Review: Having brought us such singles as "The City" not so long ago, Author - the collaborative project between Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin - reaches a climax with the release of this self-titled LP on Pinch's Tectonic Recordings. An eight-track venture into dubstep's unchartered quarters, opening track "Turn" feat. Ed Thomas pairs sonorous vocals with a hypnotic soundscape, and draws us in to other tracks such as the deeply beautiful "Green & Blue" feat. Ben Glass and "Dashiki", which recalls the pattering percussion of label boss Pinch's "Qawaali" or "The Boxer". Elsewhere there's the thunderous "Mothership" with its punishing subs and pelting drums, as well as the soothing, sultry rhythms of grand finale "Drain". Superb.

Review: A new name on Tectonic, Author (Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin) makes a bold statement of intent with this superb single on Pinch's label. "The City" is a brilliant balls-out dancefloor track with pounding syncopated drums, shuffling rhythms, grinding bass and buckets of energy. Layers of synths add just the right amount of euphoria to the weighty bass heavy undercurrent. Accompanying this is "Teacher", which is perhaps more characteristic of the Tectonic sound - deep, dark, oily basslines weave around a crackling reggae vocal sample and the occasional cowbell chime. Superb from start to finish, we await the forthcoming Author album with great anticipation.
