Review:
The LA beatmaking scene continues to spawn artists committed to the leftfield potential of post hip-hop MPC work. Elos is the latest alumni to make the step up to Daddy Kev's local label, Alpha Pup. This debut album is in many ways typical of the post Flying Lotus LA sound - all woozy, off-kilter beats, warped melodies, glitchy electronic sounds and booming basslines. Elos' beat programming is impressive, his sounds authentically vintage (think old analogue synths put through a blender) and his approach undeniably forthright. This combination makes Scenes of Life/Electricity a rewarding listen, even if it's at times a little skittish. Yet with picturesque cuts like "Feefa" in his armoury, Elos looks set to go far.
