Review: 39 tracks, 10 FX sounds and a full mix. This isn't any old slice of afternoon cake you might share your elderly neighbour or distant relative, this is a seven-tiered wedding cake full of every type of unhealthy, fattening ingredient you can imagine. And we're not stopping until we've chowed the lot. If you've feasted on Deekline and Solo's Jungle Cakes before then you'll already know how tasty this is; a selection of their own releases and similarly spirited cuts from the scene, all laced with dubwise, dancehall and skank-soaked soul. Highlights hang from every corner but you'd be mad not to peak at Aries & Gold's soul-flecked massage of Mr Benn, or Dominator & Logan D's brokeback bust-up "Cowboy" or Serial Killaz' savage repurposing of Freestyler's iconic "Entertainer". High calorie badness.

Review: You may have already figured out that We Mean Disco's latest re-edit EP is an unashamed tribute to the self-styled King Of Pop, Michael Jackson. As usual, man of mystery Philly Manilli is at the controls, adding his distinctive touch to two Jacko classics, and a much-loved disco reggae cover version. The Manilli man's version of "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" builds up brilliantly in a similar manner to The Reflex's various MJ revisions, while his rework of "Off The Wall" turns the disco classic into a loopy, floor-friendly house jam. The package is completed by a tasty, dub-wise rearrangement of Derrick Laro and Trinity's killer 1980 reggae re-invention of "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough".

Review: Vehicle have been contributing to the contemporary nu-disco scene like few others labels and, to them, nothing is an obstacle, and no genre or style should be excluded. Zed Zeppelin's dub version of "Heartbreaker" is a refreshing disco take on the original, with its riffs still intact and rolling; "Stop Your Pressure" by MJJ takes Michael Jackson to a next level; J Hammond's "Fantasy" is a disco beauty; The Militia's version of "Roxanne" by Police moves those infamous vocals to new and interesting pastures; Timmy Tommy's "Live Together" is an devilish little monster that manages to fuel house with a crazy set of organs.

Review: Nu-disco hero 80s Child has come a long way since Masterworks Vol 1, the inaugural release on his Masterworks label a year and a half ago. Now we have the follow-up and it reveals how the label's sound has grown. There are 26 sizzling bangers on board this time, boasting a million delirious dance floor moments. Highlights of which include the fizzy thump-funk of 80s Child's "Computerized", Peza's doomy analogue electro mash up "Filmed Message" and the smooth, synthetic boogie of "Much Too Much" by Deelicious.

Review: After a few quiet years, Tensnake returned to form in 2015, and has so far enjoyed a productive 2016. Freudchen is his second EP of the year, and offers a back-to-basics collection of dancefloor-ready club tracks. The title track, where vocal flourishes, synth stabs and life-affirming disco samples ride a hard-edged, undulating Italo-disco style arpeggio, is undoubtedly the highlight, though there are still reasons to be cheerful elsewhere. With its' occasional African vocal samples, jaunty riffs and carnival-friendly whistles, "Tazaar" sounds like the German producer's take on the late '80s Inner City sound, while "No Fool" layers a relentless, thumping, kick-drum driven beat with distinctly Balearic flourishes.

Review: Congratulations to Germany's Dirt Crew Recordings, which marks a century of releases with a celebratory volume of the popular Deep Love compilation series. As befits the momentous occasion, the 11 tracks on offer are all exclusive and previously unreleased. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from the dusty, crackly deep house warmth of Felix Leifur's "Feels Like", and classic U.S garage swing of Ponty Mython's "New York, New York", to the sweet, jazz-flecked haziness of Harry Wolfman's "Rainbow Set", and Huerta's dreamy, glassy-eyed Balearic deep house cut, "Blvrd". Throw in fine contributions from big hitters Detroit Swindle, Nachtbraker and The Revenge, and you have an undeniably essential collection.

Review: Boston master digger Kon presents Kon & The Gang, a splendid selection of low slung grooves, slo-mo house and deep disco. The 'king of edits' serves up exclusive, unreleased music from himself and a variety of his current favourite artists including Truccy (better known as Compost's Rainer Truby and Corrado Bucci) who present "Closer", a gorgeous house jam with a rolling groove featuring all the good stuff: swirling Rhodes keys, groovy congas and hypnotic vox. Man on the moment Eli Escobar from NYC who offers up the infectious Bushwick loft party vibes of "Back 2 Luv (feat Steven Klavier)". Doc Daneeka, most usually known for his techno work also appears with the ultra deep "I Promise (feat Seven Davis Jr - Kon Rework)" which was a real highlight too!

Review: It's a Bristol thing: Deep In The Jungle mainstay Audiomission rallies up the crew for four skank-packed jungle workouts. Together they lay down "Live & Let Live" and "Yeah Man" - the former hits with bouncy mid 90s jungle mischief, hurts with modern production and massages with a conscious vocal line while the latter whisks us back to the rushiest of rave meltdowns. Elsewhere Pull Up Collective go solo with the siren wailing jungle blazer "Big Up" a track that's transformed into a ragged edge amen war cry by Kartoon. Proper.

Review: Guv's Dubz Audio imprint goes from the strength to strength, consistently identifying the originators in an increasingly cluttered market. "DAPVA" is the label's first v/a collection, featuring one of the label's most consistent artists (Hedex) and three label debuts from men who need no introduction. Hedex is all about the heavily coded funk in the riff, Dilate conjures up a cool subby roller with added industrial strength percussion while Ironlong brings the one-note riff hype in a similar way to Tyke or Hazard. Finally, K Motionz closes the show with some subversive drama as the build craftily teases into a hair-raising drop you'd never expect. Damagement.

Review: Ben Sun made his debut back in 2013, delivering a chunk of life-affirming deep house for Quintessentials' Thanks You Freaks compilation. Three years on, Delusions of Grandeur has handed him the opportunity to showcase his talents over a three-track E.P. His style, which blends elements of electronic disco, deep house and glassy-eyed Balearica, is perfectly suited to the Freerange offshoot. Particularly enjoyable is "Star Ritual", where trippy, delay-laden boogie vocal samples ride a reverb-heavy, African-influenced drum rhythm and undulating, analogue bassline. Elsewhere, shirts may be removed for the bleep-heavy nu-disco/deep house fusion of "Full Moon", while the overwhelmingly tactile "Glass Waves" is little less than a piano-heavy chunk of early Italian deep house revivalism.

Review: Oh gosh. DJ Hybrid has been bang on point with every plate he's dropped in the last two years. Now the men who've benefited from his bullets in their sets return the favour with this first volume of remixes from last year's album Mixed Origins; Callide takes us right back to early 2000s Fresh-style savagery on "It's Murder", Ray Keith polishes up his amen knuckle dusters on "Run Away" while Benny L adds a whole new level of floating charm to "Bring It Back". Deeper into the collection Livewire and Samurai Breaks take us right back to 92 with new school techniques, DJ LAB lays down some superlative subs on "Boom In 93", Schematic twist "Beyond My Control" into a fuzzy distorted grizzler while finally Section busts up the drums in his faithful twist on "Lost In The Music". Album remix packages really don't come broader or badder than this.

Review: Firing tomorrow-talent from Manchester, Solix has an exciting future ahead of him. Proof? This massive six-pack bass attack. Sitting on the funkier side of jump up, there's a mischievous charm to the young producer that's instantly distinctive; the crafty triplet on the riff and Goodfellas sample on "Funny", the playful sense of contrast on "Force" as the middy hits and guttural low-swung bass go toe-to-toe and brilliant sample use on the laser-pinging "Stabby" are three of the many highlights you need to check right here.

Review: It would be fair to say that Holm CPU's Fotspor, a 1981 blue-eyed soul cut featured on the band's one and only album, .Login, is little-known outside of its' native Norway. In a bid to change that, Todd Terje has assembled a crack team of remixers to drag it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The man himself delivers a pair of reworks: a confident Disco Remix that subtly beefs up the shuffling, dewy-eyed original, and a brilliant, Idjut Boys style Disco Dub (think heavy percussion, space echo, and a greater role for the original bassline). Bjorn Torske successfully takes a similar approach on his blazed dub disco reinterpretation, while Rune Lindbeak somehow turns it into a throbbing chunk of synth-heavy weirdo house.

Review: Lately Leeds' Deelicious has seen his loose and groovy tunes grace the likes of Sound Exhibitions and Disco Fruit. Here he rolls out five sizzling new bangers. The urgent slice of socially conscious funk, "Lonely Town Lonely Street", kicks things off, "Trust Me" incorporates housier filtered loops into the mix and the title track is celebratory slice of disco-pop with some ace bloc-rocking breaks and punk-funk bass work. Elsewhere we enter orbit with the melodramatic sci-fi boogie of "Mechanical Body" and "Change Your Mind" is an amazing example of early underground dance music reconfigured by a 21st century perspective.

Review: Total Science and DLR... Need we say any more? DLR sets the tone with his own "Thinking About Tomorrow" where a precision balanced warm tech groove carries jazz chords to unknown hypnotic pastures. "On The Edge", meanwhile, hurtles jauntily into funky town with a bassline that staggers dangerously behind the kicks creating a tripped out groove that really shouldn't work... But does. Innovative and true to the craft - Dispatch never disappoint.

Review: 2016 has been a good year for re-editor Evil Smarty. He's already put out killer material on Midnight Riot and Masterworks Music, and here pops up on Tonbe's Disco Fruit imprint for the first time. He gets down to business straight away with "Feel My Fire", a superb re-cut of the Osmonds' "I,I,I" that benefits greatly from some fresh new acid lines. "If It Feels Good" sees him in a celebratory mood (think sing-along disco funk with swinging new locked-in drums), while "Striking Back" - all elastic slap bass, dubbed-out Latin horns and disco-funk swagger - sounds tailor-made for sweaty, late night dancefloors. Finally, he ratchets the percussion up further on the hustling, T Connection style heavy disco of "Turn Me On".

Review: Berlin's Toy Tonics latest trick is Jockey Jams, the first in an 'irregular series of various artist EPs'. They've rustled up an interesting mix too, starting with the warm mid-paced throb of "Sex' by Black Loops, which features the voice of Scarlett Johansen (from the movie Her). Elsewhere "Waterfalls" by Moritz Butschek, which has that sleazy DJ Hell sound, Portugal's Pixel82 sees his diva house jam Going On given a choppy, hypnotic rework by Australian surfer dude Jad & The Ladyboy. Lastly New York's Doug Gomez wraps things up nicely with the clavinet-driven old school funk joint "Make Your Body Move".

Review: Second To None Music have chosen the right name for their label. These guys should not be underestimated, and their output is among the best UK bass, garage and funky that we have heard recently. This statement compilation is simply putting them on a lot of people's radars, and getting the to know that absolutely nobody at their HQ is messing around when it comes to relaxing fresh bangers for the UK's dance floors. The music is wild and diverse, ranging from pure bassline to UK funky, and there are certainly plenty of noticeable artists and known faces here, including neb-dancehall specialist Deadbeat, Mikey B, B Squared, and Hypho. If you're into the British way of doing house, then this twist up will surely satisfy.

Review: In 2007, renowned French producer Julien Jabre tracked down the American gospel singer Phyliss McKoy Joubert on MySpace. Joubert was already a cult figure for house aficionados thanks to "Stand on the Word", a song she wrote and performed with her "Celestial Choir" in 1982 that became a staple of the club scene in New York. It resurfaced as a mysterious bootleg in 2000. Julien, who'd fallen in love with the song, was eager to remix and officialy rerelease it. When he finally reached out to Phyliss, she explained the multitrack tape had been lost. The only thing to do was rerecording it-along with 10 other tracks. Today on French label Elias, Julien and The Joubert Singers are releasing "Stand on the Word" in its original and unique 1982 version (mistakenly named after Larry Levan) and 3 brand new mixes including a fresh Dimitri From Paris remix. That's how the Good Lord works!

Review: Nachtbraker's latest expansive EP for Heist Recordings - his first release of 2016 - boasts a host of hot, floor-friendly excursions. The EP's first two missives offer two distinctly different takes on disco-house - the throbbing sub-bass, extra percussion hits and early Daft Punk riffs of "Gotta Act To React", versus the smooth, classic disco-sampling loop-jam "Pollo Con Pollo" - before the woozy, drawn out "Intermezzlow" allows the Dutch producer to showcase the groovy, downtempo side to his work. The accompanying "Intermezzo" is a jazzy, percussive deep house variation on the same sun-kissed theme, while "Gotta Act To React (Float Mix)" re-casts the EP's opening tune as a hazy deep house bumper.

Review: This is some big dog business, a new Butterz special that'll please the bass and grime crews alike. Swindle is the producer, a UK badman who has appeared on labels like Mala's Deep Medi Musik, and he's accompanied by the creme de la creme of grime vocalism. "Lemon Trees" is a fast, choppy bass swinger powered by funky synth melodies and D Double E's inimitable swagger, while UK hip-hop rapper Ghetts spills some truth over "Works Haffi Run". Flava D and JME go for a head-to-head battle on the house-driven dubstep hybrid that is "Mad Ting", and to cap it all of you got an instrumental each of "Lemon Trees" and Works Haffi Run". BAD.

Review: Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger's recent Vinyl TV show depicted the birth of New York black party culture with the mighty Kool Herc at the helm. Here Dr Packer riffs off that same imagery too, even if his edits are more in the disco vein than that of Herc's hard funk breaks. There are a whopping six edits to wrap your ears around here, highlights include sensuous 70s boogie, complete with electro bassline, of "Disco Lovin", the protracted hiNRG New Order loops of "Monday Blues" and the shimmering, dry ice soul of "Chocolate Boogie". Fun music for fun times!

Review: Local Talk's Edits compilation series has already garnered high quality contributions from the much-loved Swede HNNY and German producer Kyodai; this third one sees the label look across the Atlantic and welcome producer, DJ, label owner and all around good guy Jacques Renault into the fold. The Let's Play House co-founder has plenty of form when it comes to the edit (anyone remember those killer Wurst Edits he did with Marcus Cabral as Runaway?) and this delve through the Local Talk archives demonstrates his poise for the form remains unfettered. Rifling through the main label archives plus their OneOffs, 1nce Again and the LTX series, Renault delivers a supreme 12-track selection that will feature prominently on your USB stick playlists. His tweak of "Denim Shorts Dream" by Bristol house unit Outboxx is a particular highlight.

Review: While his live appearances are placing him on the radar of ever more enlightened house heads the world over, Kink is showing no signs of slacking on the production front either. The clue is in his name, and as ever there are plenty of subtly shimmying tricks in the Bulgarian mastermind's grooves to keep the stiffest of dancers shaking on the off-beat. "Valentine's Groove" is a masterclass in jazz-inflected deep house, all fuzzy chord stabs and badass bass for the funkiest shape flingers. "Strings" meanwhile reaches for a more emotive feeling, lashing on the Detroit romanticism to a wonderfully bombastic end.

Review: Chimpo on Exit. Is the world ready for this? Probably not. But since when did that stop guys like these? Especially with Trigga and Fox going toe-to-toe on the motorway-shredding rampage session "Ram Dance Man". Elsewhere "Bedsprings Riddim" warms up with sultry, jazzy come-to-bed tones before dropping into squeaky dancehall hanky-panky dopeness, "Suga Rush" has a touch of the old schools to its pads, breaks and pitched up vocal sample while "Stanna Stairlift" eases us into the groove with soft goosebump pads before dropping into some broad canvas stroke breaks which wouldn't have gone amiss on an old Big Bud record. Magnificent.

The cover of this eighth installment of edits reveals the good doc and colleagues hard at work resurrecting a giant disco ball and the sonic results can be heard on this mini-album. Highlights include the slinky clap-along, "Somebody Else", the noodle-bass moog boogie of "Xpand Your Mind" and the breaks-laden cocktail grind of "Tropical Jump". Good to hear disco has checked outta hospital and back on the dancefloor in full health.

Review: You don't get any more NYC than Manhattan disco/deep house hero Eli Escobar who presents his debut album on Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company. Starting out with the soulful feel good opener that is the title track, there's more quality on offer on the pure disco inferno "Phreeky" featuring Hercules & Love Affair's Nomi Ruiz on vocals (who appears on several tracks throughout the albums duration) and the cheeky "Chaka Khan" which is a bouncy after-hours jam for freaks and the deep low-slung groover "Next To Me". But that's just scraping the surface. The album is full of quality grooves from start to finish, inspired by one of the Big Apple's finest talents and we highly recommend it!

Review: Icelander-in-Oslo BG Baarregaard has so far proved adept at releasing both re-edits and original productions, along the way delivering EPs for Paper Disco, Disco Volante and Whiskey Disco. This EP sees him return to the latter with a trio of sparkling, floor-friendly re-edits. Choose between the dashing synth-boogie explorations of the proto-Metro Area slickness that is "Disco Inn", the delay-heavy, dubbed-out P-funk explorations of "Undercover Lover", and our pick of the trio, "Kaffibarinn". The genius of this latter track lies in its' tasty use of subtly changing TB-303 bass, clipped disco guitars, and twinkling deep house flourishes. It's musically hard to pin down, but sounds like a genuine floor-filler in the making.

Here though he only manages to provide two jams, but it's quality, not quantity, right? First up we get "Night Strangers" which takes loops from Candi Staton's Bee Gees cover (Nights On Broadway) and adds an accelerated disco house tempo and subtle but funky embellishments. On the digital flip is "On Fire", a clever rework of Peggy Lee's indestructible classic, Fever. Hot stuff!

Review: 20 years old and still sounding centuries ahead of the game, Optical's repertoire is a lesson in D&B history and future. Celebrating his influential tenure to date, here we find Optical selecting highlights from drum & bass's most formative era. Benchmark-setting cuts such as the Metalheadz-released spiralling paranoia jam "Raging Calm", the slinky Prototype-released stepper "Moving 808s" and the alien funk odyssey "Dark Skies" on Matrix's Metro are all present and correct, as are his solo highlights from his and Ed Rush's game-changing album Wormhole. With such a rich legacy to cherry pick from, these volumes could go on for days and remain relevant for years.

Review: Steve Huerta's first single for Amadeus, 2014's Apotheke, was widely praised for its' fusion of bumpin' deep house grooves and trippy, tech-tinged sounds. In contrast, Apache Line begins with "Mandala", a breezy, warm and lightly melodious deep house cut that benefits greatly from some intricate synth-work throughout. The deep and musically rich vibe continues on the Kaidi Tatham style broken beat-meets-jazz-funk flex of "EisTee", before Youandewan lends a hand on the bumpin', late night shuffle of "Apache Line". Youandewan gets a chance to go solo, too, completing a fine EP with the deliciously hypnotic, ocean-deep throb of "Yo Endlos".

Review: Frequently flexing around A.M.C's signature Titan sound (but not afraid of a little liquid soul when the time is right) Dub Motion reminds us who's boss with two more muscular peaktimers. All riff and iron trousers, "It Can Hurt You" is a real barnstorm banger with jump-up energy but techy weight. "Into The Dark" takes a deeper route with evocative synth arpeggios, a breathy vocal but equal gravity in the drums and low end. Two sides to one very heavy coin, Dub Motion's currency is high right now.

Review: It's kinda rare to see an artist delivering a full drum and bass album these days, but that's just how Nu Elementz like to vibe. Prophecy is a complete master blaster of an LP, with thirteen tracks of wild and diverse jump-up steppers charged and motored by devious swarms of mutant bass, reminding us of the that DJ Hazard school of thought that made the Playaz label what it is today. Tunes like "Speed Of Sound", "Evolution", and "Pablo Escobar" are the sort of gear you can break out if you're need of something nasty, something to bump sideways to amid a sea of hungry ravers. There are deeper moments, too, such as "Respect" or "Never Forget" featuring longtime drum and bass don Majistrate. No funny business, just pure rave vibes.

Review: It's safe to say that Kry Wolf now has a rather impressive catalogue behind him, and nothing but quality under his belt. The man behind the Sounds Of Sumo label drops his latest release for Night Bass and it seems like the perfect place for his wondrous bass cuts. "Temper" is a slow, shape-shifting beast with a rattling percussion hook that wraps perfectly around the tune's knotted swarms of swamp bass, whereas "Flashlight" unleashes a bit of four-to-the-floor beneath a sea of rave sirens and purring bass tones. "Wavvves" feels like the last piece of hardcore continuum, a break-heavy, pseudo jungle killer to tie this man's bass experimentalism in the best possible way. Hot!

Review: We're not quite sure what Disco Tech is celebrating with the Anniversary Edits, but there's no doubting that it's a bumper collection, stuffed full of tried-and-tested dancefloor rearrangements. Across the 24 tracks, you'll find reworks of familiar favourites ("Dreadlock", "Jamaican Funk", 'Keep Forgettin"), and lesser-known gems ("I Like The Feeling", the deliriously elastic disco workout that is "You're A Winner"), as well as edits that span a wide range of moods and tempos. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the pitched-down, boogie-era reggae-disco of "Feel About U" (a killer edit of a tasty cover of an Evelyn "Champagne" King staple), to the subtly beefed up disco-funk strut of "Too Funkay").

Review: Most discerning D&B fans have been anticipating this one for years now but it's safe to say few of us had any idea just how soulful and widescreen Mutated Forms' debut album would be. From the soft-touch pianos and yearning vocal sample of opener "We Belong" it's clear the Estonian duo mean business. Highlights hang off every corner like casually baggy threads; the cosmic flutters of "Alright", the rising hype build and deep throat bass and halftime drums of "Amazonica", the overwhelming exuberance of the horns on "Revelations", the 22nd century R&B of "Heaven Sent", the list goes on. Both as singular tracks for DJs and as a whole body of work, this album really does confirm everything we've suspected of Mutated Forms for years. Exceptional.
