Review: Meet the ultimate palmtop recording studio. Only slightly larger than an ipod, the tiny, yet powerful Micro br is dream for musicians on the go. The Micro br offers four simultaneous playback tracks, an sd card slot, onboard multi-effects, built-in rhythm patterns, a tuner, mp3 compatibility, usb, and more. It measures at just 136.0 mm x 81.0 mm x 21.4 mm (5-3/8" x 3-3/16" x 7/8"). At its core is a four track studio with four simultaneous playback tracks and two simultaneous record / input tracks. However, there is a lot more to this recorder than meets the eye. The drum patterns do not consume any of the four playback tracks - they play back independently. Secondly a quality multi-effects processor is built into the unit for enhancing your recordings and for creative experimentation. Amp modelling, compressor, delay... They're all here. And if you want to change the tempo of your mp3 audio without changing pitch (great for phrase training), you can apply the 'time stretch' effect to audio file playback. In addition, the 'centre cancel' feature can be applied to audio file playback, which helps minimize the vocal or lead-guitar track on pre-recorded songs for play-along style practice or performance. There are no moving parts inside the Micro br - it's a road-tough, memory-card-based digital recorder. The recording media of choice is the internationally recognized sd card, which can be used to save all your sessions on to. The included 128mb card, for example, can record approximately 65 minutes of audio with one mono track selected. And even though it's a shrimp, the Micro br packs an entire studio worth of features into its tiny case. There are a dozen buttons on its front panel and even a built-in microphone for quick capture when the need for recording on location arises. No guitar case or gig bag should be without one!

The RC-3 provides 3 hours of stereo recording capacity direct to internal memory. Now you can record long phrases without worrying about memory. 99 memory locations let you save as many phrases or ideas as you can create. Guitarists who want to incorporate external stereo effects devices will appreciate the true stereo I/O on the RC-3.

The auto recording feature starts recording the moment you begin playing your guitar, or as soon as you start a connected audio player. Count-In mode gives you one-bar of rhythm before recording starts. You can undo/redo as you go. The sky's the limit with 3 hours of recording time.

To keep your loops tight and in time, you can play along with one of the basic rhythm patterns in the RC-3's onboard library as you record. 10 types of rhythm types are provided, including rock, pop, funk, shuffle, R&B and latin. A dedicated knob lets you adjust the volume of the rhythm, and you can set the tempo incrementally or via tap tempo. You can also specify the time signature. When you save a phrase, the rhythm type and time signature will also be saved.

You can connect the Boss RC-3 to your computer via a standard USB cable, and back up your RC-3 recordings to your computer for safekeeping. You can also load WAV files from your computer directly into the RC-3. The RC-3 accepts 16bit/44.1 kHz WAV files of up to 1.7 GB in size.

In addition to recording your guitar or bass performances and turning them into playable loops, you can also record other external stereo audio sources via the RC-3's AUX input. Sound from a digital-audio player connected to the AUX input, for example, can easily be recorded and made into a loop.

You can plug in your instrument of choice, or even a microphone; an XLR input is provided, complete with phantom power. Record for up to 3 hours direct to internal memory, adding effects as you go. The USB 2.0 port lets you save your loops externally and import/export WAV files.
