Review: Luca Trevisi is LTJ Xperience, an Italian producer who began his career in the 1980s. As resident DJ at two of the most famous Italian clubs of the time: Kinky in Bologna and Cap Creus in Imola, he was one of the first Italian jocks to spin house and to reintroduce black music, jazz and latin-bossa classics from the '70s. These are the kind of tracks that gave birth to the acid jazz and rare groove movements. The Beggar Groove LP is his new album, the fourth dedicated to the 'research' of disco/funk, from its origins to today's rhythms feelings on the dancefloor. The smooth acid jazz of the opening track "Way Down" would make even Ludovic Navarre stand up and notice, while soulful and compelling deep funk of "Fooling You" can equally impress. According to the label, the title track of the album is the most demand track by the artist and never released digitally until now.

Saturn's Return - (5:54) 120 BPM
from $1.87
Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

Review: Considering Taxman typically sends out a key release once a year, the fact this has landed so soon after his "Amended" EP is already a blessing. The fact that the sounds on here are properly next level takes us into bless overload..."Scanners" has a unique rolling looseness thanks to some addictive shakers (and an elephantine bassline), "Wonky Riddim" lives up to its name with a strange trippy sci-fi feel while "On The Wire" is a classic gutter-chomping riot piece with an array of stretched bass textures. "Chameleon" plays counter to the ruffage with a cool cosmic funk vibe that's kinda reminiscent of J Majik's early 2000s work while "TDK" goes even further back to the jungle foundations with some head-melting drum edits. As with everything Taxman releases - this is serious business from start to finish.

Review: London's Tephra & Arkoze have been supported by the likes of B.Traits, Basher, Skeptical and John B. The quality and depth of their productions on this new EP will only get them more hype. Firstly, they are joined by Survey for the furious, speedy opener "This World" which blurs the lines between Drum n Bass and simply, er, bass. Things get moodier and more atmospheric on the slinky "Nighthawk" and MC Fokus joins the crew for the dark and nasty title track complete with scattershot beats. Lastly "Inside Out" wraps things up with ethereal synth washes and growling low frequencies.

Review: Permanent Vacation boss Benjaimin Frohlich is back. The man in Munich now presents the remixes of his fab 2016 release Rude Movements and gets an all-star cast to lend their deft hand at a remix. First up is the imitable Lauer; king of all things neon-lit and retro who delivers the goods (as always) with his rendition of "Amos", while fellow Frankfurter Shan stays true to the classic house aesthetic on his deep late night groove: "Holloway" is injected with spooky analogue synth leads, chunky analogue arpeggios and rusty rhythms with the good ol' clap on the kick for good measure. On the flip, it's all about the sludgy and tape saturated "Spitting Image" reinterpreted Jack Pattern (actually a Swiss trio, would you believe) where their slow motion EBM mutation calls to mind the work of Slugbug or L/F/D/M. Wicked!

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

Review: British techno stalwart Luke Slater is now two decades into his ongoing Planetary Assault Systems adventures. To celebrate, he's handed over tracks recorded over the last 20 years to a hand picked group of remixers. It's a faultlessly floor-focused affair, with Lucy, Steve Bicknell, Function and Slam - whose acid-fired re-make of "Temporary Suspension" is an album highlight - all delivering typically no-nonsense interpretations of Slater's tracks. The producer himself delivers a handful of 'live edits' - versions created for his live shows - while Detroit legends Octave One smother "Booster" in classic Motor City melodies and the most positive of synthesizer refrains.

Review: SpectraSoul really aren't messing around with Ish Chat. Now hitting their third release, they've put out an album-sized trove of floor fire over the last year. No compromises, each cut has been exceptional and ticked a completely different box, this is the sound of two men on their absolute A-game... "Second Chance" is a persistent roller with pristine drums, an evocative faraway vocal refrain and lush grainy textures, "Fade Away" is just absolute darkness with a gruff, ruff BC-style grit to the bassline, "On & On" is a dreamboat roller with so much emotion you'll melt any crowd you play this to. Finally "Beat Keeps" taps into a halftime mentality with a whole gamut of gully twists along the way. Powerful stuff.

Review: Despite the EP cover, this UK bass producer ain't no joker. He's recently produced the likes of Wiley and regularly delivers his merciless bass attitude through imprints like Crucast. The eponymous original track marries frenzied 4 x 4 beats with meandering wobble bass riffs and cheeky samples. On the remix duties Grime delivers a totally cool hip-hop influenced version that's full of moody headnodding vibes, Skepsis meanwhile goes for giant stadium-sized build ups and shrill bass riffs whilst last but not least Holy Goof turns in an amalgamation of all of the above with added 8-bit bleeps for good measure.

Review: Fresh from denting Southpoint's discography earlier this month, Arkwright returns with four new deep bruisers on Wheel & Deal. It's business from the very beginning as "Bludclart" develops with a really natural rolling pace while "Black Mesa" leans things out with vast moments of dubspace, sudden flurries of atmospheres and some crazily stretched bass textures and "Homeward" applies more of a hip-hop/beatsy approach with its vocal cuts and latent funk in the rhythm. Finally "Fat Stacks" kicks its slo-mo heels with a warped sub vibe that really lives up its name. Watch out for those trumpets bruh.

Review: RDG's Circle Vision creeps up from behind and surprises us with their first V/A EP. Satisfaction levels remain fully flexed as the whole collection is a shoes-off, brain-blown and hair-raised affair throughout: Causa bends minds with a really tripped out bass drone and drum arrangement, Taiko gets all snarly, slimy and similarly illusionary with weirded-out reverse textures and resampled. Deeper again Dark Tantrums devil up the dance with tightly coiled tension while the bossman shoots us to the stars with the spacious space-bound sub stepper "Galaxy Run". Visionary to infinity...

Review: Lighters up! Metrik unleashes one of the biggest emotional moments of his impeccable second album Life Thrills..."We Got It". Coated with Rothwell's breath-taking vocal power and fully charged with a prime piano hook, it's nothing short of modern day soul. Now with added remix power S.P.Y adds a vicious BC style reese, sharper breaks and more space around the vocal while Bobby Tank flips the switch with a silky, wavy 23rd century disco version. Metrik's got it, S.P.Y's got it, Bobby Tank's got it...You got it.

Review: Given his credentials and track record, it's unsurprising that original disco and boogie artists are willing to let Joey Negro play around with their biggest hits. His first stab at this kind of multi-track remix, 2014's Remixed With Love, was such a success that he's decided to unleash another swathe of revisions over two vinyl double-packs. This edition features some killer reworks, including a sublime, on-point rearrangement of Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a rolling, dubbed-out version of Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper" that rivals Larry Levan's classic remix. The veteran producer also successfully turns Pockets' "Come Go With Me" into a classic soulful house rub, and pushes Thelma Houston's "I'm Here Again" further towards disco anthem territory.

Review: By anyone's standards, ESP Institute enjoyed a hugely successful 2016, delivering a string of fine singles and killer albums from Moscoman and Lord of the Isles. This first digital missive of 2017 is equally as impressive, and comes from the previously unheard Nancy Azzuro. Opener "Grace" is undoubtedly impressive; a rolling trip into 21st century dub disco territory blessed with killer percussion work and an addictive electronic bassline. "Illustrations & The Large" is a deliciously woozy and melodious chunk of softly spoken Balearic deep house, while the loopier "Teen Bee" fixes ghostly melodies onto a loose and warm disco-house groove.

Review: The simply titles Art of Tones collection gathers together some of Ludovic Llorca's numerous contributions to the ever-expanding catalogue of Fred Everything and Mike Fresco's Lazy Days Recordings label. It boasts a range of original productions - the old school house bounce of "The Right Moment", the Italian dream house revivalism of "Elephants", the tech-tinged deep house soul of "Unstopped", and so on - plus a cluster of remixes by likeminded producers (a fine rework by The Revenge of "Unstopped", and a sparkling, Balearic deep house rub of "Elephants" by Fred Everything), and even a forgotten remix by Llorca himself (his bumping, string-drenched dub of Tortured Soul's "You Found A Way"). Predictably, it's an accomplished and entertaining selection, full of melodious, club-ready treats.

Review: If you were around in 2006 and you hadn't heard Oxia's legendary anthem "Domino", you must have been sleeping under a rock! The track has certainly stood the test of time; so much so that the French producer has decided to celebrate its ten year anniversary with a series of remixes by some of the scene's current best. Some may if it 'aint broke why fix it? But rest assured that these renditions are equally worthy of your attention and come courtesy of Agoria's Sapiens imprint. They're all good, but our favourites had to be German duo; the Innervisions affiliated Frankey & Sandrino with their slinky and hypnotic take that shows us all just how you make a 'dark journey track', while m_nus alumnus Matador serves up a more hard hitting version where tough drums support adrenalised drones and Detroit style string stabs. Finally the master himself Robag Wruhme delivers the goods as always with his rather sublime "Lasika remix". The man's uncanny ability to recreate tracks that can compete with the original's quality is something to behold.

Review: Having spent the last few years delivering pleasingly melodious, far-sighted singles on Argot, Skylax, Deepblak and Running Back, Maya Bouldry-Morrison has joined the Honey Soundsystem family. Where Are We Going Is the Brooklyn-based artist's first album since 2013, when she was regarded as one of 100% Silk's most talented producers. As full-length adventures go, it's undeniably enjoyable, with Bouldry-Morrison delivering warm, retro-futurist cuts that cannily combine elements of vintage Chicago deep house and Italian dream house tropes with the breakbeat-driven shuffle of rave-era British dance records and occasional Motor City style flourishes. While there's naturally plenty of club-ready material throughout, it's also the sort of album that you can comfortably listen to in the comfort of your own home.

Review: On his recent releases under the Nu alias, Rolf Fabian Laumer has giddily fused the smooth, clicking rhythms of minimalist tech-house with a range of global influences. The results have, by and large, been superb, sitting somewhere between sun-kissed warmth and haunting iciness. He's at it again on "Man O To", layering a drifting, chant-like vocal over a backing track that somehow joins the dots between cumbia, dub and tech-house. French maestro Pepe Bradock handles remix duties, first wrapping the vocal around a typically dusty, off-kilter house rhythm, before laying down a slightly tougher, stripped back Dub that's the EP's standout moment.

It sees label mainstays Serge and Alden Tyrell join forces to deliver a scorching rework of the previously unheard "Beats". As you might expect from the basement-loving duo, it packs a serious punch, thanks in no small part to their surging drum machine rhythms and expert use of build-and-release arrangement. The experienced pair are masters of creating and retaining energy, and their percussion sounds are always as jacking as they come. In other words, it's another club slammer.

Review: Next up on Bristol's Futureboogie is Alex Warren aka Kiwi who has had previous releases on the likes of Optimo Music, Blase Boys Club and Sneaky Music in addition to promoting for well known London parties and clubs like Orlando Boom/Kate Boss and The Nest. The versatile producer wastes no time getting stuck in, starting out with the explosive "Orca" which features one of the most amazing arpeggios this side of "I Feel Love". There's more vintage, synth driven disco vibes on "Minke" or "Logmans Break" while the feel good nu-disco vibes of "Pygmy" are reminiscent of modern greats like Jay Shepheard or Milton Jackson.

Review: Constantly about 20 steps ahead of the rest, Bop's sublime brews are nothing short of future. It's evident from the moment the cosmic drum arrangement and ambient textures roll out on "An Order" to the final echoes of the 23rd century soul "Space 2 Breathe". Darker dancefloor thirsts will be quenched by purring workout "So Unloved", the data-spiked glitch-funk "Untitled Pattern 47" and Anile's super sharp stepper remix. Fancy a cuppa?

Review: Go go gadget gully: Tsuki returns to Bulletproof after a liquid cameo role on Bass Legion with four more messages of menace. "Inspector Gadget" riffs with a Clipz-style infectiousness while "Addiction" tackles serious social challenges with the ugliest, croakiest bassline possible. "Ruff Endz" is all about the buzzy higher end bass texture he's making his signature. Finally a cheeky VIP that doubles up the bassline pressure of last year's damager "Street Wars". Fresh.

Review: Any new material from Luke Slater under the Planetary Assault Systems alias is something to celebrate, but rarely has the techno veteran dropped such an expansive set as Arc Angel. Boasting a positively overwhelming 20 tracks over three weighty slabs of vinyl, the first PAS album for five years is as spacey, hypnotic and intoxicating as anything in the British techno legend's vast catalogue. While mostly focused on atmospheric, Motor City influenced dancefloor futurism - and, let's face it, few do that better than Slater - Arc Angel also boasts a handful of inspired ambient cuts, some vintage, UK style "intelligent techno", and occasional nods towards UK contemporaries such as Surgeon, James Ruskin, Mark Broom and Oliver Ho.

Review: Sao Paulo's DJ Andrezz is back on Bryan Gee's legendary Liquid V Recordings with some more, you guessed it: liquid drum and bass. "Take You There" is the kind of emotive and ethereal breakbeat science that reminds us of LTJ Bukem, but the fierce riddims, dubby aesthetics and soul/jazz elements of "Free Your Mind" will get you shakin' your ass even more so. "Rigel Brightness" has you covered for the darker side of things on this moody and bass driven stepper. This is A. Rodrigues De Araujo's fourth release for the London institution and by listening to this you can sure tell why!

Review: Here we have the second release of the year from our favourite Russian disco don, Sunner Soul. He's taking it mellow for January, hence the title "Slow Down EP". There are three slinky cuts to enjoy, two of which are by the man himself, with the title track being a delicious slice of four to the floor retro boogie, and "Loveline" rocking the percussion-heavy spacey funk vibe. Lastly we encounter the laid back, elastic bass and clavinet-laden funky sing-along "House Party" by Fresh Wesley and re-edited by VMR.

Review: Spanish producer Rayko has delivered some impressive dancefloor magic courtesy of his Rare Wiri label. Ranging from re-edits to deep nu-disco and everything in between, the imprints sound is all encompassing. That philosophy is fully explored here on Retro Future Disco, bringing all kinds of disco approaches to the table. Highlights include the schmokin' 70s jazz-funk of "Hot Head Disco" by Psychemagik, the legendary Il Flagranti's rare re-edit of new wave classic "Walking In The Rain" by Flash & The Pan and the dreamy, star-crossed synth-pop of "In Your Eyes" by Yam Who? Something for everyone here.

Review: Producers Marten Roberto and Nikolay Danev made their collaborative debut last summer, delivering a fine chunk of R&B and electrofunk-influenced house via the Mr Moon label. Here they join forces once more, this time on Yam Who's ISM imprint. Title track "Alive" is a more intoxicating, early morning concoction that their previous effort, with dubbed-out horn lines, wild Hammond organs and a wearily soulful vocal riding a heavy dub disco groove. It's really rather good, and comes accompanied by a cowbell-heavy, piano-sporting peak-time rework by the previously mentioned Yam Who. As if that's not enough to get the juices flowing, they've also included the swirling, stab-heavy, soul-flecked deep house bounce of "Everybody Loves Disco".

Review: Roman Flugel has been making electronic music for about a quarter of a century, but as Black Acid demonstrates, his productions show no sign of getting stale. "Too Hot To Sleep" is the big dance floor cut here; centring on a jittery, shaky minimal house groove and a sub-bass that's inspired by 2-step's darkest excesses, it's an unforgettable, individualistic track. "Troubled Mind" is slower and more abstract, but provides a neat segue into the title track. There, Flugel brings together many of his influences, including electro drums, minimal house and the melodies of IDM. "Work & TV" features one further surprise, with Flugel reverting to the minimal sounds of "Sleep", this time without the foreboding London bass.

Review: Jelly Bean Farm is a new label intent on delivering all kinds of bass and techno goodness to the world. They don't mess about either, beginning life with big, hefty compilations. This, one, Jelly Bean Farm - Exit, is no different: presenting 12 of the most forward-facing cuts around. Highlights include the moody synthwork and machine gun percussion of "Locate & Destroy" by Phrixus, the spacey tech meets drum frenzy of "Dat Dat" by Loss, the deep, minimal beats of "Turbine" by Henry Greenleaf and the alt-ghetto grooves of "Facile" by Kinsman. Dope sounds!

Review: Razor 'N' Tape has been slowly expanding its' outlook in recent years, focusing on original productions just as much as re-edits. Here, they've pulled off something of a coup by snapping up two fresh cuts from Dutch heavyweights Kraak & Smaak. There's the clipped Chic guitars, jaunty analogue bass, undulating Syclops lead lines and gravelly soul vocals of "Way Back Home", and the filter-heavy disco-house throb of "Seb's Party". The package also includes two tasty re-rubs apiece from Ben Sun and Tiger & Woods. Sun offers up a smooth, nu-disco/deep house fusion, followed by a chunkier, classic house sounding affair, while Tiger & Woods offer two superb variants on the same throbbing, electrofunk-meets-Balearic piano house template.

Review: Disco edit meister Badboe, recently made all our Christmases come at once by releasing a full extended play single, Ghetto Funk Testament. Here however, he's returned to his old ways by teasing us with just one new track. But what a track it is! "Under Your Spell" is a raucous party breaks jam features a strutting Go-Go beat and retro Fresh Prince-style rap from MC Shureshock. On remix duties, Phibes adds some edgier metallic bass, DR Packer opts for a soft and bouncy shuffle, the DiscObeta DoOva is pure daisy age retro hip-hop and Trotter goes for big room beat fun.

Review: One of Germany original junglist forefathers Bassface Sascha and partner in grime Feindsoul return to Ruffneck Ting following their cameo on the Bristol label's epic The Xtraordinary League Of Junglists album last year. Packing four tracks we're treated to the full spectrum: a blunderbuss Taxman-style stormer on "Patchwork", a more stripped back mid 90s Playaz-style bassline on "Steppin On My Feet", a savage tripletty swagger on "Worldwide" and a riffy jam that wouldn't have sounded amiss on Dope Dragon back in the day. Cool operators operating correctly from Manheim to Bristol: Ruffneck Ting never disappoint.

Review: "If You Can't Beat Em" demands you raise your lighters. Bad news for non-smokers. Good news for skankers thanks to the swaggering, well-measured dub hook that really digs in on the breakdown. Incredible news for the mandem who love a gully riff. "Jazz Hands" puckers up with more of a classical smooch thanks its majestic swooning piano intro before going all-out sloppy snog with its butt-grunting bass tones on the drop. Two killer tracks loaded with contrast... These are hard to beat.

Review: Hamburg house heroes Diynamic are back with Four To The Floor 08 where they serve up some tough main room tech house to get your people moving! First up is the Afro futurist journey that is "Zulu" by Brigado Crew & Crisstiano which will appeal to fans of Innervisions or Yoruba Soul. The harbour city's favourite sons Adana Twins serve up the dark journey track "Uncompromising" which will transfix crowds with its sense of dancefloor drama. Rafael Cerato & Artbat's soulful tech house journey "Uplift" had us reminiscing about the Dennis Ferrer sound of old while finally Definition's "Pretend To Fly" is certainly geared for those hands in the air moments; expect a reaction from the crowd when this one drops. Either when that roaring vintage synth arpeggio comes creeping in or the heartfelt vocals alike.

Review: Melbourne, Australia based disco larrkin Dawn Again returns to Hot Digits Music with four joints of smooth soul goodness. A producer on the rise in the words of the label and the evidence is sure here. "Hot Tub Lonnie" is the kind of lo-slung and loopy bliss for sunny Sunday afternoon backyard BBQ parties while "I Want You Hugh" continues on with the slo-mo vibes on this clever edit of a very familiar classic we all know and love. Finally "Zozesphino" goes for more of a soul/funk vibe and again samples a certain diggers delight and geared for ergonomic modern DJ use. Nice one!

Review: Local Talk has pulled off something of a coup here, somehow persuading legendary Detroit house producer Terrence Parker to contribute a predictably hot two-tracker. "Gratiot Avenue Piano" is a thrillingly celebratory workout, all told, with Parker layering bold, hammered-out piano riffs and rich gospel organs atop a punchy, cymbal-heavy drum machine groove. It feels like the kind of track that will inspire spontaneous acts of clothes removal - tops off, boys - when dropped at the right time. Parker continues the stab-heavy approach on slightly deeper, groovier B-side "Unconditional", which wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Strictly Rhythm 12" from 1993.

Review: After years of killer cuts on Fokuz and Celsius, longstanding Austrian soul seekers Roy Green & Protone make their Spearhead debut with four on-point rollers and a selection of well-welcomed collaborations... "The Healer" leads with a breezy, roomy chiming aesthetic that fools you into the idea you're dreaming before "Why Don't You" kicks you hard in the wake stakes with its rolling fretless bass and lingering pianos. "Carpaccio Funk" continues the real bass feel, this time with a loose-stringed double bass chatting away under low key trumpets and a classic break that has SG's stamp all over it. Finally "Arrivee" shuffles in a sweet closure. Spacious and restrained it's the type of track that fits in everywhere and never leaves your playlist.

Review: Ashley Burchett has been releasing on Token since its inception a decade ago, so the direction on Metropolitan comes as a surprise. The title track is more direct than is Burchett's usual appraoch, with a fizzling din riding an up-tempo, linear rhythm, heavy drums and cheese-wire sharp percussion. It sounds like SP-X going head to head with Robert Hood. On "The Absent Mind", there is another unexpected move; the UK producer delivers a metallic, clanging rhythm that fuses Chain Reaction's dubby repetition with the locked on, linear approach of the aforementioned Mr Hood. Only on "Fallen Columns" does O stay close to the stepping sound that he made his name with - but even there, the approach is understated and ghostly.
