Review: Norwegian producer Mathias Stubo is both a blue-eyed soul boy as well as a fan atmospheric, fusion jazz of the Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke variety. Such influences announce themselves instantly on his latest, self-titled album for BBE. The skittering snares of "Elevating" give way to the maximal digi-soul of "Soon A Brighter Day" and the chilled robo funk of "Let Time Pass". Unique and produced with a depth rarely heard on most new material, Stubo really takes nu-jazz forward here.

Review: Following up on his 2011 debut for BBE, 1979, futuristic disco and nu boogie producer Mathias Stubo uses Up In Smoke to both proffer some new songs and also drop a few remixes of key 1979 tracks. Newie "Those High Frequency Feelings" drops you straight into a cumbia disco zone, complete with dubby trumpets, while Jay Scarlett's mix of "Let's Go" is truly essential - a beautifully understated slo-mo and witchy delight which uses the innate funk of vocodered vocals to the max.
