Review: DA10 boast a self-proclaimed 'genius' amongst their ranks and are named after 'a mythological piece of hardware with the power to fuse bouncing beats with powerful electronics'; at least the quality of the music lets them away with some of the pretentions. Recorded entirely on vintage hardware, this EP features five cuts that range from the tough beats and bleeps ("Redshift") to mellow synth-funk ("Respirator") via melancholy synthscapes peppered with light DnB percussion ("Out Of Reach Of Earth").

Review: In just over a year, Unknown to the Unknown have gone from humble beginnings to releasing material from Detroit legend DJ Stingray, Chicago heat from Marcus Mixx and Alias G, the rudest bassline garage from DJ Q and tracks from up and comers Slackk, Nightwave and Mista Men. But the genesis of the label can be traced back to a YouTube channel known as "DaAutopsy", where Hot City's DJ Haus still posts forthcoming UTTU hype and old vinyl rips to this day. Now the channel has taken on a life of its own, and spewed forth "Tear Tha Fuckin' Club Up!". Undoubtedly the hardest hitting UTTU joint to date, incandescent rave stabs go toe to toe with Baltimore club styles, creating a beast of a club track that resembles a Frankenstein's monster of the YouTube generation. Review: After breaking through in 2011 with releases for Keysound and Local Action, Damu has had a relatively quiet 12 months, focusing on collaborating with vocalists and refocusing his production efforts on a sterner, tougher, darker sound. As part of this, he has started a new eponymous imprint on which to release his productions, the first of which are presented here. "If You've Got Nothing To Hide" keeps the iridescent sheen of his earlier material, but constructs something altogether darker out of it, creating a thick bass style that is reminiscent of Boddika's electro excursions with an added helping of Eski grime, while "You've Got Nothing To Fear" throws ghetto vocals into its gelatinous mix of acid and brittle arpeggios.

Review: With two EPs on Local Action and Keysound already under his belt, Damu here delivers his debut long player for the latter imprint. As you would expect from a label as on point as Keysound, Damu brings something unique to the table with his brand of UK funky, combining expertly sampled R&B vocals and neon synths. But it's the after-hours vibe and organic rhythms that permeate his productions which really stands out, particularly in the complex and shimmering melodies of "Breathless" and piercing melancholy of "Don't Cry In My Bed". Most impressively however, is the range of genres and tempos which Damu turns his hand to; "Maths Is Fine for Some" evokes the swampy techno of Andy Stott, whilst "Waterfall of Light" and "Plasm" call to mind the freeform juke template of Machinedrum. Essential stuff.

Review: Cool Kid Music return with another silky collection of bass tracks, this time from rising talent Danglo. "Introverse" slows things right down, with a beat that is somewhere between R&B and downtempo deep house, nevertheless filling the gaps with crafty UKF snares, billowing synths and expertly treated vocals. "Liar Liar" offers a similarly relaxed cut, combining elastic Jacques Greene style synths with complex percussion. Finally, Werkha steps up to remix "Introverse", upping the tempo and making it more dancefloor ready with its deep dubstep style subs and intricate 4/4 rhythm.

Review: A commendable three-track EP from Dark Ages here on the Frite Nite label which focuses on a more stripped back sound with a dose of cheekiness added in for good measure. "Anansie's Revenge" kicks off with a series of clicking beats, hollow, echoing sounds and sci-fi sounding synths and develops into a low-slung number with murmuring bass below. "Ark Storm", up next, blends dramatic, sweeping synths with clinking melodies and bass squelches, while "Wrong Ghetto" brings the "First Born" EP to an end with simmering sub bass, quirky synth squeals and an ominous overtone from the off. Deep, dark and mysterious stuff.

Review: Having made waves with their 50Weapons EP last year, the Black Rainbows EP sees the trio's triumphant return to Black Acre. Opening with the sparse, stripped back rhythms of "F-Technology", razor sharp snare hits dovetail between cavernous bass hits to create the kind of dread-inducing atmospheres one associates with the label. "Tremor", meanwhile is all about those rough and tumble drums, while the sub bass groans of "Zoom" and neon-tinged roughness of "Totum" round off an unsurprisingly excellent package. There's nobody hitting that sweet spot between classic dubstep and contemporary garage styles quite like Dark Sky, and this is as excellent an example of their productions as you'll hear.

Review: With the ripples emanating from their bass music concoctions spreading ever wider, dynamic trio Dark Sky make the move to Tectonic to nudge that very label's remit into new territory. With their previous form on 50 Weapons and Black Acre amongst others, "Confunktion" sounds like a logical next step in limber but deadly accurate electro stylings. They don't lean on obvious tropes of the genre, bringing a more modern bass music slant to the synths and fully employing studio skills to make for an addictive, head-snapping beast of a track. "Double U" heads into a freakier domain defined by globulous synth drops and a tribal groove as fruity as it is funky.

Review: The Detroit-born producer now based in the United Arab Emirates has already been transmitted to the rest of the world through Civil Music, and Body delivers a full-length album to drag listeners head first into his dubbed out amalgamation of techno, house and bass music. Maverick methods abound, from tough swinging techno to beatless wonder, but all the way through Farah binds the wild ingredients together with a muggy tension that makes the album utterly engrossing. While the tempo and intensity switches between every track, there's an incredible consistency that holds the entire album together perfectly.

Review: Civil Music invite some high profile artists to revisit tracks from Body, the superlative debut album set from Darling Farah with the results every bit as good as the source. Given the arresting aesthetic of the album, subverting the stylistic traditions of house and techno in a truly rewarding fashion, there's naturally a lot of space for revision and you have to applaud label and artist for who they approached for the task. Baaqi's fellow Detroit native Jimmy Edgar tackles the title track and delivers a remix filled with the kind of 90s house motifs that his Hotflush boss has been revelling in of late. Elsewhere Lando Kal turns in a typically futuristic take on "Aangel", while Darling Farah provides his own live edit of the same track, and rising Parisian producer Bambounou delivers a darkly techno flavoured remix of "Fortune".

Review: Dauwd caused a bit of a stir earlier this year with a free digital EP released through Pictures Music, and now he gets his first release proper with What's There. The title track is characterised by its melodic approach to bass music, with elastic synths and water droplet sonics accented with minimal, clicky percussion. It's a deceptive track which unfolds itself gradually, hitting you between the eyes with its emotional climax. The other tracks don't disappoint either, with "Acireams" utilising a straighter 4/4 beat with a palette of warm synth textures and clipped samples. Perhaps the real gem is "Ikopol", with its golden tones and bright bell percussion in combination with its rich bass and house untertones is perhaps exactly what you'd imagine a collaboration between Four Tet and Martyn to sound like. An incredible debut from what looks set to be one to watch in 2012.

Review: Known for his incendiary DJ sets, complete with ghoulish mask, as well his appearance in the recent Fracture + Neptune release "Get Busy", Dawn Day Night continues to make his mark here with a self-titled EP on the aforementioned Fracture + Neptune's Astrophonica label. "Alcoholic Dance Flow" gets the party started with swirling beats, punctuated by spoken lyrics reverberating in the soundscape. "Death Of Scorpio" is another killer cut with a throbbing b-line and enticing intro, with dancing, skittish beats, whilst "Big Booty Girls" is another low slung killer with a sparse, dubbed out soundscape and echoing elements and quirky SFX, before "Voodoo Vibe" brings the EP to a close. Well worth checking out.

Review: Given his history of twisting D&B and dubstep into new shapes, we shouldn't really be surprised by anything Darren 'dBridge' White offers up musically. Even so, the two tracks showcased on this Convex Industries release see him far from his comfort zone. "Passing Encounter" is the real killer, a decidedly fluid offering that sits somewhere between contemporary deep house and two-step garage. Its bittersweet chords and weary female vocals deliver an emotional richness that's hard to ignore. "Scarlett", meanwhile, sees White in techno mode, offering a grungy groove full of clandestine atmospherics and snappy percussion.

Review: London via North Devon imprint Shifting Peaks are keeping the party pressure on with this bumper-packed EP. It's a label debut from duo De$ignated (Nima Bazrcar and Rory Bowyer) who split their time between London and Hampshire. Having garnered some major hype from a string of remixes, they've managed to secure Kyiki from Crystal Fighters for this, this own single. "Valentine" mixes fuzzy urban funk with old skool 2-step and half time breaks. "Russian Roulette" however is a much harder post-dubstep gurning banger. Best of the remixes is Kaveh's thumping acidic afterhours workout.

Review: Excellent release here from Deadboy on Glaswegian imprint Numbers, who returns to the imprint after dropping their first ever 12" in early 2010. The Brighton based producer serves up the epic "Wish U Were Here", which locks into a 4/4 pulse with euphoric Virgo-style synths and a deftly tweaked vocal snippet - solid end of night tackle right here! Up next you'll find "Here 4 U" and "Ain't Gonna Lie", with the former's rolling congas and snare patterns complemented by the latter's syrupy vocals, pinball percussion and straight up garage rhythms. Serious heat once again from the Numbers crew.

Review: A lynchpin in the underground dubstep scene, pioneering imprint Tectonic has always been at the forefront of the scene, pushing the core sound since the beginning. At its head of course is Pinch, whose discerning ear has led to many superb releases from artists new and old. This time it's over to new kid on the block Decibel, who impresses with this footwork-influenced four-track EP. Kicking things off is "GAP" with its low-slung booming bass, tapping beats and pitched down grunts; next is "MST" with its moody soundscapes, and warping SFX adding a disorientating twist to this techno inspired cut. "Miss" is all hissing percussive elements, twisted up synth work and glorious glitchyness, whilst concluding cut "Gyal" is a wonderful track with thumping beats, juddering SFX and pounding b-line below.

Review: This er, young kid (Tom Guerriero-Davies) from Nottingham, is tearing it up with this tune, getting plays on Rinse FM and more. Although he describes his sound as a variant of 2-step, it really doesn't do this tune justice. In fact it's a pretty hard record to categorise, other than it's a brilliant slice of haunting future tropical in which Della just rinses all the sounds, samples and riffs at his disposal to sound like, well, nothing else around. Remix-wise we also get quirky garage from Nomi and some seriously haunted house courtesy of AtsuBox.

Review: Helsinki's Desto has been releasing tunes for coming up to 10 years, but we've never had a long player from him...until now that is. "Emptier Streets" features 12 tracks that mine an evocative slow motion field. Highlights include the gentle, synth swathed "Dislocated", the Salem-esque dark trap of the title track, the beatless and cinematic "Drainpipe" and the sublime closer "Healing".

Review: One of the hardest working men in the Scottish dubstep-and-beyond scene, DFRNT brings forth a new EP for his own Echodub label. It features the hallmark plush melodies of an elegant nature that typify his output, although the more steppy refrains have been replaced by a sombre kind of techno on the title track. Normal business is resumed on "Work Harder" as a heavily swinging shuffle slices its way through engrossing swathes of synth, leaving it to the collaboration with Joy Dunlop to round matters off in a blissed-out haze on the wistful tones of "Homeward".

Review: Alex Cowles first unveiled his DFRNT moniker back in 2008, with an EP of deep, dubstep-influenced ambience and horizontal electronica. Having followed that up with an album and a multitude of singles for On The Edge, he returns to original Echodub with his second album, Fading. Those who've followed his career to date will feel right at home with its quiet, shuffling mix of blissful refrains, cozy samples and spacious grooves. While the bassy rhythms of dubstep remain a cornerstone of his outlook, there are also successful forays into dub techno, deep house and drone ambient territory, making Fading an engrossing listen.
