Mystery - (5:42)
from $1.49
Review: Biome's been making more frequent appearance on Macabre Unit, and he's struck gold several times over. "Black Widow" looks set to be one of his biggest to date. A pulsating, bouncing-ball bass runs amid the stark half steps that gradually develop a polyrhythmic mind of their own. "Quasar" is stripped back further again with a trippy kick that pounds a mean message directly into your temples. You can't fight it; the incessant hand drum loop will drive you into a shamanic state before you know it. "Mystery" is the hype track of the trio. Bordering into dancehall techno territory with another nagging hand drum loop, this is one relentlessly trippy beast.

Review: Biome's on a serious roll right now. Countering his recent grumpy, techno-minded EP Black Widow with three shimmering sonic gems, Deep Heads Vol 10 is a triumph of versatility. "Light" shuffles us through a sweet, deep dream, whispering sweet waspy bass nothings in our ears. "Havana VIP" flips the VIP cliche and instead of making it ruder and stronger, it takes his 2011 trouble-wobbler into a much more sub-aquatic, contemplative pasture. "Nightscape" finishes the set on a naked, mystic note with occasional splashes of crystal pianos. Classic Biome.

No Soul (Soulful edit) - (6:29) 140 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Kicking things off with the murky sounds of "Havana" Biome's excellent entry into the Dubstep For Deep Heads series builds from a stripped back, eerie intro into the main tune with its dragging beats, humming bassline and razor sharp SFX. Next is an even more extraordinary piece; "No Soul" featuring lyrics from Fox (who we have recently seen collaborate with Dub Phizix in his recent release on Critical) which blends thick, heavy atmospherics with a swaggering beat and warping mid range. The soulful edit, which completes the EP, draws out the lush, blissed out vocal of the original and brings it into the fore.

Future Past - (7:31) 140 BPM

Review: Eastern horns and dubstep really ought to get married - they work so well together. Of course some partnerships are better than others, but when the good vicar Biome marries them up, it is a match made in heads down heaven. Seriously, there's nothing about "The Prayer" that won't drive your dance insane. The oxymoronic "Future Past" is more your classic Dubstep For Deep Heads fare with a well-paced sense of halfstep drama and a cold, clinical eeriness echoing throughout. Biome really can do no wrong right now.

Review: Two razor sharp cuts here from Biome which traverse the dubstep genre with great aplomb, employing lacerating drums and weighty sub bass rumbles throughout. Kicking things off with "Minus", which builds gradually with thumping drum kicks, grinding b-line and plenty of menacing SFX echoing in the darkened soundscape. This rolls along with intimidating swagger for the duration before we move on to its counterpart "Moody", all crackling noise on the intro and enormous, snapping snares and bubbling bass for the main part. Heavyweight dubstep business.

Review: Biome continues his consistent prolific output this year with a debut on Z Audio's On The Edge series. Naturally it's a neat selection as he flips through his portfolio of techniques... "Shaman" really lives up to its name with a complex, hypnotising rhythm that will lock your floor in tightly and never let go until they reach the ultimate spiritual enlightenment. "The Road" is deeper and more psychedelic but equally as inspiring thanks to well laced tabla textures and dreamy synthwork. "Formation" finishes the set with a whole new side to Biome; a pumping 4/4 joint it steals colours and techniques from the psy-trance and techno palates with flare and panache.

Chosen - (7:32)

Review: Biome never seems to leave the Macabre Unit Digital stable at the moment. The big question is... Is he there out of choice? Or are they keeping him prisoner because he's such a good producer? It happens all the time: when producers make such rich, dark, textured pensive riddims as Biome, they're prime victims for label kidnap. They're kept in reasonable conditions - a studio with plenty of biscuits and pop - but the label never let them out for fresh air. That way the music gets darker and moodier... like these two cuts. Supreme in their menacing make up - "Pariah" for its molasses-like bass and "Chosen" for its techno-style kickdrum shifting - these are strong signs that the label are holding Biome kidnap. But with beats this good? We'll turn a blind eye if you will...

Space by Biome on Black Box Cue Track
Space - (5:36) 140 BPM Biggest-selling track on this release
from $1.49
Review: Black Box continue their limited offshoot series with this epic track from Manchester's Biome. With heavy rotation on Rinse FM, "Space" is already rattling speaker stacks across the globe with its super deep subs and minimal beats. Cinematic pads and tinkling pianos are played off against spacey fx and tonnes of slowly mutating bass frequencies. Going deeper than a trawler's anchor, Biome retains the musicality but loses none of the impact. The true sound of dungeon dubstep.

Conscience - (8:30)

Review: More commonly found throwing down dubstep variations, Biome indulges his techno side on this appearance for adventurous Manchester imprint Mindset. "Spawned" is a minimal cut of the most stripped order, focusing on finely honed layers of relentless rhythm that sport a depth that belies the producer's dubstep roots. "Driveway" is more animated, working snatches of melody, bass grind and haunting pads into a dextrous mixture, while "Conscience" heads into a more mellow territory with a half step beat and lingering melodics of a more soundtrack-friendly persuasion. It's a diverse EP that displays the versatility this accomplished artist has under his command.

Review: Biome's previous platters are full of ominous sonic shadows. As great as they've been, it's always refreshing to hear an artist flip the switch. Like "Swan", a true spectrum of studio shades, each one of them crisp and sparkling with well produced light. Emotive, uplifting and loaded with unidentifiable warm warped bass tones, it's a new chapter for this ever-reliable newcomer. As ever with Smokin Sessions, there's a fine remix as Versa takes the heart-stroking chords, adds a subtle two-step and gets all daydreamy in melody land. Beautifully deep, this is a hallmark release for both Biome and Smokin Sessions.

Review: It's becoming more and more apparent throughout 2012 that Biome isn't human. He's a blooming machine! There's not been a month this year when he hasn't delivered at least one deep, pensive slice of darkness, be it on Macabre Unit, Smokin Sessions, Osiris or New Moon. Back on the ever-reliable Blackbox he's served up something of a bumper package. Five tracks in total, his balance of stark atmospherics and gruff subs is in full effect. The delicate shades of piano and synth-laced light of "Inner Mind", the subtle croaks and groans of the EP's title track "Two Way", the intricate tribal drum patterns and woozy pads of "First Light"... Biome's production line is running more efficiently than ever. Machine music has never sounded so good.
