Review:
Ame's consistently high quality output, which has been lapped up by house music lovers for many a year now, can work against them. Each release is so consistently good that it becomes the norm, and as such they can sometimes pass you by. Thankfully such concerns are thrown out the window on this 12" on Gerd Janson's Running Back imprint - a remix of 80s art funk oddity "Nature Makes A Mistake" by Son Of Sam. A thumping acid line sets the tone, before a swirling Oni Ayhun-esque synth melody drops in towards the end, bringing things to a mind melting conclusion. The extra production assistance of Marcel Dettmann gives the track some extra thump, while the original 1984 version - only released on a Bain Total cassette sampler and now remastered by Ame - is an unearthed gem in itself. Caps duly doffed to all involved. Superb!

Review:
As the title track on his latest EP attests, Space Dimension Controller is back after a considerable break from the releasing game, with an EP of "deleted scenes" to whet your appetites for his forthcoming debut album. On the strength of the first track, it's already clear that things are different. The tender, melancholic house template has been replaced by a pumped up electro funk workout, rich with 80s boogie synth flourishes, Model 500 drums and an Egyptian-Lover inspired vocal hook about the aforementioned return. It's a drastic switch up, but nailed perfectly. "While I Was Away" cools things off with an aqueous. Italo-dub concoction, and "It's A Cold Planet Without You" heads into a surprisingly breakneck electro rhythm with pneumatic synths of an ambient disposition. Drifting off on the weightless drone of the Eno referencing "Music For Spaceports", SDC has firmly announced his return with a strong update on his previous form.

Review:
Another name rising to notoriety amidst the surge of interest in juke, DJ Diamond serves up his album Flight Muzik. Much like his contemporary DJ Spinn, he pitches a more palatable form of the music that dodges the dance tool nature of the sound in its purest form. The nagging looped samples remain, but in many cases they're placed in a more ambient atmosphere, crafted with the home listener in mind. There are times on tracks like "Torture Rack", when the sound design gets quite sophisticated, but mostly the tracks remain primal and wonderfully weird extrapolations of Chicago dance music.

Review:
Depending on your predilection, the name Venetian Snares will either induce terror or delight. Aaron Funk's music has largely erred towards the aggressive and intense, but those fortunate enough to stumble upon his Last Step project have been privy to a broader tapestry of moods that eschew manic breakcore in favour of low-slung acidic grooves. This latest album, Sleep, is reportedly the result of Funk working on the fringes of his own consciousness at the time when all he really wants to do is have a kip. Stylistically, the Last Step approach is one of vintage brain dance; warm analogue synths give off mournful and intricate melodies, while lashings of expressive acid complement them. The beats are all decidedly vintage too, and largely in a laconic house remit, although to tag this as house music seems a bit of a stretch. Even in the depths of his most malevolent music, it's hard to deny the gift the man has for staggering complexities. Sleep is a shining exponent of that.
