Hoorah! It's been a long time coming, but the album from this Canadian act is finally here. We got a taster for their new retro/contemporary jazzy sound with a single in August. The EP featured the breaks-driven "Soul Sugar", the 70s funk indebted "Driving To Montenegro" and the jazzier "Blow", all of which made it to the album. Now joining these tunes are the likes of the fretlessly rhythmic "Blues For BL", the crazy flute frenzy of "The Kelly Affair" and the gentle piano intricacies of "Snowfall".

For the uninitiated, Around7 is a Parisian beatmaker with a difference. Composing mainly with an MPC in the old hip-hop fashion, he makes deep, jazz-soaked jams that sit somewhere between Guru, DJ Cam and Moodymann. This 19-minute 'LP' for Phil Weeks' Robsoul Jazz imprint is something of a surprise gem, flitting effortlessly between bossa-influenced 4/4 cuts (see "Broi"), sampladelic deep soul beats ("The 7th Sin"), stoned trip-hop (the Jazzamatazz flashback vibes of "Butter & Fly" and "I Love BBQ") and head-nodding nu-jazz ("Kick It"). The overall quality suggests that we could be hearing more from him in coming years.

Great to see some previously long lost gems get a second chance through the medium of a digital release. Here we have singer Kim English's classic take on Anita Ward's 'Been So Long', originally released over ten years ago. The original is a late night acoustic soul jam with the glass-shattering vocals of Ms English all over it. More famous was the superclub era remix by Wamdue, classic retro commercial house that brings back memories of superstar DJs in white vests, muscles and 'drawn on beards'.

The mysterious Lea Lea drops her debut release on Adam Scrimshire's Wah-Wah 45s label, and boy is it gonna make a bang! Described as being 'dark soul music', "Black Or White" is a thunderous epic with tribal drums, ominous John Barry-esque brass arrangements, and the rich, confident tones of Lea Lea's powerful voice. Remix-wise Goth-Trad go for pulsating DnB-meets post-dubstep, Other Echoes go for proggy house and DJ iZem goes for synth-heavy RnB.

Now this is an interesting collaboration: Berliner hip-hop dude Suff Daddy moved to Australia and hooked up with Perth rapper Ka-Tu. The result is this joint release courtesy of Suff's permanent home, Melting Pot. It's an impressive listen, with the first 'side' showcasing Suff's trademark skewed, nu-jazzy hip-hop and the second unveiling Ka-Tu's broad sound (which incorporates everything from messed-up, hip electro to retro, orchestra-heavy hop).

Building up to his forthcoming album, Raffertie continues to lay down some of his most far-reaching, mesmerising beats to date. Imagine Jamie Lidell covering The Weeknd - cosmic, emotional and hauntingly delicate, each of the four cuts here trembles with electronica's heaviest components. Highlights include the Trentemoller-esque gothism of "Known" and the harrowed harmonies on "Trust".

Review:
Fresh from the success of the Hurricane Season In Brooklyn album, APS, the project headed by studio whizz/drummer Amon, are back with a follow-up EP. This time the emphasis is on Amon's original influences from West Africa and recording involved a revolving cast of singers and musicians hailing from the country of Guinea all participating at Brooklyn's The Hook Studio. The result is three tracks with a combined running time of about 18 minutes and shedloads of talent. "Coule Ba" touches on reggae, "Korosi" is all retro funk while "Dioubate", with it's enchanting xylophone melodies, is the standout track here.
