some. Here he references more American culture with Ghost Rider, the flaming skeleton biker. However, it's less retro America and more sweaty UK warehouse - fusing hands-in-air piano stabs with gurgling low basslines and skippy beats. Dr Cryptic's mix perfectly captures that gurn-fest moment when it feels like the sky is literally attacking you. Elsewhere Thijs Haal delivers the hardest mix here, whilst Ampr drops to half time for some robo dubstep fun.

Review: They say that if people's early fears of the effects of video games were correct then we'd all be in dark rooms, listening to bleeps and munching pills like Pacman. This retro arcade game themed single by Champion sounds nothing like anything anyone could've imagined music of the future would sound like. "Arcade" mixes nostalgic 8-bit melodies and doomy post-apocalyptic soundscapes punctuated by clattering metallic beats. "Chrome" meanwhile fuses a staccato bass-step edge with moody depth.

Review: We want some of whatever's in the water round Cellardore's hood 'cos it's turned him into a furiously prolific beat maker. Here he power slams us one more time with the 303 EP on Slime. First up is the eponymous ode to the Roland 303 featuring an incessant breakbeat ridden roughshod by pummelling acid squelch. The retro-isms continue on his collaboration with Marvel & Stavros "Back In The Day" who reminisce about the good old days of raving over a perky 2-step beat, whilst his Mind Of A Dragon hook-up "Freedom" is a deep cut that explores 90s atmospherics with relish.

Review: Influx:Audio is a label celebrating the thriving bass scene of their native Yorkshire. One of their shining stars is Pavv (ironically from Brighton) who has made a big splash in the UK bass scene with releases for the likes of U Wot Blud? Here they invite him to reveal his top artists and tunes happening right now and he doesn't disappoint, delivering 10 bleeding edge jams including the space-age UKF of "Things I Do" by Deadbeat UK, the percolating bass gargles of "Nod Ya Head" by Spookz and Pavv's own quirky take on wobble-heavy 4 x 4, "Everyday".

Review: Of late Louis Richardson aka bass hero Hypho has started to including two new tracks per release, a sign he's getting more prolific. On the "Hyper EP" we get the smokin', tokin' half-time title track that boasts some urban cred courtesy of Haribou's low-key rap. "Ekko" meanwhile is more your traditional dubstep but with added mechanical intricacies. Remix-wise Vital Techniques perk things up with some steppy dub vibes and Smoked Out Fox delivers the EP highlight - all dark bass throbs and knife-like hi-hats.

Review: U Wot Blud are always ahead of the game and although many have moved on since last year's instalment of the Rising Stars series, they've not stayed still either. This third volume shows us a whole new side to the UWB sound, which if not exactly 'sensitive', is certainly showing a kind of newfound maturity. The dancefloor is still their main priority of course, and the two 4/4 techy electro-house bangers by Aliii ("Artifice", "Blackmail") totally capture that spirit. Elsewhere highlights include scattershot tropicalia and bouncy bass of "You Went" by TK Vicious and the pounding future-jack-fest of "Redshift" by Lycid.

Review: Ultimate bass batboys U Wot Blud sign Forbid onto their roster, and the brother comes through with three nasty piece of low frequencies for the dancehall. "Guerrilla Warfare", as the name implies, is a no nonsense gun-slinger with a bit of wobble-end to support its frame, and "Vitamin D Sharp" carries that vibe through to an ever nastier bit of rave-stabbing bass, whereas "Keep It Going" chucks in some 4/4 drums and twists the wobble into a stone-cold UK hard-house budget that'll rock you brains and jaws out. UFF!

Review: Bristol is surely now the UK's official home of bass, and here comes the city's latest export Pharoah K: a producer and drummer who's definitely going places fast. He's been preparing this new EP for a while and it shows in the expert attention to detail. There are four well-crafted jams here with the title track - all deep synths and ghetto bounce - leading the charge. Elsewhere 'Duke" lays on the orchestration to great effect, "Swamp Five" delivers eccentric, scattershot beats and lastly "Arms" is an arms-in-the-air carnival jam.

Review: Nu Era are a duo from the West Midlands intent on toppling Bristol's bas crown by championed in a 'new era' of bass music. So far they've been doing a good job about it, particularly with their jams on Four40. "Under My Skin" sees them reunited with the label, bring fire over the course of three new tracks. The title track opens the EP with some minimal 4 x 4 action, whilst "Rush" brings the ghetto bounce to the party and "Go" with its huge snare build ups and mercilessly low bottom end is a peak time monster if ever there was one.

The vinyl run is already out of print, but there's still much digital joy to be had. There's one from three happening producers here: DJ Champion brings some fire with UKF monster "Selecta" which is all sci-fi bass and rolling carnival drums. Elsewhere MA1 delivers a peak time animal in the form of the hysterical synthline-fuelled "Bassbox" and finally DJ Naughty (no, not the Gigolo one) delivers EP highlight, the quirky leftfield garage workout "Unstoppable". Ace.

Review: Boy, it's their instalment of the This Is Night Bass series and, as always, it's a tight and severely jam-packed bag of pure bass-ridden quality. The rhythm carrying the best part of the release is one that locks into 4/4 mode, but the melodies, low frequencies and vocals contain something seriously UK about them. In fact, if you're looking for purist British house music with a garage flavour then you'v hit the right spot; it's as if these guys have tele transported back to 2000/2001, when the roots of dubstep were being laid-down from the foundations of garage and bassline. YES.

Review: Thirty Three nuggets of serious UKG gullyness; Project Allout have already developed a serious reputation for generous dispatches, but this is whole new level. Uniting their many lengmen for a deep exploration of the pastures between bassline house, instrumental grime and the broader realms of bass music, every area is covered. Highlights include the eski angst of Chemist RNS' "Stare", the violin-snapping, post-dubstep darkness of Deadbeat UK's "Graveyard", the outrageous VIP muscles of Hoax and Dubzta's "Twilight Zone" and the sassy vocal flexery of Pavv's "You Got Me". This is just the tip of the bassline iceberg, though. Dig deep and grab your own lenger; there are enough here for everyone.

Review: "PPH" is a prime example of progressively minded production that shows how things always move forward in Underground Traffic's world. With boomy dubstep married to housier vibes, the results are a bouncy skipper that, although moody, brings a more ghetto feel the beats. DevelopMENT takes this approach further for a real 4/4 wobble melodic hybrid. Rising stars My Nu Leng are up last with a positively epic bass attack that virtually guarantees stadium-sized pandemonium everywhere.

Review: South Coast bass troubadour, Distro, now finds himself back where he started - on Roska's mighty Kicks & Snares imprint. He's on his most commercial form yet, we reckon, with "Nothing To Prove" being a perky UKF sing-along featuring plenty of wobbly carnival vibes. The Roska X Marjora mix steers things into deeper, darker waters - all sublime moods and scattershot beats. Doctor Beat also steps up to the (dub) plate to deliver a heavier bassline assault for those later hours. There's also a sleek instrumental supplied for all those who don't dig the vocals. Win-win!

Review: Veteran DJ duo Plump DJs recently delivered their big room anthem "Yes Yes" to unanimous approval. Now we get to revisit the banger via a new remix by none other than the mighty Hybrid Theory. Although the essence of the original is retained, HT swaps most of the tribal/baile drum rhythms for more of a wobble-heavy 4 x 4 workout. Stripped back and fresh, this anthem's success is now going to last all summer!

Review: Fasten your seat belt and get ready for takeoff as UKG titan Sunship returns with a searing new single featuring the formidable vocal talents of CJ Tarsnanae. The original features accelerated skippy beats, choppy vocal snippets and one seriously catchy chorus. There is also a series of reworks - "Chunky Beats II", a moodier affair, less ADHD vibes, which concentrates on an ascending/descending bassline and synthy atmospherics and "Clunky Beats IV", one for the underground heads with its evil bass riff and pounding speed garage beats. Dub versions are also supplied for those DJs who really don't mess around too!

Review: This new EP from Birmingham's bass bastion Bassboy sees him leap artistically from his early days of RnB cut-ups. He's been pushing his sound more towards an off-kilter garage sound of late, though here things begin brightly with "Rainbows" - an infectious fusion of fizzy garage-pop and brutal bottom end. However elsewhere the perky "Colours" benefits from some heavy tribal thump and "Once Upon A Time" is an orgy of nasty 4x4 and 90s vocal snippets and pads aplenty. DJ Direct also appears to add some serious muscle to the title track too.

Review: Tumble Audio has been providing us with seriously killer bass music for a few years now, and here they celebrate reaching their tenth release by recruiting Roadman Joel to curate a selection of the kind of seriously heavy tunes you might expect to hear at one of their many label nights. There's a whopping 18 tracks on here covering a wide spectrum of British urban dance music, including Majora's ridiculously amazing tribal UKF monster "T&C's", A Motion's ghetto 2-step hybrid "Back In Your Love" and Sentiment's wobble-heavy tropical jam, "Change You".

Review: With a reputation like that of Slime's, when they present their idea of garage future, it tends to be pretty definitive. Here they've done it again with a second installment of Future Sound Of Garage 2. There are 28 new joints here, all bursting with futuristic fizz. Highlights include the robo 2-step opener "Dreams" by Cup & String, the nasty bass and speedy beats of Conducta's "Be Strong" and the warm, washing synth waves of melodic bliss-popper "Goin In" by David Eliza. The future's safe in the hands of Slime!

Review: As suggested by their name, This Ain't Bristol are a German label pushing UK sounds. Maximono are a duo of Drum & Bass producers from London and Hannover who have switched to house music and their bass driven, fun loving tendencies will no doubt mark comparisons to the Dirtybird crew over the Atlantic. They've taken over A&R duties for the label here and this compilation reflects their tastes There's some surefire dancefloor artillery on here such as Maximono themselves with "Bleep", Dirtybird alumnus Worthy with the bass heavy party vibes of "Big End", the druggy and minimal main room vibes of Los Angeleno Dillon Nathaniel on "Keep On Keepin On" and Berliner Ben Mono's "You Know It's True" which just reeks of Sunday afternoon hedonism at Kater Blau.

Review: Southport is a label firmly committed to championing their native Brighton's bass talent. Here they figure that three heads are better than one - teaming up RMarney, Karl Vincent and Tee for the barnstorming "Sound The Alarm". Clocking in at over six minutes, the track is a slammin' slice of muscular 4 x 4 complete with a rolling, pulsating bottom end riff and that timeless Mickey Dread "you make me feel so good" sample. Remix-wise we also get some atonal wobble from Dephex, 1Thirty delivers some similar skippy bass resonance and Dappa closes with a melodic housey banger.

Review: Big props due to the Eglo network for this release, an impeccable EP of Floating Points productions which cannot fail to impress on any level. Musically, it's perhaps Shepherd's most ambitious collection to date, veering through sumptuous deep house, expertly crafted broken boogie from another century and bristling techno. "Myrtle Avenue" is a dreamlike way to open a release, plunging into vast, widescreen expanses of texture and detail, further cementing comparisons with Theo as the freeform keys align with undulating layers of percussion. "Realise" and "Obfuse" are the precursors to the standout tracks on the second twelve, but are in no way filler, with the former teasing out finely placed 808 programming over pensive simmering patterns, whilst the latter is a fizzing, stripped down drum machine workout that is gradually joined by yet more tenderised synths. And thus we come to "Arp3", a track which will secure this release a place in many a heart, expertly growing into a haunting techno epic and filled with so many production intricacies and rhythmic deviations it demands several repeat plays. "Sais" rounds off the release, revealing in full detail the track's fuzzy, orchestral glory some time after a Dub version appeared on record store day.

Review: Midlands bass duo, Hybrid Theory, were only recently up in the dock on trial for their murderously killer low-end frequencies. Seems that they must have got off on a technicality as they are already back out and ready to offend again. This new split single features two typically uncompromising productions. "Fatality" features knife-sharp hi-hats, buzz saw bass and positively lethal drops a plenty. "The Edge" meanwhile boasts skippy breakbeats, merciless bass bounce and even some string samples just to shake things up a little.

With exclusive cuts and versions firing from all the label's most consistent contributors, it covers all relative corners creatively; from Killjoy's gameshow grime "Turnt Ones VIP" to the chiselled, sinewy two-steps of Terror Danjah & Zed Bias's "Telepathy" via the sheet metal snares on Flava D's "Break", this collection goes further than representing a forward-thinking imprint but also documents exactly where bass music is heading in the future. The former squares up tough with a pair of strong contenders - the vintage rave samples paired with modern 4 x 4 vibes of "Morning Sickness" and "The Immortals": all celestial synth clouds and warehouse bounce. The latter proves he's no wallflower either by delivering the buzzsaw speed-bass of "Bronson The Hedgehog" and the absolutely pounding wobble of "Dirty Like Your Sister". Fierce stuff!

Review: Sheffield's Dr Cryptic has made a home for himself at the Chip Butty label and, if we're honest, we love what he's done with the place. The bass playa is up and knocking around with "Skippy", a UK garage track with a wobbling, moaning piece of bass fit for a low-riding dubstep tune. There's a heap of remixes of the tune: Phatworld plays with the bass and wobbles it to its very limits, Rico Tubbs goes deeper and dubbier on the percussion muscle, Vital Techniques distorts the low frequencies, and Dr Oscillator adds a little old-school flavour to the equation.
