Review:
New to Berkane Sol, Aleks Zen impresses hugely with these two newies which perfectly rise the fusion between house, neon-coated '80s funk and post-dubstep production and bass. There's so much good stuff wrapped up on "High Life" - thin 808 snares, trippy G-funk mono synths, punchy kicks and blunt, subby bass - that it's virtually impossible not to be hooked after just a few seconds. On the flip, "Pimp Shoes" is another cavalcade of cool, and a winning meeting of Floating Points hypnagogic textures and Night Slugs' rhythms. Highly recommended stuff!

Review:
Morgan Zarate has been causing a stir online with his inventive and melodic take on dubstep. "Broken Heart Collector" is a luxuriantly produced example of electronic pop with heavily compressed layers of emo-synths, urban beats and an infectious melody sung with aplomb by Stevie Neal. "BHC" is a craftily titled instrumental version; although minus the vocals, the tune takes on a more widescreen feel. "Crey Bey" is a digital feast of video game sounds, lasers, hip-hop keyboard riffs and machine gun snares. Recommended.

Review:
Another slick, on point release from Hyperdub which gets 2011 off to a very strong start for Kode 9's zeitgeisty imprint. Morgan Zarate (who you may recognise as a member of electronica band Spacek) blends a synth-laden, sugar coated, psychadelia a la Rustie with a squelchy bass heavy element in first track "Hookid". He delves deeper into a Dilla influenced "dubstep" sensibility in next cut, "Buy Bye", which is all forward thinking, fidgety edits and glitchy hiccups. "SP", the final track on the EP, pairs clicking beats with sweeping atmospherics, horn tremors and an abundant sense of understated euphoria. Sublime.

Review:
After seeming to slip by most with his debut LP two years ago, Rudi Zygadlo is back with a new single befitting his otherworldly name. In the opening strains of heavily processed piano that flits forwards and backwards at once, you already feel the exciting chill of uncertainty that only grows stronger listening to "Melpomene." It's provocative music that proudly displays Zygadlo's compositional prowess as accomplished melodies and chord progressions dance around his stark vocal delivery, while the production itself swerves and drops with glorious unpredictability. It's a captivating blend that doesn't let up even as the strangely Queen-esque take on bass music of "Arrows" wobbles around in an arch modern pop shakedown.
