Review: For the fourth part of the Dekmantel anniversary series, Skudge and San Proper go head to head with two varying levels of dark techno business. Skudge are in fine form, delivering one of their subtly melodic tracks that work around one repeated and tweaked refrain. San Proper spices things up nicely on his "Rattle (Station 2 Station)", as a grinding, industrial beat mixes with dense vocals, synths, speech samples and plenty more. The end result is a perfect example of the kind of steamy, sweaty haze of late night damage that Mr Proper has made his own.

Review: Dekmantel commence their fifth anniversary series with a weighty three-track offering. Awanto3 serves up a roaming 12 minutes of understated groove for the slow blend, employing a moody key line and punchy disco beat to ride out in a haze of warm-up bliss. Makam is a little more in yer face, taking a classic funk sound base to create a masterclass in feeling good without trying too hard. Lone brings his own inimitable style to bear on "Risttowe", full of electronica synth warbles and jacking beats yet still ploughing the same delirious, dreamy furrow that so much Dekmantel output manages to wind up in.

Review: British deep house producer James Johnston has enjoyed a productive career of late, dropping tracks and remixes on Fine Art, Under The Shade, Boogie Originals and Gerd's 4Lux imprint. Here he returns to No Matter What with arguably his strongest set to date, a four-track onslaught of hip-wigglin' deep house with a distinct old skool US garage twist. While "XTC" and "Get The Feeling Back" are standard Johnson fare - warm, organ-rich deep house with a tidy '90s flex - there's something decidedly rude and sweaty about "Lost The House Keys". Its bone-rattling sub-bass, skippy beats and starlight organs scream "garage", even if the stabs and smooth production try and say otherwise. Nicely done.

Review: Given the current fashion for both UK funky - itself a reinvention of classic speed garage - and new house records inspired by old US garage, it seems a fitting moment to revisit a long-forgotten early British garage 12" from 1994. Partly produced by Grant Nelson and released on his Nice 'N' Ripe label 18 years ago, Dub Essentials Part 1 is something of a time capsule - an early example of US garage being given a distinctly UK twist. While some tracks are typical of USG at the time - see "Feelings Mutual" and the formidably skippy drum track "Gone Tracks" - others feature the deep, wobbling basslines and vocal edits that would later become a UKG trademark (most notably "Deeper" and "Scatter").

Review: When a release is titled Dusty Edits, you expect a bit of old fashioned scalpel work with pops and crackles aplenty, right? Not in the case of this loopy house/disco three-tracker from occasional Editorial and Deep Nota type Kastil. They are, though, delightfully hypnotic, fusing a deep house sensibility with carefully chosen loops from a trio of classic disco and Philly soul cuts (think Tiger & Woods and The Revenge). This perhaps works best on slow-burning lead cut "Still In Love", but check also the head-nodding, string-drenched vibes of "SMD" (a dubby, filter-heavy take on Skyy's disco-funk staple "High").

Review: You can usually rely on David 'Move D' Moufang to deliver the goods, especially when he's in full on ultra-deep mode. Here he joins forces with DJ Late for two ocean-deep excursions that simply bristle with subtle soul and hypnotic, late night intent. Lead cut "Le Fou" is particulary fine, offering just the right balance between crackly atmosphere and head-nodding bottom end groove. "Soon Solitude" is a tough brighter and breezier, building a positive vibe around a sampled blues vocal and some choice keys. Eddie C delivers remixes of both cuts, turning "Le Fou" on its head. Instead of darkness, he offers only dazzling light. It's a wonderful transformation.

Review: This four-tracker from Sai on Swiss imprint STHLM offers a decidedly soft focus take on deep house. Sitting somewhere between the jazz inspired soulful deepness of Detroit's finest and the drifting comfortableness of European veterans Phonique and Franc Roger, Midnight Colours should appeal to all these who enjoy their house cozy and well-produced. Each of the four cuts has a distinctive feel, from the evocative jazz-house grooves of "Black" and sun-flecked weariness of "Red", to the jazz-funk samples of "Navy" and unblemished positivity of "Purple". Throughout, Sai's deft production offers seductive soulfulness in spades.

Review: Brit deep houser Jordan Peak seems to specialize in the sort of bumpin', low-slung grooves that used to be the preserve of heavy-set producers from New York and Chicago. This latest release for Sub-Ann and Adam Shelton's One imprint is no different. Packed to the rafters with chunky, speaker-shaking tackle with a formidable, old skool twist, it's arguably his strongest set to date. Lead cut "Mean Streets" is the real killer, a bouncy, bass-heavy shuffler that recalls classic Danny Tengalia, Derrick Carter and Masters And Work productions of old. The trad garage swing and relentless riffs of "Done Did" is primed for peaktime action, too - as is the jaunty Chris Carrier rework of the title track.

Review: Brooklyn-based five-piece Body Language should probably get used to comparisons with fellow New Yorkers Holy Ghost. Like the DFA act, Body Language boast a hipster-pleasing indie-dance sound steeped in disco, blue-eyed soul, acid house and 80s electro-funk. "Falling Out" somehow manages to fuse all of those disparate elements, joyously skipping between the dancefloor and the radio. Even better is the remix package, which includes two very playable versions from Tiger & Woods in their distinctly loopy, electrofunk-flavoured style (think Prince goes disco-house). There's also a blissfully melodic nu-disco rework from JPrez, and a slacker piano house rub from Golden Touch.
