Review: Just listen to that spaced-out groaning bassline on "The Test". If that doesn't take you off to some murky corners of the deep space of your mind, you might have to get a second opinion on those junglist credentials of yours. Classic Bladerunner. The same can be said for "Kick Off". Warming up mildly before dropping into a jagged, aggy riff (underpinned by warm subby wobbles), it lives up to its name in every way. We know you're gonna dig this!

Review: The Sheff City boys are back with 12 high calorie teatime treats all smothered in basslines that are thicker than chippy gravy! If Chip Shop vol 1 announced Chip Butty Recs as the new leading light of the 4x4 Garage sound, then volume 2 suggests that they plan to keep the heat on high at the fryery. Founding members deliver the on-point bangers that we have come to expect from them but it is the newcomers that bring the real sizzlers here; Rico Tibbs ascends to the skies with uplifting rave pianos on "Warning" Judge Chucky draws for the distortion on breakbeat-techno-bass hybrid "Customer Service". While Rolls Royce opts for an old school flex that we would love to see revived this summer festival season. Not a single dud spud in the batch!

Review: The connections continue as California duo Sub Killaz let rip with a second four-track volume of US jump up joints and jungle jams. "Demons" is all about the swaggering triplets and hornet's nest one note stabs, "Look" fusses up a sexy R&B vocal with a pant-dangling rolling groove that's not dissimilar to Break while "Feelings" maintains the high emotion levels but adds a more of grittier, sleazy funk swing. "Druggies" concludes proceedings with big jazzy pianos, a classic rap sample and plenty of twisted cowbell clanging. Just say yes.

Review: Is it you? Is it your neighbour? Is it your mum? Still no one knows who Dawn Wall is (or are) but we know we're cruising point blank towards an album. Here are four more reasons to look forward to it; "Twin Falls" rolls with the anonymous artists' signature piano lulls and a hazy vocal sample. Simple, soulful, bliss. "Mantis" hits a little harder with warm insistent key strikes, a groaning bassline and some interesting textures fluttering overhead while "Holding On" flexes a Gill Scott vocal and Think Break with guitar glistening perfection. Finally "Marina" takes us out to choppier oceans where the seas and keys are notes of deep blue. The mystique continues...

Review: It would be fair to say that Macc and Loz Contreras have made something a splash in the D&B scene since first joining forces back in 2013. It's also true that few contemporary producers are capable of delivering such musically rich, soul-flecked liquid funk. Their trademark sound - rolling breaks, sparkling electronic, carefully selected samples and melodies aplenty - is much in evidence throughout this fine debut album, which gathers together both previously released singles and previously unheard fare. Highlights come thick and fast, from the disco-sampling dancefloor bliss of "Better World" and the sun-soaked brilliance of bass-heavy carnival roller "Wanna Be Your Lover", to the sub-heavy assault that is "Switch". A handful of remixes from other artists - including liquid soul mate S.P.Y - complete a quality package.

Review: Astrophonica kicks off 2017 with the sounds that have driven the label forward over the past five years. Gradients is the label's first compilation and brings together its small but powerful roster with a string of close friends and allies, giving prominence to both well-known names - dBridge, DJ Earl, Stray, Om Unit (under his Philip D Kick guise) and newcomers such as Lewis James, Tusais, Touchy Subject and Tehbis. This is a glorious celebration of Astrophonica's growth, as well as its stylistic roots and forward thinking ethos. Each of the 13 tracks have been tested in the clubs over the past year to ensure an all killer/no filler experience. Respect!

Review: BANG: Kre and his mates are back and it's more of the same absolute filth we've come to expect from the young UK bass flexor. "Shutdown" sees him teaming up with Multi-Function affiliate Freek for a crucial tech-edged riff that swathes through the mix like a samurai. Unadulterated chaos. "Toronto Blues" sees him teaming up with longstanding collaborator Basshoven for more of a groove-based funk-up that's laced with the twisted, menacing undertones the pair have excelled in previously in the past. Watch out for the breakdown as well... It'll leave you black and blue.

Review: Dynamic duo Wickaman & Mavrick return with another one of their illicit under the counter romps. Firstly getting to grips with an iconic Peggy Lee hook. Something that you wouldn't necessarily expect to sit well with furious jungle beats but fear not as the blend is seamless and the timeless vocal accompanies beats so snappy they could give ravers whiplash and a bassline that has more wobble than James Corden's midriff as he drives over a pothole. Flipside "Kill em with your know" is inspired my Mr Vegas' advisory anthem Heads High and the carnival vibes are ramped up even further by the crisp jungle beats and dubwise bassline. No ifs no buts Jungle Strikes are the party starters!

Review: One for the new school heads and the Jungle purists alike here as scholar of the jungle spectrum DJ Cautious takes timeless dancehall vocals and shifts them up a gear. Four riddims that sound like they were made with the Fortress stage at Beat Herder festival in mind. From the legendary vocals of Cham to the cross, angry bars of Bounty Killer; Cautious layers and reinforces to construct a furious jungle flex. Fellow west midlander and jungle veteran Jinx is on the remix to offer his own perspective on the "Ghetto Story". This one has got us itching for summer now, not long left!

Review: Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distills the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles' playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps. The compilation is now in its twelfth release and there's some real gems on this edition: just some of the highlights are: the soothing inner city blues of Selbeyone's "Are You In Peace?", Kathy Hoskins and the legendary Paul Randolph's magical soul excursion "Could You Be Me?" (channeling the vibe of Roy Ayers' Ramp project) or The Pendletons with the wonderful "Gotta Get Out" which will give you your funky acid nu-jazz fix, for sure.

Review: London drum and bass imprint Heavy Goodz has long been the home of elusive Essex drum and bass producer Illfigure. After all, he does run the label, innit! On Revisited, like the name might suggest, he brings back some of his secret weapons from his back catalogue for another proper rinse out. "Duck Hunt" for instance has that real early noughties quirky vibe that Hype and Zinc were throwing down at the time, "hater" has that gnarly darkside tech-step aesthetic happening similar to Virus Recordings' finer moments until his collaboration with Kre "1000lb Bass" (feat Clarkson) hammers the message home in minimal jump up fashion that'd make even DJ Krust stand up and notice.

Review: When it comes to no-nonsense, heads-down techno, few labels can match Bek Audio. While it has released material by Chicago legends DJ Rush and Lester Fitzpatrick, as well as Mark Broom and Slam, for its 30th release its owner, Gary Beck is back in the saddle. The title track is an unstoppable juggernaut that comprises a driving funk-bass, disco loops and sassy vocal samples. "Shadow Bounce" is more typical Beck, with a hammering central rhythm undercutting a noisy riff and a choppy vocal stab. "Bicycle Wheel" sees the Scottish producer deliver a lighter, party techno looper, while expect the catchy vocals and loopy funk of "Fantasy Stomp" to compete with "Famoo Funk" for attention.

Review: Lauer and Gerd Janson aka Tuff City kids emerged with "Tell Me" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals back in late 2016 on Permanent Vacation, but now it's time for the remixes and they're pretty sweet on this EP; if we do say so ourselves. Hamburg's finest Tensnake is in fine form as always with his rendtion: a tropical nu-disco explosion! Joe Goddard himself chips in too with a makeover of the track; his one getting some emotive Kompakt vibes going on full of rich and life affirming synths leads happening. After all, he has recently collaboarated with Michael Mayer. Finally they save the best for last with the mighty Roman Fluegel delivering the "Happy Gerdy remix" which very uplifting indeed.

Review: Paper Recordings comes through with the absolute goods; a compilation that many true-school house heads wound dream of, especially to own it on digital formats. This is the Northern Disco Lights compilation, a total treasure chest of Scandinavian house jams that are going for serious amounts of money on the second-hand market. In short, this is your chance to own these beauties and mould them into your sets. Inside, you'll find timeless tunes from the likes of the great Bjorn Torske, Doc L Junior, and even the dearly missed Erot with the stone-cold classic "Song For Annie". But, there's more; Biosphere appears with that inimitable drone flair, and even Todd Terje features proudly, as per usual. An absolutely essential release. Warmly recommended.

Review: Alexander Pietnev aka Ponty Mython, is originally from Russia but is currently settled in Vilnius, Lithuania. He had his very first release in 2012 on Beats Delivery which gave a solid impression of what was to come. He went on with outings on Tusk Wax, Arma, Dirt Crew and of course Quintessentials. This was originally released on the Quintessentials 50 compilation; it's "Grooff Machine" and it gets some remix treatment from some more 'dope grooffs' (label's words, not ours!). Chicago hotshot Chrissy (The Nite Owl Diner, Classic, Razor n' Tape) throws some sick and gnarly 303 acid business over this loopy disco number. Review: It's the third edition of Cabin Pressure Recording's Shedits series, which means we're involved with Daytoner laying down some utter truth in the form of blissfully raw dance edits spanning everything from 60s soul to 90s trip hop. "Apache Street" features that mythical break in action amid some ludicrously addictive singing, while "Moonstomping" goes off on a little ska trip, "Feel It" provides us with a gorgeous example of UK 90s house at its most break-heavy, and "I Feel It Like That" is the sexy sister of the bunch, a seductive soul excursion tailor made for the lovers. Bliss.

Review: Talamanca System are the unlikely trio of Gerd Janson, Phillip Lauer of Tuff City Kids and International Feel boss Mark Barrott. Their sole release in late 2014 became one of the best selling on the Iabel's imprint. My Past Is Your Future brings them back together for a trio of magical productions that harness the power of their production skills and winks at a forthcoming album coming on the imprint this summer. Its' deep balearica cum ambient house on the wonderfully ethereal "My Past Is Your Future" and in proper ambient style there's a truly wonderful "Beatless Stars In Space" mix which is perfect for drifting. Finally the "Chukka Chukka Dance Mix" has Tuff City Kids written all over this this neon-lit retro house mix which is just totally off the hook in its own right!

Review: DJ duo Audiojack return to their Gruuv label with a killer house release. The title track is a classic deep affair; based on a wiry but driving rhythm and rasping percussion, it features sensuous melodies and a ponderous, seductive female vocal. "On The Road" is closer in sound to classic 20/20 Vision, with the pair deploying a detuned riff and an organ sequence over a tough, driving rhythm. Reset Robot turns "Senses" into a deep techno track, with chiming chords and a linear groove underpinning the original version's vocal sample, while on the Dubspeeka version of the same track, a more understated, stripped back approach prevails.

Review: Jimpster has a new album on the way - his seventh in total - so has decided to serve up this tantalizing taster of what's to come. "Crave", featuring the quietly soulful vocals of Florence Rawlings, is an exercise in sumptuous, musically rich dancefloor deep house in which the Freerange co-founder can showcase his admirable composition and production skills. Khalil Anthony adds his slick vocals to the chunkier and more bass-heavy richness of "Where You Are", which recalls his appearances on Thatmanmonkz's superb Columbising full-length. Meanwhile, the EP also boasts two remixes of "Crave": a wonderfully soulful, tech-tinged shuffler from Atjazz and a rolling, analogue-rich interpretation full of bubbly electronic flourishes by D.KO co-founder Flabaire.

Review: Fresh from his recent excursions on Ghetto Dub & Deep In The Jungle; Barcelona badman Sound Shifter embarks on another mystic journey of bass and drum , this time on Papa Gee's high risk imprint Hazardous Musik. DJ Hybrid is on the remix for opening track "Danger & Culture" and it is a real plot twist as soulful Calibre style piano chords burst into rib rattling kicks and spine tingling jungle drum fills. Next up it is the VIP of title track "Stronger than me" Hazy lounge piano and vocals on the intro breaks into a serious shuffle as Sound Shifter makes use of the famous Sugar Hill Gang that was immortalized in jungle folklore by Shy FX on Bambaata. "Take Me Higher" is our pick of the bunch as the euphoric old school vocals blend with a sustained surging bassline to make an addictive liquid stepper. The whole release is peppered with sirens and samples that now, with over 20 years of jungle music, you might expect to sound played-out or cliched... No chance! They still sound so good, raising the energy levels to fever pitch. 3 tracks with 3 very distinct flavours that all work wonderfully.

Review: For the third volume in his consistently superb AOR Global Sounds compilation series, Charles Maurice has largely opted to showcase tracks that combine West Coast rock flavours with disco and soul influences. It's a heady and intoxicating collection, where the blue-eyed soul/jazz-funk fusion of "Girl" by Stratus rubs shoulders with the horn-heavy, electrofunk era AOR cheeriness of Willy Santana's "Mais Uma Chance" and the '80s soul smoothness of Omega Sunrise's "Heartbreaker". Other highlights include the rubbery boogie bass and Steely Dan guitar passages of Billy Always' "More Than A Minute" and the drowsy warmth of Jon Konteau's synth-laden "The Heckler", which comes on like the Steve Miller Band jamming with Moon B.

Review: It's a perfect match; the dubwise sonic filter of L NIX is perfectly suited to what Iron Shirt Recordings have been focusing on for quite some time, and it makes this one of those releases that feels painfully right from the first moment it landed on our charts. The opening "Stumbles" lays out a clear and effective blueprint for the sort of shady, heavily moody bass vibes that follow on the subsequent 9 slabs of heartical drum-beating and hertz-morphing. "The Rift" is another peak moment on here, its stepping dub breaks guided by the subtle rap poetry of Ramai Lama, not to mention the grainy picture painted by "Viceroth", or the cold, ear-shaking artillery of percussion that's unleashed on "Bandits". If you like you step to be on the heavily dubby side then look no further than this sublime slice of dance sci-fi.

Review: Mad Mats and Tooli have decided to celebrate five and a half years of their much-loved Local Talk label by gathering together a swathe of fresh cuts that best represent the label's eclectic approach to house music. It's a fine set, moving from the electric bass driven jazz-house of Art Of Tones' "Violation" to the UK garage influenced deep house skip of Hugo LX, via the rich, soulful house warmth of Sean McCabe, the synth-laden Herbie Hancock-isms of DJ Spinna and the celebratory disco-house heaviness of S3A's "Bob Morton". Chuck in superb contributions from Bodhi Satva, Simbad (as SMBD) and newcomer Marcel Lune, and you have a near essential collection of feel-good house moments.

Review: Los Angeles imprint Soul Deep has established itself as one of the hottest labels bringing quality drum and bass from the west coast and globally. Featuring a talented array of artists with a diverse sound, Soul Deep is committed to releasing timeless songs that satisfy the soul. Label head honcho Scott Allen returns with his latest offering "After All", a deep, liquid, jazzy and atmospheric number that is reminiscent of classic Marcus Intalex or Good Lookin Records stuff. Next up, Paul SG gets on the remix and thankfully its not too radical a departure; it retains all the emotive qualities of the original but with an added bounce in the bassline and heck of a lot more roll in the rhythm.

Review: Spanish producer Valentin Corujo knows how to get a groove on. On his latest release as Kessell - this time on Developer's label - he drops five killer dance floor tracks, each one as functional as the next. The first "Ecliptica" revolves around the kind of nocturnal bass that sounds inspired by Suburban Knight, while the second one is metallic and stripped back, but undercut with an acidic flavour. Number three is tough and pushing towards the edge of distortion thanks to its grainy kicks and noisy filters, while on the fourth version is slightly more reserved and sees Corujo draw on the spacey end of Sandwell District for inspiration. Closing the release is the fifth instalment, a rolling, hypnotic track that draws on loop techno's legacy but deploys these sensibilities in a visceral setting.

Review: Bruck out and gwarn bad! Up and coming producer Abzzy has new artillery to test your subwoofer's capabilities. Having released recently on Garage stalwarts Four40 & U Wot Blud, breakbeat innovators Hot Cakes Bass makes an intriguing home for his latest offering. However the new stable makes total sense when you hear the moody low pass filtered amen breaks breakdown on the intro for "The Gyaldem". The drop hits so hard you would think it was intravenously administered, screw face inducing 4x4 Garage. The formula is the same on the flipside "The Hunt" as intermittent bars from vocal talent Patch Edison pepper what is a punishing bassline.

Review: Nocturnal Activity was released by Mark Rae on Manchester's Grand Central Records, an independent record label back in 2002. It is a remix album, composed of alternative mixes of the tracks from the Sleepwalking LP, plus one new track, a cover version of the Parliament track "Flashlight". It contains some of the labels most sought after tracks. For the dancefloor, The Nextmen remix of "It Aint Nothin Like" is considered a classic. Atjazz turns in a magical remix with Kate Rogers on "Not Just Anybody". Groove Armada went on a weekend break to a country house to flip the Pharcyde's Booty Brown on "Let It Go". However the best is left to last with the fully acoustic version of "Get A Life" with soul legend Bobby Womack.

Review: Boston's AXH is increasingly in the spotlight when it comes to deep, raucous dubstep vibes and, perhaps because he's from the other side of the pond, his material just seems to have something fresh and alluring about it - not to hype it up or anything! After a killer appearance on London's TEMPA not too long ago, the bad badboy runs two new dope tunes on the impressive Duploc imprint. "Witch doctor" blows a menacing, cosmic array of bass tones over a dismantled percussion beat, slamming all over the place like it's 2006, while "Lionart" takes some inspiration from the ragga school of thought in delivering its dutty, wobbling swarm of bass over deep, mystical roots vibes. Heavy.
