A warm welcome back to Aussie funk/soul crew The Bamboos, who seem to have been off the radar since the release of 2010's Four. Here, they flip the script slightly on their fifth full-length proper for Tru Thoughts. While the rousing deep funk of old is still present, Lance Ferguson's crew have clearly broadened their horizons in the last two years. The result is their most attractive and well-rounded album to date. With regular vocalists and special guests (Aloe Blacc, most impressively) in tow, they dart attractively between dewy-eyed soul, Sly Stone-ish funk-rock (see "What I Know") and even country-tinged '60s soul groovery (the Tim Rodgers collab "I Got Burned").
