Pink Skull At Juno Download

Review: Having impressed with two hard-to-find albums of DFA-goes-Balearic alt-dance chicanery, Philadelphia act Pink Skull pop up on New York's ever-intriguing Rvng imprint with their third full-length. For newcomers, it's entertaining stuff, neatly showcasing their Holy Ghost-goes-to-the-White-Isle sound over the course of 13 cute and cuddly cuts. Keen followers will notice more of a reliance on vocals than previous outings, with post-punk doodlings being turned into fully formed, wall-of-sound songs ready for radio play. It's not a bad move. While it may not have the instant impact of their first two sets, Psychic Welfare is a much more rounded beast.

Review: Philly duo Pink Skull (aka Julian Grefe and Justin Geller) share In Flagranti's taste in hilariously outlandish titles - check out the track names on their 2nd album, Endless Bummer - and also a taste for spaced-out disco weirdness, as "Bee Nose" proves. A slo-mo affair, with synths fuzzed-up and EQ'd into destruction at times, it's fantastic head music - as is Brassica's remake (which sounds like chopped and screwed Balearica) and Riley Ace of Spies epic, post-rock monster of a mix. Very cool stuff indeed.
