Review: For deep house diggers, Soichi Terada has long been a source of inspiration. While he's still active, it's the early '90s material he released on the Far East Recordings label - an imprint he founded soon after his graduation in 1990 - that most excites. Following the 2014 re-release of his sublime hook-up with Nami Shimada, "Sunshower", Rush Hour has decided to put together this excellent retrospective. Compiled by self-confessed fan Hunee, Sounds From The Far East contains a mixture of hard-to-find Terada originals, collaborations, and tracks by fellow Far East Recordings artist Shinichiro Yokota, all in the label's trademark melody-rich, evocative deep house style.

Review: German house label Running Back has featured the likes of Radio Slave and Boris Dlugosch in its schedules. Now its time for cult hero Philipp Lauer to join the party and he's marked the occasion with the Phlipper EP, possibly his most Italo disco-influenced release yet. Basically the whole record is the sound of summer holiday fun - the title track is breathy retro Eurotrance, (think the Rhythm Of The Night) all stonewashed synths and hands-in-the-open-night-air melodies. "Muscle" meanwhile is more your 80s Outrun-style arpeggio disco and "Lauer Vizzi" is pure late 80s Italo house joy think Rimini via the Hacienda.

Review: DJ Limited... Now there's a producer you'd be proud to take home to your parents. Strong, efficient but charming and funky; he's the hero we all need right now (but most of us don't deserve) "123" is one of the tunes that all DJs can drop, regardless of what ridiculous pigeonhole they've camped up in - steppy, minimal, left-of-centre, it's kinda reminiscent of Enei, Eastercolors & Noel's "Cracker" in the way it complements any type of mix and really stands out. "Baby" is more on the dancefloor side with its cute Q&A and soulful one-word vocal snippet. Think somewhere between Break and Voltage and you're in the right territory. Don't sleep.

Review: Dense & PIka cement their relationship with Drumcode with their third release on the label. "Suki" starts somewhat unexpectedly with the title track, a shimmering, chord-heavy groove, underpinned by dubby drums and a rumbling groove. It sounds slightly summery compared to most of the material that appears on Adam Beyer's imprint. By contrast, "Little Sun" is absolute beast of a track, underpinned by a churning, evil bass and relentless drums. However, the surprises don't end with the title track; "Lanky" is a big room roller, but the London duo uses mysterious strings, housey keys and a time stretched vocal to create a melancholic feeling.

Review: Salon Des Amateurs' Bufiman makes his Dekmantel debut with two left-of-centre, broken beat mind-melters. "Peace Moves" is a lo-fi, almost sludgy dive into a synth swamp where flurries of cosmic synth licks swoon and tease above your heard. "Graffiti Moves" takes an even trippier twist over a similarly low-and-slow drum arrangement but with added sparkling percussion. Throw in two cutlass-sharp versions of and you've got yourself a watertight declaration of peace. Absurdly on-point as always from Dekmantel.

Review: The mighty Maji takes the controls at his own Sweet Tooth imprint with four peaktime bumpers. Longstanding singer Jessica Luck features twice on the super-hooky "Pressure" and the creepier, sultrier "Dangerous". Elsewhere we have two straight-up slayers: the soaring samurai bass of "Back Up" and the glitch-tripped data spiked bass of "Guillotine". Massive.

Review: Fresh from an inspired EP on Beats of No Nation, Jad Lee returns to regular home Toy Tonics with another rock-solid, four-track salvo. The Aussie adventurer hits the ground running with "Strings That Never Win", a rolling deep house/disco house hybrid full of attractive orchestral samples, crunchy Clavinet lines and drowsy backing vocals. He brilliantly doffs a cap to vintage Italian dream house on the rather luscious and kaleidoscopic "Accidental Audi Driver", before wrapping a bustling, slack-tuned house groove with dewy-eyed melody lines and rubbery synth-bass on the deeper "Familiar Family Photo". Best of all, though, is loved-up, synth-heavy closer "Tops Off FM Radio", which sits somewhere between lucid Balearic deep house and soft-touch nu-disco.

Review: The second volume in Toy Tonics' occasional Jockey Jams series is something of a gift to DJs. Although naturally rooted in deep house, each of the showcased tracks offers something distinctively different. So, while Felipe Gordon's "Rinogal" is an funk-fuelled house bumper built around an elastic, acid-fired synth bassline and trippy late night effects, Metropolitan Soul Museum's "Saab" is a delicate, warm-up friendly fusion of lilting synths, bubbly electronics and the kind of twinkling pianos frequently found on vintage Italian dream house records. The eclecticism continues elsewhere, too, from the Adonis-via-Rimini thrills of Jacky Mingo's wonderfully positive "Brothers Cup", to the jazzy warmth of Black Loops and analogue house bleeps of Jad's "Overpriced Kaiser Chips".

Review: Bonafide fire from midlands murkers TC4. Commonly spotted unleashing under-the-counter versions that are so rude they'd make Frankie Boyle blush, here we find them hitting just as hard with their originals. Both stripped back explorations of the two-step technique with shades of techno and UK funky coded deep in the mix, "Savage" gets lewd with a wobbled-out bassline while "Chopper" bumps with a wounding dancehall rhythm style. Both absolutely kill it. Pay attention.

Review: Sicilian hi tech soul merchant Toto Chiavetta returns to the esteemed Innervisions imprint. Recently quite the stalwart of the Berlin based label, Chiavetta turns in an impressive effort on his second LP, described by label co-founder Kristian Beyer as "one of the best records we ever put out. The future of house music comes with a unique sound!" It's hard to disagree with him; the sheer quality of this release is evident the moment you put it on. Opening cut "Hand Made" is the kind of darkly futuristic mood lighting that you could imagine label co-head Dixon playing in one of his epic sets. "Analogue Suite" or "Survival" respectively delve further into late night dancefloor drama on these druggy and tunnelling strobe-lit affairs. There is light at the end of that tunnel though, rest assured; particularly on the uplifting and afro inflected "Nothing Really Matters" (which is more familiar of his usual work) or the trippy, intergalactic techno-soul of "Definitions".

Review: Glamour Mourgue' is a weird one, it's slow, creepy, with glimmers of heavy rock, but it's funky as hell. The 'Freudenthal' remix however speeds things up, and actually sounds more like an X-Files theme tune remix rather than a 'Glamor Mourge' remix although do we have the same earthy electric guitars as the original. The 'Modulaire' remix is still odd, it's a speedy version with the addition of off key organ tones. The 'Man 2.0' remix certainly catches the attention, with a continuous uncomfortable high pitch squeak, some fun echoing bongo and hints of animal noise

Review: Philou Louzolo has previously delivered a string of killer Afro-futurist releases, skillfully combining traditional polyrhythmic drum patterns and sampled instrumentation with the throbbing, club-ready electronics of analogue house. He's at it again on "Lumumba's Revenge", the opening track from this tribute to the mountainous region of Africa that straddles Senegal and Mali. Wiggly acid lines add psychedelic energy to an attractive, mind-altering Afro-house jam built around hot-stepping beats and lilting synthesizer solos. Elsewhere, he opts for a more traditional Malian feel on "Tartitt's Ansari (Philou Louzolo Edit)" - all ear-pleasing guitar motifs, layered handclaps and indigenous vocals - before reaching for the analogue electronics on trippy 4/4 stomper "Tartitt's Dibaba (Tribute Mix)". A more traditional version of the same cut (the "Beat Mix") is also included.

Review: Previously spotted on Night Bass compilations, Bijou makes his EP debut on the label with the dark and dank "G-Code", a firing quartet of big boy bass antics. The title track digs deep into our inner gangster with its pushed jacking groove and catchy sample, "1000 Bitches" lets the dogs out with a barking mad groaner that's laced with some really trippy FX and twisted trap vox, "Get Up" takes more of a house route that switches up with a classic breakbeat breakdown. Finally we hit the "Afterparty" where Bijou condones some seriously mischievous behaviour over a mean snake-like riddim. This hits the g-spot alright.

Review: In conjunction with the London based label celebrating its eighth birthday, Wolf Music return to the various artist format that sees them releasing forgotten gems and exclusive tracks from label mates. BRS' "Bouncing" was originally released back in 2000 on Sunshine Jones' Imperial Dub and is a firm favourite of the label for many years now. They see it as an opportunity to introduce it to a new generation of record buyers. Slovakia's Paradiso Rhythm self released "Greetings & Salutations" early in 2016 but Wolf have reissued it because it is, in their own words a 'killer record in every way.' Also of note: Ishmael & Medlar supply a collaboration recorded last year at the Red Bull studios and finally an updated version of KRL's "I Wanna Be With You" that was originally released on WOLFEP003.

Review: Moron and The Mister: a London b2b Bristol connection with more stripes than a tracksuit convention. Morongroove takes the lead with a block party busting disco strutter with vocals from the heart of the b-boy nucleus before Bristow joins the fray for a bass-slapping p-funk slapper. Deeper again Moron slinks so low to reveal a party under the stairs. And the party don't stop until the last scratch and synth squiggle of the premium bass-slapping, key-sprinkling "Where You At" echo out. Vibey.

Review: Having built his reputation via a string of dusty deep house EPs for Ondule Recordings, Hatelate is ready to unfurl his debut album. Predictably, it's something of a slow-burn delight, with the talented French producer supplementing his usual deep, dreamy, jazz-flecked and sample-heavy deep house workouts with a few pleasant surprises. These include the driving, funk-fuelled peak-time stomp of gritty bumper "Feeling Groove", the smoky slow jam "Introduction D'Acid Jazz", the superior, loopy disco-house thump of "Wanna Dance With Me" and the hybrid instrumental hip-hop/slow house head-nod of "Under Da Soul (Sunset Mix)". Of the numerous high-grade deep house workouts present, it's the epic, Chez Damier style "Chicago" that stands out.

The Sweetest Meditation (feat Mara TK - Julien Dyne remix) - (6:26) 114 BPM
from $2.03
Review: Lord Echo's recent full-length, Harmonies, was rightly proclaimed by critics to be an impressive piece of work: a glistening, dub-fuelled fusion of disco, jazz, reggae, soul and Afrobeat influences. Amongst the many highlights was "The Sweetest Meditation", a hook-up with Mara TK that Soundway Records recently described as "a high-rolling summertime opus". Here the track gets the remix treatment, with the Kiwi Lord's old pal Julien Dyrne at the controls. His interpretation is pleasingly loose, languid and toasty, with jazzy synth chords, rich dub disco bass and organic-sounding percussion catching the ear (alongside the original's superb vocal, of course). It's club-ready, of course, but also jazzy and fluid enough to excite those who prefer their beats to come with a healthy dose of swing.

Review: Black Cinderella is an all out vocal track, full of soul and emotion in each note. Sitting firmly on the reggae tip, with a low syncopated bassline, horns and dub sirens and backed by a shuffling jungle beat pattern. The Cinderella mix is simply the instrumental version of the former. The other three remixes that complete the EP fill different spaces in the spectrum. While the J-Man remix stays true to the original reggae, jungle roots, it dilutes them slightly adding a touch more dnb, which its choice of synths. The Margaman remix goes dark and techy thinning the soundscape leaving more space for echo's and drips. Kion and Jacky bring an authentic dub vibe to this track which we love, taking it right back showcasing the sub and the vocal, making it out favourite track of the EP.

Soul Rain (Paco Osuna remix) - (8:05) 125 BPM

Review: Colombian producer and DJ Pablo Cahn-Speyer arrived on the scene around 2010; seemingly out of nowhere yet made a big impression on the scene with his brand of latin infused tech house on Luciano's revered Cadenza imprint. Just like his initial presence, he then quickly disappeared into obscurity; possibly returning to his hometown Bogota after a brief spell in techno capital Berlin. But the great news is that he's back on Cadenza once again, after a four year hiatus: his last release was on New York City's Serkal in 2013. His new track "Soul Rain" is an epic and euphoric tech house anthem that's sure to case some serious heat on the dancefloor. This one builds in suspense gradually before the big drop comes. It's packed full of shimmering synths and soulful tones. The remix up next by Paco Osuna proves just why he is Barcelona's finest: a typically rolling and percussive DJ tool with The White Isle in mind.

Review: More from long serving German scalpel fiend Frico (AKA DJ Friction), a producer whose re-edits are consistently amongst the best around. This time he's in a slow and seductive kind of mood, serving up tasty rearrangements of simmering, hip-hop tempo boogie and '80s soul jams. First up is "What's On Your Mind", an evocative, eyes-closed love song smothered in impassioned vocals, darting horns and jazzy, George Benson style guitars and freestyle vocalizing. "I Don't Need Somebody Else" is a slightly more disco-fied affair, albeit a suitably smooth one. There are more headline-grabbing vocals, but also some stellar disco style orchestration and subtle solos aplenty. Smart work, Frico.

Review: The slow and dark singular piano strikes during the intro of 'Juce' sound like a scary and slow walk down to scene of a murder, except you're one of those goofy detectives in a grey trench coat with a giant magnifying glass, although all traces of comedy are quickly lost as the track gets very sinister very quickly with the middle section revealing a ruthless rusty grind. 'Struggle' has more of a wavey vibe, like a pounding heard of circus elephants passing through the jungle with snaps of quick tribal drums and weird and wonderful high pitched calls. 'Minerals' sees us call on our snake charming skills with an eerie flute present on top of the deep sub, witch dips and dives as deviously as a python pouncing on pray.

Review: Fred Peterkin's Black Jazz Consortium brings a refreshingly innovative take on deep house. With distinct jazzy influences, this album is full of complex rhythm structures, shifting instrumental components and hazy keys that display 11 unique and experimental productions on an album that is both captivating and accessible.

"Deep Love" opens the album in restrained fashion - or so it would seem. The high hats shift patterns constantly, adding an experimental feel to the slow tempo and soft beat. "New Horizon," by contrast is led by a prominent beat but still manages to trip away into airy moments courtesy of some big chords and crescendos. Like "Tribal Dance," a truly rhythmic track which has an almost jacking feel to it, "Levels" is an upbeat offering. It draws on the techno music of old, shaking the walls and floor with huge bass and big claps. "Teapot Science" takes in wobbling basslines and clicking percussion in a futuristic tech-house tinged number.

"Living the Dream" is a string-laden, dramatic piece of deep house, in the same way that "It Takes Two" uses low end bass and atmospherics to build feeling within the track. "Something Old" combines dark synths and a piano loop to hypnotic effect before "Watching You Vouge" washes the listener in jangling keys in a tune that probably fits the label of tech-jazz more than most.

Throughout Structure, Peterkin uses raw and basic sounds, but he arranges them in complex ways to create totally original and interesting tracks. The tracks compiled here complement each other very well, playing themselves off one another. However, at whatever point you drop into Structure, you will be greeted by deep house in its most experimental and underground form.

Review: Following the hugely successful launch last summer, Lenzman delivers another album-sized trove from his new brand The North Quarter. Once again he's in generous mode as eight tracks (including an intro skit and versions) flow like fine soul wine. From the silky dynamics of "In My Mind", where Manchester singer IAMDDB really flourishes with neo soul allure to the darker late night drive of the Jubei-featured "Park Hill" via the delicious smoky piano-lingering haze of the Steo-fronted "Tender Love", this is the sound of Lenzman in his element, relishing in his sound and vision at levels we've never seen before. The North Quarter is shaping up to be something really special.

Review: Quartet Series is back with the Bodybuilder Series after Scott Franka inaugurated the series in Spring. Here label boss Nachtbraker sourced some serious production talent from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. It's the Portamento Boys' first ever release, characterized by catchy melodies, quirky vibes and warm analogue grooves. First offering "Been There Come Back" is a neon-lit/ nu-disco journey to the stars that will appeal to fans of Smalltown Supersound. "Portamento 101" is described best by the label themselves. It "feels like you're playing the 1986 version of Outrun on your Sega." Finally, the slow burning groove of fittingly titled "Final Dinner" gets deep with spangling arpeggios, dusty classic drumcomputer beats and an unabashed nod in general to '80s Italo.

Review: It's the third edition of Cabin Pressure Recording's Shedits series, which means we're involved with Daytoner laying down some utter truth in the form of blissfully raw dance edits spanning everything from 60s soul to 90s trip hop. "Apache Street" features that mythical break in action amid some ludicrously addictive singing, while "Moonstomping" goes off on a little ska trip, "Feel It" provides us with a gorgeous example of UK 90s house at its most break-heavy, and "I Feel It Like That" is the sexy sister of the bunch, a seductive soul excursion tailor made for the lovers. Bliss.

Review: Yan Cook is the latest producer to join the ARTS label collective. Over a few short years, the Ukrainian producer has released two albums and a series of EPs for labels like Delsin, Planet Rhythm and EarToGround. Despite this hectic release schedule, this EP is fresh and challenging. "6th Avenue" combines Shako-style minimal bleeps with powerful kicks and firing percussion, while on "Gallop", he puts his focus on a stripped back rhythm track, with firing percussion, tearing bass and pounding kicks pushed into distorted levels. "Hidden Message" is a totally different proposition and sees Cook deliver a deeply hypnotic, tripped out techno groove, but it's only a temporary distraction and straight afterwards, he drops the tough, tracky "Tetra".

Review: Eleven slabs of pure, authentic roots, Rebel MC's foundational agenda-setters (penned under various names such as Blackstar, Rebel MC and Congo Natty) have been tethered and tied up to form this on-point history lesson in breakbeat and jungle culture. From the 'heads down' drum magic of the previously rare dubplate version of "Alaska Ride" to the instantly distinctive hook of The Revolutionaries-sampling "Kunta Kinte" via the Buju Banton-fronted siren session "Stamina", this album is a reminder of just how much Michael West contributed to jungle's development. Forefather fire!

Review: Involve is back supporting once again new talents in the techno scene. This time is turn for Turin based Exilles, who build techno around the polarity of light and darkness, consciousness and raving. A project born from the alchemy of two minds, they are united by a common desire to undermine, compose and recompose deep techno sounds with a mystical and enigmatic imagery. They strictly perform live, orchestrating ancestral ceremonies with analog machines and modular synthesizers. Their dark and hypnotic sounds chase the persistent in a synesthetic atmosphere. The droning and tunnelling techno of "Trasversale" calls to mind early Function or Giorgio Gigli and Obtane, the furious and cyclical grind of "Rapid Acid" calls to mind Gymnastics era Regis while "XY" gets a huge remix by fellow Italians Boston 168.

Review: Vital returns to Bournemouth bass HQ Unauthorised Audio with four supreme slicers. All tracks wholly focused on the bass riff, "Deadly Zone" cuts deep with rusty harmonic tones, "Heavyweight Sound" trims you down with a beautifully fat wobble on the bottom end, "Hot Of The Press" dices you to your bare bones with its blunt toxic bass while "Bruck It Up" carves you limb by limb with to the sound of a rubber ball bassline. Finally we have the stabber of the set: "Insane" where a freaky, ricochet bassline pings off the breaks and beneath a well-sculpted vocal sample. Cutty.

Review: If you're looking for an eclectic bunch of 4/4 floorfillers, this goodtime four-tracker from the mysterious Martin Ruppert camp should fit the bill. Check, for example, the heavy, relentless bass guitar loops, bouncy disco-house drums and cut-up vocal and orchestral samples driving Phonk D's party-starting "Gonzo", and the low-slung, psychedelic drug-chug that is Le Rebrique's hypnotic, filter-heavy "Keep The Flow". Elsewhere, Jacob Stoy and Le Rubrique join forces on the beach-warm, picturesque deep house flutter of "Cafe KOZ", while Dan Bay tiptoes the fine line between sub-heavy dub pressure and lo-fi deep house on the spaced-out goodness of "Kurdistan Dada".

from $2.03
Review: Finally, a chance for everyone to experience LSD safely and legally as D-Minus and friends take over Profound's first release of the year. Rather than a frolic in a field of strawberry fields, the title track is a little more intense with its bad trip bass blaring with horn-like menace. Deeper into the trip we flex as K-Motionz & Danger do the rusty robot on "Eyespy", Ironlung takes us all for the fools that we are, LBS twists up the styles with a neuro intro and jump-up drop on the battle-ready "Special Forces" and K-Motionz gets his angular grit on with "Orbital". There's no comedown from this.

Review: Flexing across his two more prominent aliases, Raff AKA Demon AKA Macabre Unit AKA Nurve b2b's himself hard in the kisser at the behest of professor Nomine. Three tunes a-side, his 140 dubstep-inspired Macabre Unit guise takes the lead with drama and dark humour; "Darth Vader" is a theatrical skanker, "Mash Up Da Place" is a woozy, toxic jam with a bassline that spirals into paranoia while "Man Up" gets all stiff upper-lip with its rising bass hook that flips between textures with a nervous twitch. Raff's slower, tech-inspired Nurve constructions complete the story with glacial glee... "Silentium" is a sparse, deep space twist on halftime and alien jungle, "Amazon" is a swampy triplet swinging riddim while "Best To Just Ride It" sends us packing off to space on a rocket of off-grid drums and raw man-eating bass. Immense.
