Review: Derrick Thompson can usually be found blurring the boundaries between techno and house as Drivetrain, but Earthling sees the Detroit producer explore a more purist approach. The title track is a gloriously spaced out affair, its irresistible tapestry of bleeps and melodic chords voyaging to the outer reaches of dancefloor accessibility. Rennie Foster's Alien in Detroit version nudges the track back to the realms of the club, but its author's approach ensures that it isn't mere DJ fodder. Foster makes the original melody sound even lusher thanks to the use of subtle pads and the hip-hop scratching over the top adds some welcome irreverence to a sub-genre too often cloaked in seriousness.
