Meanwhile back in Bristol, DJ Die teams up with singer Jenna G to pay tribute to classic soul. On the surface "1000 Soul Singers" initially comes across a well-executed slice of radio-friendly soul-pop: all caramel vocals, retro strings and clean, quantized beats. Of course this being a Gutterfunk release, the formula is given a twist with the addition of some accelerate DnB beats in the chorus. Remix-wise we get deep, choppy hip-hop (Addison Groove), tribal house (Jus Now) and hypey footwork-tinged DnB (Break).

It's about time the British summertime was heralded by the return of one of Hospital Records' most popular series of compilations. Bringing the sunshine to drum & bass this year are some incredible names, from S.P.Y, Nu:Logic, Wilkinson, Phace, Misanthrop, Fred V & Grafix, Noisia, The Upbeats...the list goes on and on. For 29 tracks. Seriously. Also featuring are the darlings of experimental drum and bass Ivy Lab, the musical collaboration between Sabre, Stray and Halogenix. The biggest release this summer from one of the biggest labels in the game, you'd be mad to miss this!

Stylo G enters 3 Beat territory with his latest bundle of dancehall delight and hip-swaying ganja riddims! "Soundbowy" comes in two forms, the first with the man's own vicious and infectious lyrics riding all over the rhythm and the second as a bouncing, dread-ready instrumental. Di Genius remixes the original by adding in some much needed house sensibility and once again leaving us with another instrumental to scratch away until da mornin' come! Sigma's re-interpretation is somewhat breakbeat-leaning thanks to its brain-shattering d&b muscle, whilst Ross Couch literally transforms the track into a seductive club house stepper!

Innerground continues its reign over the soulful and jazzy D&B world with a storming collection of shining new music from some of the scene's finest. Arguably the greatest liquid collab duo in history Marky & Makoto pair up for not one but two massive tracks, heading up the EP in 'we mean business' style. Also featuring their love for jazz funk are Austria's own RoyGreen & Protone, blasting that groove with a lush, retro feel, as does Brazilian newcomer Level 2. Liquid veteran Submorphics drops by to reveal a sweet summer anthem in "Hazel Street" and rounding off the comp is newcomer T>I with a hypnotic delve through nasty electronic percussion. A true indication of where DJ Marky's label is right now, if you're a fan of the genre you'd be foolish to miss out.

Everyone's favourite magic carpet-riding dubstep producer Jafu continues his ascent by joining the ranks of Biome, Kromestar and Congi in having his own volume in Deep Heads' series of artist spotlighting EPs. As the title suggests, Jafu goes deeper than he's ever gone before and the results are perfectly suited to that spangly post clubbing haze. "Whats Your Theory" fuses shuffley halfstep beats to glacial electronica, "Phoam" introduces some Middle Eastern percussion and "Fever" is both haunting and bleepy at the same time.

Run Tingz separate the men from the boys once more with a blazing selection of remixes fresh off the press. Chock full of all the summer vibes you'll need for the next year and featuring jungle legends Serial Killaz, Topcat, Blackout JA and jump up badman Ricky Tuff in "I Got Love" there's a little bit of something for everyone. Roots vocals in tracks like "Sweet Sunshine" blend into big blasts of bass - the only thing missing is the sweet sunshine they keep talking about. Bring it on. It's a junglist ting!

Command Strange has been a very busy man over the past few months. Producing some of the finest liquid rollers from one of the world's most misunderstood places, the Kazakhstan-based producer uses his idols as inspiration to create beautiful jazz-influenced D&B. With supporters like LTJ Bukem, DJ Marky, Random Movement, Fabio & Grooverider, Mutated Forms, Bailey and Big Bud all keen to back him up, Celsius had to say yes to a physical release. From the smooth lush tones of "Away From The Sun" to the deep bass groove of "Do Me Right", this is one liquid EP that pushes the boundaries.

One of the leading labels producing consistently high-quality soulful, deep and liquid D&B releases pushes out yet another stellar collection of new, upcoming and underground artists from their repertoire. Kicking of with yearning, wistful vibes from Low5 in "My Heart" and Passive - "Fall Lines", the tone of this compilation is very much to explore the emotional and cinematic ends of drum & bass. Moving into serious liquid roller territory in the second half of the LP, we meet artists from around the world such as Brazilian Marcio Mouse, California-based Amparo and Cornish D&B upstart Synthetic Journey. It's plain to see Soul Deep's mission statement - the best are worth searching for.

Hot on the heels of emotional "Something About You", Matt U goes back to badboy with a feisty fiver of sheer bass ugliness. "Frequency" is an obese, slippery slug of a tune, all sludgy and grubby. "Backwards" flips for an uptempo rave homage that incorporates some clever reverse techniques on the breakbeats. "Threshold" tackles from the off-side: the halfsteps stomp with attitude while the double time bassline bubbles uncontrollably. Hooking with Killawatt for the penultimate joint, the "The Strangers" is anchored by so much sub bass there's a warrant out for it. "Uncontrolled VIP" closes the show with a neat reboot of last year's dungeon smash with a neat new purr on the bottom end.

mSdoS has been a member of the online liquid and D&B community for as long as anybody can remember, but with his latest batch of dazzlingly fresh tunes he might be set to break into the bigtime. Branching out from liquid to hard stepping dancefloor fillers, this EP covers the full spectrum of drum & bass, covering all the bases you'd expect with his own blend of soul and intelligent rhythms. There's even a taster of his junglist side in "Jungle Plants", swapping smooth rollers for blistering amens and atmospheric vocals. A man on the rise, catch him while he's underground because it won't be for long.

Conjuring the heady rave vibes of breakbeat's golden tear-out days, "Mind Control" is a Botchit-level ripsnorter of a track with layers of bowel-tugging saw tooth basses and party-hyping vocals from two of the biggest toasters in the game. "Phenomenon One" is more contemporary with rhythm switches, shocking bass glitches and pummelling drumsteppy kicks. Laced with yet more premier vocals, watch out for the mad switch up after the build. Remix-wise Benny Page shows his more savage side with a firing roller that comes coated in a fine selection of old skooly motifs.

Bern-based Brits Optiv & BTK need no introduction. From Virus, Renegade Hardware, Playaz and Shoguyn they've produced some of the heaviest and best-loved dancefloor-focused drum & bass on the scene. Aiming their sights at neurofunk legends Black Sun Empire's new label Blackout Music NL known for their penchant for the deviously dark things in life, this EP takes the evil end of their sound and runs with it. The title track sets aside five and half minutes to smash its way through some seriously hard stepping attitude while "You Got Me So" adds charred neuro to proceedings alongside the robotic battlefield that is "Target". If you like techy drums played at breakneck speed amongst bass blacker than Satan's metal collection, you've come to the right place.

One of this year's top unsung tracks, "Brand New Style" brings a slick Baltic beat to V Records. Featuring the always fantastic cohabitation of Serum and Bladerunner alongside Command Strange and the unmistakeable vocals of MC Fats, there are so many ways this release hits the right spot that we can't possibly name them all. "Inner Soul" offers some old school sounds in with the fresh production and crisp, clean jazzy melodies that shows a brighter, softer side to the collaboration. Still hard-hitting with those IDM-style breaks popping through, that big bass at 2'11" should have the entire world out on the dancefloor. Perfectly matching light and dark this release deserves more coverage. Get on it.

Fresh off the back of their Metalheadz signing comes this sheet-metal stepper co-lab with Judda on Subtitles. Stripped back and simplistic, it's all in the bass Q&A, haunted alien rushes and clam-tight two-step. In a word: timeless. For added groove gravitas jump on Calyx & TeeBee's remix. They've kept the distinctive bass lead while adding an array of their processed sounds and a little more in the hi-hat department. Exceedingly sick.

There's no such thing as a drum & bass set without an inclusion of Marcus Intalex somewhere along the way. The Mancunian producer and DJ has proved his mettle so many times over the past decade and more that it's almost impossible to imagine what the genre was like before his techy nuances and intelligent rollers came to be. Appearing on Metalheadz for some hard-hitting set smashers this time, "Riots" owns that kick drum like it's the last one on earth. Keeping that trademark Intalex style it's a fairly minimal piece of straight-up dirty d&b. "Hell 2 Pay" picks up the snares in a jungle style on the flip, making use of that famous pinpoint production precision. Add some doomsday bass and you've got yourself a winner.

Legendary drum & bass label Samurai Music weave yet more minimal magic with this structurally significant release from some of the genre's most underrated new artists. "Tubular" begins life as a disjointed abstract beat launching into open warfare with crisp drums, breaks and snarling bass snaking out from every corner. Then combining forces with Mindmapper, "Theropod" rolls through breakneck beats as atmospheric bass rushes past. Ever played Wip3out? It's the soundtrack it should have had. Adding MTWN to the fold for final track "Relic" proves that yes, things can get even more minimal and a lot more disturbing. One for the head nodders.

Famed for creating some of the most experimental drum & bass available on the scene, Rockwell's latest release from his home label Shogun Audio is a gloriously electrified speed demon. Raging on through Blade Runner-esque 80s effects on that hugely satisfying synth bassline before cruising into a footwork-inspired ultra-shuffle, "Detroit" is what is generally known in the business as an 'absolute banger'. Slamming into some juke clap action straight off the mark, the "Back Again" keeps energy levels high with an inventive twist on shoulder-shimmying, head nodding D&B. Work on your moves - skanking isn't gonna be enough for this one.

Pedestrian's work is sporadic and unpredictable to say the least and with only two releases having come out in the last two years, we really never know what to expect from this mysterious producer. He is, however, back on James Zabiela's Born Electric label and joined majestically by a healthy team of remixers who take care of his "Hoyle Road" track! We get the original, of course, a sweet and sultry deep house groover but Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka rapidly transform it into a hefty techno workout reminiscent of the Ostgut Ton sound. FaltyDL dusts the bass off and produces a heavier, dubbier house cut of the original, backed by some rather splendid synth work, whilst SpectraSoul take care of the d&b sway, giving us the track's vocals over some hyper-speed breakbeats and hard-hitting low-ends. Nice lil' package!

Bringing new talents to the forefront of the liquid scene is what Soul Deep do best. Intersoul's fresh stylings come straight from Bremen, Germany and while he's still new to the game he's already placed wildcards on Influenza, DNBB and Rotation UK. Largely regarded as one of Liquid's bright new talents in and around the scene, "Breaking The Chains" opens the EP as a statement of intent, featuring his trademark light touch alongside fresh, sparkling synths and deep velvety bass, all tied up with jazzy live flute. It's a statement followed up by a solid EP of classic and contemporary liquid funk that shows he's not here to blend in with the liquid crowd - he's here for the long term.

DJ Vapour returns to his homespun label 36 Hertz to provide the world with perhaps his heaviest beats yet courtesy of some smashing remixes from fellow brash & bass (a genre we just made up) fans and producers. Callide's remix of "Sting In The Tail" is off the Richter scale as it steps out some seriously explosive rhythms. Social Security's Rub-A-Dub remix of Natty Rocker pairs dubby vibes with junglist breaks and the out of control energy of jump up to blistering effect. Each track turns up the pressure leaving only one thing to be said - get your skanking shoes on.

A Dope Ammo self-released jazz-jungle hybrid of the bouncing bassline variety, shoving big jungle breaks with hard-hitting jump up is the order of the day on this double release. As the title track kicks in with a false intro before cracking out a sonic boom of intense, high-energy D&B. Ramping up the pressure to an almighty rave drop in the second half, this is not a track for the purists. There's a bit of everything in there, one of the reasons it shines on the dancefloor, thanks to the hyperactive production ball of energy that is DJ Resinate. "Shinobi" calms down a fraction to play host to Oldman's jungle stylings in a hip hop setting with Dillinja-esque bass enough to sink ships. How often do you get experimental jump up? Not often enough.

Effortlessly combining dancehall vibes, the sound of dub culture, big, brash jungle riddims and spot on vocals from Mr Williamz, the jungle remix of Marcus Visionary's original call to arms is a big, bold statement of intent. Large and full of life, there's no doubt it'll be tearing up clubs up and down the country as we speak. Strip back those beats and you're left with his dub remix, bringing out more of the sizzling soundboy flavas that infectious dancehall wynd requires. Canadian DJ and producer Marcus Visionary pushes his junglist vibes wherever he goes. Make way for his sound.

Hardcore and drum & bass; not a combination that's really been explored before but Dose is about to change that with his own blend of hard-hitting beats and OTT cyber atmospherics. "What Lies Beneath" is a sharp departure for Shogun when you look at their releases over the years but it's hard to deny this track's dancefloor appeal to a generation of ravers who want their bass harder than ever before. "Simultaneous" is a whole lot more Shogun, with its deep rolling rhythm and leering, lurching bass. Working on the basis of these two tracks alone, Dose has got a helluva career ahead of him making crowds of people lunge towards the floor in sync. Look out.

Little is known about 2222 but in this instance it's more useful to let the music do the talking anyway. Detail's hard-hitting first track is a minimal stomp through electronic and neuro influences. With cinematic breakdowns and some serious atmospheric build-up, expect to hear it on a mixtape near you soon. Following this penchant for all things dark, crisp and minimal, Haemoglobin's offering steps hard to an echoing synthy backdrop. Noel & Exit9's "Can't Be There" softens the corners with a deliciously deep roller of a bassline, and to throw yet another curveball, Hidden Elements - "Nr 13" is a beautiful piece of microfunk, delicate and subtle with an intense level of production skill. One special EP.

Nitri's sunkissed vibes meet Break's faultless bass alchemy in this high power remix. Featuring the silken vocals of Jinadu, this release is a powerful hybrid of smooth jazzy gorgeousness and a hard-stepping, hi-tempo monster. Erring on the soulful side, it's a perfect blend of the two, with just enough bite to keep things interesting. "Musica" is a total change-up, with abstract percussion snapping and clicking through atonal synths and disjointed vocals. More haunted sci-fi than happy-go-lucky, don't expect to pull this out for the sun worshippers - it's strictly for those who prefer the mean beats and nasty nature of D&B's dark side.

Bringing the pain to d&b back in the glory days of the early 00s and releasing on Dread, Metalheadz and Tech Itch has stood John Rolodex in good stead for his continuing campaign to create intelligent d&b with his own brand of techy influences. Joining T Power to bring one of this year's most infectious jungle tinted drum & bass tracks to V Recordings, there's also sounds of R &B thanks to Khadija's smooth vocals. Commercial Suicide never disappoint and with D&B supergroup in tow this release has been setting dancefloors alight across the country. Made up of the North East's very own drum & bass legends Phobia, Sato and Tyrone, each member adds their own influence and brings a little bit of what they like to the proceedings. The title track bursts in with dramatic synths and huge atmospherics which build up to a massively hard stepping beat. The off-beats in "Haunted Dancehall" create that feeling of unease as the rolling beats kick in but it's not until the disjointed vocals and lilting synths perk up that the spookiness is revealed. Add a massive bassline and Robert's your father's brother, it's an irresistible slice of outsized D&B.

Horizons have a reputation for putting out only the finest dark and dirty underground drum & bass around, whilst Brazilian bassmonger Nitri has been showing his hand for some time now, with remixes by the likes of Break and Naibu already under his belt. This time he rises to the forefront of his own accord, pulling out the big guns with seriously deep rolling bass and precise percussion to set dancefloors alight thanks to Amoss on tight as cluck remix duties. "Laser Gun" on the flip is a crisp minimal destroyer, ramping up the pressure with clear cut precision and sustained pads. Get your teeth in.
