Veteran Ninja Tune artist Bonobo has been putting out seriously decent tunes pretty much since the birth of the highly regarded Late Night Tales compilation. It's amazing that they haven't crossed paths before, but with the release of this 33rd entry into the series, the time has finally come for Green to take us on his own nocturnal mission. This 21-track odyssey is seamlessly mixed but the unmixed tracks are also presented so we can enjoy highlights like the velvety soul of 'Didn't I", the hippy funk of "Flowers" and the distorted, fuzzy trap of "Gutter Glitter".
German nu-jazz project Club Des Belugas drop their sixth album, Forward, with a host of guest singers on board for this silky smooth voyage through jazz hooks and downtempo beats. "Straight To Memphis" for example sees main men Maxim Illion and Kitty The Bill explore a Nina Simone-esque swing, while "Peanut Vendor" evokes the big band bop of exotica artists like Esquivel mixed with a South American bounce. A very enjoyable mix of songs that take in everything from lounge jazz to rootsy, bluesy stomps.
Bitches Brew & The Beat Goes On Mix (continuous DJ mix) - (45:11) 126 BPM
This is an excellent little Bitches Brew retrospective from label boss, DJ, promoter and producer extraordinaire Cosmo. Starting with the electronic soul elegy of Chi aka Cosmo's "Mistaken" branded by the distinctive vox of her long time muse Billie Godfrey, your ears are treated to Bambu's instrumental of their timeless Sergio Mendes cover and Jimpster's 2003 Rhodes heavy house rerub of Jinadu. The metallic rhythms and dubbed atmospherics of the MC Chickaboo featuring Freek by The Flaws make this a worthy purchase for those that dabble in melding deep house with more Latin and broken beat flavours.
