Review: Known as a fierce collector of hip-hop, funk soul and much more, DJ Chris Read has not only represented 1Xtra but has also curated compilations for BBE in the past. That weight of musical knowledge passes nicely into his studio work, as this latest double-tracker for Breakin' Bread shows. With afrobeat to the fore, "Sons D'Afrique" is an addictive mix of beats, boogie bass, African guitar licks and billowing brass, with a simple joyous vocal and chant wafting gently through the tune. "Dub D'Afrique" as you'd expect breaks out the echo effects for a deeper and driving alternative which makes great use of a floating flute part as well as some fine bass and drum work.
