Review: The MOTU Track16 is a 16x14, FireWire/USB 2.0 studio interface with a compact desktop form factor. It offers a range of inputs and outputs, as well as effects, mixing, and monitoring. It's equipped with 8 channels of analog ins and outs including mic, line, and high-impedance instrument inputs. The analog connectors come on a 44" breakout cable, which gives you flexibility for setup and connections (an optional breakout box is also available). For digital I/O, the unit's optical ports support either eight channels of ADAT, 4 channels of SMUX optical, or 2 channels of TOSlink. MIDI in and Out jacks are also included.

Housed in a durable aluminum-alloy chassis, the Track16 supports professional-quality 24bit recording at sampling rates up to 192 kHz, and is designed with a simple and intuitive user interface. Wired remote control designed for direct access to the most frequently used actions and commands

Review: This wired Advanced Remote Control (ARC) has been designed for direct access to the most frequently used actions and commands required in a studio's daily work. Its extremely flexible configuration through TotalMix FX will simplify the workflow and greatly increase the usability of the RME interface in any real world situation.

The Advanced Remote Control (ARC) can be used with all Fireface UCX. It can also be used with all Fireface UFX with a serial number 23241707 (built after June 2011) or higher. Upcoming interfaces that feature an Advanced Remote Control connector will also be compatible. Users that own a Fireface UFX with a serial number below 23241707 have to send their UFX to their distributor as it requires a hardware modification to be fully compatible to the Advanced Remote Control.

The ARC consists of a solid metal case with a main encoder dial, 2 x push buttons and 6 x LED-equipped buttons. The Remote Control connects to the main interface via a 5m cable and a special connector on the back of both units.

Several functions can be activated at the same time. Example: button A is set to cue phones 1. That means the phones submix is heard via the main output (the studio monitors). Now to be able to also change the volume of the phones submix itself, set button B to volume phones 1. Activating both will allow you to listen to the phones submix via the main output, and also to change its volume (the fader in the third row) by turning the encoder knob.

In stand-alone mode of Fireface UCX and UFX there is no TotalMix FX on the host computer. Therefore the settings for the ARC are no longer available. Instead a fixed set of functions is activated:

Every channel can have 3-band parametric EQ, adjustable HPF, dynamics, MS processing and phase reversal. A stereo auxiliary send gives access from any channel to the reverb and delay effects engine, allowing DSP-based mininal-latency monitoring effects. There are limitations to the total number of simultaneous effects depending on sample rate, but when the DSP load is too high, the Fireface UCX will use the FX-DSP automatic overload surveillance to inform you, or deactivate some DSP, ensuring the DSP engine is never overloaded.

As well as using RME's proprietry USB and Firewire drivers, the Fireface UCX can also be used standalone, or in Class Compliant Mode. This allows the unit to be used without a driver on several operating systems including (via the Camera Connection Kit) the iPad or iPad2, making these mobile platforms capable of studio quality audio recording.
