LTJ Experience - "Posin" - (6:34) 106 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Arriving at a fourth Midnight Riot label compilation in little over a year is no mean feat for Yam Who?'s ISM operation, and the key to their success lies in the diversity of sounds you can include within the overarching theme of nocturnal grooves. And of course the high standard of artists that contribute, with this bumper 23 track selection no different as Yam Who? call on some respected names to contribute; seeing the likes of Joey Negro, Ilya Santana, Rakyo and LTJ Experience puts you at ease as you know you are in good hands - the Negro edit of Yambee's Ballistic Brothers classic "Blacker" is a notable highlight. Yet the fact these established names don't overshadow the contributions of lesser known Midnight Riot newcomers such as Dan Butler and Caserta - indeed the latter Boston based producer provides perhaps the best example of a 'nocturnal groove' with his slow burning, beat down house cut "Get Down".

Review: Russian producer Valique is back with the latest installment of his successful disco edit series. He specialises in toughened, quanitised beats, lending old stuff a modern electro-house groove. Highlights here include his highly danceable take on The Smiths' "Barbarism Begins At Home", the skippy, cut up house shuffle of "Angry Brides" and the infectious electro-funk anthem "Like Dancing".

Played by: The Groovers
Review: Given his encyclopedic knowledge of music, you'd expect any compilation put together by Bill Brewster to be full of unlikely gems and lesser-known anthems. That's certainly the case with After Dark, the first in a new DJ-focused series from the Late Night Tales camp. From start to finish, Brewster's selections are spot on, from the lowdown, slo-mo disco oddness of Sheffield chanteuse Marti Caine's "Love The Way You Love Me" and wide-eyed, acid-laden kosmiche of Coober Peder University Band's "Moon Plain", to the dirty electrofunk of Zed Bias's "Koolade" (featuring Toddla T, of all people) and mid'80s percussion fest of Martin Kershaw's "Keep On Pokin". If that wasn't enough, Brewster has also unearthed a decent Jamiroquai record. The wonders never cease.

A Brighter Light (instrumental) - (7:00) 119 BPM
from $1.49
Review: The fantastically named A/Jus/Ted - veteran producers Justin Strauss and Eddie Mars on a collaborative tip - make their debut on Under The Shade. "A Brighter Light", featuring the treacle-thick soul vocals of Jeremy Glenn, sits somewhere between electro-soul, early Chicago house and Balearic nu-disco. As you'd probably expect from the soul-minded Strauss, the resultant track is effortlessly soulful, quietly uplifting and brilliantly produced. The same could be said of the more instrumental Re A/Jus/Ted remix, which blends skittering proto-house rhythms and electrofunk dub elements with woozy modern deep house. Like the original, it's excellent.

Review: Further proof of the blurred boundaries between nu-disco, deep house and '90s house revivalism is provided by this jaunty four-tracker from Auckland-based studio buff Shallow Taxi Club. There's much to admire about the crisp, vintage house pianos, twittering melodies and bumpin' beats of opener "Flashback", but it's the deep, Crazy P-ish nu-disco groovery of "Mark My Words" that most impresses. Choose between the baggy 'Disco Edit' and a delightfully touchy-feely rework from Greg Wilson faves Monkey Boots. The latter also turn "Melody of Creed" into a gorgeous slice of shuffling deep house bliss.

I Can See The Light - (7:19) 116 BPM
from $1.49
Review: Whiskey Disco returns with a quartet of blisteringly good reworks from Dead Rose Music Company and Satin Jackets. Dead Rose Music Company open proceedings in style with "Nothin To Ya", a brilliantly low-slung, bass-heavy re-edit-turned-remix of the Jones Girls' "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" that turns the delightful original into a dubbed-out chunk of dancefloor chugginess. The more upbeat "Too Late", based on a lesser-known favourite, is almost as good. Satin Jackets' "The Hustle" provides some looser - but still formidably heavy - dewy-eyed disco-soul thrills, while "I Can See The Light" is more Balearic than a wet, sloppy kiss from a grinning stranger.

MannMadeMusic - "The Third Eye" - (6:13) 115 BPM

Review: The Legendary Sound Orchestra continues his attempt to provide disco edit lovers with something extraordinary, with a third collection of hand picked reworks. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from his own sparse, piano-heavy version of Silvetti's Salsoul classic "Spring Rain", to the rolling, bongo-laden goodness of 78 Edits' sprightly but loopy "Don't You Know". Highlights-wise, it's a toss-up between Alkalino's baggy disco-soul shuffler, "Have A Ball", and Jimmy The Twin's superb, TR-707-enhanced "Party Down". The latter, a horn-heavy chunk of upbeat disco-funk, is arguably the Bristol-based scalpel fiend's best work to date.

Irene Cara - "Breakdancing" (Rayko edit) - (5:28) 120 BPM

Review: This duo of edits was originally released by DJ Ionic's imprint, Kojak Giant Sounds, a few years ago. Although the choice of source material here is undeniably obvious, Rayko is fairly restrained in his rework's of Nick's AOR classic "Edge Of Seventeen" and Cara's 1983 benchmark electro-disco tune "Breakdance", providing a little bit of vintage class to modern dancefloors in the process.

Review: Possibly named after his favourite retro toasted sandwich maker, Brevil is an Australian disco producer currently on his third outing for Kosta Ellis' Superbreak imprint. His sound is low-slung and dirty and any of the four tracks here are guaranteed to get everybody in the mood for some disco love. Highlights include the loopy and hypnotic "Slow N Low", the shimmering female funk of "Never Gonna Stop" and the rumbling bass and delayed drums-fest that is "Turn U On".

Review: Following the success of the first three volumes of his AOR-tinged V's Edits series, Russian producer Valique (best known under his usual pseudonym for disco-flecked funk breaks) unleashes another EP of scalpel jobs. This time, the sources are a little more obscure (the silly artist names offer clues), but the party-starting remit remains. So, we get some chunky low-slung, Fleetwood Mac-ish rock ("Because"), a dash of hustling disco-funk ("Up"), a sprinkling of synth-bass laden funk-rock ("Soul Francisco"), a thickset house version of a soul classic ("Good Or Bad") and a big chunk of '90s US garage silliness ("Love You Too") - all tweaked and teased with an eye on dancefloor devastation.

Review: Larse is a hard act to track down and although we don't know much about them, one thing we do know is that Larse is very good at getting backsides moving. This turbo-themed EP boasts 4 original deep body-disco cuts, the standouts being the sublime and totally glamorous "Hot" and the (possibly even better?) Adana Twins remix, which is indeed based around a twisting bassline. What's not to love?

Review: Trust us, in our experience when encountering someone who goes by a nickname like Fingerman, it's usually best not to enquire as to how they came to be christened so. Here though he seems intent for us to know his true story, and luckily for us he's explaining it through the language of music. "I Know Its Mine" is a snazzy, brassy anthemic jam, "Lenny's Disco" is super camp fun of the Carl Bean variety, "Outta Sight" is more low-slung stuff, and "Honky Honk", with its incredible sliding bassline, is the sound of a roof being raised!

Review: Anyone who decides to dedicate a fair chunk of his debut edits release to scalpel cuts of tracks from Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane and Stevie Wonder must have gonads the size of watermelons. Sitting down could be an uncomfortable proposition, then, for the mysterious V, whose seven-track debut EP also includes chunky, floor-friendly re-tweaks of The Kinks and Sly & The Family Stone (as well as a couple of stonking disco bangers). While some would argue that much of the material here didn't need messing with, he's done an excellent job. The Dub of "Whole Lotta Love", for example, is pitched just right, offering much more bang and exactly the right amount of disco dubbiness.

Review: Wow! Fans of either Escort or modern nu-disco (or both!) can now rejoice as the retro New Jersey band's eponymous LP has now been remixed by a string of key producers. It's a veritable feast, a smorgasbord even, of pulsating electronics, female vocals and the kind of music that makes you imagine you're Richard Gere in American Gigolo. Highlights include the voodoo weirdness of Sub Swara's take on "All Through The Night", the high octane Proper Heat mix of "Chameleon Chameleon" and Ewan Pearson's Tom Tom Club-esque version of "Cocaine Blues".

Review: Having previously danced the night away, the extended musical family behind the Editorial imprint sit down together for a nice spot of Sunday Brunch. In practice, that means a slightly deeper, groovier flex than some previous outings. There's plenty to enjoy, though, from the low-slung mutant nu-disco of JKriv's "Something Special" and the tumbling goodness of Sonicvibe's "Wet Level" (based on Rick James' "Cold Blooded"), to the original boogie sweetness of DJ Butcher's "All My Dub" (a much-needed tweak of Major Harris's long-forgotten "All My Life"). Of course, there are a couple of peaktime stompers, with Feza's Bohannon-ish "Feel Like" standing out.

Review: Joey Negro's Z Records have a remarkable knack for knocking out vintage compilation after vintage compilation. Here though, they've really discovered a rare niche of unmined gold courtesy of Nuphonic's David Hill who acts as selector. As Hill explains "gospel music has often followed trends in secular music" and this album captures 24 attempts of gospel getting on the disco and boogie trains. Highlights include the hiNRG longing of "I Need You", the electro-soul of "Love Is The Message" and the piano & strings frenzy of "Awake O Zion".

Review: Here Chopshop welcome Moplen to their clan with an introductory EP of re-jigs. It's an impressive start: "Ma Foom Bey" is brooding Afro house with a slightly Chi-town undercurrent, 80s disco staple "Ain't Nothin Goin On But The Rent" gets a respectful nip and tuck while "Cavern" ends things with a way-out and noodley adaptation of Liquid Liquid's "Cavern".

Review: With a sly wink and a beckoning wave of the hand, Chopshop invite us into their boudoir for another seductive trip into slinky rework territory. As usual, many bases are covered. Captain Futuro kicks things off with "Love Me Crazy", a slo-mo disco-flecked hip-hop head-nodder. Label supremo DJ Butcher turns Dave Gerard's "Twisted Message" (a sneaky bootleg version of the Furious Five classic) into a disco funk-breaks smasher, before laying down some revivalist rare groove fun in the shape of his own "However Do You Want Me" (a rework of Soul II Soul's "Back To Life"). A decidedly sensual package is completed by the misty-eyed headiness of Ill Advised "Superstition" (yep, a remake of that "Superstitition").

Enjoy Your Life by Rayko on Undercover Operations Cue Track
Emotion (edit) - (7:16) 115 BPM
from $2.26
Review: Given how many re-edit releases he's had over the last few years, you have to wonder whether Rayko will soon run out of fresh scalpel material. Thankfully, he's not reached the 'barrel-scraping' stage, as this breezy two-tracker proves. "Enjoy Your Life" is the epitome of summery disco-soul, all shuffling beats, addictive vocals, darting strings and wiggly funk guitars; it's the sort of thing that should be booming out of a boat party soundsystem somewhere in the Adriatic. "Emotion", meanwhile, sees Rayki return to his love of electrofunk drums, turning a synth bass-laden disco jam into a touchy-feely instrumental delight.

Review: Those with a keen eye for detail will note that Midiman is a name of a range of midi controllers and soundcards. It's also the chosen pseudonym of Russian deep house upstarts Lenya Goosey and Sergey Silvertone. Here, they pop up on Pole Position with six tracks of super-smooth deep house. Their style is fluid and melodic, seemingly taking influence from Russian nu-Balearic disco and classic US deep house. The electrofunk-influenced shuffler "Come To Me" is our pick, though the dreamier "For The Sake Of Love" (available in two sparkling versions) and similarly disco-influenced beach house groover "Dreams Come True" run it close.

Review: The highly anticipated release of Grimy Edits Vol. 6 is here with the type of monster edits you'd expect from GRIMY! On this sixth volume of the popular edit series you have Veteran Chicago DJs Zernell & Rahaan bringing the heat with Rahaan's supercharged version of Rebound as the 1st track, coupled with the Zernell - Rahaan collaboration of an obscure B-side Latin Disco / Break Beat Jam perfectly titled WHAT! Joined on the flip side of the release is veteran edit master Tim McAllister of M.I.L.C. Music fame who takes a lesser known JB 7" and transforms it into the dance foor killer titled "I Need Help!".

Review: This release reads like a re-edit producer's convention, with four different artists all delivering their own unique takes on selections from disco's past. "Hitney Wouston" is Deep & Disco's funky tech-house take on "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by you know who. It's an enthralling version that competes with Girls On Top's all-time reworking from back in the day. Alkalino's "Ruff N' Stuff" is a killer blend of throbbing bass, cowbells and a retro rap. Debonair's "Mellow Mellow" features a mesmerising, heavily filtered string loop and lots of disco lasers. Retro-house don Jonewaynes wraps things up with the looped slice of shimmering Balearica that is "Number 1".

Review: ISM Records' two Futurism EPs have proved so popular that label boss Yam Who has decided to use them as the inspiration for an expansive compilation of previously unreleased gems. Unlike the label's other popular strand, Midnight Riot, there's always been a bit more of an open-minded, eclectic feel about the Futurism releases. This is no different. Whilst rooted in nu-disco and deep house, Futurism: Shades of Space also touches on 21st century jazz-funk (Manmademusic), bongo-laden spiritual house (Nu Ak's "Fly Away"), fluid garage (Nega Tiv's excellent "Liquid Call"), woozy Balearica (Ben La Desh and Plan DAqua), block party boogie (Questlife feat Wildstyle, Freekwency) and nu-jazz (Hamish Balfour). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.

Review: Having found success blending chopped-up disco and soul cuts with head-nodding house rhythms, Luca Trevisi is in no rush the flip the script. Then again, why should he be? As this second collection of shuffling disco/soul/house blends proves, nobody else does head-nodding slo-mo and midtempo groovery quite as well. Ain't Nothing But A Groove offers few surprises, but a whole heap of excellent, floor-friendly productions (some, such as the brilliant "Get Down", which have previously been released as singles). While the balance between disco, funk, soul and house changes throughout - the jazzy "Vuonto Beat", for example, is almost a straight-up murky deep house cut - Trevisi's wonderful way with grooves constantly impresses.

Review: Nu disco re-edit label Editorial seem to be continuing on their recent deep slo-mo direction. Their fifth label comp/EP sees them in fine fettle, with Sellouts delivering the deep n loopy "Satisfy" (a deceptively powerful dancefloor builder), Deep&Disco's "Otis Held Tight" is a beautifully sparse yet soulful outing, Manuel Shagun's "So Good" provides an amazing glammy disco stomp, riddled with samples and all the better for it, while the party winds up with the cruising blue sky funk of The Noodleman's "3rd Time".

Review: The mysterious V has got some balls. You see, it's common practice in re-edit circles to steer clear of certain big tunes and artists. V clearly didn't get the memo, because this second volume of party-hearty, floor-filling reworks contains sneaky dubs of tracks by Steve Miller (a smile-inducing version of "Fly Like An Eagle"), the Sex Pistols (a filter-heavy tweak of "Anarchy In The UK"), The Lovin' Spoonful ("Summer In The City") and The Beach Boys ("Good Vibrations", which gets a weirdly breaksy Balearic rework). Better, though, are the versions of the more disco and funk-inclined material. His Betty Wright rework ("Slip & Do It") is particularly magical.

Review: Volume Six of the esteemed Sccucci Manucci operation sees the Tom Selleck of disco flecked house rack up the air miles with an international cast of talent contributing. Contemporary disco connoisseurs should be fully aware of Gredits, the Swedish producer with previous on the Basic Fingers label; "Doing It Deep" does it right, seductively teasing out a killer looped up disco groove that gets more flirtatious with every listen. German dwelling Greek producer Elef takes us into classicist house terrain with the infectious bump and shuffle of "Lazy Liz", whilst a long promised Sccucci weapon from The Candy Dealers (aka Christian Malloni & Jay West also sees release. Glaswegian Illyus rounds out the EP, as he returns for a second bite of the Manucci cherry with the late night dubby house goodness of "Movin House".

Review: It appears that Systematic label boss Marc Romboy and his Chicago veteran old pal Blake Baxter have got lost on a road trip. We can just see them now, in a Delorean and struggling with maps and compasses before exiting the vehicle to find themselves in Paris circa 1998. Yep "The Art Of Sound" sees the normally jack-obsessed producers explore the whole French touch sound, and it largely works - the main version being faster, vocal and less retro. Version 2 though is all about looping and filtering those disco samples to within an inch of their lives!

Review: Prins Thomas' Full Pupp label seems to excel at finding hitherto unknown Norwegian disco talent. Here, it offers up the debut full-length from Oslo native Andre Bratten, who apparently shares studio space with Lindstrom and Todd Terje. Comparisons with both producers are understandable; Be A Man You Ant's shimmering vintage synths, stargazing melodies and chugging space disco grooves (particularly those on the intoxicating "Aegis") are reminiscent of both producers' early work. It's already been pointed out that "Libra" shares an aesthetic with Terje's "Inspector Norse", while the quirky "Still Sertie" and mutant funk oddity "I Am Square" bear all the hallmarks of a Six Cups of Rebel B-side. Clearly, Bratten is a talent to watch.

Review: Nelue is a man who knows which side his disco toast is buttered on: the floor-friendly party side. As such he doesn't hold back; Sinead O'Connor's definitive version of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" gets whisked up in a whoosh-filled blender and arrives back in bouncey, housey form. Stevie Wonder gets a furious electro-disco makeover on "Walkers" and elsewhere "The Real Deal" is attitude-heavy electroboogie and "All My Love" is an emotionally stirring anthem with belting female vocals.

Review: Venice Beach's DJ Moar goes it alone again for the latest in his long line of classy disco re-edit EPs. The Philly in the title betrays his love of those string arrangements best found here in the lazy disco-rock of the title track. "Bass N Key" instead fuses slap bass funk, mellow keys and dreamy synths, but the highlight here is the almost warped deep and spacey loops of "New Star".

Review: Having impressed with the first collection of re-edits earlier in 2012, the Legendary 1979 Orchestra gather together more floor-friendly reworks from friends and associates on their own Legendary Sound Research imprint. With different tempos, sounds and styles at play, it's a well-rounded collection. Contrast, for example, the tough 80s-electro-goes house vibes of Legendary 1979 Orchestra's "Burning" and the slow, soulful bump of 78 Edits' "Can't Have My Love". Or, for that matter, the breezy party vibes of Andrei's "Let's Go Raw" and the heavy funk of Richmed's "Do Your Thang". There's also some more 80s disco tweakery from Spanish edit workhorse Rayko.

Review: For the uninitiated, The Gaff is a Canada-based DJ, producer and prodigious maker of "party breaks" - shorthand for re-edits and reworks that should appeal for those DJs for whom loose rhythms are of more interest than a straight 4/4 pulse. This first contribution to the digital-only Katakana Edits series is full of funk and soul-laden jams with heavy but snappy drums. There's a global feel, too, with excellent forays into afro-funk ("High Life") and Latin beats ("Mambo Number 5"). While all four tracks are carefully tuned to the needs of dancefloors, the afro-flecked disco-funk grooves of "Funny Saga" stands out.

Review: Lino 'Alkalino' Rodriguez is getting straight to the point with the title of the latest release on his own Audaz label. The music featured also has a similar no-nonsense attitude, being all attention grabbing party starters. "Love That Funk" is an excellent electro-disco-boogie banger with an underlying hi-NRG feel. Ronnie Law's classic, "Always There", is subtly retweaked in sensitive fashion and likewise for Mystic Merlin's storming "Just Can't Give You Up".

Review: It's another meeting of different Italian disco generations as cosmic disco veteran Daniele Baldelli and young(ish) hotshot Marco Dionigi team up for another joint EP. "Cosmic Efficacy" is a linear arpeggiated electro-disco journey to the stars, complete with electro-housey drum fills. In its "Slow Motion Remix" guise the tune is even spacier and highlights it's Moroder-isms even more. "Parallelo" on the other hand is much more abstract, with retro films samples woven over a coarse, electronic backdrop that resembles distorted cosmic interference. Far out!
