Free Your Mind (feat Singing Fats - dub version) - (3:30) 170 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Break's third album Simpler Times is rapidly en route. And here's another sampler to stop us all from getting on a train to Bristol and camping outside his house until the full deal is released. "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush reggae feel, very much like his "Love So True" anthem a few years back. Complete with the unfailing dulcets of Fats, it's totally spotless and highly soulful. Looking for some new dirty? Look no further; "Brand New" is another textbook slab from Break's darker pantry; a waspy bassline, interesting rhythm sounds and a groove so thick and deep you could stash an elephant in it... No one does D&B quite like Break.

Review: Oh boy.. Three of modern bass music's finest players collide for the first in a series of collaborative long players on Deep Medi. The results - as you'd expect just reading the line-up - speak for themselves. Every artist's signatures is coded deep into the collection; Kahn's unpredictability and robustness, Commodo's grit and funk and Gantz often unfathomable depths and eastern twangs are all present as we wriggle and writhe to the detuned harmonies of "Crystal Collect", get twisted on the tripped out drum dynamic of "Kibosh" and lose ourselves in the spacious jazz-minded drums of "Unmistakeable". Truly unique.

Who Do You Think You Are - (4:36) 100 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Another week, another new set of high grade re-edits from the Midnight Riot label. This time round, label boss Yam Who hands a debut to Stafford-based Dave Gerrard and Rob Bairstow's Greyskooledits project. Predictably, they head straight for peaktime dancefloors with opener "Saving My Love In", a brilliantly cut-up, hustlin' rework of a well-known disco classic. They dip the tempo a little on "Hesitate", impeccably stretching out and tweaking Salsoul Orchestra's "Runaway" for modern dancefloors. Even better is "Definite Strangeness", a brilliantly dubbed-out, beatbox electro tweak of Barbara Mason's "Another Man", while "Who Do You Think You Are" sees the duo brilliantly chop-up funk classic "Mr Big Stuff" in a vintage hip-hop breaks style.

Review: Valique once more dons his popular V's Edits guise for another trip into Balearic rework territory. This 18th installment in the long-running series has a "neo-blues" theme, offering the former funk breaks man a chance to deliver suitably dancefloor-friendly interpretations of cuts by Muddy Waters, BB King, The Doors and Rodriguez (a tasty re-arrangement of the 'Sugar Man's "Can't Get Away"). Interestingly, he also turns Dire Straits' radio-friendly, solo-heavy "Sultans of Swing" into a loose, tech-influenced house jam. Elsewhere, look out for a house-goes-breaks-goes-Balearic take on "Horse With No Name" (here titled "Has The Name"), and the bluesy powder house flex of "Daymallah".

Review: It's time to raise a glass of something cold, fizzy and boozy to the long-running G.A.M.M imprint, which celebrates a century of releases with a trio of new disco-era Michael Jackson reworks from regular contributors Moplen and The Reflex. As usual, The Reflex hits the spot, playing around with the original parts to deliver a punchy, floor-friendly extension of Off The Wall cut "Burn This Disco Out" that sounds like some mythical, long lost Tom Moulton remix. Moplen weighs in with two versions of Jacksons' banger "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)"; a DJ-friendly effort that begins with easily mixable grooves, and a superior, mostly instrumental 'Remix' that builds up masterfully via a sumptuous, orchestral intro.

Just Like You (The Funk District remix) - (6:47) 102 BPM Biggest-selling track on this release
from $1.49
Review: Following hot on the heels from outings on 1978 Music Co, Logical and La Talacha, Lemon Mint transfers to Hotbox Recordings for his latest trip into hazy, disco-sampling deep house territory. He smartly explores different moods and tempos across the six original tracks, from the paring horns, woozy loops and head-nodding bump of opener "Just Like You", to the beachside bump and glistening guitars of "Maximino", the EP's most up-tempo moment. Highlights are pleasingly plentiful, with the '80s house-goes-Latin bliss of "Esmerelda" standing out. There's also a tasty bonus in the shape of a Funk District remix of "Just Like You", which somehow manages to make the groovy original even sunnier.

Review: While he'd been building a reputation for a few years already, it was 2009's In The End (I Want You To Cry) EP for Running Back that first thrust Marco 'Tensnake' Niemerski towards the spotlight. Some six years on, Gerd Janson has decided to put together an expansive new package of remixes. There's plenty to enjoy, from Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco's breezy, guitar-laden boogie rework of "Holdin' Back (My Love") and Prins Thomas's dense-but-wonky, Scandolearic disco revision of the same cut, to the bright-and-breezy, rush-inducing melodiousness of Lone's sublime rework of "In The End (I Want You To Cry)". Tiger & Woods' remix of "Holding Back (My Love)" - all relentless build followed by thrilling boogie-meets-house release - is also pretty darn special.

Review: Kompakt's annual label sampler returns for a 15th year, gathering together another 24 highlights from the long running Cologne imprint's ever growing back catalogue. As usual, there are numerous styles represented - from the spiraling dancefloor synth-pop of Kolsch and punk-influenced techno of Audion, to the soft focus melodies and hypnotic beats of Gui Boratto, and the intoxicating global electronics of Jurgen Paap - as well as much-played tracks from some of the imprint's most notable talents (see the contributions from Rex The Dog, Superpitcher, Matias Aguayo and John Tejada, whose "Two O One" is a tuneful techno delight).

Review: There's no denying Funk Fusion definitely live up to their name; take these first two tracks which sample and flip Kool & The Gang and Tribe Called Quest numbers into something new and different for 2015. There's also a cheeky garage remake of Basement Jaxx, and for something slower check out the hip hop throw down of Aretha Franklin's "Say A little Prayer For You" by KMT. And have you heard Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" pitched against Sean Paul lyrics? Well you have now. Something for everyone.

Review: Not content with presenting us with the action-packed Gold Grooves compilation, the ever-generous Editorial are back with another meaty compilation. There are five new cuts to get to grips with here - Matt Hughes's luxurious tight-funk bass anthem "Solar Boogie", the lazy, lapping ocean beach disco of "Any Damn Time" by Danny Deluxe and the chuggin locomotive rhythms of I Gemin's "How Could It". Elsewhere Jay Airiness brings some Italo-space disco to the table with "Sunshine Grooves and "Public Transit" is slick cocktail-house at its finest.

Review: Veteran Italian DJ/producer Kiu D has enjoyed an eclectic career, producing D&B, nu-jazz, house and dubstep before turning to funk and disco re-edits. Here, he delivers more of the latter for Hotbox Boogie, building on the success of previous releases for Masterworks Music and Special Edition. He kicks things off with "Looking Good", a sparkling chunk of straightened out '70s funk madness, before the World of boogie-era proto house on "Don't Mind" and "Splendid Idea" (the latter boasting delicious jazz guitar and vibraphone solos). Elsewhere, check the rolling disco-funk warmth of "Bad Idea" and the bass-heavy romp of Groovemarket hook-up "House Party".

Review: We always look forward to a new installment in the School Yard Breaks series, and with 25 more vintage gems on here, they haven't let us down. It's the same drill - obscure original tunes that provided famous samples - but with new thrills. Highlights include Bobby Byrd's raunchy groover "I Need Help I Can't Do It Alone" (best known for its "I know you got soul!" line), the '70s cop show grit of "E Colition Alpha" and Rabbit & Carrott's classic "Express Yourself" (famously reworked by N.W.A.).

Review: Dawn Wall's identity remains a really well-kept secret. To the point we don't even know if it's a solo or duo act. All we know is that there's at least one chap (due to a hairy legged picture on social media) and, much more importantly, is that he/they/it makes ridiculously sick beats. Ranging from the deliciously deep and soulful ("Kythera") to Need For Mirrors style bass brutality ("Angel Field") via unfettered, hooky euphoria ("Seeds Of Change"), this EP does exceedingly well to upkeep the guessing and mystery while providing some genuinely impressive and well textured drum & bass. Winningly, there's a whole album of this to come soon, too!

Review: Long standing compadres Wickaman and Maverick show us how bootlegs are done properly... The Propellerheads' Shirley Bassey sampling "History Repeating" gets a sharp, muscular rusty drum flavour on "Beat Goes On" while "Strictly Roots" takes Althea & Donna's 1978 pop-reggae bubbler "Uptown Top Ranking" and gives it a pristine turbo flex. Sunshine skankers unite.

Review: Ever the bastion of modern drum & bass from the smooth and liquid to the rough and ready, Hospital have decided to take stock with a bumper pack of classics, some of which have been remastered for the occasion. Logistics spells it out by kicking things off with the hyped up energy of "Jungle Music", while Danny Byrd brings a cosmic effervescence with "Amen Alley". All the label regulars are here with some bona fide gems from the vaults, whether it be London Elektricity or High Contrast on the buttons. Whatever the case, for newcomers to the label or those needing a refresher, this is a perfect one-stop hit of uptempo breakbeat mayhem from a British institution.

Review: Bristol's Futureboogie return with some sure fire nu-disco grooves to get any party started. London's Jay Shepheard is on board with "Henry's Theme" sporting an early nineties house vibe. Next up is PBR Streetgang from Leeds doing their thing with a nice journey via a progressive house sound on "Suel Baril". There's also local Bristolian Lukas doing more of his low slung slo mo disco business and Phil Gerus with "Never Coming Back".

Review: Throughout his musical career, the unpredictable Karma has spread his tracks across different genres, and from drum and bass to house and dubstep, he's been capable of reinventing himself on a regular basis. For this latest Innamind Recordings episode, the producer is in half-step mode, channeling his fury behind the mixing board into the deep and subby bounces of "Heal", before moving onto darker and more pulsating territories on the excellent "Rumble Fish" - surely this week's no.1 dubstep cut. "Flee In The Fog" features Dubtro, and the dup conjure a foreboding picture with their mild pads, watery beats and lo-fi sonics. Excellent stuff.

Review: Not just one of drum & bass's most iconic female vocalists, but also one of the most respected... Riya's work behind the scenes goes back around 15 years. As a result she's got serious reference points, a genuine understanding of proper drum & bass and a really impressive debut album that features some of the best names in D&B. Ranging from the sci-fi soars and twinkling synths of "Misunderstanding" to the out-and-out gutter slaps of "Piece Of Me" via the soul jazz jungle lushness of "Don't You Know" and the already massive lighter-raiser "As Soon As". Released at a time when a lot of female features are popping up in D&B for all the wrong reasons, Riya is the real deal... And so is this album.

Review: As Eli Escobar let's it be known in "The Formula" that he's 'got something for you' as the sweet chorale chimes. There's a subtle Osunlade vibe to this album, the American's first, and Rhodes be flaying on "Visions" as they vamp to a climax like a Bootsy Collins solo. It's all stripped back business of "NY So Hi" - get down to this! And for some quality, sustained loops check out "Thank You Les". "Up All Night" is a dubbed-out, cool-as, disco-tinged burner and there's a whole load to discover here in a debut album rich with the type of soul you can only get from the streets of the big apple.

Review: Sly's latest project has got every mandem and his dog talking. Releasing on the label he co-owns with Pacso and still under the superb guidance of Urban Agency (the guys who take care of none other than Original Sin, Taxman and Tyke no less), it's fair to say this is a big one. Bang in the middle of jump up and super-rhythmic drum and bass, there's a lot to shout about. Lead track "Hands Up" is an undeniable crowdpleaser, the heavier sounds rip out further along the tracklist. Get your hands on this as a late summer necessity.

Review: George Kelly AKA DJ Butcher - a fine Greek purveyour of soul, funk and boogie edits - is back with another collection of block rocking beats. No guessing who he samples on "Slim Shaddy" over a low slung funk groove. "Happy Moog" goes funky house, utilising that Pino D'Angio sample, and damn well. "You Dont Stop" is a good re-edit of Tom Tom Clubs "Wordy Rappinghood", "Need Some" is a hi-HRG version of "Hot Stuff" and if that wasn't enough, "Black Jeans" is a cheeky remix of you guessed it; Billy Jean by MJ. This collection of hot tracks are all you need for the next hoe down!

Yoyo - (5:58) 174 BPM

Review: One of the most prolific duos in D&B, NFM return to V with four more firing originals. "Chariot" charges with psychedelic nuances and a killer vocal that sits deep in the mix and sounds somewhere between Lou Rhodes and Beth Gibbons. Deep roller "Blood Orange" licks with a deliciously loose and elasticated double bassline. "Club Foot" is a much funkier, more complex affair with a bassline that's been reversed and processed so many times its schizophrenic. "Yoyo" closes the show with the EP's meanest message yet; with a barking bassline, stripped back drums and very little else, there's a really heavy mid/late 90s Ram feel to this... Which is definitely no bad thing.

Review: With its' live-sounding disco beats, killer bass guitar parts and nagging clavinet hooks, Joey Negro's Funk Equation mix of new single "Free Bass" sounds a little like the retro-futurist brilliance of forgotten French producer Blackjoy. While tight and rolling enough for house sets, it's effectively a "proper" disco record - albeit one with more than a hint of delay-heavy psychedelia amongst the cheery clav lines and killer bass. Shield and Corrado Bucci provide a tasty "re-edit" on the virtual flipside, adding long, drawn out chords and additional percussion for neat deep house-meets-classic disco feel. Both tracks are tailor-made for peak time sets.

Review: Luxembourg upstart Vacuum packs in another banquet-level bounty on Fatman Dee's Biological brand. It's jump-up, but not as we know. Loose, swaggering and leftfield, there's a rich, tangible funk to cuts such as "Low" and "Play It For Me" that's reminiscent of TC's early work. Deeper into the feast we chow down on the neuro-tinged title track, guzzle a gallon of groove juice on the low-slung alien-rattling "Rollers" and climax with the space-bound wobble grizzler "So We Stop". Time to wipe those bass crumbs from our beards and get busy.

Review: In:Flux Audio open their first Get Fluxed compilation with the ludicrous bounce of Swedger's "Shellsuit Temptress", and it gets even sillier with the tinges of electro-swing in 1Point5's "Villian". There are more streamlined, deeper passages though, like Pavv's remix of "Hold Up" (neat vocal samples to boot) to Prude Lerude's "I Need Your Love". For beats more stripped and torn check Ramage's "Happy Days" and the Samphet's "Badman", but the best old school UKG flavours come through on Gammy and Mr LA productions. UK garage never sounded so 2015.

Review: Proper drum and bass full of ragga twists to lose your mind to on this compilation thanks to Lion Dub label head Marcus Visionary. This release moves from the rolling reggae rhythms of "Ruff & Tuff" to the frenetic throwabouts of "Original Jungle Sound". Tear out vibes are to be had on "Born To Fly", and to be honest this release doesn't let up at all, and for a real weapon check out the anthem that is Navigator's "Sound The Alarm". But for something to potentially wind down to, relatively speaking, it's all about Marcus Visionary's VIP version of Jah Cure's "Never Find".

Review: Sven Vath's annual residency in Ibiza is home to some of the best and most adventurous electronic music on the white island and the annual compilations follow the same path. O starts with the fuzzy, frazzled trance of Roland M Dill's "The Messenger", followed by the rolling, steppy house of Tripmastaz "Grindin" and Dana Ruh's "If You Don't Know A Name", which sounds inspired by the growling bass of Kevin Saunderson's E-Dancer project. The madness doesn't end there and O also boasts trance techno from Dast, Tom Demac's rave sampling house and Steve Parker's tribal techno banger, ""Brian's Lullaby" - making the compilation as wild and unpredictable as Cocoon's own nights.

Review: Disco/house fusionist P-Sol has long since established himself amongst the higher echelons of the re-edit community, with releases to his name on such labels as Hot Digits, FKR, Editorial, DiscoDat, and Masterworks Music. Here he pops up on Rebel Hearts with another trio of tried-and-tested reworks. The Brooklyn-based producer begins with "Take It Off", a smooth, low-slung disco-funk bumper that sounds like a blazed take on Soundstream. There's more of a celebratory feel to the filter-heavy bounce of "Going Way Back", an impressive re-imagining of Odyssey's "Going Back To My Roots" that focuses on short, lesser-known excerpts of the 12" version. Finally, he returns to disco-funk for a heavyweight re-interpretation of "Bus Stop" - entitled "Don't Stop" - that makes great use of the original organ solos.

Review: Bringing people together through the power of good drum and bass isn't alien to these guys - Gun Audio run City Flow Festival back home in Antwerp, offering one of the biggest platforms for hard hitting jump-up sounds in Western Europe. Their Reload EP series has so far seen the rise of too many new artists to count and it's these massive compilations that the people want to hear. They bring City Flow together and they show off what's yet to come for the next year. Soul Intent, T>I and Supreme Being all make appearances, but it's the surprising new upstarts you want to listen out for. Expect very big things.

Review: Having already been dubbed 'fire' by Krissi B and also bigged up by Butterz, the hype around the Wait EP is growing. Back with a bang, the release kicks off with Vital Techniques' speedy hacksaw-bass jam, "Make Me Feel", before Mikey B's "Damage" delivers some seriously aggressive wobble action. Then they pair up for the orchestrated dubby 2-step gem, "Wait".

Review: Oh boy... Last time these two roustabouts collided in the studio "Mythos" happened... And became one of the biggest D&B tracks of 2013. Expectations have been set high since both parties teased us earlier this year. And thankfully we've not been let down; "Footpath" (which also features the perennial Kiwis The Upbeats) is a savage roller that sounds like live electricity lashing out of your speakers. "Leibniz" takes us deeper into the neuro badlands with full emphasis on the undulating bassline and strange textured loop. One for the build-up, one for the pay-off... Insideinfo and Mefjus never disappoint.

Review: It's now been 12 years since Kraak & Smaak's debut release. Their trademark party-friendly sound has matured much since then, as this rich and evocative vocal cut aptly demonstrates. Utilising their now usual live instrumentation, "Way Back Home" sits somewhere between classic vocal house and electrofunk-influenced deep house, with lashings of clipped funk guitars thrown in for good measure. Fouk provide the accompanying remix, opting to turn the track into a woozy, deep disco shuffler via emphasized breakdowns and yearning chords. If you're looking for something a bit sweatier, bonus track "Seb's Party" delivers just the right balance between basement house revivalism, starlight disco and Detroit Swindle style deep house.

from $2.01
Review: Following outings on Popular People's Front and Whiskey Disco, Rhythm Plate man Ant Plate brings his YSE Saint Laur'ant alias to Editorial for the first time. As you might expect from a man of his experience, the quality threshold is high, and the source material obscure. He opens with the low-slung, Japanese-influenced, Tom Tom Club style disco-funk of "Bow Legged Robot", before taking things up a notch with the classic disco groove, tight horns and swirling strings of "Keep In Step". There's more classic strings and eyes-closed builds to be found on the superb "When Are You Gonna Land", which benefits greatly from a killer percussive break midway through. Finally, he serves up a delicious chunk of summery jazz-funk/disco fusion on the decidedly breezy, Brazilian sounding closer "The Optimistic Voyeur".

Review: Following an excellent Springtime outing on KAT Records, scalpel specialist Deadly Sins returns 'home' to the Giant Cuts label he's run successfully for the last half-decade. Those who heard that KAT EP will feel right at home, as some of the cuts here appeared on that vinyl-only affair. Regardless, there's much to admire, from the hazy, Clavinet-heavy Afro-disco goodness of "Afro Groove", to the rolling sweetness of "Get Orf My Laaand" (a rework of Curtis Mayfield classic "Give Me Your Love"). Mary Wilson rework "Groovy Mary" is a red-hot disco-funk smasher, while "Ooh Eye" delivers a smart, dancefloor-friendly rearrangement of Crown Heights Affair's brilliant "Say A Prayer".

Review: Three lessons of straight-up ugly science from Nymfo right here: "Don't Stop" sees the flying Dutchman dig deep into neuro naughtiness with the help of Brazilian BTK. "Top Secret", meanwhile, is a much deeper affair with a growling bassline that undulates and snarls with real isolation and coldness. Finally "Ship Wreck" finishes on a funkier note as a collection of basslines wrap themselves around the heavily swung rhythm so tightly they almost cut of the blood supply. Dangerous.

Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".
