Akai Synthstation25 Keyboard Controller
CAT: SYNTHSTATION 25
25 Oct 10
$63.95
4 x AAA battery/USB bus-powered 25-key piano keyboard MIDI controller for iPhone & iPod Touch
Review: The SynthStation25 transforms iPhone or iPod touch into a portable music production studio for mobile music creation. This MIDI keyboard controller gives your handheld device a 2-octave set of piano keys and professional audio outputs, and it works with the Akai Professional SynthStation app. The SynthStation25 is powerful enough for professional musicians, yet virtually anyone can use is to easily create music.

This 25-key synth keyboard features a built-in dock for iPhone or iPod touch. The SynthStation25 gives you two octaves of velocity-sensitive, synth-action keys, pitch and modulation wheels, and octave up and down and sound-bank buttons. The SynthStation25 has a stereo pair of RCA line outputs and a headphone output for connection to recording and sound reinforcement systems.

You can use the SynthStation25 with Akai's SynthStation Studio app as well as virtually any MIDI music software on your computer or with MIDI hardware devices such as sound modules, samplers, and MPCs using its USB/MIDI output. Analogue Solutions Leipzig S Analogue Monosynth & Analogue Sequencer (B-STOCK)
$965.75
B-STOCK: Box is tatty and has been opened but product itself is in good working order
Review: *** B-STOCK: Box is tatty and has been opened but product itself is in good working order ***

Analogue Solutions are proud to announce availability of Leipzig-S, the latest addition to its lengthening line of critically-acclaimed, quality-crafted boutique designs from founder Tom Carpenter in the true spirit of vintage analogue synthesisers befitting the true analogue synth enthusiast.

Evolving from its namesake Leipzig (rack-mounting) and Leipzig-k (keyboard-endowed) analogue monosynth predecessors, the rack-mountable/tabletop Leipzig-S literally goes several steps further by incorporating an in-built eight-step analogue sequencer that can be used to produce simple melodic lines as well as acting as a modulation source to affect the filter cutoff (or to create additional effects, depending on other control settings). VCO1, VCO2, and the VCF are all available as sequencer destinations; seemingly simple, yet favourably flexible, the step sequencer can be creatively controlled (clocked) by multiple sources, at audio frequencies (using VCO2 as a clock source), or using the output of the sequencer itself as an audio source to be played via MIDI while the eight step controls then alter the waveform/tonal content, for example, such are the adventurous advantages of packaging an analogue step sequencer with a true analogue monosynth.

The entire design is traditional early-eighties analogue (voice and modulation) circuitry, comprised entirely of discrete components and op-amps (bar, of course, the digital sequencer controller and MIDI-CV interfacing); since the Leipzig-S is a strictly no-memory affair, all controls are not quantised, resulting in an authentically vintage sound, replete with musically desirable quirks and subtle artifacts (much in the same way that, say, a valve amp or vinyl record adds sonic character), unlike some other modern analogue synths that arguably sound almost as perfect as DSP analogue modelling.

With electronic percussion having influenced the choice of routings, the Leipzig-S boasts a huge range of modulation possibilities to facilitate creating the widest possible range of sounds, including deep basses, sound effects, analogue loops and (obviously) electronic drum sounds. With this, his latest design, true analogue synth enthusiast Tom Carpenter is confident that he has achieved a modern analogue synth that truly does sound vintage.

Analogue Solutions Station Q Minimodular Sequencer (cased)
$683.85
8-step analogue sequencer
Review: The Station Q is like half an Oberkorn sequencer. It is identical to Oberkorn, except that it is 8 step instead of 16, and does not have the MIDI features. The Station Q is the perfect companion to the Station X/Y mini-modular combo.

Keyboard synthesizer
Review: The Casio XW-G1 Groove Synthesizer keyboard is designed with today's DJ in mind, incorporating step and phrase synthesizers, hands-on control and a sample looper.

The Casio XW-G1 can create and play back a variety of rhythm patterns and musical phrases, all in a single unit. Users can enjoy playing an all-in-one instrument that enables control of cool sounds via sets of nine sliders, 16 Step Sequencer buttons and four assignable knobs arranged on the left side of the top panel.

Rhythmic patterns can be sequenced end-to-end to create entire songs and grooves and then be manipulated in real time with the set of 16 buttons. The phrase sequencer lets users create and play back musical phrases that spice up DJ performances, and up to 100 musical phrases can be spontaneously played on the keyboard and be stored in memory as user phrases.

The sample looper in the Casio XW-G1 digitally records any sound and this can be overdubbed to build up complete grooves with ease. Sampled sounds that are saved as user tones can be played in keyboard performances and looped to create original on-the-fly music. 420 preset tones including Solo Synthesizer and PCM tones can be quickly accessed in keyboard performances and the arpeggiator can automatically spice up melodies just by pressing keys.

Circuitbenders Dub Siren
CAT: DUB SIREN

$110.92
Simple synthesizer with a single oscillator analogue with LFO
Review: The machine essentially consists of a single oscillator analogue synth with LFO, all controlled by 2 x switches, 1 x button and 4 x knobs.

The controls consist of:

Trigger switch & button: The top switch selects between a constantly running siren, and only having the siren running when you press the red trigger button. In either case, whenever the siren is running the top ultra bright blue LED lights up.

LFO depth: This is the top left knob. Unsurprisingly it controls the depth of the siren LFO

LFO speed: This is the bottom left knob. The LFO can run fast enough to produce audio frequencies for some bizarre throbbing tones.

Siren pitch: The top right knob controls the pitch of the siren from the bass heavy bottom to ear splitting top end. With the LFO depth set to zero this knob will control the pitch of the steady oscillator tone.

Alteration knob & switch: The lower switch turns the alteration knob on and off, this knob performs various functions. When the alteration knob is engaged and fully anti-clockwise the LFO depth knob then controls the LFO waveform shape, smoothly morphing from a squarewave to the normal triangle wave. As the alteration knob turned clockwise the LFO triangle waveform slowly morphs into a kind of curved ramp shape. The alteration knob also subtly adjusts the speed and depth of the LFO depending on the settings of the other knobs. With some practice this control can produce a very wide range of siren sounds.

The machine also features an ultra bright blue LED that flashes in time with the LFO sweep and round the back there is a 1/4" jack output with an output volume knob. The machine runs on an external 9V power supply which is not included but just about any halfway decent supply will do.

Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Desktop Synthesizer Module
$331.49
monophonic analog synthesizer
Review: The Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Desktop Synthesiser Module is a compact and affordable but powerful monophonic analog synth.

The voice architecture is identical to the single voice of the Prophet '08, but with a couple of unique twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. They've have added 2 sub-octave generators, one per oscillator, for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk.

The push it button is a manual trigger that lets you play a specific note or latch notes and sequences on. It can also step through a sequence to play short melodic lines without a keyboard. Of course, the Mopho can also be used with a MIDI controller or external sequencer.

The Mopho is fully programmable and all the parameters can be tweaked from the front panel. The 4 assignable parameters controls are assignable per program for optimum performance control. A free editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming. (If you already have a Prophet '08, most of the Mopho's parameters can be controlled from the Prophet's front panel via MIDI).

The Mopho is perfect for people who want to learn the inputs and outputs of real analog synthesis without spending a bundle, DJs looking to add some old school sonic spice to their setups and musicians who will appreciate a great-sounding, very portable mono synth.

Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard Analog Synthesizer

Keyboard version of the Mopho monophonic analog synthesizer
Review: The Dave Smith Instruments Mopho Keyboard synthesizer is a much requested keyboard version of the popular Mopho monophonic analog synthesizer. This offers the same compact, affordable and powerful functions as its brother but with more knobs, switches and of course, a 32-note weighted keyboard.

The voice architecture of the Mopho is identical to a single voice of the Prophet '08, but with a couple of unique twists. DSI have added 2 sub-octave generators, one per oscillator for additional girth and crushing bass. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho's own audio output back in pre-filtered for feedback effects that range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk.

The DSI Mopho is fully programmable and all parameters can be tweaked from the front panel making this version a lot easier than its little brother. You can also expand the voicing of the Mopho by combining it with the Tetra synthesiser, giving you 5-voices at your disposal. The Mopho is perfect for people who want to learn analog synthesis without spending a fortune.
Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08 PE Desktop Synthesizer Module (DSI1118)
$1341.63
Tabletop synthesizer module with rack-mount hardware
Review: The Prophet '08 synthesizer module is a tabletop knobby module with all of the features and controls of the Prophet '08 Keyboard (minus the keyboard, of course) in an even more compact enclosure. With real analog oscillators, famed Curtis low-pass filters, and analog VCAs, the Prophet '08 is capable of reproducing the familiar sounds of its legendary predecessors. But modern features like a greatly expanded modulation matrix and additional modulation sourcesilike three envelopes and 4 LFOs per voiceitake it way beyond the vintage gear and make this a worthy and unique addition to the Prophet family tree.

Features include a gated 16 x 4 step sequencer, arpeggiator, split or stacked key modes with separate stereo outputs per layer, and rack ears for optional rack-mounting. The Prophet '08 module can also be used as an expander to increase the polyphony of another Prophet '08ikeyboard or moduleito 16 voices.
Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08 PE Keyboard Synthesizer DSI-2128
$1864.78
Review: The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08 Pot Edition 8-voice analog synthesizer offers an alternative with 38 of the 52 front panel parameters controlled by pots (potentiometers); rotary encoders are still used for the remainder of the controls.

The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08 Pot Edition is exactly the same as the non-pot version. The difference is strictly in the controls themselves. Encoders are endless, they have no minimum or maximum limit. The advantage to that is that when you edit a preset parameter, the change begins at the preset value and increases or decreases, depending upon the direction turned.

Pots typically have about 270- of travel and have definite limits. The advantage to that is that you know, by feel, where the minimum and maximum limits are and you can sweep through the entire value range in less than one full turn.

The Prophet '08 PE features 3 edit modes for the pots: Relative, Passthru, and Jump. In relative mode, the value change is relative to the preset value. In passthru mode, turning the pot has no effect until after the edited value equals the preset value (that is, until the edited value passes through the stored value). Jump mode uses an absolute value based upon the position of the pot when edited; turn a pot and the value jumps immediately from the stored value to the edited value.
Dave Smith Instruments Tetra Desktop Synthesizer Module
$670.81
Review: The Tetra is Dave Smith Instruments' next-generation analog poly synth. It takes the award-winning sound and features of Mopho, multiplies them by 4 and packs them in a box less than half an inch larger.

The Tetra has multiple personalities. It is a 4-voice, analog poly synth, a sort of mini Prophet. It's a 4-part, multitimbral synth with separate outputs, essentially 4 Mophos in one very compact box.

Physically, the Tetra is similar to Mopho, with 4 assignable parameter controls per program and a row of controls dedicated to the most commonly used performance parameters. All of the parameters can be accessed from the front panel and the Tetra is fully programmable. A free, downloadable editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate more comprehensive tweaking.

Most of the rotary controls are detented encoders, but Cutoff and Resonance are potentiometers, allowing full sweeps with a single turn. The Push It button is a manual trigger to play notes and latch sequences on without the need for a MIDI controller.

Audio is output in mono, stereo or per voice, via the four audio output jacks. There is also a headphone out. MIDI communication is by standard MIDI in and out jacks or USB. Poly Chain Out is a special, dedicated MIDI output to chain multiple instruments for increased polyphony.

The voice architecture is based on the Prophet '08, but with the addition of a sub-octave generator for each oscillator and a fully programmable feedback loop for each voice. That breaks down to 2 DCOs, a resonant low-pass filter, 3 DADSR envelope generators, four LFOS, deep modulation routing, an arpeggiator and a 16 x 4 analog-style step sequencer per voice. Feedback is capable of producing effects ranging from mild distortion to fairly extreme harmonic instability. (That's a good thing.) The possibilities are nearly endless. And the audio signal path is 100 analog.

In program mode, the Tetra is a 4-voice, polyphonic synthesizer with four banks of 128 programs. As with the Prophet '08, each program contains two layersieach layer is essentially a separate patchithat can be used to create keyboard splits or stacked sounds. Banks 1 and 2 are the Prophet '08 factory programs; banks 3 and 4 are a combination of Mopho and new programs.

In combo mode, a different program can be assigned to each of the 4 voices. Combos can be used for mammoth unison patches or for triggering up to 4 different 16 x 4 sequencesieach with its own programisimultaneously. Combos can also be used to create modular-style polyphonic patches, where each voice plays a different program, with a slight variation on the same sound or even a drastically different sound.

In multi mode, the Tetra becomes a multitimbral sound module capable of playing four monophonic parts on four MIDI channels, with separate outputs for each voice. Coupled with a MIDI sequencer and DAW, the Tetra can play complex arrangements or analog drum parts with each part individually processed and recorded to its own track.

Up to 4 Tetras can be poly chained for 8, 12, or 16 voices total. When used with a Prophet '08, up to 2 Tetras can be poly chained for a maximum of sixteen voices. In addition, the Prophet's front panel controls map directly to almost all of Tetra's parameters, so the Prophet acts as a programmer and control surface. And a Mopho can be connected to Tetra's Poly Chain Out for five-voice operation.

Korg M50 Workstation Synthesizer (61 key model)
$1042.76
61-key model keyboard synthesizer
Review: The Korg M50 is a brilliant new synthesizer distilling the sonic essence and functionality of the M3 series into a seriously portable and affordable new instrument.

Korg's over 20 years of design expertise in workstations has enabled Korg to make the M50 the perfect writing and performing keyboard for all musicians. The M50 is packed with the latest sounds and functionality that Korg have developed in their many years of producing synthesizers and music workstations.

It features a light-weight compact design that makes it ideal for live performance, band practice, and especially easy transportation. The 88-note M50-88 uses the grand piano feeling RH3 keyboard, making it an ideal choice for a stage piano.

The M50 uses Korg's latest EDS (Enhanced Definition Synthesis) sound generation system, the technology used on the M3, delivering exactly the same stunning sounds and effects. Each voice contains a powerful oscillator section that can use up to 8 stereo multisamples per voice (2 oscillators, each with 4-stage velocity switching/crossfading/layering), as well as up to 4 filters (2 filters each with four modes and four routings), 2 amps, 5 LFOs, and 5 EGs.

The abundant 256 MB of ROM (when calculated as 16-bit linear) provides a total of 1077 multisamples (including 7 stereo multisamples) sampled at 48kHz as well as 1609 drum samples (including 116 stereo drum samples). These PCM sources were sampled using the best recording equipment and edited with expert care to deliver an incredible palette to create sounds with.

The filter section lets you use 2 filters for each oscillator. These filter types include low pass, high pass, band pass, and band reject modes, and they can be routed individually, in series or in parallel, and even includes a superb 24 dB mode.

The amp section provides a driver circuit that can bring a harder edge to your sound, and a low boost to add big bottom when needed.

An advanced key tracking generator can be used to adjust filter and amp behavior according to ranges of the keyboard, giving sounds a level of nuanced control across the whole range of the keyboard.

The EG (Envelope Generators) produce time-variant change from the beginning to the end of the sound, and allow you to tweak the curve at each stage (attack, decay, slope, release) in eleven steps, and unprecedented amount of control. This enables the M50 to create simulations of acoustic sounds where the tone and volume undergo complex time-variant changes, as well as highly detailed re-creations of vintage synthesizer sounds. There are 18 LFO waveforms available for you to select from. These can be further shaped to produce the perfect modulation by adjusting parameters such as the waveform starting phase and amplitude shift.

The AMS (Alternate Modulation Source) function gives you a wealth of modulation possibilities; with a total of fifty modulation sources, you can be sure to find what you need, or use the AMS mixer to apply multiple modulation sources to a single parameter, or even process the modulation source itself to obtain precise control over your sound design.

There's an independent 3-band EQ available for each program, the drum track, and each of the sixteen timbres/tracks, so you can make separate and detailed tonal adjustments to achieve the perfect mix without having to use effects. The effect section which adds the final coloration and space to the overall sound contains 5 insert effects, 2 master effects, and 1 total effect. In addition to delay and reverb, you can use modulation-type effects such as chorus, phaser, and flanger, dynamic-type effects such as a compressor and limiter, and amp modeling effects driven by Korg's proprietary REMS modeling technology, giving you a total of 170 high-quality effects. There are also 2 common LFOs that can be used between different modulation effects. For example you can use a single LFO to synchronize the phaser and flanger used by different timbres. The effect dynamic modulation function (Dmod) gives you precise and wide-ranging realtime control over tonal changes and effects.

The M50 contains 608 programs, 384 combinations each consisting of up to sixteen programs, and 32 drum kits used as oscillators for drum programs. From real acoustic instrument to vintages synths and imaginative textures the M50 delivers the wide range of great sounds you expect from a Korg keyboard.

For the all-important piano sounds, 3-stage velocity-switched stereo samples are programmed in conjunction with samples of the damper resonance, producing the most natural sound ever heard from a synthesizer. There are also mono piano programs for use on stage, as well as programs using the waveform memory of the classic Korg SG-1 Sampling Grand, which is still acclaimed by artists around the world.

$442.42
Review: The original microKORG is loved and used daily by musicians around the world U from keyboardists to guitarists U enabling everyone to experience the enjoyment of a great synthesizer. Now an advanced microKORG is available; a synthesizer that lets you generate your own personal sound, packing a cutting-edge sound engine and powerful effects into a compact, vintage-like body.

The microKORG has continued to be a best-seller since its arrival five years ago, and remains enormously popular today. This latest model boasts Korg's powerful RADIAS/R3 derived MMT Multi Modeling Technology, as well as a powered-up vocoder. The updated ROM includes PCM data for recreating in-demand vintage keyboards such as piano, electric piano, and clav. Externally, the microKORG XL boasts a completely new vintage design with a textured black body and industrial silver panel. The interface has also been enhanced, making it easier than ever to use. Sound selection is controlled by two large dials; three smaller knobs allow the main parameters to be easily selected. The newly-developed mini-keyboard is firm and responsive for even greater playability. And best of all, it's battery-powered so you can take it anywhere and still enjoy serious sound. For beginners, advanced musicians and sound designers, this is a synthesizer that will stimulate your musical creativity.

Korg's MMT engine provides a compendium of Korg's various modeling technologies, offering a robust range of sounds U including great analog re-creations. Korg's famed MMT is the same high-fidelity synthesis that powers our RADIAS, R3, and ElecTribe MX, optimized to provide the microKORG XL with phenomenal performance. The microKORG XL uses two MMT oscillators to generate powerful sounds. Oscillator 1 (OSC1) provides not only the standard waveforms you expect from an analog synthesizer, but a total of seven types of oscillator algorithms, including formant waveforms such as human voice, noise, and PCM/DWGS waveforms such as vintage keyboards and strings. Cross-modulation, unison, and VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) let you create sounds that would be impossible for a conventional PCM synthesizer. Oscillator 2 (OSC2) can be used for modulation (sync or ring) in conjunction with the first oscillator, making it easy to create complex and powerful sounds.

Two multi-mode filters, a drive/waveshaping circuit for distinctively distorted sounds, and EG and LFO for creating time-varying tonal change, provide plenty of parameters for serious synthesis. Virtual Patching simulates the patching capability of Korg's classic MS series, and the arpeggiator can run six types of patterns, all adding up to a high degree of creative freedom. There's also an external audio input jack, so you can process external audio material from a sampler or other source device. In the full-edit mode you have unlimited access to all of the microKORG XL's synthesis parameters.

Using a microphone, the microKORG XL's amazing vocoder allows you to add vocal characteristics to any sound, creating everything from "talk-box" filtering, pseudo choirs, talking instruments and vintage Sci-Fi robots. You can also use another instrument U such as a drum machine U to add rhythmic dexterity to your synth tracks. Our unique Formant Hold allows you to freeze the vocal input for continuous vocoder effects. In addition to simulating the classic vocoder sounds of the past, the microKORG XL also allows you to shift the filter frequencies (Formant Shift function) and adjust the level and pan of each of the sixteen bands, greatly altering the tonal character. This allows you to easily create fascinating textures and sounds that go far beyond traditional vocoding. A gooseneck microphone is included, so you can immediately start using these superb vocoder functions.
Korg MicroSAMPLER Sampling Keyboard
CAT: MICROSAMPLER

$319.75
Keyboard sampler
Review: The Korg microSAMPLER is a keyboard sampler that lets you enjoy easy-to-use full-featured sampling, a loop sequencer, and internal effects; all with an intuitive interface that's designed for realtime performance. Korg's unique sampling method allows you to record, edit and map as you sample, directly from the keyboard.

The microSAMPLER is designed for performance. In addition to triggering samples as on a conventional pad-type sampler, you can also play the samples at different pitches in a musical fashion, and even resample the result. The controllers you need for an exciting performance are laid out on the panel for intuitive operation. The status of the samples assigned to each key (and the item being edited) is indicated by the lit state of the LEDs running along the top of the keyboard, ensuring excellent visibility even on stage. Both line input and mic input are provided to allow a broad range of input sources including electronic musical instruments, CD, and voice. A gooseneck microphone is included so you can sample on the go. To make it easy to sample from your portable audio player, a convenient caddy is located beside the mic jack.

The microSAMPLER can run on batteries, so you can perform on the go, or capture samples anywhere. In addition, there's a resampling function that lets you play existing layered samples processed by an effect and played by the loop sequencer, and capture it all as a new sample. Since you can even sample while playing, the sampling process itself can become part of your expressive performance.

The MicroSAMPLER features 5 sampling methods to suit your needs. When sampling, you can select One Shot, Gate, or Loop methods; this greatly enhances the realtime character of your performance. In addition, you can use 2 completely new sampling methods Key Gate and Auto Next to sample more efficiently and creatively than ever.

One Shot sampling for single hits: this mode is for creating samples that do not require a note-off, such as drums and orchestra hits.
Gate sampling for keyboard performance: this mode is best for creating instrument sounds that will be played back at different pitches on the keyboard.
Loop sampling for recording grooves and phrases: this mode is ideal for sampling looped phrases such as drums or vocals.
Key Gate sampling is best for grabbing multiple samples from the same source: with Key Gate you can take multiple samples from the same source or phrase and assign them to different keys as the source plays. The individual keys assign the sample and enable recording all at the same time. This intuitive method of sampling, editing and mapping in a single step is fun, intuitive and fast. Auto Next sampling for automatically capturing phrases as multiple samples: for grabbing a groove as separate samples on individual keys, choose the Auto Next mode and use Tap Tempo to match the BPM of the source material.

The microSAMPLER will automatically divide the sample equally across multiple keys. Each key can be set to capture anything from a 64th note to a full 2 measures. This method lets you automatically perform the same type of sampling as Key Gate.

The microSAMPLER hosts a solid complement of top-end sampling features such as 16-voice polyphony, reverse playback, editing operations such as Normalize and Truncate, and a Time Stretch feature that lets you change the tempo without affecting the pitch. Selectable sample rates of 48 kHz, 24 kHz, 12 kHz down to 6 kHz let you sample at rates beyond CD clarity or add in that Lo-Fi vintage vibe. And yet the microSAMPLER is also designed to be easy to operate. Each bank contains 36 samples (a maximum of approximately 160 seconds of recording time for monaural samples at a 48 kHz sampling rate) and sixteen patterns of sequence data; the microSAMPLER lets you store eight such banks in internal memory. The pattern sequencer uses an overdub operating style that lets you continually layer your performances. You can switch between patterns during playback for seamless performances. Up to 16 patterns (16000 notes per pattern or a maximum 64000) can be stored in each bank. 21 effect algorithms produce powerful sonic transformations: developed for Korg's KAOSS PAD series, the effect engine serves up a great selection of effects, so important when editing samples. The twenty-one effects include not only traditional delay and chorus, but also ring modulator and grain shifter, and even a Looper that's derived from the Loop Recording feature of the KAOSSILATOR Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer.

MFB Kraftzwerg Semi Modular Analog Synthesizer
$573.65
Review: The MFB Kraftzwerg is the semi-modular version of MFB's Synth-II. It trades off memory locations and MIDI-control for 37 patch connectors which allow breaking and modifying of the internal routing. Put single Kraftzwerg components under analog sequencer control or let the whole unit interact with your existing modular synthesizer system. 'Kraftzwerg' works as a stand-alone synthesizer without the need to patch any cable. The classic formation of VCO-VCF-VCA is pre-wired internally, complete with essential modulations. Therefore, you can play the Kraftzwerg just like any other synthesizer using its MIDI-input. In addition, it may integrate into a full analog environment using control voltages and benefit, unlike MIDI, from infinite continuous parameter resolution.

The MFB Kraftzwerg offers a complete set for powerful and versatile synthesis: 3 VCOs with hard-sync, 24-dB-lowpass-filter with resonance, noise generator, ring-modulator, 2 envelope-generators, 2 LFOs and VCA. Technically and soundwise the MFB Kraftzwerg is identical to MFB's euro-rack-modules. However, this comes in a compact format which is easy to take with you and faster in use. Your ideal analog partner on stage.
MFB Megazwerg Semi Modular Analogue Synthesizer
$471.21
Review: Although the Megazwerg and its many useful functions are meant to serve as an expansion to MFB's Kraftzwerg or any analogue modular-system, the Megazwerg also serves as an independent full-featured synthesizer. Its ten sections can be used individually or combined.

The oscillator offers triangle, saw tooth and rectangle waveform shapes. Its pitch can be set over an octave range using a trim-pot. Pitch is controlled by its CV-input using sequencers or keyboards. The output is prewired to the Y-input of the ring modulator, which is built analogue unlike the unit found in Kraftzwerg. The ring modulator may also be used with two external signals.

The state-variable multimode-filter runs with 12 dB slope per octave and offers Lo-, Hi- and Bandpass-modes as well as notch-filtering and resonance up to self-oscillation. Both, cutoff and resonance can be modulated using dedicated CV-inputs. In addition, a pitch-dependent cutoff-frequency control can be achieved using the key follow function. Key follow is prewired to key-CV respectively MIDI-pitch.

The envelope generator offers Attack, Hold, Decay, Sustain and Release stages. Besides its normal mode, the first three stages can also be looped with an active gate-signal, and then followed by the release stage. This section also contains a VCA that serves as CV-controllable audio-output for MEGAZWERG. The envelope is prewired to the CV-input of the VCA.

The onboard 12bit-digital-delay does not only create echo-effects. Its read-out-speed can be varied over a 2-octave-range manually or by CV. In addition, there is a freeze function that sets the effect signal to last endlessly. Send and return jacks are provided to insert any module into the delay's feedback-path, just like a filter or a ring modulator.

The modulation-sequencer serves to create simple, adjustable rhythmic modulations of 2, 3 or 4 steps in length. Each step has a dedicated control to set the according control voltage. The sequence tempo can be adjusted with the sequence or follow the clock-input.

The dual Glide section offers two independent delay/lag units with different characteristics. You may use these to smooth the steps of the modulation-sequence or create portamento glides.

Two attenuators are available in the Dual-Attenuator-Section. In excess of limiting audio- and control-signals, these units can also serve as CV-sources. With the input not being patched, the output sends a fixed control voltage of up to 8V. This can be used to increase the maximum speed of Kraftzwerg's LFO or set the VCO-pulse width to a constant value.

The mixer section offers three inputs, where only inputs 1 and 2 are variable in gain.

2 multiples allow doubling or tripling CV- or audio-signals. Essential, where one LFO needs to modular two or three targets.

The signal-path VCO-VCF-VCA as well as envelope control over the VCA is internally prewired, so that Megazwerg can be played immediately. All further routings are created using the patch jacks. These can be used or controlled by the Megazwerg itself or any compatible external device.

MFB Urzwerg Pro Sequencer
CAT: URZWERG PRO
06 Jun 11
$477.48
32-step step sequencer
Review: The MFB Urzwerg Pro step-sequencer has been inspired by feature requests and suggestions of many users to ensure better flexibility than ever. Most prominently, it offers output of MIDI-notes and MIDI-controllers as well as 32 individual step LEDs to keep track of the sequences status.

The MFB Urzwerg Pro offers 32 steps that can either be used for 2 sequences with up to 16 steps each or with 4 sequences with up to 8 steps each. You may control up to 4 synthesizers or CV-controllable parameters in an analogue modular system simultaneously. Using the MIDI-output allows to address 4 separate synthesizers or multitimbral parts in a single synthesizer. In addition, you may play your MIDI-synth with 2, 3 or voices polyphony. When playing it duo-phonically, the 2 remaining tracks can be used to control velocity and mod-wheel-data (MIDI-CC 01). Using it with 3 polyphonic voices still allows for velocity control.

In 4 x 8 mode, the MFB Urzwerg Pro can control up to 4 individual Nanozwerg synths using CV/Gate. As another example, you can also control and individually modulate pitch, pulse width, filter-cutoff and LFO-speed in MFB's Kraftzwerg. Finally, using Urzwerg Pro in combination with a modular synthesizer-system will allow for even more versatile options. The Urzwerg Pros Gate/CV inputs are fully compatible to all common eurorack-format modular systems.

The use of MIDI allows similar applications as using CV/Gate connections but will add further functionality. Sounds can be played polyphonically with up to 4 voices. Using Urzwerg Pro duo-phonically or as dual-monophonic, you can use the remaining 2 MIDI-controllers to output velocity and mod-wheel-data in parallel with the first 2 tracks. In a CV/Gate-based synthesizer, all parameters with CV input can be addressed directly. On the contrary, MIDI-control through Urzwerg Pro always also depends on the routing-options of the connected instrument.

The MFB Urzwerg Pro was designed for intuitive operation. All functions feature designated controls for editing while the sequencer is running. For best overview, the Urzwerg Pro features LEDs per step. These LEDs do not only visualize the sequence current position but also the skip-buttons' status. While setting the MIDI-channel and the operating modes, these LEDs also function as a display.

When using the MFB Urzwerg Pro on stage, you can set, edit and remove steps live. In addition, you can also modify the sequences' directions and their individual lengths. As a new feature, the Urzwerg Pro has a random-function to playback a row's steps at random. Another novelty is the auto-glide-function.

Furthermore, the MFB Urzwerg Pro allows setting of independent gate-lengths, ranges and glides for rows 1/2 and 3/4. Range defines the CV-range for the step-knobs between 1-10V. For pitch control, the range up to 5V can be quantized. MFB have added 4 different scalings to choose from: semitones, whole tones, pentatonic and hexatonic.

All 4 rows feature skip-buttons per step to activate/deactivate gate-triggers for these positions. Alternatively, the skip-buttons can also deactivate the CV-step-control. To add more liveliness, the Urzwerg Pro also offers 2 optimized shuffle-modes.

The MFB Urzwerg Pro provides 4 Gate & CV outputs to control compatible analogue synthesizers and modular systems. Start-I/O and Clock-I/O allow Urzwerg Pro to be synchronized to and sync other analogue sequencers. The additional CV-Clock input allows for dynamic tempo-control, e.g. using an external LFO or a CV-controller. To sync Urzwerg Pro via MIDI, the unit can send and receive start/stop-commands as well as MIDI-clock. In addition, it is possible to transpose sequences and address individual steps using a MIDI-keyboard or DAW.
Mode Machines xOxbOx Socksbox Synthesizer
$649.93
TB-303 Clone with red LEDs
Review: Original Clone of the famous Roland TB-303 but with additional features such as MIDI and USB. We build these machines by hand in Germany.

The x0xbox (spoken: Socksbox) is an original concept from MIT students, who set their goal to produce a real 303 clone, which had to be 100 like the original. They took a 303 apart and by using "reverse engineering" and passion they managed to recreate a true clone , also by using much of the original circuitry and original parts. For those parts, which are not available any more, they technically found a way around this problem by using alternative parts and design but with the same features. Weeks and weeks were used to source the original parts worldwide and good alteratives were sourced. The x0xbox does not only copy all electronic circuits of the 303, furthermore it also uses all critical and necessary components of the original Bassline, such as matched pairs of the 2SC2291, the LA4140 op amp and 2SC536F transistors.

The difference of a well made x0xb0x and a Roland TB-303 is probably the same difference as from a TB-303 and another TB-303.
Moog Etherwave Plus Theremin & Controller (ash)
$559.88
Fully assembled theremin in ash cabinet, can also be used as a stand-alone CV controller
Review: The Etherwave Plus has all the great features and tone of Moog's standard Etherwave theremin.

The Etherwave Plus makes it an ideal controller and performance instrument.

The CV outputs control signals are proportional to the pitch and volume of the Theremin's audio signal. Connect to the pitch and volume CV inputs of a Little Phatty, Voyager or other analog synthesizer for a completely new way to play your synth. These CV signals are not limited to pitch and volume control. Route them to any CV destination and create a new world of expression. Control anything from the cutoff frequency of a Moog Ladder Filter or the LFO Amount on a Moogerfooger Ring Modulator to the stereo panning on a Minimoog Voyager.
