The Electribe SX lets you sample a maximum of 285 seconds to the internal memory (142 seconds of stereo sampling), and assign the samples to the keys for a total of sixteen parts. Two can be keyboard parts, used for recording melodies or phrases, and 14 are sample parts. Each sound can be modified, and when creating your song. Up to 384 user-sampled sounds (256 monaural, 128 stereo) can be saved to internal memory.

Numerous high-powered sample techniques are available. Time Slice is a function that divides a sample automatically based on volume peaks, and lets you use these parts to create new rhythms.

The Time Stretch function uses granular technology, letting you stretch a phrase sample, synchronizing it to the pattern tempo without changing its pitch. In performance, you can keep the phrase sample synchronized while preserving its pitch, even while changing the pattern playback tempo.

You can also resample while applying effects to a previously-captured sample, or while using the knobs to modify the pitch or other parameters in realtime. Basic sampler functions are also provided. Normalizing maximizes the sample's level without allowing it to distort. Truncating deletes unused portions of the sample that occur before and after the sample's Start and End points.

Two 12AX7 vacuum tubes can be used to add more power to your sound. The tube gain knob controls the level of the output signal passing through the vacuum tubes, letting you create dynamic sounds with the distinctive tonal quality that only tubes deliver. The result is a fat, warm sound that cannot be achieved using digital technology. This is not simple "distortion," but rather a natural effect that enhances the tonal changes in your music. The master volume and tube gain controls are completely independent, allowing you to experience the Valve Force sound at any listening level.

Three stereo effects processors are available simultaneously to provide radical changes to the tone. A total of 16 effect types are available, including a cool Talking Modulator, and a Grain Shifter that lets you freeze an instant of the sound and adjust the loop interval to the tempo. Sounds can be routed independently to the three effects, or you can use the Chain function to link effects together, opening up further sonic possibilities.

Rewind and forward: When pressing the P-switch, the rewind button sets the in-point of a loop, and the forward button the end-point. To adjust
loop in and end-points, press the P-switch upwards and either of the directional buttons, then adjust the desired point on
the touchpad.

Channel 1 and Channel 2: Press left button to control channel 1, press right button to control channel 2. Full mixing functionality is available for
both channels independently. Pressing the P-switch upwards allows for toggling between time played and time left
indication in the display.

Crossfader: Set at maximum left, channel 1 is alone in line out, set at maximum right, only channel 2 is in line out, and set in the middle, both
channels are at the same line out level. Any variations hereof are of course possible blend options. Press the P-switch downwards
and the crossfader switches to control the channel blend in the headphones.

Play/pause: The play button behaves like on any other audio player, but when in Mix Mode, the pause is 'stuttering', allowing you to search and
find the appropriate place to set the cue point. When pressing the P-switch upwards, the play button reverses the play direction.

Cue: The Cue button sets the starting point for the track and can also be used to create effects. When pressing the P-switch upwards, the Cue
button enables exiting and re-entering a loop.

Touchpad: The touchpad allows you to bend a track, change EQ values and gain levels. When pressing the P-switch upwards, the touchpad
allows for controlling and setting pitch values, filter parameters and audio effect levels. When pressing the P-switch downwards,
the touchpad allows for controlling the headphones volume. The touchpad is also used to navigate the track library and the device
settings.

Settings: The Settings button lets you turn on and turn off the device. When turned on, the Settings button gives you access to the settings menu.

Kill All: The Kill All button resets all effect values to zero, and lets you relaunch effects to latest values per track and channel.

Custom designed, onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics allow variable recording patterns at either 90- or 120-. For situations where you require maximized, continuous recording operation you can select stamina mode which effectively doubles battery life, letting you record continuously for about 11 hours in 16-bit/44.1-kHz linear PCM format. The H4n is the only handheld recorder that features built-in combination XLR/Phone connectors with phantom voltage source capability. With its Hi-Z inputs, you can record guitars or other line output sources such as mixing consoles. A separate external mic input supports plug-in power microphones.

Proper miking is essential to making a great recording. The H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows recording on four channels simultaneously by using your own external mics with its onboard mics. Use its built-in mixer to blend the channels for perfectly balanced recordings of extraordinary depth and clarity. You can set your H4n to automatically record whenever sound above your designated level is detected. This ensures that you capture everything of importance while minimizing blank sections such as when recording a conference or lecture.

The H4n can also be set to continuously record the most recent two seconds of audio in memory. Now, you never miss the beginning of anything you want to record, even when it begins suddenly. Even without external software, you can divide a recorded file at any desired point, right on the H4n. A built-in normalizing feature lets you optimize the volume level, and you can convert WAV files into MP3 directly on the unit as well.

You can choose between single-song playback, single-song repeat, all-songs playback, or all-songs repeat. This is great when you want to use the H4n as a personal trainer for learning new music. A-B repeat even lets you zoom in on a specified section of a song. The H4n supports Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) used in broadcasting and other professional A/V applications. Recorded files carry time stamp information and you can set markers (cue points) during recording or playback.

A stereo input signal can be mixed down to mono to reduce unwanted sound source position shifts between right and left channels. This is ideal for recording interviews.
The built-in M/S stereo decoder allows the use of an external Mid-Side microphone setups. The H4n converts the mid and side channel signals into a conventional stereo (L/R) signal for even more versatility, and it's only found on the H4n.

The MTR mode allows simultaneous 2-track recording and 4-track playback. With this feature, creating songs by overdubbing vocals and instruments is a snap. Level and panning can be adjusted individually for each track on the built-in mixer, and you can even do a mixdown right on the H4n.

*In the MTR mode, the recording format is fixed to 16-bit/44.1kHz WAV files.
