Review: Booty Fruit's DJ Maars joins forces with newcomer Tom Showtime for some seriously delicious sound mash-ups for this latest EP. "Heatwave Episode" is a funked-out re-edit of Dr.Dre's and Snoop Dogg's infamous "The Next Episode", whilst "Hungry Busta" puts a real dancehall vibe over Busta Rhyme's inimitable vocal machine-gun bursts. Review: Arriving at a fourth Midnight Riot label compilation in little over a year is no mean feat for Yam Who?'s ISM operation, and the key to their success lies in the diversity of sounds you can include within the overarching theme of nocturnal grooves. And of course the high standard of artists that contribute, with this bumper 23 track selection no different as Yam Who? call on some respected names to contribute; seeing the likes of Joey Negro, Ilya Santana, Rakyo and LTJ Experience puts you at ease as you know you are in good hands - the Negro edit of Yambee's Ballistic Brothers classic "Blacker" is a notable highlight. Yet the fact these established names don't overshadow the contributions of lesser known Midnight Riot newcomers such as Dan Butler and Caserta - indeed the latter Boston based producer provides perhaps the best example of a 'nocturnal groove' with his slow burning, beat down house cut "Get Down".

Review: Following the success of the first three volumes of his AOR-tinged V's Edits series, Russian producer Valique (best known under his usual pseudonym for disco-flecked funk breaks) unleashes another EP of scalpel jobs. This time, the sources are a little more obscure (the silly artist names offer clues), but the party-starting remit remains. So, we get some chunky low-slung, Fleetwood Mac-ish rock ("Because"), a dash of hustling disco-funk ("Up"), a sprinkling of synth-bass laden funk-rock ("Soul Francisco"), a thickset house version of a soul classic ("Good Or Bad") and a big chunk of '90s US garage silliness ("Love You Too") - all tweaked and teased with an eye on dancefloor devastation.

Review: Jay 'Chubba' Richards has been popping up all over the place of late, with recent releases on Sirch and Odea Records. Here, he brings his particular brand of contemporary house and UK funky fusion to Republic. "Moody" - so-called because it features a prominent sample from Kenny Dixon Jnr talking about his MPC - sets the tone, layering tough electronic percussion over a monstrous bassline. "Diamonds" sounds like a fusion of classic UKG and '90s house, while "Broken" feels like the sort of thing that Hypercolour should be signing (think nice chords, tasty vocal stabs and bassline-driven deep house flavour). There's also a tougher, UK funky-flavoured tweak from Vedicis and Vanshift that's well worth a listen.

Review: Ben Westbeach's Breach alter ego continues to frolic wildly in the lush pastures of low-end house music with "Jack". Review: Trust us, in our experience when encountering someone who goes by a nickname like Fingerman, it's usually best not to enquire as to how they came to be christened so. Here though he seems intent for us to know his true story, and luckily for us he's explaining it through the language of music. "I Know Its Mine" is a snazzy, brassy anthemic jam, "Lenny's Disco" is super camp fun of the Carl Bean variety, "Outta Sight" is more low-slung stuff, and "Honky Honk", with its incredible sliding bassline, is the sound of a roof being raised!

Review: Having previously danced the night away, the extended musical family behind the Editorial imprint sit down together for a nice spot of Sunday Brunch. In practice, that means a slightly deeper, groovier flex than some previous outings. There's plenty to enjoy, though, from the low-slung mutant nu-disco of JKriv's "Something Special" and the tumbling goodness of Sonicvibe's "Wet Level" (based on Rick James' "Cold Blooded"), to the original boogie sweetness of DJ Butcher's "All My Dub" (a much-needed tweak of Major Harris's long-forgotten "All My Life"). Review: The Boddika-helmed Nonplus unveil Think & Change, the label's first compilation and what a way to mark such an event. Calling on a cast of the great and the good of contemporary techno and bass music, Think & Change arrives sporting some thirteen tracks, a statement of how far Nonplus has come since its emergence in 2009 as an outlet for the Autonomic family of artists, gradually mutating into a more wide ranging approach, with material from Actress, Kassem Mosse and Basic Soul Unit ensuring a reputation as one of the most respected labels in the bass music diaspora. The highlights on this compilation are many, but you should be checking Four Tet's contribution "For These Times" (easily his best, least fussy club track to date) "Bad Chicago" from Martyn, and Kassem Mosse's excellent "Broken Patterns".

Review: ISM Records' two Futurism EPs have proved so popular that label boss Yam Who has decided to use them as the inspiration for an expansive compilation of previously unreleased gems. Unlike the label's other popular strand, Midnight Riot, there's always been a bit more of an open-minded, eclectic feel about the Futurism releases. This is no different. Whilst rooted in nu-disco and deep house, Futurism: Shades of Space also touches on 21st century jazz-funk (Manmademusic), bongo-laden spiritual house (Nu Ak's "Fly Away"), fluid garage (Nega Tiv's excellent "Liquid Call"), woozy Balearica (Ben La Desh and Plan DAqua), block party boogie (Questlife feat Wildstyle, Freekwency) and nu-jazz (Hamish Balfour). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.

Captain Futuro kicks things off with "Love Me Crazy", a slo-mo disco-flecked hip-hop head-nodder. Label supremo DJ Butcher turns Dave Gerard's "Twisted Message" (a sneaky bootleg version of the Furious Five classic) into a disco funk-breaks smasher, before laying down some revivalist rare groove fun in the shape of his own "However Do You Want Me" (a rework of Soul II Soul's "Back To Life"). A decidedly sensual package is completed by the misty-eyed headiness of Ill Advised "Superstition" (yep, a remake of that "Superstitition").

Review: With the imminent return of Daft Punk reminding us all of Paris's vibrant electronic music heritage, local label ClekClekBoom pop-up to provide us with a wide-eyed snapshot of the current Parisian underground. There are hints of familiar French staples - the stomping Ed Banger-ish ravery of The Town's "Dice", the classic house flex of Coni's "Missing You Nire" - but for the most part Paris Club Music Volume 1 dances to a different beat. With label regulars French Fries coming to the fore, much of the album is devoted to the sort of hard-to-pigeonhole bass music that takes its influence as much from B-more, R&B and UK garage as filter funk and electro-house.

Review: Volume Six of the esteemed Sccucci Manucci operation sees the Tom Selleck of disco flecked house rack up the air miles with an international cast of talent contributing. Contemporary disco connoisseurs should be fully aware of Gredits, the Swedish producer with previous on the Basic Fingers label; "Doing It Deep" does it right, seductively teasing out a killer looped up disco groove that gets more flirtatious with every listen. German dwelling Greek producer Elef takes us into classicist house terrain with the infectious bump and shuffle of "Lazy Liz", whilst a long promised Sccucci weapon from The Candy Dealers (aka Christian Malloni & Jay West also sees release. Review: Larse is a hard act to track down and although we don't know much about them, one thing we do know is that Larse is very good at getting backsides moving. This turbo-themed EP boasts 4 original deep body-disco cuts, the standouts being the sublime and totally glamorous "Hot" and the (possibly even better?) Adana Twins remix, which is indeed based around a twisting bassline. What's not to love?

Review: Dani Plessow dons the Motor City Drum Ensemble name with Say A Prayer signaling a return to the production game following his much publicized creative burnout. It's clear that Plessow's period of convalescence has worked wonders, with the four tracks here every bit as deep and dusty as the much vaunted Raw Cuts series upon which the MCDE project was launched skywards. Proceedings open with the two part suite of the title track, laying down fuzzy chords and intermittent vocal swoons over a gritty 909 backbone on the opening track; part 2 meanwhile will have you digging out those Raw Cuts 12"s in order to do a MCDE master mix, such is its immediate warmth and neck snapping drums. Meanwhile, Plessow uses "The Stranger" as a chance to traverse bleepier, rattling techno terrain with superb results, whilst "SP11" is rasping high octane house at its finest.

Review: This powerhouse duo - a collaboration between none other than Foamo and Rack N Ruin - dropped their killer debut EP last year and since then things have been ominously quiet. Review: Whiskey Disco returns with a quartet of blisteringly good reworks from Dead Rose Music Company and Satin Jackets. Dead Rose Music Company open proceedings in style with "Nothin To Ya", a brilliantly low-slung, bass-heavy re-edit-turned-remix of the Jones Girls' "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" that turns the delightful original into a dubbed-out chunk of dancefloor chugginess. The more upbeat "Too Late", based on a lesser-known favourite, is almost as good. Satin Jackets' "The Hustle" provides some looser - but still formidably heavy - dewy-eyed disco-soul thrills, while "I Can See The Light" is more Balearic than a wet, sloppy kiss from a grinning stranger.

Review: The Legendary Sound Orchestra continues his attempt to provide disco edit lovers with something extraordinary, with a third collection of hand picked reworks. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from his own sparse, piano-heavy version of Silvetti's Salsoul classic "Spring Rain", to the rolling, bongo-laden goodness of 78 Edits' sprightly but loopy "Don't You Know". Highlights-wise, it's a toss-up between Alkalino's baggy disco-soul shuffler, "Have A Ball", and Jimmy The Twin's superb, TR-707-enhanced "Party Down". The latter, a horn-heavy chunk of upbeat disco-funk, is arguably the Bristol-based scalpel fiend's best work to date.

Review: Having found success blending chopped-up disco and soul cuts with head-nodding house rhythms, Luca Trevisi is in no rush the flip the script. Then again, why should he be? As this second collection of shuffling disco/soul/house blends proves, nobody else does head-nodding slo-mo and midtempo groovery quite as well. Ain't Nothing But A Groove offers few surprises, but a whole heap of excellent, floor-friendly productions (some, such as the brilliant "Get Down", which have previously been released as singles). While the balance between disco, funk, soul and house changes throughout - the jazzy "Vuonto Beat", for example, is almost a straight-up murky deep house cut - Trevisi's wonderful way with grooves constantly impresses.

Review: Wrongtom Meets Deemas J's album In East London was met with some serious levels of hype when it arrived on the reggae scene last September. "The strongest modern reggae set to emerge from the UK for many years" said The Wire. High praise indeed. So "Superteng", the second single to be released from the roots-inspired LP, is a toned-down affair, groove-driven and minimal, letting the lyrics do the talking. Featuring a cool and collected remix by Scoop & Alter Ego & Rico and the bonus addition of jungle mashup "Jump + Move + Rock" remixed by the one and only Benny Page, you can't mistake the top quality of this release. If you're a fan, buy the LP too, it's a modern reggae masterpiece.

Review: Anyone who decides to dedicate a fair chunk of his debut edits release to scalpel cuts of tracks from Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and Stevie Wonder must have gonads the size of watermelons. Sitting down could be an uncomfortable proposition, then, for the mysterious V, whose seven-track debut EP also includes chunky, floor-friendly re-tweaks of The Kinks and Sly & The Family Stone (as well as a couple of stonking disco bangers). While some would argue that much of the material here didn't need messing with, he's done an excellent job. The Dub of "Whole Lotta Love", for example, is pitched just right, offering much more bang and exactly the right amount of disco dubbiness.

Review: It's been a long journey for James Edward Jacob, from young thrash metaller in Leicester to aspiring dubstep producer in college, and now hot future bass property. This EP of his own VIP mixes is premier grade stuff, expertly produced and cleverly tweaked for different moods. "Fade" gets three different interpretations here - a club mix that sees big crescendos drop into totally nasty 4/4 garage basslines, a different club mix that goes deeper with soft pads and a retro Enya-goes-RnB vibe, and finally the Etherwood version, all melancholic DnB, forlorn vocals and piano fused with low bass and urgent beats.

Review: Chameleonic Bristolian Kahn continues his peerless run of releases with a killer self-titled release for the Blackbox label that's filed alongside his Deep Medi and Hotline transmissions in our affections. The immediate standout track is undoubtedly "Badman City" which features the incomparable vocals of Flowdan, the Bug collaborator who was sampled on Kahn & Neek's superb "Percy". Whilst Flowdan's delivery on that Bandulu cut was lifted roughly from his barrelling live MCing, here he's in notably more menacing form. Rider Shafique and fellow Young Echo acolyte Jabu also provide vocals with the latter's delivery on "Snake Eyes" sounding somewhat akin to Tricky aping Mike Skinner. A bold release from one of the UK's most impressive talents.

Review: Jay Shepheard's Retrofit imprint reaches its seventh release with this fine EP of old school sounds with an undeniably modern feel. "Hefty Done Me Right" begins proceedings with a house-disco hybrid sporting a particularly meaty analogue bassline, 80s electro vocal samples and shimmering pop synths, while "The Electric Model" marries a distinctly Kraftwerk-esque motorik vibe with Balearic disco sweeps and horns. Up next, "One Night In Puzon" opens with a tense rising string line, broken with a crystalline piano mosaic and deep squelching bass. Finally, TW closes proceedings with his own dub take on "Hefty Done Me Right", amping up the electro feel of the original with an MPC cut-up style reworking filled with heavy vocal samples and rolling piano stabs, transplanting the original from its Italian roots to 80s Harlem.

Review: Dusky have come far in quite a short space with their modern house music interpretations and make quite a decisive move with a high profile transfer from Simple Records to Aus Music. This is still prime, slickly executed house music but with a healthy amount of bass woven into the mix, not least on the fearsome "Alone". A meaty sub line pulses out under the crisp 4/4 while interludes of found-sound percussion come darting in amongst snippets of vocal for a surefire banger. "Dummy" likewise flexes its brawn with pride, from the snappy beat to the punchy bassline, even as the synth elements are intent on sending the track into more spaced-out places.

Review: It's been a while since we've had contact with Beaten Space Probe, but presumably his probe is still operational because here we have a follow up to last year's debut. Once again this Japanese producer (aka Shota Tanaka) is in party mood with four authentically 70s sounding slices of disco. "Boogie Rice" marries Philly strings with a killer funk riff and "In Your Soul" is a tour de force of female belters; "Feel Like Dancing" is the standout with a Nightfever funk that'll make you strut like Travolta, although "River Magic" come a close second with its emotional orchestration and tight guitar licks.

Review: Lino 'Alkalino' Rodriguez continues to yo-yo between edits and original productions. Following some decent deep house outings for his own Audaz imprint, here he returns to the world of edits with a ten-track collection of impressively varied reworks. Predictably, he merrily switches between styles at will, touching on '80s AOR B-sides ("Shine On"), Italo (the excellent "Let's Give It A Try"), Balearica ("Secret Life", a rework of "City Lights"), disco-funk (the bumpin' "Untie Me Down"), art-disco (Arthur Russell rework "Keep On Doing") and industrial funk (the Nietzer Ebb-ish "New Beat"). Review: A belated but welcome return for Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew. This time round, though, they're not cutting-up classic boogie tunes in a Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house style. Instead, they offer up three woozy, all-enveloping deep house cuts from The Groovers. "Here's To You Mr Robinson" laces a classic jazz vocal over a smooth-as-silk deep house groove, while "Make Me Feel" turns a delicious jazz-funk jam into a deep, soulful treat - all twinkling Rhodes, edible horns and sweeping strings. Review: Masters of the crafty art of bootlegism and funk edits, the not-so-pseudonymous Defkline and Red Polo get busy on four classics with crucial party-boosting results. "Space Cowboy" takes the Steve Miller classic and coats it with a whole slew of classic rhymers from ODB to Fiddy. "Turn The Beat Around" takes the disco classic of the same name and reboots it with chunky house 4/4. "It Ain't No Good", meanwhile, takes De La Soul and Chaka Khan's soul-blistered ballad and gives it just a cheeky mild skank.
