Tim Stoakes At Juno Download

Review: Croydon native Tim Lo-Fi Stoakes has long been obsessed with the raw, stargazing sounds of early British techno, particularly "Yorkshire bleeps and bass" ('bleep' for short). Here, he cheekily remakes Nightmares On Wax's 1990 Warp single "I'm For Real". Many of the same samples, vocals, alien bleep melodies and riffs are present, this time wrapped around a swinging groove and 808 style bass. Yet where the original track was sparse and raw, this is moody and atmospheric, thanks largely to the addition of sharp strings, moody chords and copious amounts of dub echo. As a result, "Ganja Poke Her" is a strange but endearing retro-futurist treat.
