Review:
Friedman and Liebezeit are back with the fifth instalment of the Secret Rhythms series. It's all about gnarly percussion and sultry, ethnic harmonics with this pair, and "240-11" is one of those wacky drum arrangements that only these two can conjure. The same goes for the rest of the LP: "130-11" breaks its drum pattern entirely to create a jittery, heads-down number; "105-09" goes on a sort of middle-eastern hip-hop flex with its rattling percussion and mystical acoustics; whilst "120-12" certainly pays homage to the dub school at which these two have certainly studied and passed with flying colours. Another essential release from these two great minds - avoid at your peril...

Review:
There's always been something a little loved-up about the scattergun, genre-bending productions of New York's Drew Lustman, AKA Falty DL. Yet previously, his desire to fuse cutting-edge rhythms with vintage rave references sometimes got in the way. Hardcourage, his first full-length for independent behemoths Ninja Tune, takes a more 'softly-softly' approach. Whereas his last full-length, 2011's You Stand Uncertain, was a kaleidoscopic invitation to start the dance, Hardcourage gently beckons you towards a loving embrace. While there are still plenty of skittish rhythms present, they're wrapped up in a warm orange glow - all serotonin-soaked chords, cascading melodies, bluesy vocal samples and near-Balearic compositions. In many ways it's a startling about-turn, but one that comes heartily recommended.

Review:
Fast and fresh hi-energy electro-samba from this pair of Brazilian producers, who fuse unlikely styles into a truly distinctive sound on the Oliveto EP. Opener "Samborigeno" runs at a juke-like tempo yet is subtly delivered thanks to a range of organic instruments - there's even a didgeridoo providing the bass frequencies, which obviously makes this a real head-turner. It's Bert On Beats' mix that UKF/tropical house fans will want to hook up with though, while modern afrobeat fans will love Maga Bo's treatment of "Samborigeno".

Review:
New on Switchstance Records, LA multi-instrumentalist Fat Albert Einstein uses the simple answering message to provide a constant theme throughout this full-length mystical voyage of an album. Using echoey voicemail as a form of constant narrative over the record, FAE uses a smoky funk soundtrack of all his own making to make this a truly memorable modern funk LP. From the rich '50s reggae/cumbia of "The Dump", the Texan funk of "Appalachia" or the doomy psych organs of "Grinder", this is a hugely rewarding album that deserves repeat listening.
