NANG 049
04 Apr 11 Disco/Nu-Disco
Review:
It's nice to see Cologne veteran Justus Kohncke turning up on decidedly shiny nu-disco imprint Nang. While something of a maverick -see his "pop ambient" releases and love of expansive, melodic noodling - you can't fault his more dancefloor-centric offerings. "Fussmachine" is another departure, a loose deep house groover that manages to fuse rumbling, low-end pressure, jazz-flecked beats and hustling organ stabs with a whisper of retro piano house chic. It's hard to accurately describe, to be honest, but it's certainly very good - and nowhere near as cheesily "big" as some of the elements suggest. Lasertom provides a superficial nu-disco rework for the Nang faithful, while "Renewal" trots off in a pleasingly spacious, stargazing direction.

Review:
The Stilove4music digital re-issue series continues apace, with a trio of edits-not-edits from German ambient pop noodler-cum-techno type Justus Kohncke. As you'd perhaps expect, Kohncke opts to use his source material as mere inspiration, offering up three loopy dancefloor bombs aimed more at house DJs rather than disco beards. The greatest example of this is "The Clock Keeps Turning", a sweltering "Good Times" cover that replays the famous bassline on a 303 and uses only a slither of the original vocal. "New Phreeq" takes a similar approach, whipping up a frenzy via a fat but fuzzy synth bass groove and occasional blasts of boogie vocal.
