BOOTYFRUIT 013

Review:
Serious booty-fusion abounds on this new series from Booty Fruit. Badboe introduces Jeru The Damaja and Ini Kamoze to a disco bassline. Roast Beatz gives Grand Puba a sexy, sun-kissed facelift. El Bomba and Hidden Riddim go back to school on their Akai and get clever with a range of well-known samples and big old juicy bassline. Waggles finishes the set with the cheekiest addition that sees the Beastie Boys on a lounge lizard samba flex. Party insanity.

Welcome to the mid-2000s. A few years before Jalapeno took him on and developed him into the nu-funk guru he is today, but after he'd scored international kudos by syncing to an Apple advert "Channel Surfing", Featurecast was one of the biggest bootleg barons on the scene. 21st century big-beat and turbo-hip-hop, Goodgroove released some of the cheekiest sample-heavy tunes of his early career. And here they are in all their remastered glory. Highlights include the Wild Cherry sampling bootie shaker "Funky White Brother" and the Vandross-DMX love-in "Get It On The Floor". If you weren't around the first time, now's your chance to catch up.

Some 'best-of' collections seem to arrive way too early. Arrogantly so with some artists. But when you've released 23 EPs and five albums since 2005, it's definitely justified. Especially when you've got a back cat as impressive as Mr Pluse's. Ranging from the Hammond-smashing swinger "Pleasuretown" to the skank-bounce stepper "The Market St Hustle" via the early Dub Pistols-flavoured "Never Get Old", Pluse's accomplished ability to serve any party is more than established and celebrated here. A great way to get up to speed if you're not yet acquainted.

Billed as 2013's biggest collection of reggae-fuelled party tracks, this madcap collaboration between New York's own reggae star Tuffist and newcomers Soul Rebel, DJ Tzinas and Bluntskull whips up new creations from some of reggae's finest tracks. From Toots and the Maytals to The Ethiopians, Soul Rebel, DJ Tzinas and Hammond Classics work together to bring a new flava, while Tuffist's jungle vibes and Bluntskull's breakbeat hype provide fresh new sounds to get the party skanking. Don't underestimate the power of reggae to get floors filled across the country, this series confronts non-dancers and shuns bad feelings. Embrace the party jams!

Music For The People return with their eighth release by none other than main edit man, Krakowski, who has already injected a great deal of boogie retouching into the label thanks to his previous EP. "Skabotage" opens things up in true stepper style, bringing in those brass horns and placing them over some Beastie Boys lyrics to mix things up more than ever before! "The Final Skankdown" is more of a lover's rock ting, re-hashing a track that's almost too famous to name, whereas "Dubbing My Religion" adds a roots-style percussion work over yet another pop anthem. Finally, "La Bambska" slows the original "Bamba" down to blissful reggae tones - incredible

Booty Fruit's DJ Maars joins forces with newcomer Tom Showtime for some seriously delicious sound mash-ups for this latest EP. "Heatwave Episode" is a funked-out re-edit of Dr.Dre's and Snoop Dogg's infamous "The Next Episode", whilst "Hungry Busta" puts a real dancehall vibe over Busta Rhyme's inimitable vocal machine-gun bursts. "Rocksteady Up" re-fixes yet another early 2000's hip hop gem "Ante-Up", and "Champion Steez" goes all breakbeat/ska mode, introducing some rather rapacious Jamaican lyrics over that booty-shaking groove.

With all the amazing dubstep and D&B coming from the city, you could be fooled into thinking bass is Bristol's only fashion. Well it's not; there's also a thriving nu funk scene, and each of the four cats on this generous EP are leading the charge. The Allergies lay down an authentic Dap Kings style vibe on, Parker drops the tempo for a slow, sludgy and remarkably sexy bass bust-up, Mr 50 pays homage to one of the sweetest chocolates on the planet by way of shivering 8-bit bleepery, swampy bass and nifty accordion squeezes and Frenic completes the set with a crisp, dramatic ode to the big beat glory days. Mooqee's label Bombstrikes is doing all right for itself. So much so in fact that they've reached that milestone - a label's first compilation album. Here Mooqee has selected 25 sizzling bangers new and old that do it for him, and hopefully will do it for you too. Highlights include the compressed electro steamroller that is "Back To School", the crunch synth funky freakout of "Come On Bounce" and the devastating bass that's eaten all the pies of "Let's Do It Right Now". When it comes to album remix packages, Fort Knox always deliver. Allowing the Latino-glitter settle from the album release in a timely fashion, here the label commission a series of authentic, respectful reversions... And each one of them rocks. Omegaman dubs out "7th Street Groove" with depth and clarity, Basement Freaks splash out on a Lover's Rock style digi-dub swing for "Salsa De Gala" while the Fort Knox label bosses funkify "Maria Juana" so much there's a danger you may damage your speakers with dangerous funk juice.

Conjuring the heady rave vibes of breakbeat's golden tear-out days, "Mind Control" is a Botchit-level ripsnorter of a track with layers of bowel-tugging saw tooth basses and party-hyping vocals from two of the biggest toasters in the game. "Phenomenon One" is more contemporary with rhythm switches, shocking bass glitches and pummelling drumsteppy kicks. Laced with yet more premier vocals, watch out for the mad switch up after the build. Remix-wise Benny Page shows his more savage side with a firing roller that comes coated in a fine selection of old skooly motifs.

Two of the nu-funk scene's leading lights go toe-to-toe on this sizzling six-tracker from Tru Funk's Polish party HQ. Axe goes deep on a less-is-more ethos; "Funky Jam" builds with confidence, holding the full House Of Pain rap back to the very last moment. "Bush Tucker" is deeper again with a warped wonk to the groove while "Totally Fried" ends Axe's trio with some very cool use of a talkbox and a well known numerical chant from J Kwon. Morlack, meanwhile, develops his electro boogie rep; "Happy Hip Hop" bubbles with a rich synth bassline, "Summer Lover" radiates sunshine vibes via the medium of slap bass and cheeky Vanilla Ice vocal stabs while "Suspicious" wouldn't have gone amiss on a Paula Abdul record. Unashamedly 80s. Unashamedly funky, too...

Fresh-faced funkateer Manjah steps up to the party-hardy Katakana series, and does so with distinction. It's a game of two halves as the first two cuts are dedicated to chanteuses Smokey Robinson and Donna Hightower. Both powered by swashbuckling 60s funk riffs, these are authentic edits done with true creativity. Later on in the EP we head West to the Caribbean as Manjah gets his skank on with Dancehall Queen. Those with a penchant for Greek taverna flavours should hold tight for the rustic groove on "Orienta Patria". Nice work.

London nu-funk imprint Boogie Boutique come correct once again on the Shake It Out EP which pairs up French producer Prosper with a number of collaborators. The title track has Prosper going toe to toe with Knaresborough's finest Rory Hoy on a funk heavy cut n paste production blessed with the J-Live style delivery of Imagine This - German trio Funkanomics handle remix duties and turn in one of their trademark electrified productions that still makes ample usage of Imagine This' delivery. Following this, the superbly titled Old Skool Nemo proves his studio worth alongside Prosper on the boogie number "Get That Boogie Thing" whose speed of sound is matched by swiftness of vocal delivery from JC001 and the man Ashley Slater. Nick Fonkynson drops a remix that begs for a big beat revolution.

Is it just us or are Basement Freaks albums getting funkier and funkier? As hinted with their Soul Digga EP last winter, the trio just keep getting more organic and authentic, this being their most engaging, juiciest funk LP to date. Junkfood head honcho K Lab frees up some time on the release schedule for his own debut album, and not a moment too soon. Wallowing with mischief in the fields of glitch and nu-funk, there's a subversive, off-beat trippy feeling to his work that a lot of current nu-funk is missing. Take "Tricks", a real wonky roller, it's plastered in Kraftwerkian electro angularity. Take the heaving, icy slammer "The Funk Hammer", written with D&B artist Dose it's a thundering bass composition that owes just as much to Paul Hardcastle and Harold Faltermeyer as it does Freq Nasty or Bassnectar. Take "Bangvaders", a wobbling tower of sci-fi and old school references, it's reminiscent of Unique 3 and early TCR releases. Take the whole lot; it's a very accomplished album.

This is a bit of a treat for funk breaks fans, as leading label Boogie Boutique gathers together a selection of its finest floor-filling bangers. With cheeky mash-ups and bootleg remixes from the likes of Hayz, Ursula 1000 and Nick Fonkyson, there's much to enjoy, not least the sheer silliness of some of the rump-shaking fusions. Check, for example, the anthemic grooves of Nine Lives The Cat's "Let Me In" (a brilliantly executed fusion of "Just Be Good To Me" and "Cross The Tracks") or Badboe's "Show Me Ghetto". None of the cuts will win you brownie points with chin-strokers, but they'll certainly smash up the dance - and that's all that matters.

Funkosol get down to some serious Booty business as their crew look way back to the 50s and take us back to the future by way of big bolshy breakbeats and classic hip-hop vocals. A stellar partnership for this latest volume in Bombstrikes' series of funk 'n' breaks party weapons, which came about after Ali B called in on Nick Thayer during a recent Australian tour. The pair fuse together a wild set of influences and sounds, as on opener "Music" which evokes Cypress Hill, Jay Z and classic '60s soul whilst still staying true to their block-rocking breaks sound. "NE Way" dips into a riff made famous by Dillinger and pimps it out gloriously with heavy drums while "Back To You" samples a line from one of De La Soul's classics and adds a Moog-ish bassline and all manner of funky sampled breaks.

For the 20th instalment of the happy-go-lucky Bomb Strikes bootleg series, label regulars Moquee and Pimpsoul join forces. Those who've enjoyed their previous work will no doubt be salivating already - or at least dribbling profusely. "Keep Pounding" is typical of their cheeky, party-hearty style, turning shuffling classic "The Beat Goes On" into a snappy, stepping, glitch-laden breaks banger. "Let It Pop", meanwhile, wobbles and raves in all the right places, lacing a familiar hip-hop vocal over a typically pounding backdrop. Closer "Do It" sits somewhere between the two tracks, cutting up Chic's "Le Freak" and adding a silly, rectum-slackening bassline to propel things forward.

"Turn The Beat Around" takes the disco classic of the same name and reboots it with chunky house 4/4. "It Ain't No Good", meanwhile, takes De La Soul and Chaka Khan's soul-blistered ballad and gives it just a cheeky mild skank. A nu-funk remix of The Mommas & The Poppas' "California Dreaming". Just writing those words seems preposterous. But trust us, Tim McVicar's take on the 60s hippy classic really works! Squidgy bass and chop-slapping beats a-go-go, by the end of the summer it will be illegal not to play this in BBQ and beach sets. Law will also be upheld on anyone not exploiting the utterly funky charms of the other three cuts. DJ Tiznas & Mr BiGK's take on Kenny Dope and Screechy Dan's "Boomin In Ya Jeep" is like Fatboy Slim circa 98, Dedy Dread & Mr Bird take Missy Elliot into Hammond organ heaven while Mr Fresh's "SOUL" is a trip head nod so heavy it falls over into massive sticky pile of jazz.

It's perhaps a bit of a stretch to class all of these floor-friendly bootlegs as "ragga". The opener from label bosses The Dirty Dubsters is actually a skanking, dubwise, breaks-friendly rework of soul classic "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". Titan Sound's "Boom In The Jungle" sounds a bit like a slightly more dutty take on the classic reggae/hip-hop mash-ups once successfully peddled by J-Star. Perhaps the biggest cut of the lot, though, is the gargantuan skank of ZJ TZinas and Mrbigk's "My Style Is De Bomb". That said, the incessant ragga bounce of Spenda's "Get Hot Bun Dem" runs it close, if only for the amount of whoops it manages to cram into four minutes!
