STILOVE4MUSIC 014
25 Mar 11
Played by: Andy Ash
Review:
Upon the original release of Carnival De L'Spirit on Stilove4music back in 2008, Andy Ash was an unknown quantity amongst the disco/house cognoscenti - the fact it was a double pack of vinyl made people sit up and take notice. In the period since then Ash has excelled with releases for On The Prowl and the FOTO imprint run by OOFT. Long since deleted, the eight track set is finally available on digital format and still impresses with a selection of well known Latin, jazz and soul tracks dealt a house twist. Such an approach is nothing new, but when it's executed with the panache of the Badu sampling "Erika Wants" for example, it's worth investigating.

Review:
Ignore the fluffy subtitle - this excellent collection from Needwant is packed to the rafters with high-grade contemporary nu-Balearic fodder. There's a good mix of the slinky (Max Essa's 20-minute, "E2E4" tribute "Panorama Suite"), chugging (Cos/Mes remixed by Acid Orhcestra), ambient (Diskjokke) and dreamy (the bluesy grooves of "Sir John" by White Elephant), with a smattering of more dancefloor-centric Balearic disco hits thrown in (Free Disco's sublime "Odd Summer"). With some genuine scene titans present - Todd Terje, Coyote, Lee Douglas etc - and a smattering of lesser-known producers showcasing their wares, there's enough to excite Balearic veterans and scene newcomers alike.

Review:
Given the ubiquity of classic garage-inspired house records over the last 18 months, it was probably inevitable that some bright spark would eventually decide to put together a themed compilation. To be fair to Needwant, they've done a pretty good job. While there are plenty of big, scene-defining records present - HNNY's "For The Very First Time", Dusky's "Flo Jam", Medlar's mix of Disclosure's "Boiling" and George Fitzgerald's "Child" - there are also of plenty of admirable cuts from lesser-known names and relative newcomers (see the excellent contributions from Ben Pearce and Purple Velvet). Job done.

Review:
Hamburg house producer Lawrence has never made a secret of his influences and on this, his first commercially available mix, he manages to seamlessly unite them. Melchior, Baby Ford and Soul Capsule represent quirky, seductive minimal house, while playfulness mixed with experimentation is audible on Isolee and Roman Flugel's contributions. Lawrence lays bare his love of US house too, with Delano Smith's funk-influenced "My Life" featuring, as does the classic "Forever Monna" by Damier, Trent & Pullen, its soft-focus melodies emerging gradually from Melchior's "Zuknft". Deep, Detroit techno is also on offer too courtesy of Robert Hood and Aril Brikha, and Lawrence also pays tribute to the gentle melodies of 90s 'intelligent techno', ending this sublime mix with Plaid's "Ol".

Review:
With productions as Phase and Luna City Express to his credit and as a former member of Pan Pot, Berlin's Marco Resmann was one of the key figures making music during the minimal explosion. Can he also cut it behind the decks? On the evidence of Watergate 10, the answer is yes. Like all the best minimal DJs, he has a knack of splicing up stripped back, quirky grooves with warm, soulful house. Keeping the mix busy throughout, Resmann moves from the warm rhythms of Soul Phiction and Ricardo Villalobos's classic "808 The Bass Queen" into the smacked out minimal of Heartz 4's "Intimacy Girl" through the androgynous vocals of Digitaline's "Say So" to Andre Lodemann's US influences and Roman Flugel's psychedelic take on Darabi.

Review:
There's a big change in approach on the latest Watergate mix. Gone are the stripped back minimal house grooves or nouveau deep house sounds that had prevailed on previous mixes. In their place come tracks that show Solomun's love of funk, r&b and hip-hop. Alliance Ethnik's "Respect" sets the tone with its slinky groove and hip-house style call and response vocal, while Lucy Pearl's "Don't Mess With My Man" is cut from a similar cloth, its vocal funk signalling an end to linear rhythms. Solomun himself has taken inspiration from this 90s sound and his own "Kackvogel" is all hushed vocals and slick r&b bass. The mix also features the timeless Cologne techno-pop of Heiko Voss' "I Think About You", remixed by DJ Koze.

Review:
Having garnered much praise for his recent Ital output, Daniel Martin-McCormick brings his production partnership Mi Ami over to 100% Silk for some more of that teasing, house-informed-but-not-dictated goodness. Mi Ami come on like a drawn out live jam of deepest house, as vocals and effects feed into an endless hypnotic loop of drum machines and live bass. The tracks require lengthy running times to cover all that noodling ground, so live is the feeling on these tracks. While it's an enjoyable prospect while coursing through your headphones, you can only imagine what the effect in a physical setting would be.

Review:
In case you missed this on its first release in 2009, PMI have rebooted Tom's One More Tune mix for your home and headphone pleasure. An interesting concept that celebrates those special, emotional finales of the night, he's combined lesser-known underground moments such as Blu Mar Ten's "All Over Again" and Mustafa's "Bom Demais" with seminal scene shapers like "Promised Land" and "Strings Of Life". Pinned by reprises and rephrases of his own track "One More Tune", it's incredibly well put together and stands its near-four year age rather well indeed.
