AKABU feat ALEX MILLS
ZEDD 12185

Played by: Dave Lee / Joey Negro, Justin Winks (Casio Social Club), Anna Maria X, Juno Recommends Deep House, J&m Brothers, Rony Breaker, 2 Good Souls, Distant People, Joey Negro, Alan De Laniere
Review:
When Joey Negro dons his Akabu guise, you know he's about to lay down a timeless house groove. He did it with "Sax My Bitch Up", he did it with "Life Is So Strange", and, with the help of Alex Mills' dulcet tones, he's doing it with this, too. Rolling with a classic analogue bassline and deep dreamy chords, the "Strip Mix" is an instant hip-wiggler with serious 'zone-out' potential while the "Warehouse Mix" adds more texture and a hollow harmony to the bass a la Robin S. Everybody wants something...and your dancefloor wants to hear this!

Review:
Following in the trend set out from their first album, The XX let their resident beatsmith take the reins for a couple of indulgences into more electronically-minded versions of cuts from Coexist. "Sunset" gets worked into a simmering house groove that comes on with a distinct post-punk vibe, all live, unpolished drums and prominent bass, while the vocals get brought raw and close in the mix. "Reconsider" gets into a stripped down, steppy groove played out on found sound percussion immaculately produced with staggering attention to detail, while the original structure of the track drifts in and out of focus as though shot through a dream-fuelled filter.

Review:
Melbourne based artist Mike Steva debuts on the label Yoruba run by one of house music's finest Osunlade. His three track debut is an impressive one, which begins with the slightly despondent, yet hopeful "New Beginning". Steva gains this mood through his flutey and tubular percussion and sustained chords; on "Moment in Time", Rhodes, pianos and shakers back up the sultry vocals of Berlin singer-songwriter Georg Levin. The final track, "Chiko", features finger-played pianos, resulting in a samba-esque flurry of jumbled keys and chimes.
