FINA 009

Played by: B-Jam, Joe Morris, Homegroove Project, Low Slung, Fingerman, Dave Allison, Superbreak, Sw, Sleazy Beats Recordings, X-Press 2, Grass Green, Monkey Boots
Review:
Following impressive outings on Under The Shade, Kolour and Sleazy Beats, Melbourne-based producer Griffin James brings his Francis Inferno Orchestra project to 2020 Vision offshoot Fina. Thankfully, he's stuck to his usual style, delivering a trio of deliciously wide-eyed cuts. "Astral Breeze" sets the tone, offering a thrillingly touchy-feely fusion of saucer-eyed chords and hands-in-the-air pianos. "Here's To Feeling Good All The Time" retains this retro-futurist feel, combining bumpin' beats and melodic touches with classic old skool samples. A fine EP closes with "Silk & Smoove", a gorgeously sunny disco-house groover built around some classic strings from an oh-so familiar record.

Review:
UK don James Johnston and German champ Alex Agore once again come together on their hot-to-trot No Matter What imprint to lay down the law on their righteous tributes to vintage house music. Johnston delivers some dreamy garage swing on "Think About U Everyday", and takes things deeper on "Do U Understand?" by drawing you in with an alluring chord line that purrs at the heart of the track. Agore is in equally feisty mood with some textbook vocal turns over his "In My Soul" workout, and then switches up for a breezy, carefree wriggler in the form of "In Your Arms".

Review:
David Moufang has long been electronic music's most underrated producers. Over the years, he's released on such acclaimed imprints as Warp, Philpot, Compost, Workshop, Modern Love and Shanti, run his own acclaimed label (Source Records, not to be confused with the French label of the same name) and happily skipped between raw techno, jackin' acid, minimal grooves and high grade deep house, never once putting a foot wrong. It's some record. The Hydrophonics EP sees him in typically fine form, laying down another intoxicating blend of deep house moods. As you'd perhaps expect from someone of Moufang's experience, all three tracks are immaculately produced, with sophisticated use of melody and little compromise to the rules of deep house fashion. Make no mistake, this is house music for the heads - and all the better for it.

RETROFIT 4
11 Jan 11
Review:
Retrofit reaches release no. 4 with a solo endeavour from boss Jay Shepheard that truly encapsulates the label's mantra of referencing vintage house, disco and techno but laying it in a sheen of contemporary sonic dynamism. This is more than evident on the expertly paced "All Over My Nord" which is driven by a richly elastic analogue bassline riding the slick syncopation. A surfeit of melodic stabs imbues the track with real energy whilst the gradual rise to dominance of a pad wash drenched in Detroit atmospherics adds the requisite emotion! This is complemented by the much more immediate "String Theory" which is a master class in future retro jacking house business whilst "Kuderski's Groove" bridges the gap between filtered disco aesthetics and deep house BPMs with nonchalant ease. Prime DJ business once again from the Retrofit camp.

Review:
Germany-based Romanian producer Borrowed Identity has been picking up plaudits of late for his icy and evocative take on deep house. Following releases on Traveller Records and Stripped & Chewed, the 22 year-old has upped sticks and signed with Legendary Sound Research. As an EP, Je T'aime is full of touchy-feely delights, from the cosmic sweep of the early Simoncino-ish "Connection" and old skool deep house blast of "1989 (Summer of Love)", to the '90s deep garage revivalism of "Je T'Aime". There's also a curious but entertaining fusion of deep house and low-slung disco in the shape of "Living With You".

Review:
Although sounding like a Manhattan laundry or maybe a pizza delivery service, Sixth Avenue Express are in fact a nu-disco duo from Peckham. They've generated some pretty large interest since forming in 2011 and now finally we have a much-anticipated new release from them. "Can't Stop Feelin" is not just an anthem for everyone out there incapable of keeping their hands to themselves. No, it's a deep and sensuous slice of the kind of mellow electro-house favoured by the likes of DJ T, and to which Pete Herbert adds some extra percussion and ravey stabs. Classy!

Review:
Andrew Field-Pickering is a unique talent. Under the Maxmillion Dunbar guise, he's treated listeners to a string of gorgeously kaleidoscopic releases that join the dots between sparkling electronica, E'd-up disco, next-level Balearica and effervescent deep house. With Woo, his first release for RVNG INTL, he's at it again. "Woo" is deliciously fluid, pitting brightly coloured electronic melodies and darting synths against stuttering drum machine rhythms and cascading chords. The beatless "Shampoo" is similarly lucid, delivering a steamy tropical shower of glistening electronics and synthesized steel drums. It's only the formidably robust "Drift" - a Disco Nihlist-ish exercise in analogue groovery - that breaks the spell. Essential.
