Review: This release reads like a re-edit producer's convention, with four different artists all delivering their own unique takes on selections from disco's past. "Hitney Wouston" is Deep & Disco's funky tech-house take on "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by you know who. It's an enthralling version that competes with Girls On Top's all-time reworking from back in the day. Alkalino's "Ruff N' Stuff" is a killer blend of throbbing bass, cowbells and a retro rap. Debonair's "Mellow Mellow" features a mesmerising, heavily filtered string loop and lots of disco lasers. Retro-house don Jonewaynes wraps things up with the looped slice of shimmering Balearica that is "Number 1".

Review: Anyone who decides to dedicate a fair chunk of his debut edits release to scalpel cuts of tracks from Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and Stevie Wonder must have gonads the size of watermelons. Sitting down could be an uncomfortable proposition, then, for the mysterious V, whose seven-track debut EP also includes chunky, floor-friendly re-tweaks of The Kinks and Sly & The Family Stone (as well as a couple of stonking disco bangers). While some would argue that much of the material here didn't need messing with, he's done an excellent job. The Dub of "Whole Lotta Love", for example, is pitched just right, offering much more bang and exactly the right amount of disco dubbiness.

Review: For the uninitiated, The Gaff is a Canada-based DJ, producer and prodigious maker of "party breaks" - shorthand for re-edits and reworks that should appeal for those DJs for whom loose rhythms are of more interest than a straight 4/4 pulse. This first contribution to the digital-only Katakana Edits series is full of funk and soul-laden jams with heavy but snappy drums. There's a global feel, too, with excellent forays into afro-funk ("High Life") and Latin beats ("Mambo Number 5"). While all four tracks are carefully tuned to the needs of dancefloors, the afro-flecked disco-funk grooves of "Funny Saga" stands out.

Review: These guys have been flying the flag for quality amongst the disco re-edit community for a while now. This new two-tracker is being hailed as one of their best yet, with the title track being a lean, super-perky chopped up floor filler with infectious female vocals and a just-go-with-it Euro-rap. The second track is from the other side of the tracks: it's the type of slow n sleazy new wave-disco tune you can imagine in a dark early 80s New York fleapit, where the cast of Liquid Sky hang and dance in a beautifully nonchalant manner.

Review: Beards. Where'd they come from, eh? One minute it was all asymmetrical haircuts and 80s electro-pop, then the beards & disco brigade arrived. Well successful re-edit imprint Whiskey Disco proves that beards are still big and happening. YSE has a shady house music history but here displays his love of disco with four quality reworks. "Freeze Frame" is a vocoder-led slow building chant-a-long, "I Own The Boogie" is a deep and intense disco funker with killer basslines (both electronic and live), "Warm Wind Brewing" is a Fantasy Island/Love Boat romantic journey and "Here I Come Again" ends things with some raw disco seduction.

Review: The scalpel fiends and rework hounds behind the Editorial label rarely disappoint, and this latest split EP is packed with floor-friendly midtempo goodies. The most revelatory cut of all is Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee's "Slow Fire", a delicious 109 BPM bumper that re-casts Gwen McRae's electrofunk-era disco bomb as a stoned head-nodder. It works so well that you wonder why nobody's done it before. Elsewhere, there's some sweet groovery from Feza, a surprisingly percussive disco-funk jam from the usually dawdling 78 Edits, and a decidedly Balearic jazz-funk excursion from Manmademusic and Freshtone. Really, it's only the usually on-point B-Jam who lets the side down with the so-so "Everyday".

Review: The mysterious V has got some balls. You see, it's common practice in re-edit circles to steer clear of certain big tunes and artists. V clearly didn't get the memo, because this second volume of party-hearty, floor-filling reworks contains sneaky dubs of tracks by Steve Miller (a smile-inducing version of "Fly Like An Eagle"), the Sex Pistols (a filter-heavy tweak of "Anarchy In The UK"), The Lovin' Spoonful ("Summer In The City") and The Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations", which gets a weirdly breaksy Balearic rework). Better, though, are the versions of the more disco and funk-inclined material. His Betty Wright rework ("Slip & Do It") is particularly magical.

Review: If you're suffering from a post-Christmas slump and are keen to mix things up, this EP of varied edits from Berlin-based producer Alkalino could be right up your alley. Featuring six varied cuts that touch on electrofunk, P-funk, jazz and '80s electro, there's plenty of playable fodder for discerning DJs. Highlights include the talkbox funk and piano solo bizniz of "I Love It", the hustling disco-funk of "Silver Shot" (check the fabulous percussion break halfway through), the jazztime swing of "Janeiro" and the heavyweight Whodini re-cut "Something Funky". Also worth a look is the winding, cosmic oddness of "Warp" - a curious concoction that should appeal to those who like to drop a bit of leftfield disco.

Review: DiscoDat continue on their quest to retweak every song from the 1970s charts with another EP, this time by Vinyladdicted; and why not? Sometimes it can actually improve on the original, as in the case of Dr Hook's mid 70s mustachioed romp, "Sexy Eyes", which gets looped and beefed up here. "Don't Break My Heart" soups a little known 1980 anthem by Tonee & Bill Collins, "Miss Ya" is sweet holiday funk but it's a hypnotic reworking of Hot Chocolate's "Stay With Me" that really hits the spot.

Review: With his Midnight Riot compilations, Yam Who has proved to be a shrewd mover. By focusing largely on the edits-not-edits sound - where disco and electrofunk meets deep house - he's managed to catch the zeitgeist of a scene that remains hugely popular. This third volume reads like a veritable who's who of contemporary talent, featuring both well-known names (Ilya Santana, Rayko, Sleazy McQueen, Get Down Edits) and rising stars (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Jimmy The Twin, B-Jam, the excellent Stupid Human). Musically, it largely delivers what you'd expect, expertly moving between delay-laden disco dubbiness, Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house and starlight nu-boogie.

Review: There's something admirable about the no-nonsense approach of the Editorial camp. While steeped in a deep love of the disco sound and the genre's deep history, the edits and reworks they release are first and foremost tried-and-tested dancefloor bumpers. The four cuts here are a great case in point. Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee's "Do It One More Time" is a hustlin', low-slung treat (recasting Harvey Mason's "Groovin You" as a sweaty chugger), while Rabo & Snob's "Camel Filter" romps along on a formidable disco-funk flex. The biggest surprise, though is Vinyladdicted's "Alright", a rush-inducing chunk of Balearic disco.

Review: Following the success of the first three volumes of his AOR-tinged V's Edits series, Russian producer Valique (best known under his usual pseudonym for disco-flecked funk breaks) unleashes another EP of scalpel jobs. This time, the sources are a little more obscure (the silly artist names offer clues), but the party-starting remit remains. So, we get some chunky low-slung, Fleetwood Mac-ish rock ("Because"), a dash of hustling disco-funk ("Up"), a sprinkling of synth-bass laden funk-rock ("Soul Francisco"), a thickset house version of a soul classic ("Good Or Bad") and a big chunk of '90s US garage silliness ("Love You Too") - all tweaked and teased with an eye on dancefloor devastation.

Review: Timewarp have been putting out bangers since 2005 on their own Timewarp Music, a Greek label dedicated to only the most alluring electronic sounds. This is their new LP and it's choc-a-bloc with surprises for you; starting from the opener "Bullshit", an irresistibly hip-swanking trip-hop number, it goes all the way through "Disco Frisco" featuring the one like Leon for a smooth but rough-ready house roller, and ends up in places never expected like "Latin Cookies", a track so joyful and packed with good vibes that it can't be properly catalogued into one genre...it has one hell of a bass line though - much like everything else on this sweet full-length from the boys at Timewarp.

Review: Arriving at a fourth Midnight Riot label compilation in little over a year is no mean feat for Yam Who?'s ISM operation, and the key to their success lies in the diversity of sounds you can include within the overarching theme of nocturnal grooves. And of course the high standard of artists that contribute, with this bumper 23 track selection no different as Yam Who? call on some respected names to contribute; seeing the likes of Joey Negro, Ilya Santana, Rakyo and LTJ Experience puts you at ease as you know you are in good hands - the Negro edit of Yambee's Ballistic Brothers classic "Blacker" is a notable highlight. Yet the fact these established names don't overshadow the contributions of lesser known Midnight Riot newcomers such as Dan Butler and Caserta - indeed the latter Boston based producer provides perhaps the best example of a 'nocturnal groove' with his slow burning, beat down house cut "Get Down".

Review: A belated but welcome return for Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew. This time round, though, they're not cutting-up classic boogie tunes in a Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house style. Instead, they offer up three woozy, all-enveloping deep house cuts from The Groovers. "Here's To You Mr Robinson" laces a classic jazz vocal over a smooth-as-silk deep house groove, while "Make Me Feel" turns a delicious jazz-funk jam into a deep, soulful treat - all twinkling Rhodes, edible horns and sweeping strings. "Where You Belong", on the other hand, goes further into slow dance territory, lacing fluid funk guitars, sensual pianos and a delightful vocal over a deep rare funk groove.

Review: Belgian duo Spirit Catcher have been producing uber-slick, disco-tinged electro-house/proto nu-disco for almost ten years. However, their sound can maybe veer towards being a bit too tasteful, a bit dry, so teaming up with pastel clad 80s enthusiasts Mullet has awoken a playful sense of fun in their style. "Final Call" is an electro-boogie anthem featuring the cheeky vocals of Mr Renard and "Never Give Up" sees the pair embark on a delicious analogue synth-funk mission. Label boss Casio Social Club remixes the lead track in a Mylo stylee but it's Tad Wily's deep n spacey odyssey that's really floating our yacht.

Review: Having previously danced the night away, the extended musical family behind the Editorial imprint sit down together for a nice spot of Sunday Brunch. In practice, that means a slightly deeper, groovier flex than some previous outings. There's plenty to enjoy, though, from the low-slung mutant nu-disco of JKriv's "Something Special" and the tumbling goodness of Sonicvibe's "Wet Level" (based on Rick James' "Cold Blooded"), to the original boogie sweetness of DJ Butcher's "All My Dub" (a much-needed tweak of Major Harris's long-forgotten "All My Life"). Of course, there are a couple of peaktime stompers, with Feza's Bohannon-ish "Feel Like" standing out.

Review: On his previous two releases, this shady re-edit guy, only known as 'V', caused many a cough and splutter within production circles over his decision to re-work largely well-known commercial hits. Maybe he's taken this on board, as here his selection is a lot less recognizable. "Miracles" is certainly identifiable as "I Believe In Miracles", but he's used the lesser know original by Mark Cappani as source material. Elsewhere, Betty Everett's "Hey Lucinda" gets almost doubled in length and Natalie Cole debut "Everlasting Love" gets stripped back. Bigger names do surface later though, including Nina Simone's "I'm Going Back Home" and even T.Rex's "Children Of The Revolution".

Review: Continuing their forays into the world of yesteryear grooves unabated, those pesky hell-dwelling Lumberjacks are at it again, this time drafting in O Boogie and Red Greg for some disco funk finesse for the smoothest get-downs. O Boogie is up first, leaning heavy on a rich piano hook that hammers lower register chords over an incessant disco tick, while evergreen track "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" gets re-versioned in such a floor-burning fashion you'll need asbestos boots just to get out alive. Red Greg's "Inner Rhythm" plies familiar tropes into a sweet instrumental groove that makes all the right moves.

Review: Lino 'Alkalino' Rodriguez continues to yo-yo between edits and original productions. Following some decent deep house outings for his own Audaz imprint, here he returns to the world of edits with a ten-track collection of impressively varied reworks. Predictably, he merrily switches between styles at will, touching on '80s AOR B-sides ("Shine On"), Italo (the excellent "Let's Give It A Try"), Balearica ("Secret Life", a rework of "City Lights"), disco-funk (the bumpin' "Untie Me Down"), art-disco (Arthur Russell rework "Keep On Doing") and industrial funk (the Nietzer Ebb-ish "New Beat"). Predictably, all sound like they'd do suitable damage on dancefloors.

"Hefty Done Me Right" begins proceedings with a house-disco hybrid sporting a particularly meaty analogue bassline, 80s electro vocal samples and shimmering pop synths, while "The Electric Model" marries a distinctly Kraftwerk-esque motorik vibe with Balearic disco sweeps and horns. Up next, "One Night In Puzon" opens with a tense rising string line, broken with a crystalline piano mosaic and deep squelching bass. Finally, TW closes proceedings with his own dub take on "Hefty Done Me Right", amping up the electro feel of the original with an MPC cut-up style reworking filled with heavy vocal samples and rolling piano stabs, transplanting the original from its Italian roots to 80s Harlem.

Review: Trust us, in our experience when encountering someone who goes by a nickname like Fingerman, it's usually best not to enquire as to how they came to be christened so. Here though he seems intent for us to know his true story, and luckily for us he's explaining it through the language of music. "I Know Its Mine" is a snazzy, brassy anthemic jam, "Lenny's Disco" is super camp fun of the Carl Bean variety, "Outta Sight" is more low-slung stuff, and "Honky Honk", with its incredible sliding bassline, is the sound of a roof being raised!

Review: ISM Records' two Futurism EPs have proved so popular that label boss Yam Who has decided to use them as the inspiration for an expansive compilation of previously unreleased gems. Unlike the label's other popular strand, Midnight Riot, there's always been a bit more of an open-minded, eclectic feel about the Futurism releases. This is no different. Whilst rooted in nu-disco and deep house, Futurism: Shades of Space also touches on 21st century jazz-funk (Manmademusic), bongo-laden spiritual house (Nu Ak's "Fly Away"), fluid garage (Nega Tiv's excellent "Liquid Call"), woozy Balearica (Ben La Desh and Plan DAqua), block party boogie (Questlife feat Wildstyle, Freekwency) and nu-jazz (Hamish Balfour). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.

Review: Although sounding like a Manhattan laundry or maybe a pizza delivery service, Sixth Avenue Express are in fact a nu-disco duo from Peckham. They've generated some pretty large interest since forming in 2011 and now finally we have a much-anticipated new release from them. "Can't Stop Feelin" is not just an anthem for everyone out there incapable of keeping their hands to themselves. No, it's a deep and sensuous slice of the kind of mellow electro-house favoured by the likes of DJ T, and to which Pete Herbert adds some extra percussion and ravey stabs. Classy!

Review: It's been a while since we've had contact with Beaten Space Probe, but presumably his probe is still operational because here we have a follow up to last year's debut. Once again this Japanese producer (aka Shota Tanaka) is in party mood with four authentically 70s sounding slices of disco. "Boogie Rice" marries Philly strings with a killer funk riff and "In Your Soul" is a tour de force of female belters; "Feel Like Dancing" is the standout with a Nightfever funk that'll make you strut like Travolta, although "River Magic" come a close second with its emotional orchestration and tight guitar licks.

Review: Volume Six of the esteemed Sccucci Manucci operation sees the Tom Selleck of disco flecked house rack up the air miles with an international cast of talent contributing. Contemporary disco connoisseurs should be fully aware of Gredits, the Swedish producer with previous on the Basic Fingers label; "Doing It Deep" does it right, seductively teasing out a killer looped up disco groove that gets more flirtatious with every listen. German dwelling Greek producer Elef takes us into classicist house terrain with the infectious bump and shuffle of "Lazy Liz", whilst a long promised Sccucci weapon from The Candy Dealers (aka Christian Malloni & Jay West also sees release. Glaswegian Illyus rounds out the EP, as he returns for a second bite of the Manucci cherry with the late night dubby house goodness of "Movin House".

Review: Having previously impressed with an EP of shuffling deep house disco on Gazeebo International, Australian musician/producer Jad Lee drops an EP of woozy, floor-friendly deepness on Toy Tonics. "Do It Get Up" is indicative of his trademark sound, delivering a strobelight-friendly fusion of chunky bottom-end, wiry synths and thickset chords. Kolombo remixes, offering up a delightfully wonky, stripped-back version that sounds like Sweet Exorcist making nu-disco, under the influence of helium. "Tipsy" throws some weighty electrofunk bass into the mix with impressive results, while the boogie sampling "Lovin" tickles and teases with its blend of jackin' beats and Tiger and Woods-ish cut-ups.

Review: Having already stormed up the sales charts on vinyl, Ron Basejam and Dicky Trisco's Drop Out Orchestra reworks finally make their way to digital download. Trisco's mix is particularly good fun, offering the perfect balance between percussion-laden disco revivalism (check the low-slung walking bass, jazz guitar and heavyweight timbales hits) and slick nu-disco (tasty synth melodies, some 21st century FX). Crazy P man Ron Basejam opts for a housier approach, weighing in with a mix that sits somewhere between electrofunk revivalism, jazz-funk and string-laden deep house. Expect to hear it plenty of times on disco dancefloors over the next six months.
