Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

Third Eye (feat Harry Shotta) - (5:18) 175 BPM
from $1.93
Review: Manchester's North Base is normally found on labels like Shogun Audio and Audioporn, while Turno can usually be found on Low Down Deep or Sweet Tooth. Here though, these mighty titans collide on the Viper Music label. The results are typically explosive. A one-track release, "Third Eye" is a single epic that compensates for like, four of other producer's cuts. Beginning with moody synth work and an ominous rap from Harry Shotta, all mayhem arrives at 1:28 when the fierce metallic bassline and stop/start steppy beats blow up. Dancefloor chaos (in a good way).

Review: Oh boy.. Three of modern bass music's finest players collide for the first in a series of collaborative long players on Deep Medi. The results - as you'd expect just reading the line-up - speak for themselves. Every artist's signatures is coded deep into the collection; Kahn's unpredictability and robustness, Commodo's grit and funk and Gantz often unfathomable depths and eastern twangs are all present as we wriggle and writhe to the detuned harmonies of "Crystal Collect", get twisted on the tripped out drum dynamic of "Kibosh" and lose ourselves in the spacious jazz-minded drums of "Unmistakeable". Truly unique.

Review: Murderation: Filthy Habits have been pushing out high grade drum & bass for some years now, but this is a whole new level. Highlights include the way "Artificial Intelligence" subverts everything you know about drops with its rising, paranoid riff; the way "1.17AM" creates the sensation of driving 100mph down the wrong side of the motorway; the way "Retaliation" buzzes and jitters like a digital bees nest on fire and the way that sudden extra jungle fill on "Yeah" well and truly knocks you off your feet each and every time. Powerful, uncompromising and utterly, utterly filthy.

Review: The Balearic scene of the mid '80s is an ever-popular genre, there's just something forever cool about its laissez faire attitude where anything interesting with a groove got thrown in the mix no matter how weird the choice might be. Leo Mas was there, alongside Alfredo, spinning at Amnesia, and now he begins to tell the tale via this new compilation series. The 12 tracks here range from flute driven hippy jams ("Gil") to sleazy Italian EBM/disco ("Satan In Love") and Melody FM balladry ("l'Ultima Notte") via droney Goth ("Clouds Over Thin Paper"). Bonkers, just the way it should be.

Review: Greece's Quincy Jointz selects the sixth volume of his concept Lime Sorbet compilation. Lime Sorbet was always the compilation series for open minded music fans and so is also volume six. From sunshine vibes, funky grooves and breakbeat through to house or downbeat. Once again Quincy selects a special mixture of unreleased music by well-known and upcoming artists. Block rockin' beats courtesy of Valique with "Long Journey" (Quincy Jointz remix) will sort you for deep funk, cheeky crooner Louie Austen is back since the electroclash days with the sleazy soul of of "Make You Move" (Quincy Jointz remix) and Stuttgart's Tobe Tronic serves up the deep, breaks driven nu-disco of "Night Drums".

Review: Polish heavyweights Catz 'N' Dogz has had a quiet year by their usually prolific standards. It would be fair to say, though, that these two cuts have been worth waiting for. "It's Happening" is a warm, rich and groovy affair, with fluttering deep house notes playing second fiddle to a booming disco bassline, flanged vocal samples and huggable drums. "Our Crazy" feels dirtier and a little more intense, with restless arpeggio lines and nagging electronic percussion combining perfectly with the duo's deliciously dense, tribal-influenced drums and chiming, marimba style lead lines. It's the kind of track you whack on to raise the temperature on the dancefloor when things are flagging, and every DJ needs a few of those in the crates.

Review: Danger by name, dangerous by sound: the rising Belgian brute dents the Digital Terror discography with four more bruising steppers. Collabo-wise "Turbulence" sees him teaming up with Nightfang for a laser-shooting riot act while "Empty Space" sees him barking at the moon with Kanine with some really pranged out bass groans. Solo-wise "About You" gets sexy on the vocal element yet militant on the guttural, spiked-out bass tones and "Extinction" is a mammoth of a track, stampeding with a harmonic bass riff and a relentless beats. Warrior level: dinosaur.

Review: Having 'done their thing' so successfully last year with their debut album, Moneyshot and Rackabeats stride into 2017 with their targets set on another LP. The trip starts here with the seasonally-timed hip-swaying party jam. "Love That I'm In" purrs with sultry vocals, flexed with rippled lyricism from long-time compadre Andy Cooper and laid back funk guitar/bass groove. Silky, sunny, catchy.. The Allergies continue to deliver some serious gold.

Review: Since first pitching up on Tartelet Records back in 2014, Wayne Snow has proved adept at joining the dots between dusty, left-of-centre deep house and silky modern soul. Freedom TV is the Berlin-based artist's debut album, and sees him further explore the loose, languid and effortlessly soulful style he's been developing over the last three years. While the album does contain some 4/4, floor-ready explorations, these tend towards the eccentric, MPC-driven style successfully explored by the likes of Seven Davis Jr. For the most part, Freedom TV is heady and intoxicating, with Snow's slick and emotion-rich vocals riding scratchy, sample-heavy backing tracks that meld deep house style electronics with future funk, R&B and neo-soul style grooves. The results are uniformly excellent.

Review: The fabric affiliated Houndstooth presents the forthcoming six-tracker Stairfoot Lane Bunker which follows up Paul Woolford's recent contribution to the Fabriclive mix series. The EP is described as an addendum to the mix, featuring several diverse cuts. From the tough and dystopian electro stomp of "Redrum" through to the glitched out neo-junglist anthem "Replicant" not to mention a couple of ambient/noise soundscapes in the form of "Telepathic Dog" or "Five Lane Ends". Even as the man behind seminal releases for the likes of Planet E, XL Recordings and Running Back, Special Request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation.

Review: For their latest trip into fireside-warm disco-house territory, Diggin' Deeper has turned to the twin talents of Jay Airiness and Perlair. The duo kicks things off with "Mystic Love", an expertly chopped, looped, tweaked and dubbed-out re-make of a deliciously tactile and loved-up jazz-funk classic from the disco era. While the track getting the treatment is almost untouchable (seriously, it's a stone cold classic), they've done a terrific job in delivering a re-edit that takes it in a totally different direction. "Sunset Disco" is, if anything, even sunnier and breezier, with the production partnership working some sparkling loops hard before unleashing a samba disco inspired crescendo. Nicely done, lads.

Review: We have waited a very long time for new music from Bristolian bass ruler, Pharoah K. Well now he's opened up the tomb and unleashed a new EP. There's only two tracks mind, but they're good 'uns. With both cuts displaying a tremendous skill for island-style percussion, the EP's title track, "Bora" is the softer of the two. Seductive and beguiling, the rhythmical sways of the tune are an exercise is sassy swagger. "Tusk" meanwhile, is all bout the elephantine hip-hop, an angry, brassy snorter. Glad this ancient king has been resurrected.

Review: 'Queen of the Night' Loleatta Holloway returns with the 'Can't Let You Go' EP featuring remixes from Louie Vega, Josh Milan and Yvonne Turner. 'Can't Let You Go' is one of the last recordings from Holloway before her sad passing in 2011. Now it's been given the chance to shine thanks to Turner and Vega Records. Over a massive eight remixes, 'Can't Let You Go' is taken on different house journeys. "Yvonne Turner Main mix" is timeless house music through and through lead by warm Rhodes notes, steel drums and a pretty swell brass section supporting Holloway's powerful voice. Our other favourite, the "Louie Vega Roots mix" has that unmistakably soulful and uplifting NYC sound by one of the genre's true masters.

Review: You know the drill; it's another monumental compilation from London's 20/20 Recordings, the fresh-faced dubstep label, which can mean only quality and quantity above all else. There is plenty for any sort of bass fan to sink their teeth into right here, starting from the murky waters of Deft's future-dub, though to Belatron's icy grime-like riddims, and Caution's noxious hybrid beats. All in all, there's no one genre here, just pure vibes, and a great deal of low frequencies form the deepest, darkest corners of the UK's production scene.

Review: Tyler Martens clearly likes to immerse himself in tropical vapours when working on his tunes, and his Stickybuds alias has produced some rather potent strains of bass music. This time he features alongise K+Lab and Kwadi for the Westwood Recordigns mandem, with a funky little hybrid bomb that touches apsects of disco, boogie, and straight-up breakbeat. Imagine a 70s funk tune reinterpreted through today's beat-centric dance approach, add in some sleek vocals, and you're somewhere there. There's an instrumental, too, for those wishing to mash it up with yet more killer breakbeat formulas.

Review: Jamie Tiller and Tako's Music From Memory now present Gaussian Curve's second album entitled The Distance. Comprised of Amsterdam's 'Young' Marco Sterk on machines, Melody As Truth boss Johnny Nash on guitar and Italian ambient hero Gigi Masin on synths. The trio follow up 2014's wonderful Clouds LP with more dreamy and ethereal balearica ("Suspended Motion") by way of vague kosmic rock flourishes ("T.O.R.") and bluesy tones like on the lush "Last Breath". Much like its predecessor, the album had been recorded in a mere few days in Sterk's studio near the city's infamous Red Light District and this opus could potentially be held in such high regard by critics too. It's a superb effort from start to finish and highly recommended.

Review: Dedicated to forging links between Hamburg and Berlin artists, it now seems that URSL is casting its gaze further afield. This split release seeks to explore outer space, a task that it commences in relatively low-key form with the mid-tempo acidic pulses of Ninze & Okaxy's "Apollo". The Innellea follow with a more foreboding contribution, "Ivy", which boasts a faster pace and and a bleak, ebm undercurrent. The space exploration mood changes again on Soukie & Windish's "Would You Swallow Your Thoughts?" as the URSL act probes the kind of spaced out deep techno groove that one would expect from Future Beat Alliance. Breky's "O Zi De Mai" is in a similar vein, albeit with a sax solo in the middle, while Jan Mir's "Love Face" is a slow-motion electronic disco workout.

Review: Forgotten Light man Leonce Nelson made his name by creating bespoke, off-kilter hip-hop and bass-heavy R&B remixes of Beyonce, Rihanna and Keyshia Cole. Here, he delivers his debut album, Insurgency. It's a pleasingly entertaining and varied affair that moves from the foreboding melodic motifs and bustling drums of "Snakes" to the UK funky influenced hustle of "Truffle Track", via a series of hard-to-pigeonhole cuts that draw inspiration from various hip-hop and electronica styles. Highlights include the booming, tropical influenced percussion and humid melodies of "Marimba Track", the undulating and bass heavy intensity of "Jungle" and the upbeat, carnival-friendly celebration that is "Apparition"

Review: The mighty Dutch trio Black Sun Empire come straight outta Holland with us an immense follow up to their last album Lights & Wires. Taking things back to basics, it's 100 per cent D&B here, taking on the neuro and tech end of the spectrum with full force, and featuring collabs with Noisia, Foreign Beggars, Rido and many more. Kicking off with the intense, industrial noise of "Feed The Machine" we are plunged into the deep end with their pounding bass, maxxed out sounds, synth manipulations and gruelling subs. Make sure you check out the fabulous "Dawn Of A Dark Day" with its catchy, urban lyrics and aggressive, stabbing beats and warping motorbike bass as well as the gloriously melancholic vocal of "All Is Lost" which is juxtaposed with the insane distortions and squeals of the main tune. Each tune is incredible.

Review: Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton is a long time friend of the FUSE London family, having previously contributed to a number of releases. Driven To Distraction, though, is his first FUSE outing since 2015. Interestingly, there's quite a bit of surprising variety amongst the two tracks; compare, for example, the title track's bouncy, deep house/acid house fusion. "Telegram", where wilder TB-303 acid lines and dubbed-out riffs ride an undulating, late night groove, is also rather nifty. In other words, it's a solid EP containing tracks tailor-made for different dancefloor situations.

Review: Zed Bias aka Dave Jones has made a welcome reappearance over the past few years with releases on Swamp 81 and D:Bridge's Exit label. As 24/7 shows, his work has provided inspiration to dub step, bass and garage producers. This is because the UK producer has an innate ability to move from mainstream friendly compositions - check the infectious MC natter on the title track - to more underground workouts like the raw rhythms on "Running Late" and the ominous "2CB", where he splices up hardcore era vocal shrieks with burning acid and a rude, raw rhythm. When Jones is on form, none of his peers can touch him.

Review: Two albums in six months. This could just be a world record in drum & bass. Not only that, but precision quality and serious attention to detail on both albums, too. Tailored 100% for the dance with a cool restrained, lean subtlety to each groove, each cut on Hackers shows us exactly where the Brazilian duo are at and what they're capable of. The buzzy, waspy sizzles of "Ghost Lab", the popping, clicking percussive flare and thick sub swing of "Papa Johnny", the unabashed gruffness of "One Drop". The list goes on. True DJ's producers with an eye on the funk and an eye on the gutter, Jam Thieves are smashing it.

Review: Sticky fingers Brazilians Jam Thieves have been tearing up the dance in the last few years with their subgenre-smelting dancefloor-focussed D&B. Misbehaving on the likes of Radius, Serial Killaz, and Hangar, they've found their spiritual home on Hype's Playaz where all styles are welcome as long they make you bounce... Which is exactly what these 10 tracks do. From the wild west whistles and far-out bass bumps on "The Hangman" and the Qanun twanging "Favela Funk" (with the similarly talented hot blooded Portuguese-speaking duo Bass Brothers), Jam Thieves have delivered a straight-up album of dancefloor bruisers and funkers with nothing contrived or written for album's sake. Refreshing.

Review: Having contributed a stellar track to Gerd Janson's Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, it's little surprise to see Leon Vynehall pop up on Running Back. Rojus (Designed To Dance) is an expansive eight trackaffair thati s likely to be as popular as 2014's Music For The Uninvited LP for Martyn's 3024 label. It's also predictably varied; contrast, for example, the drowsy ambient chords and twinkling electronics of opener "Beyond This", and the deep-jack-goes-rave sweatiness of "Beau Sovereign". Vynehall also finds space for the Balearic jazz-house swing of "Paradisea", the wall-of-sound Detroit deep house of "Blush", and the African influenced drum workout "...There Is You". In other words, it's a versatile cracker.

Review: Fresh from a fine contribution to Local Talk's fifth anniversary compilation, Sameed Rezayan makes his first appearance on G.A.M.M. It sees him exploring similar sonic territory - think jazzy, loop-based, soul-flecked deep house stompers - while serving up two tried and tested dancefloor treats. First up is "Bun", a bouncy and rolling house revision of a groovy chunk of harmonica and saxophone-laden soul-jazz goodness. It's really rather good, though lacks the sheer weightiness of the EP's other track, "Chao". This is, if anything, even loopier, with Sameed building the pressure throughout via darting electric piano keys, simmering strings and a stomping jazz-house groove.
