Review: Polish mash-up merchant DJ Twister can always be relied upon to deliver the kind of tight bootleg blends that send dancefloors into a flurry of flailing arms and instinctive, animal-like yelps and cheers. This latest release is no different, containing a slew of bangers. As the title suggests, there's a chunky, robust swing to each of the cuts. "Handclap Swing" offers a floor-bating 21st century re-boot of funk staple "The Handclap Song", while opener "Hip-Hop Swing" laces a familiar party rap vocal over a bumpin' rhythm that weighs in somewhere between breaks and D&B. "Swing Or Not", meanwhile, turns The Fugees "Ready Or Not" into a skittish junglist rinse-out.

Review: Beards. Where'd they come from, eh? One minute it was all asymmetrical haircuts and 80s electro-pop, then the beards & disco brigade arrived. Well successful re-edit imprint Whiskey Disco proves that beards are still big and happening. YSE has a shady house music history but here displays his love of disco with four quality reworks. "Freeze Frame" is a vocoder-led slow building chant-a-long, "I Own The Boogie" is a deep and intense disco funker with killer basslines (both electronic and live), "Warm Wind Brewing" is a Fantasy Island/Love Boat romantic journey and "Here I Come Again" ends things with some raw disco seduction.

Review: Making for a matching with hard-to-imagine results, Mala gets the remix treatment from James Blake in his Harmonimix guise and issues it forth on his own Deep Medi imprint. It's a bold treatment from Blake, who teases the track to life on a twee arrangement of music box chimes and tones, while a central vocal coos out the dominant melody. There's a mid-section with the only discernible slither of beat which sounds like familiar Blake territory, not least through the bluesy keys vibe that it carries. However, it's the monolithic brass-aping clarion call which comes steaming in to steal the show, trumping out its orders in a suitably epic fashion which is nothing if not rousing.

Newcomers Lukeino and Homemade Weapons collab with Quadrant on "Mayday", as light synths circle above a crevasse of deep, cavernous bass. Cinematic and fresh with unique elements of crisp production and breakbeat influences, its got our seal of approval.

That it sounds fresh, despite its vintage sounds and inspiration, is testament to the quality of Howard's production. The bouncier "In Out" throws more classic UKG influence in the pot alongside the basement-bothering NJ garage sounds, resulting in a formidable peaktime banger.

Review: Paganini drops a heavy, functional EP for Sven Vath's label. The title track sets the tone for the release, a dark, slamming affair characterised by heavy, concrete beats and hissing percussion. A similar approach applies on "Fire In My Arms", but here the central riff drones like a strike craft moving in to drop its deadly payload.
"Polyester" is more straightforward, as a rolling groove drops and builds again, powered by metallic drums. "Hot" sees Paganini revisit the approach on the title track with insistent vocal samples littered in the arrangement, while "Parallel" features a vocal snippet intoning "I'm stretched" over a belching acid line.

Review: Somnambulant sonic flavours abound as NY house duo make their debut on Southern Fried with "Stay Up Here". Swaying with delicate pianos yet pumping with a prominent acid hook and sparkling with Miss Bee's lush vocal, it's deep without any danger of limpness. Remix-wise both Bonar Bradberry and The Rhythm Odyssey deliver the goods. Bonar spaces things out a little and adds a trippier, more yearning edge to the groove while The Rhythm Odyssey (AKA Dean Meredith from Chicken Lips) dub-funks out the whole affair with a powerful synth bassline. Lovely.

Review: Harry 'Midland' Aguis has been responsible for some Aus gems, not least his 2010 debut with Ramadanman and this two track Trace maintains his Midas touch for the label. The title track contains trace elements (geddit?) of Midland's previous work as thickly delivered synth tones combine deftly with booming 4/4 kicks and the sort of nonsensical vocal hook that worms its way all too easily into your cerebral cortex. Still though our favourite however is "For (Yacht) Club Use Only", which is clearly inspired by the Delroy Edwards production of the very similar name.

Review: The electro-swing bug has caught on in Greece judging by this fledgling Hellenic label's sixth release. Palov is a veteran DJ from Athens, and here he flexes his production muscles over four tracks. "Moving Next Door" takes an old Louis Prima-style trumpet sample and teases it out over four and a half minutes to great effect. "Bandido" is more upbeat and features sassy vocals from Monique Maion, "Captain Pandelis" displays a more hip-hop groove and features the voice of an old-skool crooner. Lastly "Waste Of The Time" manages to successfully fuse vintage swing band sounds with reggae!

Being so unashamedly funky in a game where straight-faced hardmen poses are rife can bring its own problems, but with vibes coming in thick and fast from co-conspirator Saxxon throught this unique EP, there's no time to worry about all that; everyone is just far too busy dancing. Add the emotively dark "Step Inside", the irrepressible flair and snap of "Neck Funk" and the nasty neuro-jungle madness that is "Rise Up" and you find yourself in possession of one of this year's most impressively unique releases. Big sounds, bigger grooves.

Review: Balls is Wink's first single in many, many years, and it sounds like he is playing homage to his pure techno roots. The "Big Mix" is as its title suggests, a jacking, wiry rhythm festooned with analogue yelps, trancey - with a small 't' - riffs and a grinding, aggressive swing. The 'Groove' version is also inspired by older sounds, with a ravey siren riff and rolling percussion, reminiscent of Masa's "Basscharger", prevailing. The third version - "Groove mix - No Synth" - calls to mind the recent Function reshape of Planetary Assault Systems, with its crashing snares and epic riffs, while the confusingly titled "Big Mix - Radio Edit" revolves around a noisy, acid-soaked breakdown that would indeed require balls to be played on daytime radio.

Those with a penchant for Greek taverna flavours should hold tight for the rustic groove on "Orienta Patria". Nice work.

Review: Samurai, the hugely respected drum & bass label that under the watchful eye of DJ Presha brings the world the finest in deep, dark beats from beyond the 170+ realm. This time they've hit up ASC once more for his own mashed up brand of techno-infused drum & bass straight from his own cold, calculating mind. Close, creeping and stunningly hard, although "Polemic" is softened slightly by a swirling sci-fi synth, there's no mistaking its clinical edge. "Oracle" takes off-beats and creates a master work of atmospherics with them. Minimal and clean, it builds to a shuffling crescendo amidst the smallest of pad interference. Unnervingly good.

Review: Echodub bossman Alex Cowles (better known, production-wise, under his DFRNT moniker) can usually be relied on to provide some authentically ocean-deep sounds. That's certainly the case on this varied EP for 2020 Vision offshoot Fina. At times, it sounds as if he's been listening to classic records by fellow Edinburgh native Aqua Bassino (the calming, jazzy "The Way You Look at Me" and intoxicating, super-deep "Start Changing Tempo"), while at others, he seems to have imbued just the right amount of fine single malt (check the sleepy midtempo vibes of "Sugar Free" and the pulsing sub and dreamy vocals of "Nobody Stop Me"). Throughout, there's a delicious musicality at work that's never less than delightful.

Here they explore their vaults and dust off some of the most genre-defining, idiosyncratic tracks that have helped shape the phenomenon we know today. Review: Having previously impressed with suitably deep cuts on Join The Dots, Remote, Kolour Ltd and Tusk Wax, British duo Zoo Look pop up on Morris Audio with another trio of Rhodes-laden tracks. Opener "Over Me" sets the tone, lacing an atmospheric vocal over an Outboxx-ish slice of luscious deepness. Thrillingly, it also features a swinging breakdown and some distinctly snappy beats. Detroit Swindle delivers the obligatory remix, adding a little bumpin' energy to the bottom-end groove and tweaking the vocal within an inch of its life. Jazzier bonus cut "The Sound of Someone", all woozy chords, spoken word vocals and snaking sax samples, completes a decent package.

Review: Prolific Parisian producer Naibu has a history of experimentation. This is his latest masterpiece released on Horizons, a label he's built a strong bond with since he first emerged on the drum and bass scene. It's a brilliant play on light and shadow of D&B - between the resonant depths of sub pressure and the glimmers of beauty in his expressive use of instruments and exotic samples that show snippets of life. Rivalling the likes of Break and Calibre with his affinity for creating full bodies of work rather than a succession of singles, Naibu is one of the few producers out there still interested in playing out soundscapes and stories; playing with structure and telling a tale.
