Review: Three years on from their last full-length excursion - the fine Borough 2 Borough on Delusions of Grandeur - Craig Smith and The Revenge return with their third 6th Borough Project album. Predictably, it's a fine set, with the duo tweaking their now familiar blueprint - think sample heavy, Balearic-minded deep house built around killer grooves and impeccable production - to guarantee a slightly more eclectic listening experience. So, while there are moments of locked-in dancefloor hypnotism - see "The Weight" and acid-gospel thump of "Tainted Dub" - they're accompanied by trips into wide-eyed, loved-up two-step territory (brilliant closer "Back Where It All Began"), seductive, synth-heavy dreaminess (Paul Joseph hook-up "Find Your Rhythm"), intoxicating downtempo chuggers ("Someday"), and much more besides.

Review: Luca Trevisi is LTJ Xperience, an Italian producer who began his career in the 1980s. As resident DJ at two of the most famous Italian clubs of the time: Kinky in Bologna and Cap Creus in Imola, he was one of the first Italian jocks to spin house and to reintroduce black music, jazz and latin-bossa classics from the '70s. These are the kind of tracks that gave birth to the acid jazz and rare groove movements. The Beggar Groove LP is his new album, the fourth dedicated to the 'research' of disco/funk, from its origins to today's rhythms feelings on the dancefloor. The smooth acid jazz of the opening track "Way Down" would make even Ludovic Navarre stand up and notice, while soulful and compelling deep funk of "Fooling You" can equally impress. According to the label, the title track of the album is the most demand track by the artist and never released digitally until now.

Review: Aussie adventurer Tornado Wallace seems to be getting better with age. Over recent years, he's delivered a string of brilliantly evocative, sun-kissed releases for the likes of ESP Institute, Beats In Space and Second Circle. Lonely Planet is his debut album, and it could well be his strongest release to date. The seven tracks are dreamy, trippy and atmospheric - we'd expect nothing less - and draw on a far wider palette of Balearic influences than we've heard on previous experiences. Coupled with a new-found desire to include more live instrumentation (particularly glistening, Peter Green style guitar passages, drums and exotic flutes), the result is an album that's as evocative, dreamy and humid as anything he's produced to date. In other words, it's a great album and comes highly recommended.

Review: Given his impressive track record, hopes are naturally high for Bonobo's sixth album, Migration, which is his first full-length since 2013. Happily, it's a majestic affair, with the producer delivering another sumptuous set of tracks. It was partly inspired by an extended period musing on the nature of personal identity, and the role that nationality plays in that. This concept is translated via thoughtful lyrics, and songs that draw musical influence from the four corners of the globe. It's not a big stylistic leap, of course - his bread and butter remains yearning, emotion-rich downtempo music built around gently jazzy grooves and impeccable live instrumentation - but given that few artists do it better than Bonobo, we'll forgive him for that.

Are You Mad? Cause I'm Not Mad... - (7:39) 124 BPM

Review: The genius of Baba Stiltz productions - aside from their consistent high quality, of course - has always been their eccentric unpredictability. His latest EP for Studio Barnhus - his first for the Swedish label since the tail end of 2015 - sticks to this script. Across the five tracks, you'll hear tactile and dreamy deep house bliss ("Snowwhite"), future R&B-informed vocal synth-pop ("Baby"), bubbly, sun-kissed synthesizer Balearica ("Freeeze"), and hypnotic, loved-up tech-house brilliance (the superb "Are You Mad? Cause I'm Not Mad"). Arguably most impressive of all, though, is the humid "XXX200003", which gently rises on waves of marimba melodies, African-influenced percussion, and fireside-hot chords.

Review: The first compilation on Koze's Pampa label is a lovingly curated affair. It starts with the left field house of Herbert's take on Lianne La Havas and Ada's r&b-infused "You & Me", as well as DJ Koze's own hymnal take on Roman Flugel's "9 Years". Other Pampa regulars like Axel Boman are well represented and he provides the ultra-mellow "In The Dust of This Planet". Equally though, Koze also provides a platform for newcomers to the fold. There's the utterly bizarre, glitch-hop of Nasrawi and Funskstorung's contributions, and at the other end of the spectrum, wide-eyed deep house from Mount Kimbie and Jamie xx & Kosi Kos' pumping indie-dance "Come We Go".

Review: Although they've delivered plenty of fine singles over the years, it's invariably Session Victim's albums that get us hot under the collar. This is primarily because it gives them a chance to showcase a wider range of grooves, tempos and instrumentations amongst the ear-pleasing dancefloor workouts. Their sunny disposition, noted sample-spotting ability and varied inspirations are all in evidence on the German duo's third full-length excursion. It's a deliciously evocative, enjoyable and mood enhancing affair that smilingly meanders between dreamy jazz-house bliss, Bossa-Balearic fusion, disco-sampling cheeriness, glistening slow jams, Afro-tinged deep house warmth and humid dub riddims (the impeccable "Castle For Sale"). In other words, it's another hugely enjoyable romp packed full of winning moments.

Review: Three years on from his first Talamanca System collaboration with Tuff City Kids duo Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer, Mark Barrott gets the gang back together for an album of typically loved-up excursions. International Feel's eccentric press release describes it as "a sunburned imagination of a day and night spent on Ibiza during a moment in time that probably never was". Given the album's repeated nods to baggy, piano-laden Italian house, the saucer-eyed, sunrise-friendly brilliance of 808 State's "Pacific State", sun-kissed post Italo-disco chuggers, percussion-laden tropical workouts and head-in-the-clouds ambience, it's actually rather an apt description. It's shamelessly Balearic from start to finish, but pulls it off with an authenticity that others could only dream of.

Review: Having sold out on vinyl at the tail end of 2016, it's heartening to see Pyschemagik's epic Ritual Chants compilation series finally appear on digital download. As the title suggests, Beach is the most laidback, loved-up and Balearic of the three collections, and contains all manner of weird, wonderful and evocative fare - most of which is suitably obscure and hard-to-find. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the reggae-goes-cosmic trip of Tony Wilson's "Hangin' Out In Space", and fuzzy, calypso-rock bounce of Adrian Gurvitz's "New World", to the eccentric Balearic disco shuffle of Amini's "Habibi" and quirky electro-boogie silliness of Danny Boy's "Discomix", a 1983 Dutch release that's guaranteed to put smiles on the faces of even the grumpiest dancers.

Review: For all his skills as a DJ - and, let's face it, he pretty much created the Afro-cosmic DJ style all on his own - Daniele Baldelli's productions have not always hit the mark. It's heartening to report, then, that this collaboration with Dario Piana for Leng Records is arguably the best thing he's produced to date. "Infinity Machine", where wild, effects-laden Clavinet lines, jammed-out electric piano chords and meandering synthesizer solos ride a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline, sets the tone magnificently, before the Italian duo jogs towards dub disco territory on the percussion rich "If You Drive". Badlelli's love of spacey synths, crunchy guitars and tactile synth bass comes to the fore on closer "Air Vibes", which also boasts a wonderfully tactile breakdown.

Review: Hailing from Ecuador, Nicola Cruz is a mysterious producer whose fine work tends to appear on esteemed label Multi Culti. Here is back with more occultish offerings (to the gods), four in fact, all of which will have you feeling light headed and possibly even aroused. Spiritually of course. "Tzantza" opens as nocturnal shuffle in the jungle, kind of like an organic body music. Elsewhere "Bruzo" mixes off-kilter rhythms and cut ups tribal chants, "Danza De Vision" is a livelier affair that's adds pan pipes and electronic bleeps to the mix and "Rio Branco" is a linear fusion of minimal percussion.

Review: Aussie balearic house larrikin Dreems returns on Montreal's Multi Culti: a label that he's actually co-owner of. The Running Mate EP like its name may suggest does indeed feature a bunch of great collaborations that result in some fantastic jams. First up he teams up with label boss Thomas Von Party on the title track where acid house meets the native sound of Down Under via its droney didgeridoo solos. He also teams up with Lithuanian-Israeli nomad DJ OI on a couple of tracks; our favourite was the latin infused slo-mo house epic "Kamp Krusty". Jagma is rumoured to be another Aussie who collaborates on home turf on "Bilbio Bush Baby" a dusty deep house track with esoteric elements.

Review: Sao Paulo deep house producer Xique-Xique's Xaxoeira EP was originally released in 2014 but now sees a deserved vinyl release. Starting out with the very All Day I Dream-ish "1542" which is complete with lush xylophone melodies, woozy synths and smooth beats, he's then into the slow burning title track, which comes complete with cosmic atmosphere and sultry French vocals; just perfect for drifting. Ecuador's Nicola Cruz delivers a fine remix, staying on the same Lee Burridge style vibe of the first track and is perfect for an open air rooftop party near you next Summer.

Review: Having spent much of 2016 focusing on the 20th anniversary of his impressive Freerange label, Jamie "Jimpster" Odell returns with his long-awaited sixth full-length, his first album since 2013's much admired Porchlight & Rocking Chairs. As you might expect, Silent Stars is a musically expansive affair, with the producer's usual floor-friendly deep house workouts being accompanied by tracks that pay homage to starry jazz-funk (brilliant opener "Migrations"), synthesizer-heavy new age ambient (the wonderful "Sylvanshine"), loose and languid Balearica (Jinadau collaboration "The Sun Comes Up"), Floating Points Ensemble style jazz ("Tau Tona"), modern soul ("Everytime") and even a touch of Osunlade style tribal bounce ("Silent Stars"). In other words, it's superb.

Review: Ever reliable Canadian producer Fred Everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the Lazy Days label. On the A-side he's taking to Crazy P's "Like A Fool" a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original's warm, disco-infused elements. On the flip, he takes on Roach Motel's "The Night" and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. By way of variety the final track sees Fred create a laid back Balearic, auto-tuned version of Franky Selector's "Wind Swept Dune".

Review: Moonrise Hill Material co-founder Folamour makes his first appearance on Dublin's All City imprint, in the process delivering one of the most pleasingly positive deep house cuts we've heard for some time. "Shakkei" is marked out by wonderfully flowing piano lines of the kind that once turned "Strings of Life" into an all-time anthem. These combine wonderfully with the producer's loose-but-heavy, drum machine rich groove and near Balearic chord progressions. It's something of a stunner, all told. Elsewhere, Folamour explores deeper and dreamier pastures on "Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place", before reaching for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone, cheeky jazz-funk samples and Andres-esque grooves on "Each Day Is A Frist Day"

Review: Escape From New York's 1984 cut "Fire In My Heart" has long been considered something of a Balearic classic. Original copies of the Rollerball Records release 12" are hard to come by, though, so this digital version is more than welcome. The original version - all slo-mo electro drums, rubbery dub bass, exotic melodies and intoxicating vocals - is joined by the now infamous Instrumental Dub version, which has been a staple in Balearic DJs' sets for more than 30 years. If that wasn't enough, there's also a chance to savour to woozy, dub-influenced synth-pop of original bonus cut "Won't Be Your Fool".

Review: Earthboogie - aka London soundsystem owners Izaak Gray and Nicola Robinson - make their wax debut with three raw, groove laden disco blends. Digging deep into both afrofunk and Italo roots, there's a universal musical language that grabs you physically across all three cuts. "Mr Mystery" sits between Booker T & The Mgs and Daniele Baldelli while "Route Ten To Interzone" is an energetic township jam with added synth sheen. Finally we're seduced by the Balearic weaves, ripples, twangs and horns of "The EB Theme". A rainbow of vibes from start to finish, this one's hard to put down.

Review: If it wasn't for artists like Trikk, the Portugese dance scene would not be where it is at the moment. The Porto native has rapidly grown in both skill and fame since his first EP for Man Make Music, back in 2012, and a series of fine EPs for imprint such as Drumcode and Optimo Trax have really helped to solidify his version of house music. This new four-tracker comes courtesy of the mighty Innervisions, and we hear Trikk in a slightly more contained mood than usual, leading with the deep tribalism of "Florista", which falls neatly into the sparse, aquatic house medley called "Veneno". "Mozam" is a fine since of dub-leaning micro-house, propelled into gear by fluttering bleeps, and "Wardance Dub", as the name implies, pushes the boundaries of Trikk's house style into more dubwise territories. A sublime EP from the rising artist of Oporto.

Review: Yorkshire's Ewan Ewan (drum roll!) has relocated to Europe's new capital of electronic music; Berlin, like most ambitious young producers do these days. Despite being on a roll previous to his relocation, there's no doubt that the vibes and sounds of the German capital have rubbed off on him, as clearly heard on his new LP entitled There Is No Right Time. The dusty and lo-fi sounds of hip-hop inspired/disco-fied Berlin deep house are aplenty on this fine EP which covers a wide variety of moods and grooves. Highlights not limited to: the emotive deepness of "10405", the rusty and vintage lo-tech soul of "Waiting For L" or "Left On Lucy" (featuring fellow expat Steve Huerta) and the wonderful "Earnest Kelly" which you could imagine playing during a car chase in an '80s action film.

Review: More indie world music vibes courtesy of Thomas Von Party's esteemed Multi Culti imprint. The folklorica of Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz's Cantos de Vision EP gets a bunch of wicked remixes on this EP. Starting out with Simple Symmetry's dark, bumpy and grinding rendition of "Tzantza", Earthly Delight's Yor Kultura from the Netherlands deliver a lo-slung deep funk makeover of the track too. "Bruxo" gets a couple of remixes as well, but it was all about the aforementioned Von Party's deep tribal voodoo acid groove: which will take you deep into the spiritual home of the the rainforest.

Review: Gottwood Festival's offshoot label, Gottwax, returns to action, this time showcasing the wares of artists who appeared at their 2016 weekender. Appleblim steps up first, expertly wrapping alien synthesizers around a heavy bassline and clattering machine percussion on the low-tempo thrills of "Phosphene". Leeds-based house producer Bonar Bradberry goes all Daniele Baldelli on the kosmiche chug of "Mod", before Krywald & Farrer lay down a killer jazz-house jam built around rubbery double bass and a famous old hip-house breakbeat. If that wasn't enough to get the juices flowing, the EP also includes a fantastic chunk of global deep house fusion from Heist Recordings regular Ponty Mython.

Review: Cologne's Hodini has appeared previously on local imprint AVA, as well as Berlin's Money $ex and Toytonics. On his new one for London's Wolf Music (his second for the label since his remix for Mr. Fries last year), he goes for a raw and jackin' house vibe that's dust covered and hypnotic and sits somewhere between the raw sampledelic cyclicality of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts Series and classic DJ Sneak style disco-cut ups. He starts with the funky "Down Up" and the lo-slung "Grigio" respectively. Then it's a much more chill affair, with the blunted hip-hop flavour of "Represent Right Here" which calls to mind his work on the aforementioned label of Max Graef & Glenn Astro. Finally "Parashutes" features a bit of help from Hade on this smooth and soulful nu-disco jam that's aimed squarely at summertime open air dancefloors.

Review: Helmed by Asaf Samuel and Katzele, Malka Tuti transmits cosmic boogie sounds from Tel Aviv that come from lesser-known sources. On their fifth release they turn to The Kloom, a loose-fit operation of unknowns making a debut appearance with the powerful strut of "40 Gram Beton". Mixing slow disco grooves with ranging synths and warm piano notes, it's an infectious track that provides a prime jump-off point for the cast of remixers that round out the release. Die Wilde Jagd adds a more mechanical coldwave pulse to the track while Khidja gets lost in a swirling trip of a version, with the label throwing in a radio edit as a bonus.

Review: Jose Manuel's recent album for Music For Dreams, the mighty Excursion Africanism, brought plenty of new and refreshing outernationalism to the electronic scene, and we are pretty convinced about the fact that this is some of the best material to surface out of the label in a long while. Much to our pleasure, this is a full-service remix package, all planned out with the care and attention to detail that it deserves. First up, Islandman reworks "Babylon" into the most seductive of Balearic cuts to have graced our charts as of late, Mehmet Aslan's version of "Voices Of Africa" is a moody yet effective little house roller, the Perca dub cut of "Excursion Africanism" ticks all the tribal boxes in fine style, while Leo Mas and Fabrice's own dub version of "Hungry" is the perfect bit of outsider dance experimentation to complement this magnificently subtle EP. Recommended!

Review: Even Brenden's CHMMR project is giving the Scandinavian scene a renewed sense of freshness and subtlety when it comes to hazy, downtempo beats. The producer is back on Norway's sublime Full Pupp imprint with a gorgeous LP that spans just about ever corner of the electronic dance framework that resides left of field. Auto is a gorgeous piece of work, from its slow, lingering sense of euphoria that spans the entirety of its ten tracks, to the elegance and precision of the melodies themselves. Balearic might be one way to describe this colourful composition of sounds, but we believe that it goes much further than that, and actually resides in the enlarged house domain. This, of course, is for your slower, and perhaps earlier sets...and by early we mean early hours.

Review: More and more, the Laut & Luise label are positioning themselves as one of the most trusted sources of contemporary deep house and meditative techno around. We love that they have a real consistency to their sound palette, and that they always seem to snap up the finest NEW talents rather than imitating what other imprints are doing. Newcomer Kerala Dust debuts with a thrilling four-tracker, starting with the slow, lounged-out Balearic drift of "Untitled", which is followed by the similar yet more beat-driven charge of "Nevada". "Spiegel" is a sublime minimal techno driver, powered by a deep, wholesome wave of low frequencies, and Another Shade Of DWIG ties the EP off with a vocal excursion to Kerala Dust's original mix of "Untitled". Don't underestimate the power of Laut & Luise!

Review: It's been some six years since Hun Choi made his debut on William Burnett's WT Records imprint. In that time, he's proved incredibly hard to pin down. This debut album for Rush Hour seems designed to continue that trend, offering a series of warm, melodious and curiously Balearic cuts that defy easy categorization. Sure, there are dancefloor-focused moments - see the cacophonous, Detroit-influenced hustle of "Error of the Average", the deep acid madness of "Silent Sensations" and the classic deep house bounce of "Desire" - but also a range of downtempo and ambient jams that arguably impress more. Of these, it's "The World" - a humid exercise in tropical drums, twittering flutes and looped vocal samples - and the sublime, string-laden "Bruises" that really stand out.

Review: Nocturnal Activity was released by Mark Rae on Manchester's Grand Central Records, an independent record label back in 2002. It is a remix album, composed of alternative mixes of the tracks from the Sleepwalking LP, plus one new track, a cover version of the Parliament track "Flashlight". It contains some of the labels most sought after tracks. For the dancefloor, The Nextmen remix of "It Aint Nothin Like" is considered a classic. Atjazz turns in a magical remix with Kate Rogers on "Not Just Anybody". Groove Armada went on a weekend break to a country house to flip the Pharcyde's Booty Brown on "Let It Go". However the best is left to last with the fully acoustic version of "Get A Life" with soul legend Bobby Womack.

Review: Amazingly, it's 25 years since George 'E.A.S.E' Evelyn and then production partner Kevin 'Boy Wonder' Harper sat down and recorded "Dextrous", their monstrous, bleep-era classic on Warp. A quarter of a century later, Evelyn is still going strong, though the grooves have mellowed a lot in that time. Here, Warp celebrate the producer's epic career with a much-deserved retrospective. All the familiar favourites are present, from the rush-inducing thrill of early dancefloor smashers "I'm For Real" and "Aftermath", to the sinewy downtempo goodness of the decidedly Balearic "Les Nuits", the blazed hip-hop dub of "195 Llbs" and stoner soul of "70s 80s". This version also includes a number of exclusive remixes, with names like JD Twitch, Special Request, LFO, Morgan Geist and Loco Dice putting their own spin on this classic material.

Review: 2017 marks two decades since the release of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber's first album under the Tosca alias, the undeniably baked Opera. Given their length of service, it's heartening to see that their desire to create evocative, dubbed-out music remains undimmed. There's plenty to enjoy on Going Going Going, their first studio set for three years. Check, for example, the swirling, late night stroll through Istanbul that is "Amber November", the dub-meets-jazz warmth of "Friday", the flowery piano lines and jangling acoustic guitars of "Supersunday", and the thrillingly trippy, krautrock-influenced ambient dub of "Olympia". It would be churlish to say that it's a return to form - they've always been reliable, after all - but it's certainly one of their more impressive full-length outings.

Review: Italy's Psycho Radio and LC Anderson are two house collectives that have stuck close to another over the last fifteen years. They both deal in straight-up electro house but, not that tacky gear, just the good shit. It's no wonder they land on the mythical Rebirth with a new EP, but the real surprise comes from the remixers at the helm of "Bad Reputation". The legendary Daniele Baldelli, one of the pillars of the Italian cosmic wave teams up with Marco Dionigi with a reinterpretation of the original tune; the result is a percussion-heavy, tribal house chugger with that same sleaziness that made the former artist so renowned. There's a Funkadiba version, too, which brings in a tighter bassline to the picture, along with an added layer of vocal swagger. BIG.

Review: Dutch boogie house champs Kraak & Smaak knocked it outta the park last year with their Juicy fruit long player. Now they're putting out remixes of these two album cuts. "Stumble" is a sadness-tinged piano lament with soft, happy-sad summer day vibes. The Fhin Flip version retains Parcel's soulful vocals but adds slow, tough beats and low end rumbles. Elsewhere Richard Dorfmeister appears and delivers a spectacular "Cinematic Way" version and Blue Motel turn in a dreamy stonewashed synth rework. "So Clear" meanwhile is hazy deep house (Imagine a stoned Gypsy Woman) that gets remixed in an off-kilter funk direction by Memem.

Review: Talamanca System are the unlikely trio of Gerd Janson, Phillip Lauer of Tuff City Kids and International Feel boss Mark Barrott. Their sole release in late 2014 became one of the best selling on the Iabel's imprint. My Past Is Your Future brings them back together for a trio of magical productions that harness the power of their production skills and winks at a forthcoming album coming on the imprint this summer. Its' deep balearica cum ambient house on the wonderfully ethereal "My Past Is Your Future" and in proper ambient style there's a truly wonderful "Beatless Stars In Space" mix which is perfect for drifting. Finally the "Chukka Chukka Dance Mix" has Tuff City Kids written all over this this neon-lit retro house mix which is just totally off the hook in its own right!

Review: Alexander Pietnev aka Ponty Mython, is originally from Russia but is currently settled in Vilnius, Lithuania. He had his very first release in 2012 on Beats Delivery and gave a solid impression of what was to come. He went on with outings on Tusk Wax, Arma, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials. He inaugurates Burnin Music here with the cheeky indie house of "Black Magic" which calls to mind recent work by Moscoman or Red Axes. The blasphemy continues with the lo-fi house of "God Bless Atheism". The driving deep groove entitled "Secret Sunbath" has some summery and tropical retro vibes to balance out its tough Robert Hood style bass loop before he closes out the EP nicely with the esoteric afro house jam "Hidden Object".

Review: Berlin duo 2raumwohnung are back! The duo comprised of Inga Humpe, and her life partner, Tommi Eckart made it big in the early noughties with their irresistible electro-pop ditties which got them lumped in with the whole electroclash trend (lest we forget) and of course the inclusion of their anthemic "Ich Und Elaine' on Tiga's legendary DJ Kicks mix in 2002. The master DJ Koze's remix is where the Hamburg hero stays true to the original by retaining most of the elements but injects the track with his trademark knack for deepness, emotion and all things quirky and trippy. If that was not enough, the king of minimal Ricardo Villalobos lends a helping hand and delivers a pumping, rolling and glitchy makeover which could be one of his best remixes in recent times. Finally Thi Chanh knows what he's doing, as he treads a similarly poppy path. He gives the track a dreamy and ethereal rendition that will appeal to fans of the Crosstown Rebels sound.

Review: Henning "Telephones" Severud has repeatedly pointed out that Vibe Telemetry, his debut album, was an attempt to capture a very particular, hard-to-define feeling. Whether or not he succeeded is hard to know, but it's certainly a hugely atmospheric album. It's easy to pick out influences - the jangling, wide-eyed bliss of vintage Italian deep house, the comforting warmth of Balearic disco, the masculine throb of Italo, the blissful melodiousness of new age, and the loved-up colours of early '90s ambient house, for starters - but the resultant tracks don't specifically sound like any of these things. They're warm, colourful, spacey, tactile and hugely atmospheric, with dancefloor ready-cuts - "Sierra", "See Hex & Moon", the hectic "Mezcal Eclipse" - being joined by more hazy, horizontal fare.
