Review: If anyone can fuse Q-Tip, Busta and Sister Sledge, it's the Disco Cakes head honchos Defkline and Red Polo. In fact their baking is so sweet they've cooked up two versions; a funk-fuelled disco jam and a swaggering, breakbeat-heavy hip-hop version. Naturally both cuts are so tasty your dancefloor will be munching out of the palm of your hand. Further on we're punched with a bass-battered nu-funk version of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock N Roll" and sweet-talked by the sexy dancehall version of early 90s hip-hop crew K7 on "Come Baby Come". Yummy.

Weekend Lover (Luvless remix) - (6:31) 115 BPM
from $1.49
Review: After successfully releasing the debut of EGYPTIAN NIPPLES (duo act formed by Massimiliano Pagliara and Jules Etienne) with the 5 track EP "BACK BUT HALF" Apersonal Music now reveals the remix pack for the mini-album, commissioning 4 experienced producers seeking to maintain the high quality and old school vibe of the original tracks. German producer Lauer maintains the old school US vibe of "Back But Half", while Jay Shepheard gives a clubby dancefloor twist to the electro gem "Bottle Of Mine". Session Victim (Retreat / Delusions Of Grandeur) wisely understood the coastal vibe of the original EP (and album cover) by remixing "L.A. Melody" towards a Caribbean taste with a Berlin vibe. Last but not least, Luvless (Rose Records / Razor N Tape) takes "Weekend Lover" and transformes it into a dreamy sound blaster for that special moment in your DJ set. Someone said after party?

from $1.49
Review: It's been a swift rise for Lars Dales & Maarten Smeets, the Amsterdam-based pair known as Detroit Swindle, since they first appeared together across a clutch of 12"s in 2012. Though Detroit Swindle have graced Tsuba, Heist, Freerange and Murmur over this period, it's Dirt Crew Recordings they are most closely associated with so it makes perfect sense for Dales and Smeets to issue their debut LP on the German label. Boxed Out features some thirteen tracks and features guest spots from Mayer Hawthorne and Sandra Amarie. The horizontal beatdown of "You, Me, Here, Now" and Quantic sampling "Thoughts Of She" are highlights.

DJ Feva - "I Shot Big L" - (5:23) 144 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Dirty Dubster's popular Ragga Party Jams series continues, with another quartet of dubwise mash-ups and reggae/hip-hop futures. Larry SKG kicks things off with "Hypocrites", an expertly crafted fusion of a classic soulful reggae riddim and well-chosen hip-hop samples. DJ Maars' "Just Like Music" blends a familiar rap vocal and sunshine reggae jam with vocal cuts from a classic Marvin Gaye slow jam, while DJ Rebel's "Here Comes The Mashupper" layers a skanking riddim with all manner of familiar vocal samples. Best of all, though, is "I Shot Big L", in which Bob Marley takes a trip into scratchy reggae hip-hop territory. It shouldn't work, but it's sympathetically produced and sounds like a sunshine anthem in the making.

Review: Drum & bass's most unique gentleman Calibre plunders his vaults to compile a new collection of unreleased gems through the ages. As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

St Sinclair - (3:51) 122 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Martyn's 3024 label returns with an extensive collection of works from rising UK house man Leon Vynehall. Originally debuting on Well Rounded Records' Housing Project sub-label back in 2012 with the Mauve EP, Vynehall has since become one of the UK's most in-demand of the new wave of young house producers, releasing subsequent records for George Fitzgerald's ManMakeMusic and Will Saul's Aus as well as collaborating with blog house survivor A1 Bassline under the Laszlo Dancehall alias. Having debuted on 3024 with last year's Open platter, Vynehall is back with Music For The Uninvited, a seven-track collection of tracks supposedly inspired by rides to school in his mother's car as a child in which he would listen to "mixed hip-hop, funk & electro tapes, Janet Jackson albums, Style Council and Stiff Little Fingers". Whilst there is plenty of the individual house sound Vynehall has developed on offer here ("It's Just (House Of Dupree)" is a certified jam) there are also more tranquil moments to bask in such as "Inside The Deku Tree" and "St Sinclair" which bookend this excellent release.

Gully Halves - (4:08) 170 BPM
from $1.39
Review: Alix Perez on Exit? That's enough to make most D&B aficionados froth at the mouth. Throw in collabs with the equally hot Stray and two of footwork's most demonstrative players and you've got a release so cool it comes with its own beard. "U" is a rifle-like jitter-jam of cuts and chops, all massages together to juke glue. "Sludge", meanwhile, lives up to its name in every way. A funky post-dubstep downbeat strutter, it wonks as hard as it works. The truly unique "Make It Worth", meanwhile, is an eerie stepper that morphs from subtle to stately drama with a Detroit style heaviness and a grime vocal loop. Finally we hit "Gully Halves" which, as the title suggests, is a waspy paranoid bassline on a dark stroppy halfstep. Four incredible future jams from the Shogun superstar... This is next level business.

Review: Chopshop boss DJ Butcher has never been afraid to share the wealth and this latest is release is no different, featuring four different producers with four different tunes. Butcher bravely steps up with the Eminem-meets-70s soul "Slim Shaddy", Ill Advised goes loop-crazy for the celestial funk joy of "Love Is What We Need" and Voodoo Whiskey goes for the bass twang jugular with "Suck My Sausage". Finally the curtain closes with the tight and sophisticated disco-funk inferno that is "Drama Queen". Hot stuff!

Review: Here's the pitch: ask six of Chicago's finest exponents of bumping house and pitched down disco cuts to contribute some of their finest works, blend them all together and present in the appropriate space of a bumper digital EP. What's the end product? The rather hot looking Chicago Service from the Amsterdam label Lumberjacks in Hell which features a merry cast of the city's finest in Gene Hunt, Rahaan, Jamie 3:26, Cratebug, Hugo H and Boogie Nite across seven tracks.

Review: Skimming the purist, fullest fat cream from the nu-funk crop, Scour's behaviour at the forefront of the party-minded movement is nothing short of commendable. Their most extensive compendium to date, vibes range of the Little Walter-sampling "Ain't No Coolin" to the filtered jazz funk chops and slaps of "The Program". Between these two disparate-yet-wholly-consistent flavours you'll find subverted swing (Father Funk & Howla's "Got Swing?"), stark Jackson Five string struts ("Soul Rocka") and classic rap ("Two For The Crates"). Whipped and unashamedly fresh, Scour really are the cream of the crop right now.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

Review: Every now and then we get a faint signal from this Beaten Space Probe, lost in the depths of the nebulous disco cosmos. It usually crackles through on our radio about once a year and is unanimously greeted with whoops of delight and much dancing on our analogue space consoles. This missive contains nine galaxian edits, presumably all peak time bangers on the hottest alien dancefloors. Highlights include the elasticated bass frenzy of "Double Lines", the Kool & The Gang redux "Don't Wanna Dance" and Fingerman's electro-boogie blaster, "Like 2 Baby". Far out!

Review: There are so many huge names on this release's line-up that we doubt there's enough pixel juice to spell them out. But we'll give it a go. From Congo Natty and Stevie Hyper D's slamming opening track this compilation is on a winning streak. Blazing through tracks from Aries & Papa G, LionDub, Jaydan, Heist and Slipmatt, Savage Rehab, Triptonite and Kenny Ken, there are no fewer than 23 massive tunes here and all of them are junglistic mashups of the highest order. Roll up, roll up!

Review: Part of the V Recordings family, Chronic is Bryan Gee's baby. Established in 1996, the label has stayed true to its roots by releasing only the finest in roof-raising, booty shaking soulful floor-fillers. Jaybee and Andy Sim get to it on "Forgotten Funk" which harks back to the glory days of funk-fuelled D&B. They haven't forgotten. "Don't Front" sees Dave Owen joining Jaybee for a laid back roll through fast-moving soundscapes with a deadly bassline worth a severe snarl - just wait until it drops. "Jugging Sound" changes things up totally with stressy pads and a bigger attitude than Arnie, and finally "Check This Out" steps it out like a cocky young thing, staring out inferior basslines from a mile away. An EP full of surprises, get on it.

Review: Paper Recordings' reputation precedes them in house circles. Now however, they've bitten the bullet and dived into the deep end of the disco pool with this compilation (on sub label Paper Disco) of current nu-disco producers and edit heroes. It's a brave comp that tackles every interpretation of disco, including 2 Billion Beats' deep '80s synth groover "See Us Through", Richard Seabourne's bizarre funk-goes-doomy 303 workout "This Is Acid" and Mezman's bass heavy, dream-pad odyssey. We're looking forward to plenty more disco thrills from this new stable!

Review: With just one other record consigned to the project it's not often we witness label boss Jimpster turning his hand to his discofied alias on Delusions Of Grandeur. Any keen followers of the label will be more than satisfied with the vibe on offer, as a slower kind of house groove takes hold for three tracks infused with spiritual sampling, starting with the wistful, soulful tones of "Painted Lady". "Lumpsucker" has a stronger electronic vein running through its core, matching Chicago drums and snaking arpeggios with washes of chords to keep the mood mellow, before "Camberwell Beauty" scrubs out the edges and drifts deep down into a sumptuous pillow of laconic house.

Bang! (Beau Wanzer adjustment) - (5:16) 123 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Released last November, Illumination was just the debut EP we could have hoped for from veteran DJ Erol Alkan; straddling the line between touchy-feely piano house, pounding acid and oddball breakbeat, it was as honest encapsulation of the man's idiosyncratic approach as you could expect. It's something that follows on to this collection of remixers, which gives a diverse selection of producers a crack at creating something new from Alkan's orginals. Rush Hour's Tom Trago turns in the most conventional remix, and deeper version of the '90s-influenced "A Hold On Love", while The Emperor Machine adds some expectedly trippy dub effects to "Bang!". U's version of "Check Out Your Mind" is even more twisted than the chopped up original, but for us it's L.I.E.S. and Nation affiliate Beau Wanzer's take on "Bang!" that stands out, removing all the sharp edges and turning it into an effective techno bludgeoning tool that will shake sweaty basements apart.

Played by: Warson
Review: Polish producer Warson has been providing funk-minded breakbeat heads with formidable dancefloor fare since 2011. Here, he pops up on his own Tru Funk imprint with another trio of tried-and-tested floorfillers. "Louder" kicks things off in style, lacing cut-up horns, funk vocal samples and bubbling electronics over a bass-heavy midtempo breakbeat-funk groove. "Love Theme" ups the tempo, basing the action around a classic loose-but-tight breakbeat rhythm. Musically, it has a richer and more expansive feel, with bouncy pianos, sharp strings and fluid funk guitars perfectly accompanying the two prominent vocal samples. He really lets loose on "Happy Song", a jump-up drum and bass roller built around samples from a heavyweight '70s funk rock jam.

Review: With early support from Greg Wilson, Fingerman and Yam Who? it's a pretty good bet that this new EP from Surrey's The Twisted Soul Collective is going places. "Holy Hustler" kicks thing off with a slow deep disco throb before introducing some retro hip-house samples. Things go up a gear with the golden voiced euphoria of Dusty Springfield on "Dusty Love", before we are drawn into hypnotic Latin groove of the sax brandishing "BB Man". Things wrap up with a nightcap in the form of frisky cocktail house number "Magic Chant".

WBBL - "Around U" - (4:39) Biggest-selling track on this release

Review: Fresh-faced nu-funk crew Rise Above call in some big names for their debut quadlet of bass-bitten buzz cuts. Tonic takes the Beasties and drags them into a post apocalyptic future where ugly basslines reign supreme. Howla switches and slams with a series of tightly edited horns and a blisteringly heavy groove. JFB, meanwhile, lays down a bed of rusty bass, sharp breakbeats and an array of cool scratches before dropping into Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower". Last but definitely not least, WBBL finalises this big debut release deal with a show-stopping disco twist on Mariah Carey. Launch releases don't come any bigger than this.

Feeling Good (Classic Love Deep mix) - (6:56) 120 BPM Biggest-selling track on this release
from $1.49
Review: Edit fiends Basic Fingers usually reserve their tastiest material for the occasionally used Gold Finger offshoot. That's arguably the case here, as Deejaykul delivers a sumptuously deep and soulful house interpretation of the much-played "Feeling Good" (think Nina Simone, though this version has a delicious male vocal). The A-side DeejayKul meets Soultechnic Deepa mix is particularly potent, with intricate Latin percussion, smooth pads and sensual vocal riding an effortlessly sunny groove. There's a bit more vintage US garage on the other track, where the Classic Love Deep mix laces soft-focus chords and classic organs over a typically skippy groove. Impeccable stuff, all told.

Highlights include the chugging electro dub sing-along "Shakka Boom" by DJ Clairvo, the p-funk meets disco of vibes of "Miami Freaks" by Lee Zamah and Timewrap's pumped up version of The Velvettes's perennial Motown classic, "He Was Really Sayin' Something".

Review: Having made his Aus debut last year, restless producer Tom Demac makes his return to Will Saul's ever-dependable stable of talent with Linda's Theme. The title track is a raucous combination of raw, off-kilter drums and resonant 303 bass in the Gerry Read mould, characterised by its bold sample which sounds like it was ripped from a lost psychedelic 7" from the 1960s. "Vocoder's Revenge" is a little more what we'd expect from the producer, combining deep, sleazy sub bass and the titular vocoder which sounds like a codeine addled Daft Punk, while "Days with Poly" starts out as a stern tech house bumper before travelling into more emotive territory thanks to its soulful female vocal and warm pads. For peak time house fare, you'll find little better this month, that's for sure.

Review: Parisian DJ Moar seems to be enjoying his recent solo forays so much that it's amazing that he still finds time to release stuff with his band Venice Beach too (but somehow he does). Here he presents four more sweaty, slap-bassy, late night pelvis grinders, the most of obvious of which "Disco Jazzers Delight" takes the overly familiar ("Rappers' Delight") and rearranges it into something completely fresh and new. Elsewhere the source material is less obvious but equally as good and funky with the clean, tight and linear '80s soul grooves of the title track, "Funky Execution" being a real highlight.

Review: There's something pleasing about the no-nonsense approach of the Killer Funk Disco crew. Their edits cut straight to the chase, chopping, looping and tweaking the key passages - percussive breaks, grooves and choruses, mainly - of their excellent source material. They're in fine form on this fifth volume in the series, which originally dropped on vinyl a few years back. Variously you'll find a perfectly pitched re-cut of a classic dubwise cover of "Staying Alive" ("Sly & Robbie Disco"), horn-totin', hands-in-the-air disco-funk ("Rescue The Edit"), string-laden low-slung disco ("Is That A Firecracker In Your Pocket Harvey...") and a slap-bass sporting disco singalong ("Mmm, Tiger..."). All killer, no filler.

Review: Stafford-based producer Dave Gerrard specializes in creating cut-and-paste tracks that blend the best elements of familiar disco, funk, boogie and hip-hop jams. What really marks him out, though, is the classy way that he does it. Check out the way he shifts between basslines, grooves and samples on the boogie-tinged house jam "What We Gonna Do Here" (inspired, if that's the word, by Midnight Express's "Danger Zone") or the way he breathes new life into the Average White Band on the thrilling "Drop The Pieces". There's also a riotous tribute to the giants of P-Funk on "Rip The Funk", arguably the EP's strongest moment.

Review: Mysterious SoundCloud sensation Dr Packer returns with the follow-up to his popular Surgery Edits EP. His style - taking classic and little known disco, boogie and '80s soul jams and giving them a smooth, dubby deep house makeover - is undeniably attractive, and sympathetic enough to the original material to get the crate-diggers onside. There's plenty to excite among the six tracks showcased here, from the synth-bass laden sweetness of "Gimme Your Loving" and deep, soulful disco-house outing "2 The Bank", to the slap bass-boasting headiness of "Snap Shot" - all delay-laden vocal hits and hazy guitar solos - and wide-eyed disco release of "Running", whose source material should be familiar to all but the most inexperienced disco DJs.

Either which way, the re-edits here are cool. There are four bangers to choose from - all party funk with added 'I swear I know this' raps, all beefed up and filtered into next week. Guaranteed to leave the dancefloor dribbling, drooling and thoroughly loving it.

Review: Grab those dearest to you and nail down anything of value because Critical's latest release is epic on a grand scale and it's going to blow everything away. We're talking nuclear, apocalyptic style. Forget Noah and his sailing trip. There's a lot of joy in hearing these two producers work together - two similar twisted styles interlocking seemingly effortlessly, creating havok at the touch of a button. It's like magic. Dark, weighty and intense, at times it feels like they're going right over the edge...but they always manage to pull it back for another drop. Soon to be heard in clubs everywhere to the tune of thousands of contorted bodies moving in unison, there's always one release a year you'll kick yourself for sleeping on. Don't let it be this one.

Review: The eighth release on Sccucci Manucci sees the imprint pack a hefty eight productions that traverse various house sounds from around the world onto two slabs of handstamped wax. From Coeo's bouncy and vocal track through to Mella Dee's dark and distinctively UK-centric track the label has tried to explore the sheer wealth of production talent on offer at the moment.

Review: Swiss beatmaker Pulsaar gets deep and emotional with his brand new EP on Jazzsticks. Who said D&B couldn't be romantic? Full of soulful rhythms, jazz flute and jazzier sax and deep basslines made to get booties shaking across the land, this is a dancefloor-perfect release made to get crowds feelin' the love. Featuring the amazing Paul SG on the cool and breezy "City Trip", every other track on the release is self-made solo work taken from the jazziest, most soulful recesses of Pulsaar's imagination. "Misunderstandings" finishes off on a gorgeously old-school note. You can't afford to miss this, get it bought.

Review: Fledgling label Funk Fusion have quickly hit the ground running - pushing their nu-funk agenda with joyous abandon. From the Sesame Street vibes of their promo pic, it's clear from the start that this label is all about having fun and their latest mash-up compilation "Fused Funk Vol 02" delivers it big time. There's 12 tough party tracks packed on here including the electro-hip-house of "Get Your Boogie On", the bleepy jump-up funk of "Hold On, I'm Comin" and the smooth retro closer "Danceflaw".

Review: Australian funk wizard D-Funk returns to Grits n Gravy with three new floor monsters and a luscious remix. This guy knows how to get the groove on and "Save Me" is one of those tunes that'll send your panties in a twist from the first bar. Title track, "Kick This Thing" is a certified boogie tool, whilst The Owl's remix goes into deeper mode and brings out the percussion further. "Never Knew" is just the cherry on top of the cake - beats, bass and funk.

Review: For their latest statement of intent, Bristol's nu-funk troubadours The Allergies have found a new home at Goodgroove. They've consummated the relationship in fine style too, going a whopping four times in the process. "Special People" is a roaring breaky funker that could easily be mid-70s O'Jays. Elsewhere we get daisy age hip hop jam "React", vintage Stax-style stomper "As We Do Our Thing" and guitar-led rap "Feel Alright". We're glad they're back!

After Party People - (5:23) 120 BPM

Review: Ever since JD Twitch rebooted Optimo Music, it's been the irregular transmissions from Glasgow act Golden Teacher that has hit the spot each and every time. The amalgamation of two diverse bands from the city -noise punk outfit Ultimate Thrush and analogue house duo Silk Cut, Golden Teacher first emerged on Optimo Music early last year with a pretty apt description of sounding like "Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L jamming with Bobby O, K Alexi Shelby, Liaisons Dangereuses and Imagination, with some voodoo drummers and Sly & Robbie". Steadily building up a reputation for some riotous live performances, Golden Teacher are a class above because they manage to distill this energy into their recorded output too. Party People features three such examples, with A-side cut "Love" the kind of production that sufferers of LCD Soundsystem withdrawal will embrace and cherish for years to come.

Review: Having met at school, sharing a passion for music and skating, Florian Vietz and Andreas Hopfl met at high school, the Coeo duo's name supposedly comes from a health and safety warning adorning the side of a coffee cup, which read "Contents Hot". It's something shared in this simmering collection of raw house tracks, with "Do It" starting hard and staying hard, and "Will I" features beautifully crafted vocals and an almost percussive arpeggio lead which sits mellifluously on floating pads and raw piano chords. Remixes come courtesy of Steve Huerta and Vorres, who add their resective dubby and gospel-esque approaches to the source material.

Review: Originally released in 1999, Stanton Warriors' remix of Zac Toms' "Bring Me Down" was one of the West Country duo's earliest outings. Springing and vibing with turn-of-the-century UKG class, the original represents the act's roots with groove and distinction and still sounds amazing to this day. Rebooted 15 years later, it's still as fresh and funky. Highlights across this generous package include the jazzy keys on Odysseus's Dark House remix, the deep, dubby Serious Danger-style chugging vibe of Origin's remix and of course the swaggering chest-press breakbeats of the 2014 mix. Make no mistakes; this will never bring you down.

Review: Royal T and Flava D step out with their first collaborative outing. An outing that's been so fruitful, it's spawned three different versions. Rub one is all about the classic 4/4 UKG vibes as the beats slap and tickle beneath a series of jazzy organ hits. The much darker, ruder rub two flexes back to the turn of the century when grime, breaks and garage were enjoying one of the finest three-ways UK music has ever experienced. Finally we hit rub three, all foaty, skippy and dreamy, it's a two-step journey into the most luxuriant of dancefloor pastures. What a collaboration, we've got Royal T and Flava D on our minds in a major way!

Review: Vienna-based D&B outfit Fourward aren't about to sit back and let their good name carry itself through the ranks. Releasing on Shogun Audio this high-octane mix of neuro and hard stepping floor fillers takes the group to the next level, pushing their influences from Noisia and Ed Rush & Optical to Icicle and Alix Perez through each finely tuned track. From the dark lyrics of "Countdown" featuring Kyza on vocals to the neurofunk masterpiece that is "Phase Align", this is a bad little EP that blows up first, asks questions later. Get your crash helmets ready.

Review: E Versions is a brand new edit-focused offshoot of Merc, seemingly allowing label boss Mark E an outlet for some of his unreleased reworks. Given the title, the spotters out there might easily guess what the source material for "Kahn" is, and it immediately calls to mind all those great reworks the Midlands-based producer did for Jiscomusic, Running Back and Golf Channel in the pre-disco edit flood era. It's complemented by "Mingo" which is much more indicative of the brand of hypnotic machine music Mark E is currently specialising in, and will appeal to fans of drums!!!
