Review:
Theo Parrish and Tony Allen together on a record? What a combo! Fusing the souls of Detroit and Laos, the unlikely but neatly fitting duo has created two absolutely beautiful soul workouts here. "Day Like This" is a staccato soul roller with emphatic swooping drums, sultry washed-out vocals and big warm organs. "Feel Loved" is a jazzier, more upbeat affair. Again the drums sit at the very forefront of the mix while the rest of the rich, warm instrumentation fits in around them in a soft, dreamy state. The debut release on Theo's new Wildheart label, expect more goodies like this very very soon.

Review:
Following up the runaway success of Crooks & Lovers was always going to be a daunting task for Mount Kimbie, and they've wisely taken their time to come back with a step forwards from a sound which gave rise to the more folky strains of the dubstep aftermath. Sounding fresh and invigorated on their LP for Warp, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker have built on their love of shoegaze indie and brought their component parts into a clearer vision where they used to hide them behind heavy editing and microsampling. There are plenty of reminders that this is a Kimbie record, not least in the winsome melodies that shape the LP, but the duo have succeeded in shearing away their self-conscious trickery to write full-bodied songs that hit on first listen, rather than ten spins down the line.

After some radio silence from Wah-Wah 45s label boss Adam Scrimshire, we recently were treated to an impressive newie called "Convergent". Now the highly anticipated parent album "Bight" has arrived and it's not going to disappoint his many fans. There's 12 tracks in total, all displaying his own unique updating of a kind of indie-electronica/trip-hop fusion. Highlights including the melodic choppy soul of "Turn It Round", the guitar twangs and rolling drums of "Blister" and cinematic moodiness of "Kindle A Fire".

It's been less than 12 months since the last Hot 8 Brass Band full-length, but the New Orleans nine-piece are clearly on a roll. Tombstone, their third album, is every bit as thrilling, intoxicating and funky as their previous albums. Showcasing their terrific live playing and instinctive Louisiana swing, it sounds like a recording of the best impromptu party you've never been to. This time round, there are no gimmicky covers and unusual interpretations, just a string of booming, horn-heavy compositions that showcase their impeccable skills to the max. In truth, it's all the better for it; arguably, Tombstone is their strongest album to date.

Review:
Long-standing horn-hop ensemble YBB return. And they do so on the ever-reliable Tru Thoughts with an album already promised for later in the year. Still armed with a barbed edge, there's definitely a mellowing since their 2006 album Call That A Riot? Across both "20 Questions" and "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" we're bombarded with sleazy bass. And there's an Eminemesque angularity to the vocals yet they're delivered with an Ugly Duckling narrative style. "Overtime" sees the band return to their New Orleans roots with a vibrant slice of upbeat feel good jazz, littered with heavy horn harmonies and a feet-shaking groove.

A special dedication to his formative days praying at the good church of hip-hop, cutting and pasting in Sunday school, Venice Beach member Moar gets down and does the caterpillar. An eclectic ensemble of loops and compositions, this lick shots from Senor Coconut to Bambaataa and back again with its frenetic arrangement of swinging drums, cheeky samples and crafty editing. Highlights include the bongo and fuzz box fusion of "2 vs 2" and low-swung bass shuffle and swing of "Bump On". Moar please!

Review:
Hoorah! It's been a long time coming, but the album from this Canadian act is finally here. We got a taster for their new retro/contemporary jazzy sound with a single in August. The EP featured the breaks-driven "Soul Sugar", the 70s funk indebted "Driving To Montenegro" and the jazzier "Blow", all of which made it to the album. Now joining these tunes are the likes of the fretlessly rhythmic "Blues For BL", the crazy flute frenzy of "The Kelly Affair" and the gentle piano intricacies of "Snowfall".
