In some ways, Dust shows that Scottish producer Alex Smoke values consistency over innovation. The title track contains the same slurred, melancholic vocals as early gems like "Don't See The Point". However, in other regards, Smoke has moved on. The title track features a complex polyrhythmic groove and a wobbly bass that twists and turns in and out of the arrangement, while Tessela's version is even more idiosyncratic. Featuring bursts of drum'n'bass percussion and a tearing, half-speed bassline that keeps on just the right side of distortion; it steals from the past to reclaim the future. Finally, Smoke returns to organic percussion and rickety rhythms for the atmospheric, introspective "Ruction Dub".
