Review:
Champion of dark, tough and considered dubstep, Distance provides the latest instalment in the much loved Dubstep Allstars mix series. It's fairly typical fare from the Chestplate boss man, with tough steady rhythms underpinned by that particularly distorted kind of bassline. There are a number of highlights, most notably Commodo's "Surveillance" which has a rolling break woven into the mix. Cyrus' "Looking Back" also impresses as it purrs away with a gorgeously warm, rich synth line. The biggest surprise is probably Distance's own remix of trance bods Above & Beyond. It's certainly as 'big room' as you'd ever imagine Distance getting!

It's about time Plastician stepped up to Tempa's Dubstep Allstars series. A long-time ambassador for all flavours of the ever-developing and mutating scene, this has been a long time coming. Naturally he's risen to the pedigree the mix series has achieved over the years with a selection of wide-eared grooves that stretch from the soulful vocal VIP opener "Brap" to deeper, more techno inclined dubstep (Jaydrop's "Blind Run") via haunted-house dungeonstep (Commodo's "Axis") and savage grime-hook ups (Merky Ace's "Greaze"). Curated by one of the scene's most respected selectors, this one's been well worth the wait.

Having arguably kick started Bristol's love affair with dubstep via his Context and Dubloaded parties and Tectonic label, Pinch has since proven himself to be one of the most astute and open-minded producers in the bass music scene. It's perhaps fitting, then, that he should get the honour of mixing the latest volume in the acclaimed FabricLive series. It's also fitting that FabricLive 61 sees him at his most versatile, mixing up a range of bass music flavours, from atmospheric dubstep slow burners and dreamy soundscapes (his brilliant collaboration with Quest, "In Dreams") to acid-tinged 4/4 bangers (Joy O and Boddika's anthemic "Swims"), snappy future garage from the likes of Roska, and even a dash of bombastic footwork courtesy of Addison Groove.

David Kennedy, aka Ramadanman/Pearson Sound - one of the most talked about electronic artists of recent times - steps up with his highly anticipated mix, marking the 56th instalment of the fabriclive series. Amongst the almost exorbitant 30 track selection are 10 of Kennedy's own, signposted by explorations into dubstep, post-dubstep, house, funky, techno, grime, juke and all the unmapped areas in between which blend so perfectly to colour the Pearson Sound. Despite the brevity of time allowed for each track, the overall effect is not hurried. Essential!

Review:
Dubstep overlord Skream finally offers up the next instalment in his long running "Skreamizm" series, his first since 2009. While last year's Outside The Box LP allowed him to experiment with varying genres and tempos, this six tracker sees him knocking out the anthems with consummate ease. "Xmas Day Swagger" is a dancefloor banger, simplicity itself while "Indistinct" brings a shuffling beat and an Eastern vocal. "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle DUMB!" featuring Trim will appeal to the grime heads and "Abstruse" and "Snarled" are stripped back head nodders. EP closer "FNKONOMIKA" is a blissful minimal D&B track which oozes sheer class.

Review:
After a minute long intro dominated by unusual atmospherics, delicate distortions and quirky textured SFX, the scene is set for the bass-driven moodiness of "Side A". Experimentalist Old Apparatus explores the ever-expanding grey area of the post-dubstep landscape, with a deep and truly unique sound which pairs melancholy tones with heavy bassweight pressure and buckets of Burial-esque atmospherics. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the intro of "Side B" is an interlude (which, in a way it is, as the two tracks are rolled into one in the vinyl product), but it swiftly moves into another psychological exploration into the unknown. Deep stuff.

Review:
A real fusion of many different styles, and perfectly named to boot, Tropic Thunda is a subtle and well-crafted mix of soca and dubstep beats. Sparse but full of energy and vitality, it's a classy release from J Kenzo (a man who's currently getting support from Caspa and N-Type amongst many others). Also out is Counteraction, which has rolling congas and some off-kilter snares, as well as rising synth stabs that set the beat alive. Both tunes are smart, funky and very cool - miss out on this at your peril.
