Review: With R&S well and truly back in the game, their ambient sub label Apollo is also enjoying something of a resurgence after the excellent EP from Synkro. Now bright young thing Jack Dixon is on the case with some shimmering deep house cuts that go that little bit further in living up to the name. Echoing synths and quietly shuffling beats typify the EP, while the prevalence of pitched and contorted vocal samples lends a mournful quality to all four tracks. With an immersive sound that has one foot firmly in the dub camp, the clean cut bliss out of the You Won't Let Me EP possesses the strength to soothe many a raging raver.

Review: Much like the discoid excellence of his Shutters release, the now classic "Use Me Again..." finds Tom Trago on his sampletastic best form, having an absolute riot with his use of Millie Jackson, full of tempo wobbles and filter-happy breakdowns. Carl Craig meanwhile does a very Detroit job of his brand new remix, putting a simple kick and hat combo over the top of the original and exaggerating Trago's crafty edits and FX for a similar but equally fun version. If you need something to inspire all manner of camp histrionics on the dancefloor, then reach for this bad boy and watch the party set alight.

Review: James Mason has never been the most celebrated of electro and boogie musicians. Possibly best known as part of Prelude-signed electro/hip-hop/synth-disco crew Wuf Ticket (makers of the brilliantly silly "Ya Mama"), Mason released just one solo album, 1977's disco era Rhythm of Life, before finding greater acclaim with his synthesizer/rap crew. Yet two of his productions, previously unreleased at the time of their creation, have recently gone on to become proto-house classics. According to Mason's sleeve notes on the belated 1996 release of "Nightgruv" and "I Want Your Love", he recorded them both in 1984 in a bid to secure a contract to make a new album. They were turned down and sat gathering dust for 12 years before finding a home on Mighty Fine Records (and later reissue specialists Soul Brother Records). Since then, both - and in particular, the better-known "I Want Your Love" - have earned a reputation amongst boogie, garage and disco-heads as two pioneering works. It's fitting, then, that Rush Hour have decided to give them another re-release - highly recommended.

Review: Since first finding fame as an integral member of the Def Jux crew in the late '90s/early 2000s, Blockhead - AKA NYC-based producer James Simon - has contributed three albums of heavyweight beat science to the vast Ninja Tune catalogue. This fourth full-length for Coldcut's long-running imprint sees him in fine form, offering a typically chunky selection of sample-heavy beatscapes. Musically, it's flexible, overlaying his usual solid beats with elements of folk-rock, grungy indie, jazz, blues, film soundtracks, country, B-music and dreamy pop. The resultant fusions are thoroughly enjoyable, offering a kaleidoscopic mix of pscyh-hop heaviness, hazy trip-hop revivalism and jaunty, floor-friendy rhythms.

Review: Amazingly, it's been eight long years since the release of Freerange's first Colour Series compilation ("Yellow"). A few things have changed in that time for Jimpster's label, but his commitment to musically rich deep house remains. That's much in evidence here, particularly on the contributions from Andre Lodemann, fast-rising starlet Mic Newman and Jimpster himself (whose woozy "Late Night Blues" is his best for some time). There's also a distinct old skool feel to some of the cuts, with Alexkid's percussive "Class of 95" and Milton Jackson's robust "DS1" offering plenty of vintage US house flavour. The real standout, though, is Arithmetic's' "Time", which sounds like a long lost deep house anthem.

Review: Having enjoyed the sort of 2011 that most producers dream of, hip Spaniard Maceo Plex returns to Crosstown Rebels with another two-track dose of touchy-feely nu school deep house. "Frisky" is typical of Plex's previous work, melding tactile synth bass, stirring strings and half sung, half-spoken vocals to a shuffling, nu-school house groove. It perhaps lacks the sheer power of previous releases, but there's a subtlety and sweetness that's addictive. "Sex Appeal" ditches the strings for bubbling acid lines, but otherwise the formula remains the same - shuffling, soft focus house music tailor-made for dewy-eyed moments of late night revelry.

Review: This newie from Baxta is a little different to previous Cheap Thrills releases. While the UK funky/garage/B-more/tropical fusions on offer do come loaded with heavy drums and gut-wrenching bass, there's also plenty of subtlety to the production and some choice melodies and ear pleasing sounds (see the title track and the touchy-feely breakdowns of "Skyline"). Recommended.

Review: Since setting their stall out in 2006, the Rebirth label has tried to reflect changing tastes, mixing up their releases accordingly. This expansive compilation showcases a selection of their disco-tinged releases and remixes, casually moving between dubbed-out nu-disco, revivalist fare and disco-leaning house. Review: A superb Bjorn Torske gets the remix treatment EP from Smalltown Supersound as Todd Terje, Harvey and Crimea X all tackle tracks from the Norwegian's 2010 album Kokning. No stranger to the art of the remix, Terje has been cutting his teeth of late with some killer original material (um "Inspector Norse" hello) but his remix of "Langt Fra Afrika" proves Toddney has lost none of his Midas touch in that department. Retaining the loose Afro groove of the short original, Terje extends the track tenfold, embellishing proceedings with a dizzying concoction of detuned drums, catchy horns, shuffling shakers, samba drums and crazy chants. Up next, Mr Bassett adds some requisite sleaze to "Nitten Nitti" whilst Italian duo Crimea X bring out the arpeggios for a ride to outer galactic discoteria on a brilliantly throbbing take of "Slitte Sko".

Review: Is Jus-Ed the hardest-working man in house? Certainly, he seems to be making a strong case. Following numerous mix CDs, singles and doublepack vinyl EPs in 2011, he begins 2012 with a typically impressive collection of soft-focus deep house with a rugged, floor-friendly edge. As ever, there's a high musical content (see the haunting acid bass and twinkling pianos of "Confused Passion"), alongside rougher cuts that explore the darker recesses of early morning deep house. Take, for example, the dreamy synths and ice-cold acid of "Trip To Hamburg" or liquid atmospherics of "Mr Pete's Cribby". Like the rest of Endurance, they're inspirationally melodic without losing dancefloor focus.

Of the six versions on show this time, the breakneck arpeggio of the A Copycat remix had us suitably hypnotised, while the slow-mo electrofunk of the Divide & Kreate version is worth checking for the impressive vocal tweakage alone!

Review: Em Vee's on-point Lumberjacks In Hell imprint reaches its fifth release with another three disco edits par excellence. This time around, it's the turn of Germany's Frico and British edit specialist Mannmademusic to supply the goods. Frico dominates with his fast-moving edit of Coffee's "Casanova", teasing out its vocal hook with an extended piano build-up. Mannmademusic offers two cuts; first up is "Circles", a guitar led stomper with loose percussion, which serves as the perfect contrast to the slow moving, symphonic disco strings and syrupy vocals of "Easy Lover". Another winner for what is surely one of the more discerning disco labels out there.

Review: Do not panic - Radiohead's "Creep" did not get harmed in the making of this deviously dark EP. In fact Brownz and Requake have proof that no Radiohead album was within a 10 mile vicinity of their mysterious Belgian beat lair. Anyway, who needs mournful rock music when you're pressing all of dubstep's best moody buttons? Three cuts are on offer here; the trio's sparse, stuttering original headlines the set with sharp production prowess while Brownz's own "They Don't Sleep" acts as a fine alternative for earlier, mood-setting slots or deeper mixes. Requake ensures the final chapter in this sonic saga is littered with interesting rhythms and intricate bass layers aplenty thanks to his remix of "They Don't Sleep".
