Review: Hitting that funked-up 90s vibe like it ain't no thang, Roberto Rodriguez's turn on Freerange bumps and flexes in all the right ways, slamming in some cheery piano chords and DX7 organ riffs while the drums swing jauntily on "Dance Like Nobody's Watching". With the high register notes coming on like Glenn Underground, there's a feeling of uplifting jazz woven into the bright and bashy elements. "Oxymoron" heads for a deeper territory, plying dubby chords and diva vocal snippets amidst a chunky beat with some sly MIDI sax thrown in for good measure. Black Madonna turn out a remix of the title track that tempers the boundless energy of the original by stripping things down and letting a filter take control of the central piano riff.

Review: 2020 Vision offshoot Fina racks up its third release, with veteran house producer Roberto Rodriguez at the helm. While the title track and bonus cut "Fall Night" fit easily within Rodriguez's sophisticated, tech-tinged deep house back catalogue, it's the more disco-leaning "I Got" that really stands out. Pitching up somewhere between vintage Chicken Lips, the early Infant productions of Simon Baker and the live discofunk of Crazy P, "I Got" somehow manages to sound freaky, dubbed-out and weirdly anthemic - all whilst riding a groove that's funkier than a rugby player's jockstrap. It's a perfect late night sound, all told.

Review: Having previously impressed with a range of releases on Delusions of Grandeur, Fina, Freerange, Laka and Compost Black Label, deep house don Roberto Rodriguez returns to Serenades. "Tell Me" is a sprightly, synth-heavy electrofunk meets nu-disco cut that sits somewhere between the orange-hued warmth of Crazy P and the hipster swagger of DFA. While light and airy, there's a dark dubbiness throughout that impresses. Jacques Renault plays with this contrast on his two remixes, which contrast the 80s funk synths with an almighty sub bass part, bright pianos and snappy house percussion. Killer package all round.
