Review:
There's something strangely eccentric about the musical world of Belbury Poly, AKA electronic musician Jim Jupp. Influenced by a typically English combination of Radio Workshop-ish synthesizer experimentation, whimsical folk-rock, forgotten library music, 60s psychedelia and 70s kitsch, Jupp's music drunkenly veers between the quaint and the unusual. Yet as this fifth album on his own Ghost Box imprint shows, when he gets it right it can be a heady combination. In the wrong hands, such kitsch experimentation - complete with sleeve imagery of a sleepy English village - could be a bit too kitsch, but Jupp pulls it off - even when veering off into lounge-pop territory.
