Simon Off At Juno Download

Review: Without being harsh, the world of UK funky isn't known for its complex aural palette or innovative approach to track composition. That's not to say that there aren't people pushing the boundaries - see the Local Action label for proof - but too often releases fall into the "tried and tested" category. This EP from Simon Off bucks that trend by offering three differing cuts that owe just as much to classic Detroit techno or IDM as UKG. All three tracks bristle with futuristic intent, gazing skywards whilst retaining enough bottom end bounce to keep dancefloors happy. Of the three tracks, it's lead cut "Planetary Communications" that most impresses, if only for its sly wink to classic Global Communications productions. Highly recommended.

Review: Forward-thinking Austrian bass label Disko404 invite Simon/Off on board for some party-minded fun. A unique blend of garage, house and acid, "Take It Back" pumps with a Euro groove, jacks with a UKG sexiness and, thanks largely to the Todd Edwards style cut up vocal, swings with a US sassiness. "Just To" is vaguely more trad-garage but laced with a barbed Radioactive Man style attitude. The faultless Bass Clef finishes the set with a fractured remix that pitches the tempo and tone down to a level so rude it would make an angry drunk nun blush.
