WILL SAUL feat URSULA RUCKER
AIRFIX 024D
07 May 12 Breakbeat
Review:
Believe it or not, Will's original is actually seven years old now. A sultry, sombre roller, it featured on the end of his album Space Between and I very much doubt he expected it to keep on giving and giving. You can thank Air Recordings for this; first available with a brooding Evil Nine remix in 2006, now back with so many new leases of life it's nearby immortal. Pimpsoul leaves us in no doubt as to who's the nu funk party boss with his now trademark squidgy bass, Mr No Hands opts for a 20/80 techno breaks blend, Audited Beats pay homage to the depths and subtleties of Will's original while The Gaff tears up the favela with big beat gusto.

Review:
This year sees Aus boss Will Saul unveil the Closer project, a conduit for his long promised second album that's set for release on K7! and features contributions from the likes of Paul 'Tikiman' St. Hillaire, Scuba, Appleblim, Ewan Pearson and October. For this Aus release however, Saul collaborates with October, aka TANSTAAFL boss Julian Smith for the first time on "Light Sleeper" which sees Saul on synths and Smith on drums and makes for a pitch perfect distillation of their partnership with the track bristling in a manner similar to an insomnia riddled STL. Kompakt boss Michael Mayer is on remix duty, deftly balancing Saul and Smith's original sonic aspirations with his own creative urges - the results incorporating several broken rhythmic movements without sacrificing the warmth of the original production.

Review:
Simple reaches 50 releases with a veritable bang as label boss Will Saul teams up with irregular partner and studio whiz Tam Cooper on this bumper release backed with some killer remixes. Whilst the digital version doesn't retain the visual magic of the delightful double twelve inch vinyl edition that came with some serious design from the Build agency, the music bangs just as hard. "Hi Lo" stands out in particular and it might just squeeze into those end of year charts - all confident jets of shimmering melody and sub dynamism over a thumping rhythm. The accompanying remixes from Art Department and Sideshow twists "Hi Lo" inside out and create a whole new vibe, with the latter's rube boy attitude impressing. Elsewhere the hypnotic swagger of "Room In Your Heart" perfectly melds the rhythmic urgency of house music with the warm soulful sensation that Saul refers to often in interviews. Big tip!
