Death On The Balcony At Juno Download

Review: British production duo Death On The Balcony seems to have been exceptionally productive in recent years. Amazingly, this is their 12th single release since 2009. EP opener "The Colour That You Bring To Me" is typical of their style, offering just the right balance between deep house chops, AOR pop-influenced synth melodies and a touch of gritty analogue nu-disco. The fluid "Shade I Bring To You" is noticeably darker, with big room riffs nestling side by side with Maceo Plex-ish grooves. Nick Monaco delivers a retro-futurist, break-laden old skool jam on his Shades of '93 mix of "The Colour That You Bring To Me", while Edit Murphy goes all trippy and deep on his chunky mix of "Shade I Bring To You".

Review: An impressive four-tracker from this superb Leeds deep disco duo, "Join The Dots" sees the pair recall fellow boogie-influenced house acts a la Wolf & Lamb and Soul Clap with fantastic washes of jacking digital funk. Look out in particular for the beautifully sparse closer "Visions" - a swirling textured house gem if ever we heard one.

Review: Death On The Balcony and Moustache Mamas join forces to launch Hissy Fit, a brand new label dedicated to the continuing blurring of boundaries between deep house and disco. DOTB's opener "Everytime" is a great example of how to successfully marry the two genres. Cheekily ripping phrases from a classic synth-boogie vocal cut, it delivers the perfect balance between heady house hedonism and woozy late night disco. Moustache Mamas' "21 & Lewis" tiptoes further towards nu-disco territory, successfully including some neat old skool house touches to guarantee saucer-eyed dancefloor delight. DOTB closer "Gimme That Stuff" completes a killer package via warm chords and seriously rubbery synth bass.

Review: Yam Who?'s ISM label come through with a four track slice of disco centric Futurism, featuring the man Yam himself alongside PBR Streetgang and Ron Basejam. It's the latter who takes the lead with a remix of Alena's "Changes" that sees her sultry vocal teased by a most excellent of analogue synth leads that splurges brilliantly across the crisp mid tempo chug. Yam Who? teams up with vocalist Natasha Watts for the similarly bottom heavy bump of "I'm In Love" which has a certain warehouse appeal to it. Up next, PBR pay respect to the godfather of soul James Brown with the gritty flex of "J2thaB" with the sadly departed Mr Brown strangely sounding at times like he wants to go to Tesco. We always took him for a Waitrose man, but regardless this is probably the track you'll reach for most! Finally Brothers Young do their thing to a Trammps classic, with little more than the bassline retained. Big tip!
