Review:
Bringing further evolution in the realm of footwork, one of the scene's heavy hitters DJ Earl drops this self-assured EP which lets a little heart and soul into the manic machinations of his chosen discipline. Opening track "I Feel It" embraces full-bodied vocals and warm melodies, while "I Need You" gets deep into a Rhodes refrain, all the while twitching away at the heightened BPMs of classic footwork. "Alive N' Well" goes as far as to reach for some chunky Detroit chords, while "Ambienttt" somewhat ironically represents the feistiest cut on the release with a more head-nagging refrain that seems more in line with classic Chicago juking.

A cursory listen to this EP would easily lead the listener to believe it was made by some underground British bass guy who wears his baseball caps sideways. But they'd be wrong; Klaves is actually 21 year old producer Mikolaj Gramowski from Poland who has pretty much beaten the British producers at their own game: "You" is an awesome blend of late 90s garage and house. "Hope It Gets To Love" is sassy future garage, and our fave is the Fault Lines remix - a slamming house scorcher featuring the kind of thumping kick not head since "Da Funk"!

Always a tricky customer to get a handle on, just when you think you know where James Connolly is headed with his release arc he swerves back the other way, from chart-testing pop-inflected jams to raw club destroyers. On this latest march on his Night Slugs stomping ground, Connolly is definitely looking to rock the dance but he's not holding back on the musical elements either. On "Not Mad" there's plenty of boogie flavoured synth flares to inject some colour into proceedings, while the title track gets into an almost Autechre-styled disposition with it's mechanical warmth conundrum. "Signal" manages to conjure a powerful blend of electro funk dynamics and sci-fi moods that it's very hard to argue with.

If you're an aspiring DJ or producer, naming yourself after one of the world's most popular club DJs might not prove such a smart move. But then again, with "Beat'n Down Yo Block", this other Tiga has delivered an impressive club banger that fuses epic string stabs, hype footwork rhythms and some great chant-a-longs. Across the further four tunes included we also get the bass-laden, italo-disco sampling trap of "Take Control", the stabby ghettotech of "Start It Up", booty bass -meets-70s flower child-isms of "Lovin You" and some head noddin' gangsta vibes on "Zip & A Double Cup".

It's been three years since Peverelist released anything on his own Punch Drunk label; of late his productions have come out primarily on the Livity Sound imprint he runs with Kowton and Asusu, or on Hessle Audio. Here he returns to Punch Drunk in triumphant form, using the truncated Pev name to drop two versions with fellow Bristolian Jacob Martin, best known for his solo productions as Hodge, and his work as one half of Idle Hands house duo Outboxx. Entitled Bells, the single sees two takes on the same track; given both Martin's house credentials and Ford's dubstep past and recent forays into slower rhythmic terrain it's no surprise that both tracks are steady, mid-tempo house imbued with Bristol's bass-weight heritage. "Bells (System Mix)" employs syncopated kicks and dub chords over its tunnelling bass, while "Bells (Dream Sequence)" is a more linear Chicago-inspired house cut with distant chimes and abstract synth textures, sounding not unlike some of the dreamier fare released on MOS Recordings.

Paradise Club regulars Juno Sutton, MTD and Dutty Dan are back with a new split EP. Firstly all three join forces for the driving UKF anthem "Block 123", which features a rolling bassline that destroys everything in its path. Sutton goes solo for the melodic and dreamy electro-house of "Get You" and the other two opt for the slammin' diva house-meets post dubstep of "Seeing Thoughts".

Leeds producer Debian Blak has been described as having a post-dubstep agenda with a sting in its tail. This time round though, he's eschewed the sting in favour of a sweeter pop sound, and to great effect too. Minimal and sensuous with a yearning female vocal from Neo Joshua, this is a contender for a number one in a perfect world. Remix-wise Lion Gonzalez stays close to the original, while HanC goes for sparse beats with retro synth stabs and pitched down vocals.

Volatil is a mysterious producer hailing from Barcelona. For his latest trick, he's conjured two pretty out-there, hard to define monsters: the title track, "Chaos Does Not Exist" is a remarkable combination of tribal techno, weird electronica and even the odd jazzy interlude. "This Is Music From The Past" is like a spaced out 90s rave track, with extra 808s and frenetic footwork rhythms.

Recently announced as the latest artist to trade Planet Mu for Ninja Tune, Machinedrum celebrates a four LP deal with the venerable UK label with a fresh drop for Fracture's Astrophonica label. One of the leading lights in 150bpm+ excursions, Astrophonica has been dominated by Fracture's own output - last year's The Limit VIP being a label highlight - though appearances from the likes of Om Unit demonstrate they do broaden their remit occasionally. Clissold VIP expertly shifts from the fidgety drum edits of its opening minutes to a jungle riffing midsection with the kind of aplomb the Berlin-based Travis Stewart is renowned for, whilst the BoC style synths on display throughout ensure the track remains finely balanced between accessible and aggressive. This release in a word? Essential!

Sounds Of Sumo label bosses Kry Wolf return to their home imprint with a bold new sound in the form of Concrete; eschewing their usually lighter take on bass music, the title track is a dark combination of wobble bass and dub atmospherics, held together with some steely techno rhythms which comes across like Objekt's "Cactus", while "Bluffin" combines more abstract beats with ghetto house-inspired vocal samples and dubby stabs. Woz is tapped up to remix the title track, being considerably more sparing with the savage bass and rearranging its rhythms into something altogether more angular; Benton's remix of "Bluffin" is classic SOS, providing a bouncy piece of bass-heavy garage house.

Russian producer Ishome has been bubbling away for years, checking in on myriad genres from dub to prog to techno. Here we find her in full dub mode, serving up some of her most sensual sonics to date. Flicking with finesse from cut n' paste starlight delight ("Adam") to swampier, more pensive pieces ("Sad Family") via ambient space baroque ("It Exists"), she shows maturity and rich depths throughout the full album. This should appeal to everyone from Trentemoller fans to Kokeshi lovers.

The chart-bothering Surrey siblings Disclosure are back with possibly their best offering yet. Released on the Hot Chip-affiliated Greco-Roman label, "Control" is a superb slice of sultry and soulful minimal garage, with short of breath vocals that echo vintage Janet Jackson. Joe Goddard seriously challenges the glory of the original with a mesmerising doomy, acid-tinged electro-disco version. Bonus tune "Lividup" is an ecstatic bleep-garage joy and there's further fun with "Boiling" being given cosmic trance (Dixon) and mega camp house (Medlar) workovers. Plus "Whats In Your Head" gets a boombox house mix by Mak & Pasteman.

Luckybeard is both the artist and label name of Italian producer Francesco Barbaglia. Proudly 'devoted to electro, house, dubstep and bass music', it's no surprise then to hear his latest release comprises elements of virtually all of these genres. Production-wise, Barbaglia deals in controlled chaos, and he does so to totally bonkers effect on the frankly incendiary "Descending Love", the apocalyptic crescendo of which has to be heard to be believed.

Following on from their first instalment, the guys at Parisian soul/funk/jazz label Heavenly Sweetness are back with a follow up. Having spent months scouring the net for the best new sounds, they proudly present the cream of their findings - 15 in total. Highlights include the future bass/jazzy trapisms of "Down Brandy" which takes the eponymous RnB singer and warps her into another dimension, the drunk cat on a keyboard-isms of "Muscles", the cool retro hip-hop of "Boomboxin" and the 80s freestyle pop of "The Followers".
