Review:
Time to don a plaid shirt and a pair of Timberland boots (laces undone) because the early 90s revival is in full effect. Lazy hip beats and sampled loops replace the drum and bass sounds that A Surgeon is more commonly known for. Joined by Stevee Bee on most tracks, "808" sounds like a mythical collaboration between Dr Dre and Cypress Hill. "We Won't" is stoner daisy age hip-hop while the more upbeat and jazzy "Hell Yeah" is evocative of a KRS-1 backing track. There's also a very well disguised sample of Alan Braxe & Fred Falke's "Running" tucked in there too. The most ambitious track here however, is the mellow 4/4 "Stomp Son" an orchestrated affair that features sampled contributions from Hunter S Thompson no less.

Review:
The prolific and diverse A Surgeon continues to plough the retro hip-hop field with this new single built around an obscure AOR vocal sample. The original is a reggae-tinged number featuring laid back trip-hop beats and a distorted hip-hop MC. B-side, "Forever", is an even more laid back, instrumental version of the A-Side. Retaining the vocal loop, "Forever" almost verges on synth-pop in places. Quite diverse indeed.

Review:
The ever awesome Honest Jon's decision to reissue its back catalogue in digital format gives you a chance to delve back into the amazing album of Chaabi music from the Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers. The Damon Albarn fronted excursion by Team Honest Jons into Algiers in 2007 has been compared to a film of certain famous Cuban musicians several times over, but the focus should certainly be on the music. Comprised of six lengthy tracks of gripping rhythmic music that sways effortlessly between classical and popular styles, the 19 minutes that make up "Mal Djifni" prove a real highlight, sounding like it could go on forever. This has to be heard to be believed.

Review:
Afla Sackey is a man with a vision, and that vision is to fuse African rhythms with big band horn action. Now together with his new orchestra (Afrik Bawanta) the Londoner is realising this vision. This single boasts four excursions into the genre he's dubbed Afro-funk: the almost acid-jazz of the title track, the laid back 70s funk of "Life On The Street", the urgent and upbeat "Old Lady" and the gorgeously lilting "My Lady".
