Review: In his own words, Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit created the Herman alias to showcase a new direction for the Toronto based producer with Prototype, this EP for Fine Art the first fruits. Very impressive it is too, with the title track offering a thumping bassline amidst a multitude of percussive kicks and grooves. Breakdowns are handled with the skill you would expect from Li, rolling particular elements to the fore with the hypnotic Detroit melody that slips through intermittently a particular highlight. "April Skies" sees an oscillating bass pattern play follow the leader with a mutating organ melody, each taking turns to shine over woodblock hats and a stepping percussive rhythm. Imagine a Martyn remix of Basic Soul Unit and you are halfway there. More please Herman!
