Review: Murderation: Filthy Habits have been pushing out high grade drum & bass for some years now, but this is a whole new level. Highlights include the way "Artificial Intelligence" subverts everything you know about drops with its rising, paranoid riff; the way "1.17AM" creates the sensation of driving 100mph down the wrong side of the motorway; the way "Retaliation" buzzes and jitters like a digital bees nest on fire and the way that sudden extra jungle fill on "Yeah" well and truly knocks you off your feet each and every time. Powerful, uncompromising and utterly, utterly filthy.

Review: 21 years old. How about that then? Some of us were barely out of nappies when London Elektricity first launched the imprint, some of us remember like it was yesterday. Either way, we are all united under the big flouro H and right now they're celebrating their coming of age with a humungous 70 track collection. Yes, 70! Each cut handpicked to represent the London imprint's constantly evolving but always soul-touched and groove-laden sound are 24 exclusives such as Urbandawn's insane version of Reso's "Taiga", Fred V & Grafix's titanium colab with Metrik "Tension", Serum & Inja's already-massive "Blow Dem" and Whiney's remix of TC's chop-slapping "Storm Brew". Massive. Happy birthday Hospital!

BUY
Anymore - (3:51) 170 BPM
from $1.87
Review: Filed under Q in the D&B dictionary for Quintessential Breakage Rollers, James Breakage Boyle has launched his own label and it would appear he's well and truly back in the jungle. "Elmhurst Dub" is all about the break and the dubby washes while "Anymore" is one a moodier steppy vibe. Both subby, slinky, dank and dangerous, neither track could be purer if Doc Scott gave them an autopsy. True craftsmanship.

Sameed - "Dusty Jazz" - (5:53) 120 BPM
from $1.87
Review: Since first dropping on wax in the autumn, this multi-artist affair has gone on to be one of Local Talk's most popular releases in years. It's easy to see why. Jamie 326 and Masalo's "Testify" is a fabulously urgent concoction - a low-sling, disco-tinged deep house bomb built around a restless rhythm track, impassioned, gospel style vocal snippets, and killer Clavinet lines. Sameed's dustier, sweatier "Can't U" offers a different slant on the same idea, offering a basement-bothering stomper that utilizes many of the same samples. Finally, the same artist delivers something looser in the shape of deep jazz-house jam "Dusty Jazz".

Review: A key radar fixture since emerging on Euphonique's Sub-Woofah a few years back, Epicentre makes a return to Hybrid's Deep In The Jungle with five more jaw-dropping jungle jams. There's a strong sticky-icky theme as we spark up - "Dem Vibez" is a soundsystem shaker with notorious lyrical levels while "I Like Dope" wobbles with a bassline so authentically jungle it still needs to pay its Poll Tax. "Featherweight" belies its name with heavyweight drums and rolling breaks where a grunting sub provides the main hook. Stepping closer to the light, "Sweet Dreams" is a more cosmic roll-out with subtle psychedelic flourishes while "Watch Your Back" is an all-out lesson in jungle theatre - toxic bass, operatic vocals, sheer dance hedonism. 100% vibes.

Review: Tyke's Holographic Audio sparks up a big fat 2017 with a hefty seven-piece from the currently unfailing Damage Report. Every release of his last year was a blinder and we're looking just as destructive this year... The high harmonics and jazzy breakdown on "The Jitters", the crisp minimal funk and loose triplet swagger of "Back Ark", the cosmic twangs of "Backspace", the sandpaper volcano that is "From Earth", the wideboy wobbling sub and lolloping drums of "Not Right"... Each track hits with its own distinctive yet consistently heavy charm and character. Always underplayed and rough around the edges, these are the perfect antidote to the over-produced, digital-finessed D&B du jour.

Review: South coast filthy animal Damageman lives up to his name once again with another hefty collection on Eternal. Two new originals, two crucial VIPs: "My Selector" sets the pace with crisp sunshine skanks and a gritty Q&A drop while "Hit Me" flies into deepest space with eerie radar blips, woozy jazzy sax and a series of bass textures that hit you like a meteor storm. VIP-wise he's re-touched his last Eternal tracks with a few sinister surprises along the way. Selection satisfaction guaranteed.

Review: Some eighteen months after it first dropped on wax, Whiskey Disco's brilliant Disco Galaxie EP finally gets a digital download release. Given the quality on show, it should be an essential purchase for any club-focused disco DJ. The real killer is Kon's "Promised Land" edit, a thrillingly epic re-arrangement of a long slung, bass-driven disco monster that slowly builds to a dubbed-out crescendo over nine mesmerizing minutes. Elsewhere, Jacques Renault's "Disco Galaxie" is an authentic scalpel rework of a swirling, string-laden space disco stomper, while Love Dance moves towards Philadelphia Soul territory on the impassioned disco hustle of "Who Is He".

Review: For the latest release on his prolific Midnight Riot label, Yam Who has parachuted in special scalpel agents Disco Troopers. The all-action All Night Long EP is a perfect showcase of their style, which blends big disco samples and even larger beats with original electronic elements inspired by acid house and Italo-disco. The EP's headline attraction is undoubtedly opener "All Night Long", which underpins surging orchestral disco samples with heavy analogue bass and crunchy house beats. The strangely familiar "Eleven" sees them expertly blended druggy TB-303 motifs with spacey chords and Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, while "Howlin" is a fuzzy, cosmic disco vocal cut for dancefloors that like their grooves wavy and psychedelic.

Review: Birmingham blunderbuss K Motionz teams up with Spectre-affiliate Subsonic for two KO collabos and a series of solo originals."Worlds" is a brash roughhouser with savage sandpaper scuffing your very soul while "Sewer" takes us deep underground for a splash in the harmonic sonic slurry. Elsewhere Mr Motionz gets trippy on the humanised bass gurgles of "Diversion" and twisted on the multi-bass hits and tripletty swing of "Load while Subsonic whips up some serious string theatre on "Escape" while "Wun Style" shuts us down with true distorted drama. Titanic.

Review: The S.O.B.A.D crew descend on Nottingham with a whole armoury of hybrid bass/beat hurters. Sly One do all the driving as "My Name" slaps with a UK take on juke beats as a fork-tongued lava rap from TK Wonder whips up a dramatic frenzy. "TMB" sees the trio taking us on an even techier tip with its loopy, hypnotic vocal loop while crew mates Distro & Archive give UK funky a dark, demented update for today's paranoid times. Final S.O.B.A.D member Bromley winds down the trip by completely stripping "My Name" back down to a classic electro breaks groove. Block rocking.

Review: Fresh from the massive "Missing You" with LSB, DRS returns to his first artist release since his album Mid Mic Crisis. On a serious mission to spread positivity amid the scary climate, "I Will" is undiluted soul vocally, and musically as Patife dusts off the ivories with finesse. "Your Name" unplugs for an acoustic barbed tale from Skittles while "Sin" brings us back up to drum & bass with Utah Jazz laying down true drama in the groove. Finally Calibre creeps into the fray with a funk groove that's almost jaunty in its swing and dubbed guitar echoes. DRS respectfully joins in mid-way, really letting Dominck's groove settle in deep. Untouchable.

Review: Frankfurt innovator Rajko Muller returns as Isolee, working his magic this time for The Drifter's rather impressive Maeve imprint; which in recent times has brought us fantastic work by Ed Davenport, Baikal and Ripperton. "Pisco" is a slow burning groove with phased marimbas that cause a hypnotic dream state, while "L5 Syndrome" dives deeper: this smooth and introverted trip is definitely suited to the early night as it is for the afterhours and reminds us of his seminal, earlier works in the nineties for imprints like Playhouse. Finally, the title track is where Muller saves the best for last; this dubby, lo-slung groove is drenched in delayed and reverberated aesthetics. More great work by one of electronic music's true innovators.

Review: Some artists have the midas collabo touch. Artists like Need For Mirrors and Phil Tangent. Both superb vibe maestros in their own right, they also run extensive lines in partnerships... It was only a matter of time before they collided. And they've done so with five slices of pure gold. The whole collection is essential with highlights including the hazy swoops and reverse textures of "Candelabra", the restrained skin-melting poignancy of "Shifting Tones", the propeller-like heads-down rolls of "Residue" and a whole load more.

Review: By anyone's standards, ESP Institute enjoyed a hugely successful 2016, delivering a string of fine singles and killer albums from Moscoman and Lord of the Isles. This first digital missive of 2017 is equally as impressive, and comes from the previously unheard Nancy Azzuro. Opener "Grace" is undoubtedly impressive; a rolling trip into 21st century dub disco territory blessed with killer percussion work and an addictive electronic bassline. "Illustrations & The Large" is a deliciously woozy and melodious chunk of softly spoken Balearic deep house, while the loopier "Teen Bee" fixes ghostly melodies onto a loose and warm disco-house groove.

Review: Fresh from his recent Metalheadz muscle flexing, Tangent makes his Horizons debut with three slabs of restrained, rolling dynamite. "Have Faith" hits with a similar air as Artificial Intelligence thanks to the ethereal vocal and its placement in the mix. "Crestfallen" is a real slinker of a tune, all slippery and jittery and coated with a downpitched vocal while "Procrastinateur" makes an art of our time-wasting thanks to its oceanic pads, keys and spacey textures. Stunning.

Review: Find your own personal inner rhythm as prolific soul veteran Furney returns to SDE with four adventures into the divine deep "It Must Be You" sashays with a slight eastern twang, pipes and a distinctive lead vocal while "Missouri" is a spring morning jive, all sprinkly keys and light-fingered feels. "The End" pays homage to drum & bass's spiritual church with a badboy jazzy roller that wouldn't have gone amiss on the mighty V back in the day. Fittingly we conclude with "Much Of A Deepness", a tripped-out heads-down roller with wee traces of Calibre in the dustiness of the piano sample. Exceptional, as always.

He Is The Voice I Hear - (10:29) 118 BPM Biggest-selling track on this release

Review: There's naturally been plenty of hype surrounding The Black Madonna's "He Is The Voice I Hear", which originally dropped on a single-sided 12" at the tail end of 2016. It's undoubtedly the fast-rising Chicagoan's best record to date, and feels like an unashamed tribute to Patrick Cowley's fine productions for disco icon Sylvester. While there are mournful notes - check the extended, beat-less piano intro -it doesn't take long to turn into a deliciously muscular, Italo-disco style chugger laden with razor-sharp strings, bubbling acid lines, and the kind of fluid piano solos that were once a hall mark of Frankie Knuckles' remixes. In other words, it's a fine contemporary disco record from one of dance music's most notable DJs of recent times.

Review: Given the quality of Steve Werkshy' Young's expansive, nine-track debut on Late Shift - 2016's Reworks & More - we're not surprised that Yam Who has signed him to Midnight Riot. His first outing on the popular edit imprint contains a trio of immaculately crafted reworks. On opener "Don't You Want Me", he carefully fuses elements of '80s soul, jazz-funk and soul-flecked deep house to create a loose, saucer-eyed gem. He utilizes all of his knowledge of build-and-release structure on the similarly soulful "Surrender", which sounds like a 21st century update of the kind of proto-house dubs that were popular in the Paradise Garage circa 1986. He rounds off the EP with "Supermoon", a chunk of loopy, filter and delay heavy disco-house that rises and falls in all the right places.

Review: To be honest, it's about time that Logan Sama had the space to compile his own series of mythical London club Fabric's, Fabriclive series. The grime DJ started his career back on the equally important Rinse FM back in 2002, and has been an important part of the club's development over the years that saw grime and dubstep blow up. At number 83 in the series, Sama drops a selection of tunes that are wholly representative of his DJ sets in Fabric's Room 1; the mix contains tunes by everyone from grime pioneer Wiley, to vocalist and producer JME, and a whole load of lesser known names that have kept the grime scene evolving. This is the real deal, there ain't not other like it around these days. Recommended.

Are You Mad? Cause I'm Not Mad... - (7:39) 124 BPM

Review: The genius of Baba Stiltz productions - aside from their consistent high quality, of course - has always been their eccentric unpredictability. His latest EP for Studio Barnhus - his first for the Swedish label since the tail end of 2015 - sticks to this script. Across the five tracks, you'll hear tactile and dreamy deep house bliss ("Snowwhite"), future R&B-informed vocal synth-pop ("Baby"), bubbly, sun-kissed synthesizer Balearica ("Freeeze"), and hypnotic, loved-up tech-house brilliance (the superb "Are You Mad? Cause I'm Not Mad"). Arguably most impressive of all, though, is the humid "XXX200003", which gently rises on waves of marimba melodies, African-influenced percussion, and fireside-hot chords.

Review: It's a new year, and it's time for some new imprints. That's the way we operate. Jelly Bean Farm is among the labels to launch in 2017 but, while others would think of pacing themselves with a debut EP, these guys have gone and dropped a whole compilation of new, unforgiving bass science from all corners of the extended genre. There are twelve killer cuts to choose from here, all from emergent talents, and we've got our eyes set on a number of them. Hypho's "Majikk" is a glorious neo-grime workout that stretches the genre to the very limits, "Pistol Signal" from Opus is a bubbling, potent new strain of hydro-phonic dubstep, PAN:INC's "Freight" is the sort of techno that any bass-boy dreams at night, and Sensei's "Reed" manages to blur the most daring elements of jungle and minimal techno together as if they were made to be one and one. Check it all out, though, this is a true goldmine of all things bass-oriented. Watch out for more Jelly Bean Farm gear.

Review: What a year it's been for US deep bass imprint Version Collective. Exactly a year ago their inaugural Certified Organic collection lit a raging fire of smouldering singles and, most recently, a remarkable album by Sweepa. Now comes the sequel... Once again it's a far-ranging exploration that takes in some truly unique perspectives with highlights such as the discordant metallic strings of Lilti's remix of "Womple", the delicious didgeridoo-style bass weirdness of Basiclee's "Voyage Dub", the gully croaks and slaps of Drew's Theory's defiant "Nonsense & Knowledge" and the industrial strength drum textures and springy sub of Mr K's "Damage". Another serious statement of intent and showcase of exciting, forward-thinking dub talent, Version Collective are staring down the barrel of another exciting sonically innovative year.

Review: Having previously released music on a swathe of highly regarded labels - Correspondant, Hivern Discs and Young Adults included - Marvin & Guy pops up on Munich's long running Permanent Vacation imprint. The Italian duo is in typically eccentric mood, serving up a quartet of cuts that seem keen to avoid easy categorization. Check, for example, the psychedelia meets Itallo-disco at the Cosmic Club vibes of "Theme From 'Fire! Fire!'", the baggy and Balearic-minded shuffle of vocal curio "Mother Nature Is Calling You", and the clandestine, high octane thrills of "Moreno", which sounds like the '88 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" after a session in Italy's sleaziest club.

Review: When Bas Bron agreed to re-release his track "What's A Girl To Do?' on Dekmantel in 2015, he could not have imagined the success and acclaim it would go on to enjoy. Then the Dutch producer faced a fresh dilemma - how to make a suitable follow-up. He seems to have overcome this hurdle with Arava. While the title track's soaring bass and sun-kissed melodies are tailored made for festivals and big rooms, the real Fatima Yamaha sound is audible on the laid-back electro funk of "Piayes Beach Bar And Grill", while another slow-burning classic is audible on the easy-listening electronics of "Romantic Bureaucracy".

Review: We're lucky we grasp a release a year from Karma's gnarly paws. But when we do, we always pay attention. Here are three reminders why. "Terrorist" wades into the fray with pneumatic beats that are reminiscent of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack. Foggy, misty and laced with a crucial Reggae vocal sample, it has a tsunami-like effect through a big system as waves of dubspace wash over the crowd. "Cha" continues the pneumatic rhythm feels. But this time with a persistent techno-like 4x4 that's wrapped in tight layers of warped subs. "Vacant Mind" neatly counters the energy of "Cha" with a pensive slo-mo march into the foggy void. All elements and textures woozily working together to create somnambulant momentum, it's Karma at his most meditative. Already sold out on limited vinyl, this is a seriously key release.

Take for instance Dominator & Heist with their fierce DJ Krust influenced stepper "Trouble"; that strings section in the middle is just classic! Next up Dominator teams up with Upgrade on "Couldn't Care Less" which rolls and growls away ferociously in a purist techstep tradition. Dominator, again, shows us his skills in conjunction with Invictus; this time on the dark and suspenseful sci-fi beat futurism of "Infected", which brazenly wears its Virus Recording influence on its sleeve and we can dig that!

Review: It would be fair to refer to Dino Lenny as a "veteran": the Italian producer has been churning out dancefloor hits since the dawn of the '90s. This release sees him join forces with Cajual and Hot Creations regular Doorly for a loving tribute to the joys of club culture. The action centres on a meandering, largely spoken vocal describing a mesmerizing late night dancing experience in "The Magic Room". On the lead version - a tasty re-edit by Lenny and Seth Troxler - this is accompanied by "Lazy" style pianos, and a chunky, disco-tinged house groove. The low-slung guitars and bass are pushed to the fore on Doorly's energy-packed remix, while Luke Solomon doffs a cap to the jazz-flecked boompty sounds of Chicago on his busy rework.

Review: Since first emerging in 2014, Dutch duo Artefakt has earned a reputation for delivering spacey, melodious techno tracks that mines both classic Detroit techno, and British style 'intelligent techno' for inspiration. On this hotly anticipated debut album, they cast their net a little wider, including denser rhythms and more left of centre sounds amongst the starry melodies, intergalactic chords, and sparkling drum machine beats. It's a formula that consistently delivers results, from the undulating, tribal-influenced rhythms and emotion-rich musicality of "Entering The City", to the angry, acid-fuelled onslaught of "Return To Reason", via the sun-kissed electro brilliance of "Somatic Dreams".

Review: Hot to trot vibes machine FooR goes balls-deep on this epic 50+ track compendium. Bulging at the seams with slinky two-steps, stinking basslines and every essential element in between, it's an incredible collection of on-point bass music cuts spun around the UKG / bass house axis. Those with a soulful interest should instantly fall for cuts like Thorn's "In 2 Deep", anthem-addicts need to know about Foor's own heavenly synth/guttural bass jam "Lift Me Up", bass-devoted breakers will go giddy for "Don't Hold Back", gully munchers will chow down heartily on Tyrone's "Ravin Face" while DJs in need of more of a classical deep roll-out should be smitten by Tengu's "Evil Ting". And that's not even scratching the surface - this is a true trove of future talent and shadowy sonic skill. Golly gosh YosH.
