Review: St Etienne Vol 1 marks the debut of French producer HateLate. The title track is something of a love letter to the city of the same name - his hometown, of course - offering a near 10-minute trip into ultra-deep house territory. Loose jazz cymbals, bluesy, St Germain style horns and tear-jerking pianos ride the kind of thickset groove that appears swinging and off-kilter, but still packs a serious punch. It actually sounds like a 21st century update of some of the material from St Germain's legendary Boulevard set, which is no bad thing. "Bellevue" is dustier, breezier and, if anything, a little looser, with rich Rhodes chords gathered around hustling percussion. As debuts go, it's rather impressive.

Review: St Etienne-based HateLate has delivered some of the most impressive releases on Ondule Recordings to date. This is his third outing for the label, and adds a little more low-end grunt to his swinging drums and melodious deep house textures. He begins with the energetic dancefloor bump of "The Buzz" - all sweaty drums and drowsy lead lines - before expertly chopping up warm bass, chiming melodies and fizzing cymbals on the impressively restless "Loop & Dance". The rich, minor key chords return on the off-kilter deep house swing of "Luv Ritual", before he doffs a cap to classic disco house on the wonderfully low slung, bass-heavy thump of "Backroom '84".

Review: St.Etienne's Hatelate is quickly extending France's sublime house tradition, taking influence from greats such as Motorbass, I:Cube and D'Julz. His second EP drops on Gourmand Music Recordings, a prolific label dealing specifically in house music, in the form of a three-tracker backed by two remixes. "Ice Cream" is a stepping tech-house roller with hollow melodies and subtle disco nuances, deconstructed and jacked-up by JR From Dallas. "Chocolate" is deeper, jazzier and full of low-ends, followed by Nouskynousk's loose and clap-heavy reinterpretation. "Cheese Cake" ties things off with metallic percussion stabs, bumpy kicks and more of Hatelate's signature house swing. Top.

Review: Following up great releases by Joss Moog and Around7, French imprint Hatelate returns for St Etienne Volume 2. It's another series of love letters to his hometown, in the form of some luscious and dreamy deep house. "Bel Air" is rolling and funky with warm chords to get you in the mood. "La Terasse" is a slice of funky house reminiscent of the late nineties French Touch style. Finally Place Neuve" is a deep house DJ tool that's charm is in its dry and dusty nature and kind of reminiscent of Daniel Bell's old jams on Elevate.

Review: Having built his reputation via a string of dusty deep house EPs for Ondule Recordings, Hatelate is ready to unfurl his debut album. Predictably, it's something of a slow-burn delight, with the talented French producer supplementing his usual deep, dreamy, jazz-flecked and sample-heavy deep house workouts with a few pleasant surprises. These include the driving, funk-fuelled peak-time stomp of gritty bumper "Feeling Groove", the smoky slow jam "Introduction D'Acid Jazz", the superior, loopy disco-house thump of "Wanna Dance With Me" and the hybrid instrumental hip-hop/slow house head-nod of "Under Da Soul (Sunset Mix)". Of the numerous high-grade deep house workouts present, it's the epic, Chez Damier style "Chicago" that stands out.
